At this time, OS X only offers US English text-to-speech voices. You can install 3rd party software to do what you want. Google search, check Macupdate and CNET Mac Downloads.

Non-english text-to-speech (Cp 6.1)

Hi,
I was wondering if it is possible for me to add a dutch voice to the text-to-speech in Captivate 6.1. I've seen the possibilty of adding certain NeoSpeech voices, but I couldn't find a dutch one. On my PC, I've got quite a few number of licensed TTS voices because of the numerous TTS software I own (such as Kurzweil 3000 etc.) and they've got numorous dutch voices available that are used by the TTS software.

Error while generating Text to Speech in XP

Hi,
I'm getting an error when I try to generate Text to Speech from within Speech Management in Captivate 5 running on Win XP sp3 (swedish).
When i click on Generate Audio I get the error: "Error occurred while generating Text to Speech Audio for Slide 1."
Error occurrs when using the Loquendo and Neospeech voices. Microsoft Sam works though...
Same installation on Windows 7 works just fine, all of the voices generates audio file without error. Unfortunately our clients are only allowed to run XP...
What am I doing wrong?

- What is the text that are you trying to convert to speech? Does that contain any non-english character?
- Is your project an upgraded one from an earlier Captivate version?
- Create a new project in Captivate 5 and insert single slide. Use this text - "This is adobe captivate" and try to convert it to speech using neo speech/loquendo voices. Does this work properly?

What's wrong with Text to Speech

I just discovered strange behavior of Text to Speech under 10.5.7. No matter which System Voice is used it reads "Y" or "y" as {:i} and not as {waɪ}. In the International setting System language is set to "English" and Formats to "United States".
Even stranger is that when it reads "Y Y", it reads correctly +{waɪ waɪ}+, but "y Y" or "Y y" it reads +{:i :i}+. So, just the uppercase and lowercase makes a difference?
It can be tested easily in the Terminal by the command *say "Y"*...
Do somebody know what causes this behavior? I've tried this on all my 3 machines (10.5.7) and it's the same everywhere.

Good catch! It sure looks (sounds) like a bug.
I just tested it on my 10.5.7 box and
Y, y and e
all sound identical.
And yes, "YY" comes out correct.

However, "y" is pronounced properly in words, hence the YY being correct.
It might be considered that the singular "y" is pronounced "E" but I would argue against that.

Which agrees with what we both consider the correct English pronunciation of "y"
Playing devil's advocate, however, while "y" is pronounced "why" as in "supply" it is also correctly pronounced "e" in words such as "happy" and most words beginning with "y" so there is a counter argument.
Still, on 10.5.6, "y" is always pronounced as in the MW example.

C7 Text-To-Speech switches language during message...

2 problems actually;
1. Translates text message body to Spanish.
The 'You Have xxx Text Message(s)' Intro is spoken in English (US). Then the message body is spoken in Spanish ES (MX)
The language indicator on the play screen says ES (MX) while the select language option has English (US) selected.
2. I cannot change the ES (MX) language setting via the phone. The language selection menu does not even show a listing for ES (MX).
Tried a reset and problem remains. Nokia USA has nothing i can find on the subject/problem.

Now learning more about this - this can be about a missing launguage package and the voice packet "Kimmo".
Interesting thing that you cannot download such packets in anywhere in the Nokia support pages...

Strange. This means that if I get these files again, for next the E71 upgrade I will save these two files in a secure place. Just in case those are not anymore for easy download in the Nokia web site.
Others - if someone else happens to have those sis-files, I would appreciate you could share those with me.

Adobe Captivate 6 Spanish text to speech

Hi we are using Adobe Captivate 6. We were wondering if there is an option to get text to speech in Spanish language. We are currently using NeoSpeech which provides German, French and English (couple of accents).
Are there any alternatives to this?

You can purchase Spanish Voice from NeoSpeech.com and Loquendo.com.

IOS 6 multilingual text-to-speech

IOS 6 seems to have brought a text-to-speech able to recognize different languages (in my case, french and english). When in doubt it even asks to confirm the language before reading the text. Not sure is new with IOS 6 but I did not notice this function before.
However, Siri does not have the same intelligence. It reads (SMS for instance) assuming the text is in the language defined for Siri setup.
Anybody tried this?

Text to speech problems

I have my Mac announce the time every 1/4 hour in Japanese. The first problem is that it's saying "it's" before the time... for example "it's go ji ju go fun" but with the Japanese accent, it sounds (oddly enough) like the Japanese word for "when." The second problem is that it is saying "o'clock" in a Japanese accent (sounds like "oku roku" after the hour-number).
In order to provide replicateable examples of what I'm talking about: Using OS 10.7.1, grab the "Kyoko" text to speech voice and set the Date & Time system preference to announce the time every 1/4 hour with the custom voice set to Kyoko. If you don't have the rest of your Mac language settings as Japanese, it should ask you if you are sure you want to use a voice that dosen't speak the current system language. Now wait for the next quarter-hour announcement.
I'm also attaching a clip of two examples:

CP 5 text to speech--purchased voices integrated directly?

I am hoping someone from Adobe will answer this question definitively for me (or someone who has figured this out and tested it). Let's say I have to add text-to-speech to a software demo and provide the demo in, say, five different languages. I have English, French, and German available to me in CP5. But I also need Spanish and Japanese. So I purchase the Spanish and Japanese voices from another TTS vendor (pick a vendor, it shouldn't matter, right?). QUESTION: will the purchased Spanish and Japanese voices be available directly in Captivate just like the voices that came with Captivate?

Using third-party voices for speech text
You can purchase voices from third-party vendors and use them seamlessly in Adobe Captivate.
Note: Ensure that these voice comply with your operating system’s speech APIs.
Install the voices on your computers using the installers provided by the vendors. The new installed voices get listed in the Speech Agent list of the Audio > Speech Management dialog box.

Use Chromium OS text-to-speech voices with Chromium browser

TL;DR chromium-ext-chromiumos-tts-git - all TTS voices from Chromium OS for use with Chromium desktop browser. Install as unpacked extension (no more auto-install, sorry, damn you Google!)
So you've heard about the text-to-speech capabilities of Chromium OS, and you would like to use them with your desktop browser?
Perhaps you have dyslexia, a visual disability, or just a desire to learn a new language, have Web pages read out to you, or you simply want to show off your digital-fu to your friends?
Then you may have noticed that the Chrome web store does have plenty speech synthesizers from third parties, but in most countries, the one from Google usually shows up with just one voice (US English).
For those who don't (want to) speak English, are bi-/multilingual, or who just are more open-minded with regards to the world's languages, here's my way to help make this happen: chromium-ext-chromiumos-tts-git on the AUR.
This extension packages the TTS engine and all the voices available from the Chromium OS project...as a Chromium extension.
To install it:
Download the taurball, build and install the package
In Chromium, browse to chrome://extensions
Enable Developer mode by ticking the box
Click the button named "Install unpacked extension..."
Navigate to /usr/share/chromium/extensions/chromium-ext-chromiumos-tts
Click on Open
That's it, you should now have a new extension named "Chromium OS Text-to-speech (by Google)" enabled and ready to use.
Note: Before rushing off to try out some HTML5 / TTS demos out there on the Web, please realize that not all of them work well (or at all), since text-to-speech on the Web is quite new and still in development.
The easiest way to get a quick glimpse (or rather soundbite) of what this thing can do, is to install the ChromeVox extension from the Google web store. After installation, click on its Options link, scroll down to Voices, and try out the different languages from the listbox.
Suggestions, questions, etc. are very welcome.

To make it clear, this is not ripped, reverse-engineered, "warez" or anything like that. It uses publicly available material from the Chromium OS project, and modifies only BSD-licensed source files.

What speech engine should i use? and how do i use it with java? i've downloaded javax package but when i run the sample codes hello world from Java speech api, it does work n i'm geting compiling errors saying tht package javax.speech does not exist.

I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. Toggling between voices in Text-to-speech

Hi!
I'm using my MPB to study both languages English and French and every time I want to change from the English default voice in text to speech change it to french i have to go to system preferences to change it
is there an eaisier way (likea menue button that toggles between the two voices: tha English one and the french one)

Which voice are you using? Here's a response from that page from Dr. Allen:
"This is because the codes are for the Loquendo voices, not the Neo-Speech voices. I don't believe that the NeoSpeech voices use these codes. You might search forums & the blog to see if there are similar triggers for Kate & Paul."

Does Leopard's text to speech offer any new or more understandable voices?

I haven't moved up to Leopard yet. I have read that Leopard is suppose to offer some improvements in the text to speech voices, however I can't find any information from Apple about these changes.

Exactly so. With any purchase you get Heather (US English). The US English pack includes Laura, Ryan, Kenny, Nelly, Jane, and John, giving 7 voices for $99, or $14 apiece. Cepstral voices are $30 each.
British English gives you Heather, of course, along with Graham, Lucy, Peter and Roger. 5 voices for $99, or $20 apiece.

OK, so one does get more voices with Infovox. However, after listening to the American English voices, I would probably only use Heather, Laura, and Ryan.

Text to Speech conversion - Does anyone recommend any software?

I am currently looking at a way to convert the written text in my captivate modules into spoken word without recording a voice over. Ive only just started digging into it and wondered if Captviate itself has a way of doing this, or if any kind of 3rd party applications plug into Captviate to do it? Im on mac if that helps.
If neither of the above is possible, does anyone recommend any text to speech tools. I am really after something more along the lines of Siri etc rather than the old school more robotic sounding converters. I really am after something more natural and more believable as human.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have just discovered the in built content. The standard ones arent great so I have installed the Neospeech content. Ive just posted a problem I have encountered with those though. I would prefer an UK English male as its to represent a character I have created but I could settle with Paul if I cant find a better alternative.
I had considered voicing it myself but I dont want the character to become me or vice versa as the content will be used in my organisation and people will associate him with me.
