T61: Paid $1,800, suffered for 6 months, only to have to spend $100 on XP to (hopefully​) make it functional​. Let's hope I don't mess it up and void my warranty :)

Dear Community:
Here is the saga of me and my T61. I have tried to love my T61, and it has broken my heart.
Last spring, I was accepted to law school, and I began searching for a notebook computer. If you know nothing about law school, you should just know that we use our computers in every class, every day. Knowing that I would need something reliable and hardy, I asked consulted with my friends in engineering. Unanimously (with the exception of the occasional Mac fanboy), they recommended the thinkpad. It's tough as nails, they told me. It will last me for years, they said.
I ordered my T61 in May. It was caught up the the shipping problems, and took over a month to ship. No big deal. I was annoyed by having it take so long to ship, but I was not peeved too much.
Since then, I have been in hell. From day one, this machine has crashed daily (running Vista Home Premium). It crashes when I search the internet. It crashes when I type in word. It crashes when I play freecell. An honest estimate is that this computer will crash at least once every three hours. I'm sure that much of the blame for this goes to Microsoft, but I hope that you can sympathize with my plight.
Even if we look past the crashes, and that everything runs slowly with Vista, I've had my host of hardware problems. The screws that hold the palm rest on back themselves out about once a month. It's a minor gripe that I should have to tighten screws on my laptop, but it honestly concerns me that I should even have to take a screw driver to it.
Also, there has always been a sizable patch of dead pixels (About the size of a "b" in Times New Roman, 12pt.) on the right center portion of the lcd. They stare at me every day. They anger me every day.
My T61 has already been in for service once for a fan that stopped working. I was the only person without a computer in class that week. Sure, it wasn't much fun trying to take notes by hand, but I can live with things like that. They happen. I'm honestly impressed with the turn around time and the courteousness of the tech that helped me over the phone.
Last week, I tried to watch a DVD. Something must seriously be out of balance in the DVD player because the noise from it vibrating drowned out the speakers so bad that I couldn't understand the dialog in Michael Clayton from about six feet away.
Yesterday, I was finally pushed over the edge. With only 5 word documents and one pdf file open, IT LOCKED UP IN THE MIDDLE OF MY CRIMINAL LAW EXAM! I lost an hour worth of work on a three hour exam. I imagine that to someone not familiar with law school, I sound like a neurotic tool for freaking out about this, but I almost broke down and cried right there. We're graded on a strict curve, and I have a tough enough time making grades having to compete against my capable class mates. I hate that I'm going to receive a worse grade than I should have because I also had to compete against my laptop.
I feel like I have been lied to. I bough a think pad because I was told they are bullet proof, and this machine has turned out to be a complete lemon. I've babied this machine, searched diligently for patches that would help the system freezes, packed it in a padded laptop bag every day, and it has done nothing but hurt me every day. How can I obtain a refund so that we can part friends?

given your experiences with daily crashes, why would you entrust your thinkpad to survive a three-hour exam without crashing or locking up?   if your thinkpad is to be used in a mission-critical environment then why not instead use a proven OS such as XP or server 2003?   i sympathize with your overall experience but, with all due respect, fail to understand why you wouldn't be more proactive in finding a solution to your above problem–especially as a law student who is learning to analyze and interpret our nation's legal system.   i apologize if i sound overly critical here but if i were your professor and you came to me with the same story above then i would ask the exact same questions.
it sounds like all of your problems can be fixed.   crashes and lockups can be fixed by installing vista clean or by switching to XP.   dead or stuck pixels in your display can be fixed under warranty if the defects meet replacement criteria.   screws backing out of your palmrest can be fixed under warranty by replacing the palmrest and associated screws.   and, the DVD player, if defective, can also be easily replaced under warranty.
i doubt lenovo will buy back your machine because of the aforementioned issues but i'm sure that their service department can make thinks right one way or another.

    If you stick to one thread, perhaps you may find a solution. ed2345 is the fourth person to offer help, and yet you respond each time by creating a new thread instead of explaining (in the first thread) why the previous solution hasn't worked for you.
    But why exactly are you concerned about the genre anyway? A song can be in as many playlists as you wish, it has nothing to do with genre, unless you are creating Smart Playlists that use Genre as a rule of the list. If so, you have already been offered two solutions:
    create a second copy of the song and edit that second copy to the second Genre.
    use Grouping to cause the only copy of the song to be added to two separate Playlists.
    By the way, creating new threads and thereby ignoring those who have offered help in existing threads is impolite.

    The reason your applications do not work in Lion/Mountain Lion is that they were written for the older PowerPC CPU that all Macs used up to 2006.  When Apple made its transition to the Intel CPU, they licensed software that they included in all versions of OS X (from Tiger to Leopard and optionally, Snow Leopard) called Rosetta.
    Rosetta miraculously allows PowerPC applications to work on the Intel processor transparently; you do not know it is even present.
    The problem is that after 6 years of the transition, Apple's license to use the underlying software expired for OS X Lion and all version thereafter (and it is doubtful that the current owner of the software, IBM, would relicense it, even if Apple were inclined to do so).
    So you do not have to accept recriminations from others for previously using Rosetta without even knowing it was present and running!
    So for those of use that need to upgrade to Lion/Mountain Lion, I have offered the option to install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels 7:

  • Faulty/stuck power button again! Who was the genius that located the ear-jack hole with the "Liquid Contact Indicator" at the top of the iPhone, so perspiration can accumulate and void the warranty

    My Power button is stuck again...... like many, many other owners....like two of my previous iPhones.  According to the Genius at the Genius Bar in Reno, Nv., my warranty is void because the LCI which is located in the ear-jack hole on the top, has come in contact with moisture/humidity/sweat.  My iPhone has never been dropped or wet. My iPhone4s is in pristine conditon and is in great working order except for the "stuck" power button, but because of a poor quality and location of the ear-jack hole, my warranty has been voided. Everything I have is Apple.  The Rep/Genius in Reno while fullly aware on the chronic power button problems, tried to put the stuck button on  an exposure to moisture. He said, "It doesn't matter if mositure didn't cause the button to stick or not. Your warranty voided because of the Liquid Contact Indicated turned color. Of course, the "power/sync" hole LCI is perfect.  Thank you Apple! I think I'll refuse my iPhone5 delivery on Friday and go buy a "Droid" phone.

    I guess was being too subtle. My points are:
    1. "Stuck" power buttons is a known issue/problem and Apple has been dealing with it since the first iPhone. This is quality problem. The evidence is with other users all around us and all over the web.
    2. The "sweat" issue is a design problem and should've been addressed long before the release of the iPhone5 in a few days.  Yes, they moved iPhone5's  headphone-jack to the bottom/underneath of the iPhone. To say that the "sweat" issue is the users' fault is like saying, Apple iPhones should only be sold to swine or other mammals without sweat glands. We're talking about as little as one drop from someone's temple running down the headphone-jack opening while one is engadged with a phone call.  That's all it takes to change the color of the LCI.
    3. Also I wanted to make my complaint public on this forum and not Facebook,  hoping to both, not only catch the eye of an Apple lurker, but let others know of the danger of speaking on their iPhones while out in the sun, high humidity or driving a car with the top down....... my point being, even the free AT&T Go Phones have protection against the slightest elements.
    4. I paid close to $700 for this iPhone4s 64G less than a year ago.  I don't like being dismissed with a cut and dry, cookie-cutter answer from a 20yr old without reasonable explanation and then be shoo'd out the door. "Next?"
    5. I love Apple products and I'm glad the new release has addressed the jack/perspiration problem although I know there were other factors involved in the decisions to not move/move it.

  • Does anybody know how to get a valid email address for Apple service?  I am unable to call them during business hours and paid them over $200 a month ago to have a repair done ot my iPhone.  I have heard nothing.  They are usually good, but this time....

    Sorry, but Apple does not provide technical support via email, so they have no published email addresses. You will need to find a way to call them. Or make an appointment with the Genius Bar at an Apple Store, if there are any near you, and have them follow up.

    Ah, Ok. I didn't know what was triggering the message. That is launching indeed. (I have to ask because many people a week don't know what it means).
    This message is the big problem, because it isn't even getting as far as the license agreement.
    I found a little discussion of this. It seems rare, especially on a Mac, but here is one person's advice. Worth a try:
    The error that you are facing might be due the reason that the user logged in doesn't have permissions to access the following directory: "~/Library/Application Support/Adobe". Can you please try the following steps with the user account in which you are facing the error:
    1. Remove the Adobe Reader from Applications directory by moving it to Trash.
    2. Now delete the following directory: "~/Library/Application Support/Adobe". Please note that this path is for the Library folder present inside the user directory that you are currently logged in.
    3. Restart the machine.
    4. Now re-install Adobe Reader XI.
    Tip: In Finder use GO TO FOLDER from the menu and type in "~/Library/Application Support/Adobe" (without the quotes but with the ~)

    Start here (change country if necessary) and navigate to 'Password and Security', reset your security questions using the link provided, you will receive an email to your rescue address, use the link in the email and reset your security questions.
    If that doesn't help, you don't receive a reset email or you don't have a rescue address, you should contact AppleCare who will initially try to assist you with a reset email or if unsuccessful will pass you to the security team to reset your security questions for you.
    If you are in a region that doesn't have international telephone support try contacting Apple through iTunes Store Support.

  • Warning: don't sweat and void your warranty

    BE WARNED:
    I sent in my iPod (4th gen) for repair under warranty, and it was returned unrepaired on the grounds that liquid had got into the headphone jack and triggered the 'liquid submersion indicator'. The only liquid that could have got in there is sweat -- and these things are advertised for use in working out, which causes people to sweat! In any case, the problem is with the click wheel, and I use a waterproof armband case, so no liquid got onto the clickwheel.
    Has anyone else experienced this issue?

    Generally upgrading internal storage space after purchase is not an option supported by apple. In saying that you may find a local Apple Authorised Service Provider who is able to do the upgrade and order an Apple Authorised part for that process. It is dependent on your computer model mainly. I would suggest speaking with a local store and having them check your model and see if they are able to/be willing to complete the upgrade. This will be an entirely Out of Pocket expense however and you may find the cheaper option of just purchasing/using an external drive to store general data on to be better for you.

    In order to activate iMessage, the phone has to be able to send an SMS. If the phone is unable to do that, which would be the case without a SIM, you won't be able to activate iMessage.

  • VZW Finally Admits What We've Known for Months

    VZW CRO Fran Shammo acknowledged significant LTE slowdowns in major cities on Tuesday 11/12/2013.
    So do NOT let VZW support get away with lying anymore that they have seen no problems that there is "nationwide shortage." They have been lying for months as users have reported problem after problem continually asking for info about our phones, our locations etc. attempting to blame ANYTHING but their own infrastructure. If you get a support person telling you that the problem isn't with them bring this up, ask to be elevated to a supervisor and demand an explanation for deceptive business practices. Inform them that you will be filing complaints with relevant agencies
    They didn't just figure out this was a problem on Tuesday, they must have been looking into this for weeks if not months all the while telling customers "it's your phone...it's your location...it's somehow YOUR problem not ours."
    So how about it VZW? When did you realize there was a problem with your infrastructure? Give us a date so we can figure out which of us were blatantly lied to when we tried to tell you something was wrong.

    Faster? At this point I'd settle for USEFUL. True it's gotten better in the
    last month but it's still often better for me to switch my phone to 3G only
    to get useful speeds. I'm happy they've acknowledged the problem and are
    working to fix it (we'll see if they actually do fix it). But that doesn't
    change the fact that for a long time we were constantly being asked about
    our individual devices or specific locations (inside a building, surrounded
    by tall buildings) with nary a mention of there being generalized network
    problems in major metro areas. This shows there was an attempt by Verizon
    to bury the idea that they were having generalized network issues, trying
    to pass the buck to individual customers by suggesting their devices were
    to blame or the problem was otherwise isolated to specific customers.
    THAT would have been nice information to have. A simple "We are experiening
    higher than expected demand in several major metro areas which is resulting
    in network congestion. We are working to implement fixes to this problem to
    increase capacity. Until these fixes are in place your 4G performance in
    crowded metro areas may be slower than expected" would have gone a LONG way.
    Instead they chose to act as if there was ZERO issues with the network, NOT
    disclose this problem while customers were asking and complaining
    continuously about slower than expected 4G performance (unreasonably slow,
    obviously I expect slower speeds in more crowded areas, but this was slow
    to the point of being useless) in downtown areas.

    As posted, this include every month that is actually in the table.  You can change the first sub-query if you want to enter first and last months.
