Teaser and movie on 1 dvd - best workflow ?

I've created a 23 minutes movie. Exported it in 1080p/25 fr mp4
I've created a 1 minute trailer (with save as 'trailerxxx', so new project, and deleted everything I didn't need and add want I want in the teaser). Exported also in 1080p/25 fr mp4
So both files were ok for viewing on multi-mediadisc/tv screen in 1080p
Now people ask me for a dvd. Because I know that dvd has a maximum quality/size and the movie is only 23 minutes I wanted to add also the teaser on the dvd.
What I did (because I don't know better :-) ) was making a third project, I added the 2 exported mp4 files (teaser and movie) and created dvd menu, headings and exported to dvd format and burn dvd.
Everything worked but I presume that this workflow is not ideal to get best quality dvd ? I suppose that for qualityreasons it's better to work with the projectfiles ?
But how can you do this (making a third project from 2 others without using the exportfiles).
Or is there no difference in quality if you just use the exported files like I did ?

Teaser has his own menubutton, but don't play auto before movie. But in this case that's not necessary. I don't want people to force them to see the trailer (if you had seen it, you would agree :-) lol )

Exporting an HD movie to Standard DVD, best format?

I've been editing for awhile but just made the switch to an HD camera (Canon XH A1). I imported footage (as HD footage) and edited it in FCP, now I wonder how I should export it. I did it using "current settings" and it would only go into DVD Studio Pro as an HD project. It was shot at 24p, what's the best way to export it for standard DVD use? I'm just not sure what settings to use...

The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option "first play".
5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.
6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
THATS ALL!!!
NOW...if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing. Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps. Except you can choose "16:9 LETTERBOX" instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.

Jpegs and Movie on same DVD?

This may sound like a stupid question and I am new here...but, is there a way I could include a set of piks that can be downloaded onto a computer and using the same DVD to show a movie I made on a regular DVD player?
Any help would be appreciated.

You should check "dvdrom content" in the DVD inspector within DVD SP. Then it lets you select the directory (choose) from which you want the content (including jpg's for example) included. What I do is to select a directory which contains my photo directory so I get a new folder on the DVD called something like "Photos."
Otherswise you get lots of files at the root level on the DVD which is confusing to users. For example, I have a folder on my hard drive called "DVDROM" and it contains a directory called "Photos" which is where the actual jpgs are.
It works perfectly for me.

Best workflow for premier 13 and how to produce dvd's?

Hi all.
Historically I use imovie, idvd, and a little final cut express.
My machine is a 2008 iMac recently upgraded with a new HDD and more memory, now 6GB. It is intel.
Primarily I did this due to final cut not working my camera not recognised etc, but i discovered this is not ow supported in Yosemite.
All is now well with the imac.
I bought the elements bundle from Adobe and am getting to grips with the video editor just now also the organiser.
I have loads of archived movies from the imac upgrade i did saved on and external HDD which I tend to try to use rather than filling the imac HDD up, although not so much an issue now with 2TB.
I am working through my old footage and using a combination of imovie and premier elements, to produce a final movie.
My question is, what is the best workflow, I am going on a trip of a lifetime this year and want to practice the best workflow.
I currently have files all over in various formats, so its a nightmare.
Also what is the best way to produce a DVD?
I used to produce movies with imovie then when i had a few I would produce a DVD with a few menus and buttons and movies on.
This doesn't seem to be so straight forward anymore, I have tried to save a elements movie to a .mov and .mpg file to import to imovie then idvd but the aspect was changed to 4:3 for a start, so I may give up on that.
I intend in future to download the files from cameras to folders I can recognise, although I have historically downloaded straight from camera, it would be a new method for me.
What is then the best way to then produce my DVD's, I am not into blue ray as yet.

Are you using iDVD? It is the easiest way to burn a DVD. You need to have your video on your computer, usually imported into iMovie and then you create your DVD by putting your movie into iDVD and burning your disk.
Have a look at this support section from Apple. Do all the tutorials and explore all the options. You will learn quite a bit and should be able to burn DVDs after that: http://www.apple.com/support/idvd/

If it is a commercial DVD, it may not be legal to rip it. There are web sites that will give you info about how to do it.

What's the best workflow for Home Movie Importing and Enjoying?

I'm new to iMovie (and the mac) and have started importing all my home movies from my camcorder into iMovie. I quickly realized that movies take a huge amount of disk space and it may or may not be reasonable to import all my movies and keep them on the hard disk in .dv format. At 12GB/Hour I would need 1.2 Terabytes of storage (plus backup). If that is the best workflow, i'm happy to invest in a few terabytes of storage and back up. But before I do that, I want to check to see if there is a different workflow I should follow given my use case.
Here is my use case:
I have 100 hours of 8mm and miniDV tapes already and plan to continue creating more.
I want to import them all into the iMac for ease of organization, searching for the clips of interest, and watch them either on my iMAC and also on my TV (via TIVO).
I may do some editing, but this is not a big priority for me at this time. I may do more editing in the distant future when I have more time. My editing for now will be limited to rejecting portions of clips I don't want.
I plan to watch the movies from my iMac on my TV via my TIVO (i've already ordered the Roxio Toast software that I understand I need, per the Tivo web site).
The final piece of my use case is back-up. I'd prefer to back up my movies on disk this way I maintain any editing i've done in case of a disk failure. Depending on what video format is recommended, this may bump me into a RAID multi-terabyte system as both working and automatic backup?
Here are my questions:
Should I maintain my event library in .dv format? (and bite the bullet on the storage)
Or is the .dv format intended only for temporary editing and users are expected to compress into another format after editing? if so, what format and which tool is recommended? (keeping in mind that I want to view the clips via Tivo and Roxio/Toast).
If I need to byte the bullet and invest in storage, my quick math suggests I'll need about 2 terabytes for the library and 2 more for back up for a total of 4 terabytes!?. Is a RAID system recommended for this? (I was surprised that the Apple store did not carry such a system, so perhaps that is not the best option). What would you recommend?
Anyone out there with a similar use case? I know I've asked a lot of questions here. I'd appreciate any recommendations you may have, even if you cant answer all of them.

Short answer, yes; long answer:
I did "bite the bullet" since 1T drives are at or just over $100. I'm using a MacBook Pro so I bought an 2 port eSATA card for my cardbus slot ($34), and a 1T eSATA/Firewire/USB drive ($119). I don't plan to "back up" as I am not going to get rid of my Mini DV tapes/vhs/analog tapes, etc. Those will be in an off-site dark cool closet elsewhere. I don't want to do RAID or such as it still puts everything in the same drive unit, in the same location. Basically I'm splitting my video import to two different physical drives. So if lightning, thieves, personal incompetence or whatever strikes, there's more chance it'll only affect one of the drives. I've thought about a Drobo, which you might consider. It is unique device that offers a spin on RAID that offers some advantages.
Everything I read here on these boards suggests that it is best to grab the source video in the original format whenever possible. Since storage is cheap, makes sense to me.
It is likely you wouldn't compress your video unless you were going to edit it. For example if you wanted to make a video of the kids growing up to give the relatives you'd likely end up compressing to burn them a dvd. You would compress if you were going to use MobileMe, YouTube, etc. to post some footage. Whether you watch the video from home, or output to DVD for others, or post online, at least you'll have the source video in it's best possible original format to work with.
This is an aside, but might be useful, I imported one tape at a time, let iM09 create a new event and split per each day. THen I renamed every event based on what the content was before doing the next tape. This really helps later on once yo realize you have a hard drive with 50 hours + of everything in your life on it. I included the year in the name in some way, for example, John's wedding 1994, Hawaii 2000, Hawaii 2004. Then I ended up drag/dropping Hawaii to one event.

Best Workflow; HD to YouTube, iPhone, and DVD?

Hi there. I'm currently editing a four and a half minute video in Final Cut Pro, which was shot on HDV 1080i, 30fps. To review my work, I've been exporting the timeline using the Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1440x1080 30p 48kHz setting. This creates a very beautiful, clear looking file, albeit a little large (roughly 4.5GB).
I am going to need to export my video to three places; YouTube, iPhone, and burn on DVD. I was wondering what the best workflow for each of these you recommend.
I'm completely unsure about YouTube, though I imagine for iPhone I could take the 4.5GB Quicktime file in Quicktime and do a File->Export using the Movie to iPhone setting. This would theoretically create the best quality file for iPhone, correct?
Further, I know I could use Compressor to create .m2v file ready to burn on DVD using DVD Studio Pro, but what settings do you recommend? Since the video is so short, I would want the maximum bitrate, but don't want to set it so high that some DVD players can't play it. Thanks SO much in advance!

I do basically the same thing you do, except at 24p instead of 30. My workflow for going to Youtube uses a pair of custom-crafted Compressor presets. First, I scale my ProRes 422 HQ reference movie down to 640x360, still in ProRes, with frame controls on. This gives me a really good downrez.
Then I encode the resulting downrez to H.264 at 20 Mbps, with AAC audio at 256 Kbps. (Sometimes I have to tweak the bit rate of the picture to keep it under Youtube's one-gig hard ceiling. I recommend BitRate Pro for this; it lets you calculate the bit rate needed to encode a show of arbitrary length to a file under one gigabyte.) This is the file I upload, on the theory that giving them all the bits possible will result in the best possible final encode to Flash.
The last step in my workflow is to stab the person who wanted me to deliver via Youtube.

Best workflow for burning Blu-ray and DVD

What's the best workflow for effciency sake for burning both a Blu-ray and a DVD of the same project?
Essientially I'd like to export and create a menu once, then be able to downrez to DVD. However, I'm not sure that is possible since blu-ray and DVD are differnt codecs.

The only way that you can get acceptable re-scaling of menus is to go from BR to DVD, and do the editing in Photoshop. Simply re-scaling the menu here will not give acceptable results.
I usually copy the various button layers from the BR menu to a new DVD menu file created using the provided Photoshop preset. You will still have to do some manual re-scaling and alignment. The thing that has given me the most trouble over the years is round button highlights - a segment is often chopped off. Font sizes will probably need adjusting too.
Unless you are adept with handling layers and groups within Photoshop, it may be easier to start again.
Any attempt to convert within Encore is unlikely to produce acceptable menus in my experience.

BEST Workflow? MPEG-2 Cutting and preparing for DVD...

I am in the process of putting together a showreel. The only way I can get my work on a DVD is to record the DVB-T Stream (its Swiss Television), which Quicktime says is "MPEG2 Muxed, 720 x 540 Pixel" - and it's with 25fps.
Now I'd love to cut those Files in FCP with as high quality as possible and export it for DVD-Studio. If I would not be cutting these files, as I already did last year, there is not much conversion but only demuxing needed to use them in DVD Studio.
But how can I cut those MPEG-2 in FC Studio 2 without much quality degredation?
Whats the best workflow for this?
I read somewhere here in that forum, that I have to convert this into DV, cut it in FCP, and then convert it again to MPEG-2 -- but that sounds like a lot of compression going on...

Im aware of the fact that a recompress is not the best way to go. But I don't have any other chance, since a broadcasted signal is already in MPEG-2 and there is nothing I can do about it, this is my only available source. There is no tape for me.
I was basically just wondering if there is something like a smart Compress..say, it only recompresses where there have been changes, between two I-Frames... and evrything els thats unchanged just get copied. that would be the way to go...

Rather than burn directly to disk follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

Best workflow for making dvds on printable disks

I am going to burn a few dvds and want to also use my printer to print some images onto the dvd itself.
I have printable dvd-r blanks, and will use idvd and my mac pro dvd drive to make and burn the dvds, but I am wondering which is the best sequence to do it in?
Do I burn the dvd first and then print on its surface, or do I print the surface first and then burn the dvd?
Will one way be better for avoiding burning or playback problems or does it make any difference?

How do I use it if I want to burn another copy of my movie to a dvd in the future?
I use Toast to make all additional copies from a disc image (or from the finished dvd itself). But you can also use apple's disc utility just the same without the additional cost of any 3rd party software.
There is very little difference between a disc image and a finished /burned Dvd-R. Both are fully self-contained (complete with video_ts folder/s). Both respond exactly the same way when played with apple's dvd player app.
Yes you can go ahead and delete all prior iDvd and iMovie project files (assuming all is exactly the way you want the dvd to play now and to look like as far as menu selections, movies, titles, audio, and slideshows). But I personally would not delete any of the above files until I am 100% certain I will not need them again in the future (in terms of further modifications to an existing iMovie project especially). External HD space is rather cheap these days and I have a habit of keeping existing iMovie project files and if necessary archiving an existing iDvd project file which I'd rather not have on my boot volume but poses no problems on an ext. FW HD.

Best workflow config for music DVD

Hey.
I am about to produce a live music DVD with 5.1 surround and wanted to get some opinions on the best workflow for the project to yeild the best end result for amazing audio.
I was going to start in Logic Pro and finish the final mixdown, then finalize between FCP and Soundtrack....then pull it all into DVD SP. I can keep all the tracks separate if that is a useful strategy. Also, the live audio will be 38 separate channels and then pared down for the final mix. The video and editing I am not worried about.....but making sure the final audio mix in mindblowing is still a huge concern to me. Any suggestions?

Yes, you can put more than one movie on a DVD, as long as the total length of both together is not over 2hrs for single-layer DVDs.
I know what you mean about it taking so long for the burning....my DVDs are usually just close to 2hrs, so taking 12-14hrs to burn is not unusual for me. I just do it overnight, and it is finished in the morning. I 'save to disc image' first, and then do the burning from Disk Utility.
Trust me, I've tried everything I can think of to be able to.
I am surprised that you cannot get your movies exported back to DV tapes with your camcorder. I looked up its specs, and it shows it has Firewire port, so you should be able to export. I would pursue this further....
Have you tried saving your movies as QuickTime Full-Quality and then importing that into a new iMovie and exporting that? You will need to have more free space to copy the movie, but once you have made the QT movie, you can delete the original one, and you can delete the QT one after the export. Also, it may take a LOOOONNNGGG time for the compression/process necessary to create the QT movie, and somewhat long for the import into iMovie, but I have found that iMovies that would not export to my camcorder in their original form exported easily after I made the QT one.

Best Workflow; HDV - SD DVD

I'm a little new to using HDV with Final Cut Pro, but was wondering what the best recommended workflow would be for the following project;
I plan to use my Sony HVR-V1U to shoot a two-hour (give or take) video in 1080i. I want to import into FCP, edit, add my titles, transitions, whatever, and then export out to DVD SP so I can do menu creation, chapter points, etc. What would be the best recommended workflow to do this? Should I export to Compressor (using what settings?) and then import into DVD SP, or should I export as an uncompressed Quicktime and let DVD SP handle the compression. I am after the highest possible quality. Thank you in advance!

You should encode using Compressor or other encoder and not let DVD SP do the encoding.
Now I do usually send timelines straight from Final Cut to Compressor, and many people prefer this method since it is sending data to Compressor without rendering, though with HDV it can take time (lot) especially if you want to re-encode. So often I also just export as self contained in ProRes or AIC. The export takes time, but can save some later if re-encoding.
It terms of encoding settings using better for resize and the others in frame controls helps alot in quality, but again adds some time. (For SD DVDs)

Best DVD Quality Workflow

I'm still trying to figure out how to put a movie on a DVD without unnecessarily compromising quality.
All other factors being exactly the same, I ingested my AVCHD video into FCP and created my movie using ProResLT. I exported a self-contained quicktime movie using the same settings.
One one path, I imported the QT movie to Compressor, chose the best quality settings for DVD, and compressed the audio and video (for hours and hours), and then took finished file to DVDSP Pro, which took it as it was.
On the other path, I took the self-contained quicktime movie file created by FCP and dropped it directly to DVDSP Pro (which took less time to encode than Compressor).
The path skipping Compressor did a far superior job.
This totally confuses me. Can anyone please explain?

I don't know what to tell you. When I exported the QT movie, and imported it to Compressor, I used the automatic settings for SD DVDs and chose the 90 minute option since my movies are just over an hour. The pixellation on the TV screen from the finished disk is just awful. Unacceptable. The pixellation and coming are so bad I didn't notice other "artifacts".
It looks worse than my experiment last night at 300% scale: I did a short sequence, same clip, and tried scaling my AVCHD to ProResLT video every 10 seconds or so from 100%, 200%, 300% and 400% just to see what I'd get. I think it's interesting that DVDSP uses Compressor in the background (given my results); Since that is the case, then I obviously don't know enough about Compressor to use it well. But I don't need to right now; if DVDSP does a better job, I'll just let it do the job
It is curious to note that the "footprint" for my really short experiment-maybe one minute-looks like it burned over 1/3 the radius of the disk. I wonder if I use this scaling at 200% on a full hour movie if it will not look as good because the automatic settings that DVDSP uses in Compressor will take full advantage of the available space, and if the video is an hour long there won't be enough room to make it look that good. Hmmmmm. I think I'd better do a full hour test, LOL! I'll let you know how it works out!

The entire DVD containing Quick Time movies (Final CutExpress project) and slideshow was done in iPhoto. The Final Cut project was rendered prior to export to QT, the slideshow was sent to iDVD withoutrendering. The slideshow with most of the pictures from my still camera incombination with stills from movie clips and some downloaded from the Internet.After burning, the movie playback is perfect but the slideshow is not. The slideshow containing 3 differentkinds of pictures; those from my still camera looks OK; the stills from themovie clips and from the Internet are not. I don’t have much knowledge in this game, but I think NTSCwith frame size 720x480, and the downloaded picture Item Property shows most ofthem are between 400 to 500 x 300 to 600, may be both of them are not suitablefor TV screen while the stills from my still camera looks OK because they are2048x1536.
