    Hello:
I am a long way from a wi-fi expert, but.....
You need, I think, either a router with wi-fi or an airport (express or extreme).  The iPad needs to connect to to a network.  In my case, I use an airport express and both my iMac and iPad 2 connect to the Internet through the airport device.

I just got my new Macbook Pro today. When I tried to connect it to my Wi-Fi at home it won't connect. I put in my WEP key correct every time and it keeps saying  "Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.74.157 and will not be able to connect to the internet" . I connect my iPod touch to this same Wi-Fi all the time plus my other laptop and my phone and it works fine. Please help !! I  use Verizon Fios modem/router.

I was watching my ATV3 and it suddenly stopped. When trying to reset things and get my wifi back I get the following message: Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.82.22 and will not be able to connect to the Internet. I do not have clue to what happened or what to do next. Any help is appreciated.

Power-Cycle the modem.... though it looks like your internet services may have gone down.. or something else upstream has gone kaut.

Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.235.119 and will not be able to connect to the Internet.

Reset the TC and make sure it is in the right mode.. ie router if you use a cable pure modem for instance.
Or if you use a router combined modem.. put the TC in bridge mode.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

  • IPhoto books in iPhoto -  The new Photos program only has square photo books.  Will I be able to edit/order books with iPhoto after I upgrade to Photos?

I have many photo books created in iPhoto.  These are rectangular shaped.  The new Photos program only has square shaped books.  After I upgrade to Photos, will I still be able to order books using iPhoto?  Or, will Photos allow me to edit books in their original rectangle shape, and order them?

The new Photos.app will have the classic rectangular sizes as well.
    See the Preview.
    Apple - OS X - Photos Preview
It only mentions the new square format, but the classic layouts are there as well, as the picture shows.
But you may not be able to migrate the old book projects. Finish any current book project while still using iPhoto '11 and create new projects in Photos.

I use zotero 1.0. don't want to update to zotero 2.0 because I would thereby lose the bibliograpny I have built up on my current project. I updated to Firefox 3.6 and was informed that zotero 1.0 was incompatible, so have lost my zotero 1.0 biblio anyway. I want a way to recover the biblio. If I downgrade to Firefox 3.5 will I be able to recover zotero1.0 biblio?
    == This happened ==
    Just once or twice

Just run the 8.0.1 .exe and it should take care of upgrading your Firefox.

  • Will I be able to facetime with friends in the Philippines?

Do I need to purchase an Ipad in the Philippines in order for it to work there? Will I be able to facetime and email to friends in different countries?

FaceTime works over WiFi. You can FaceTime to anybody anywhere if you both have FaceTime. We have no clue where "here" is for you. You did not provide your location. If you live in a country where FaceTime is not restricted and you can buy an iPad with FaceTime on it then buy the iPad wherever you live.
Is FaceTime restricted in your country? Is it restricted in the Philippines?

  • HT3466 Airport has self assigned IP address 169.254.153.51 and will not be able to connect to the Internet

Cannot  connect to internet wirelessly because I get the message "AirPort has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.153.51 and will not be able to connect to the Internet."

I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on external drive.  I'd like to migrate only the internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive then just plug in iPhoto library drive.  Is this going be a problem?

I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on an external drive.  Both drives are backed up on Time Machine.  I'd like to migrate only the old internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive and then just plug in iPhoto library drive to the new iMac.  This would save having to transfer several hundred GBs of data.  Will this work using Set Up Assistant?

Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one.  See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD.  Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select.   Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows.  Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items.  That may take a few mintutes on a large library.

  • I have a 2009 MacBook Pro. How do I do a backup on the new internal hard drive using my existing LaCie external drive without re backing up the entire internal drive. Just want to backup most recent changes

I have a mid 2009 15" MacBook Pro. The existing internal drive was about to fail so I had it replaced with a 500GB western digital drive. I have been backing up my system with a LaCie 500GB external drive. I want to perform a new backup using Time Machine but I only want to backup any changes from the last 30 days or so. I want to avoid doing a total system backup thus duplicating most of the data on my external drive and pretty much filling it up. Any suggestions appreciated
