Thinking of ordering BT Infinity

Hi.
I am thinking of ordering the BT Infinity broadband and phone package though am having serious doubts over the use of throttling.
I have emailed support and got the reply...
"We cannot answer this question until your broadband has been activated."
I tried the Live Chat option and all they said was "No we don't". Then when I challenged them and said that iin the T&C's it said BT did throttle P2P appsm, they then hung up.
Really, really awful customer service so far BT!
Can anyone confirm whether BT throttle or speed manage...
Spotify
Steam
Online Gaming
Iplayer and online video/audio streaming
Many thanks.

Many thanks.
The only throttling is  when using P2P protocols at peak times eg.  1700  to 0000
and weekends as stated in  BT's T&C's

  • Read this if you are thinking of ordering infinity...

Ordered infinity on 1st of June, had my conformation email after ordering stating that i would have a engineer come and do some work. asking me to be at home 8 Am till 1 PM (even though i ticked the box that said you don't have to be there for this visit as it will be external work). 13th came and no visit. OK i thought no problem as its external work no drama (lost a days pay though).
2 days later bt emailed me saying" sorry we missed you, your new appointment for the engineer will be the 18th also asking me to be at home for this visit 8AM till 1PM, Bt never turned up for this one aswell, No phone call email or text message to say why they have not turned up.( another days pay lost) so i rang bt 0800 800 150... 45 minutes later and 2 bt employees from India that could not help, they put me through to bt infinity division in England. Sharon apologised for the 2 visits that was missed but could not understand why. Sharon put me on hold so she could ring the engineers, 15 minutes later i was told that they would not be coming out today (18th) and she would put a message in there departments diary for some one to ring me on the 19th to explained why and put me on the high priority list.
7.30 pm on the 19th No phone call!!!!! so i rang again 0800 800 150. 20 minutes later and 1 lady from India i got through to the infinity diversion again and asked why no ones have rang me like i was told and promised (Sharon words not mine). Vicky from bt infinity could not believe what had happened to me and was shocked, my activation date is on the 25th and Vicky told me that i should not have had the 2 visits from the engineers until the activation date was completed ( ok £200 notes down the drain for taking 2 days off for no reason) she promised me that some one would ring me tomorrow 21st i told her i have already been feed that line yesterday but she promised they would.
guess what happened...... no phone call....... so after me ringing bt at 7.30pm tonight and finding that the department was closed via a pre recorded message (8pm is the time they close i checked) i tried one more time and got though to a lady that did not have a clue even after reading the notes on the system. she tried to ring the engineers department but got no answer. WHAT A F... JOKE...
I have never had such bad and disorganised customer sevice in my life ( i work in Customer Service myself)
I will be ringing bt back tomorrow in the afternoon to find out if there is anyone that can really help me find out what is happening to my order.
ps. to top it all off my home hub and welcome pack was due today 21st. that did not arrive and i have tracked it. its in isle of man rang the post office and they said it had been sent there by mistake (i live in Chester) now i am worried that if everything goes ahead on the 25th i will not have the home hub in time to start using infinity lol
if you are thinking of ordering infinity good luck you are going to need it after my experience

I feel your pain Bro, had a lot of hassle when I first got infinity, and lately had a bit of hassle before and during the upgrade. There is a serious communication error between various departments at BT and this is something they need to sort out. In my opinion it has lost them a great deal of custom and a great deal of money. As I am from N. Ireland I ended up having to get in touch with my local office in Belfast to sort the problem out and they did it flawlessly without any messing about.
    1. Had engineer out regarding slow speed and I suspected it was a Retail server problem, engineer told me full speed was coming into the premises and reported this back to BT and Openreach.
    2. BT said there was no problem with the server, sent another engineer, same thing...etc etc...Reported back to Openreach.
    3. Openreach said there WAS a problem and that they have now fixed it, guess what...not fixed.
    4. Another engineer call out, same thing.
    5. This went on and on for 3 weeks
    Ended up doing this:
    1. a. Contacted local crew in Belfast.
    2. a. got a call back the next morning and was told they will not be sending anymore engineers.
    3. a. Line fixed within 2 hours of the call, and yes, you guessed it. Server problem all along.
BT needs to stop automatically blaming a lot of the faults on the end user and instead listen to the customer or they would have had this job fixed that same day. Instead they wasted money sending loads of engineers which could have been available for other installations etc.

  • Thinking of moving to Infinity

    Hi,
Im currently with Virgin Media on the 100mbs service which is over contested and thinking of moving to Infinity. I was wondering if i could get some answers on some installation issues im thinking about and hoping to get them sorted if possible before i place my order.
I live in an apartment so everything is on the same floor (no stairs)
Currently the master phone sockets are in the hallway (both BT and VM) but my computer is in the bedroom. I do not wish to use wireless as i use the computer for online gaming. My question is, will the BT engineer fit a new socket in the bedroom so that the hub can be next to the computer and directly connected and if so what cost will be involved if any with fitting this.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give, Jay.

    Hiya,
When the guy installed my Infinity service, i asked him if i could have the main socket moved upstairs. He did it free of charge.
He routed the new line from the master socket to my bedroom and installed the new socket there..
    Hope this helps!

  • Just ordered BT Infinity

    Hi All
Just ordered BT Infinity option 2 package 40mb down 10mb up. Speed checker estimated 39.5 down, and the full 10 up. Reading through the posts on here I am slightly anxious about what to expect. I download heavily, game often and stream on a regular basis. Moving from o2 where I have been getting 24mb down, but only 700k up. I understand a lot of people won't post on here, if their service is running fine. The cabinet has just been activated as well, so hopefully no teething problems. Activation is for the 5th of december, so hopefully all goes to plan. Already thinking of changing the router though!
Any tips or recommendations to get the best out of this service (other than keeping the engineer who'll be coming to do the install happy)
    TIA

So my advice is to use the Openreach modem Until you are sure that there are no problems with your connection.
I have to disagree with that.
My neighbour never waited more than 1 minute with his 2750, the BT installer hadn't even got back to his van when he plugged his 2750 in, settings already verified using my Infinity connection and got 40Mb/s down 8Mb/s up and has done ever since.
Got profile 17a straight off as well.
If he had an unstable connection and on day one had replaced the modem, he would not have known where the problem lay.
Actually he did have an unstable connection about a month after installing, rate changed all over the place, really obvious with 2750 status page, ending eventually with no connection one evening.
Traced to flooded manhole in street. Once drained and connections replaced the Infinity was back to 40/8Mb/s again. I know why my connection next door was not affected, as years ago I suffered dropped ADSL, traced to water in pipe to my house so BT filled the pipe to my house (both ends) with a silicone plug. So I assume the water now was going to his house
Phoned BT one evening and a man came out and had fixed it by 8:30 next morning. BT man didn't seem at all bothered non BT equipment as being used.
Please carry on, i see there is no point in going on with you.
    Goodnight

what is the difference b/t the macbook a1432 and a1181, i think i ordered the wrong case?

A1181 is any of the seventeen models of the white or black MacBooks with the removable battery.
A1278 is the one model of the Aluminum Unibody
A1342 are the two models of the White Unibody
    There's no model A1432.
To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.

how do i get to actually speak to someone at bt about ordering bt infinity without having to talk to that ridiculous automated answering service.
if it wasnt bad enough having to go through all the different menus, but now having to actually say why your calling ect makes me feel sick and i simply hang up.
worst thing you have done in my opinion , please get rid of it.
never thought id be asking to go back to the menus but it seems i am.
unless of course bt did something extroadinary and introduced a phone service where you would ring and an actual real life person answered it 1st time , but hey , technology isnt there yet is it ?

  • Ordering BT Infinity (Lead Times)

    Hello,
I am renovating my new property and I am planning to move-in in around 6 - 8 weeks. I am led to believe that lead times to get a BT infinity engeneer in to install the broadband is around 2 - 3 weeks.
I am happy to order it as soon as possible but my questions are:
    1) How far in advance can you book an engeneer?
& 2) When does you contract start? Am I required to start paying for the services from the date of the order and therefore id so will I be required to pay for 1 1/2 months or does the contract start when the broadband is installed and up and running?
If anyone can help me with these questions I would be very greatful.
    Cheers
    Paul

    Hi Batchy and welcome,
It's best to place the order a few weeks in advance so if there are any problems we can get it sorted. The contract will start as soon as the service are up and running.
    Cheers

  • Nightmare ordering Bt Infinity!!

At the moment im on adsl broadband, I only get 1-2meg line which is pants as the estimated was at least 4! An engineer came out and couldnt find any faults. He asked me if I was interested in Infinity as it is at the cabinet in my street but im not connected. I have rang up numerous times now to order. Each time I am told yes I can have it but have to wait 48hrs till the system updates as its a new house/line. So far BT have never rang me back to re-start the order! The firsI rang was 24th Jan! Can any mods help with this please.

If you would like to contact one of the UK based BT Care Team who moderate this forum, they should be able to help you.
They can be contacted using this link BT Care Team

  • Thinking about upgrading to infinity but moving ma...

My master socket is upstairs currently and there is an extension that runs from that and the wire goes around the outside of the house and enters into the hallway. I was ideally hoping to get it all moved and ready for installation before even booking an installation appointment.
Would BT disable both the sockets and install a new master socket at the front of my house In a front room? A hole would need to be drilled through the wall then the new master socket connecting up?

Thanks for the response is that home wiring solution you speak of internal?
Because like I say I want the master socket moving to a front room which will require a hole drilling through the outside wall and the cable directing in (I don't really want extra wires running internally when all it needs is one wire running outside the house and then in). I have no need for the 2 sockets currently connected and would happily have them disconnecting so the new master socket would be the only socket in the house.
I doubt the infinity engineer would do this thats why I stated i'd have no problems getting this done beforehand but was just wondering if BT would do this for me and at what sort of cost. Think I was hoping someone on this forum had done something similar and could give me their impressions on this regarding cost etc.

  • Thinking of converting to Infinity

    Hi
If anyone has any experience, or advice on the following it will be much appreciated.
I currently have BT Total Unlimited Business Broadband provided via ADSL on my home telephone number.  The broadband used to be on a business telephone line but was moved when the business closed in order to save the cost of an exchange line that wasn't used for any calls.  The move was also made to keep the "btconnect.com" email addresses that were in use for personal messages and had been in existence for over ten years.
I am a BT shareholder and have received a tempting offer to take up BT Infinity 2, inclusive of Anytime calls, if I switch to a home Infinity service.
I can't find a straight answer as to whether I can keep the old btconnect email addresses (we have 7 or 8 in use) or whether they will disappear in favour of a single new btinternet address.  I can find mention of the ability to set up email aliases but not whether I can have more than one actual address.
There seems to be some question as to whether the existing home telephone number will be ceased and a new one provided.  My current number has been in use here for nearly 40 years so I would not wish to have to change it.
In an attempt to sort out a fault last year, an Openreach engineer installed a Home Hub 3 (incorrectly as it turned out when it kept falling over) but the wireless range was far worse than my old Netgear DG834GT and devices less than 20 feet away could not get a reliable connection.  I don't see why it should be, but is the home hub 3 any better with Infinity or would I probably end up with a range extender (Powerline maybe)?  Opening ports on the home hub 3 (for use with an XBox) didn't seem to be as successful as on the Netgear router.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes I've checked the BT estimates - 54.5/18M for Infinity 2.  The ADSL broadband we've got not is around 5/0.8M so there is potentially a big difference if we can get round the email and router issues..
We had a fault last year, coincidentally (??) when the local exchange was being upgraded when the broadband kept losing sync and our speed dropped from 10/0.9M to 2/0.3.  That was when we acquired the home hub as the engineer who eventually came out was blaming the problem on our old Netgear router.  The fact that I connected another router with no difference didn't convince him.  When the home hub kept falling over I found out he hadn't installed it properly anyway.  I wasn't comvinced the home hub was new as the engineer went out to his van and reappeared with just the hub and the power unit, no other cables, paperwork, etc.  That initial experience, and the very poor wireless coverage (which BT technical support said wasn't of any interest as they don't guarantee it will work anyway) together with the difficulty of getting the correct ports open for XBox use don't inspire me with confidence.

  • Ordered BT Infinity but....

.....it says the following under "Your appointment"
"We will contact you shortly to re-schedule your appointment, if you wish to contact us regarding this, please call us on 0800 800 150."
, i have called the number and the person speaking said the original appointment time was available and left it as the same day.
Not sure what else i should do any advice please ... ?

The order status is "on track" despite me getting an email saying -
"BT here, we called you today as your original appointment has been cancelled, please call us to confirm a new appointment for installation of your BT Infinity"
i also got a phone message saying the appointment had been cancelled, because bt infinity will now not be available untill december.
the open reach website has my exchange as accepting orders "Sandal = SAUID - MYSAN" and is listed on the "accepting orders" PDF aswell. i suppose it could just be my area where they are not accepting orders but i find that strange as all the cabinets have been built for months.
Putting my number into the infinity checker shows that infinity has changed from available to 31st december.
Other FTTC providers such as sky still show it as available and probably havn't updated their info yet i guess.

  • Thinking of joining BT Infinity

I am considering joining BT Infinity since Virgin Media has become very un-reliable. Their Technical Support team is made up of a bunch of idiots, just yesterday I spoke to a guy who didn't even know what latency was.
Is BT Infinity truly Unlimited? I currently use upwards of 500 GB a month with Virgin Media, will this be a problem on BT?
What is the uptime and reliability like with BT Infinity?
What is BT Technical Support like? India Based? Skilled Knowledgeable Operators?

  • Thinking of migrating to Infinity?

Im currently with Zen, had no problems for years but their fibre package is expensive and capped (although it does have fixed ip's and no throttling).  My exchange FTTC live date is the end of March 2012 and the exchange has no LLU currently.
If I stay with Zen will they just be reselling me the Infinity service as there is no LLU?

So basically, if I stay with my current ISP I will get the same speeds as a BT subscriber, taking into account the service differences, capping, no throttling etc?  Are the package differences the only way to influence the quality of service without LLU?
What I'm getting at is; why pay £38 per month for 100gb uncapped and an £80 setup fee and only 2mbit uploads and great tech/customer service when I can get the same DL speeds and up to 10mbit upload speeds, no FUP but peak throttling for certain packets, no fixed ip but I can live with that (use dynamic dns), **bleep** service for no setup fee and £25 per month.  Contracts are similar 12 and 18 month.
I've read loads of negative Infinity posts, but forums are usually full of problems rather than praise and I've never had any issues with my ADSL service.  Do I stick with the cap to ensure a consistent service or go for the better deal?
