Took Macbook in for repair at a family shop. They switched computers on me!

Hi guys,
Just last week, I took my Macbook in for repairs at a family shop. The computer was actually purchased at this same shop about a year ago and I got it used, and for some reason it was running slow. They told me that it could be that I needed a software update, but that they will take a look at it. I informed them while they were resolving that issue, I would like to purchase an external hard drive, and if they can transfer my pictures, videos, and music to my external.
A few days later, I did not receive a call from them, so I called and they told me that they needed more time. I called them again later that day, and they told me the same thing. I called them the next morning, and they said they still needed more time. At 6PM, they finally told me that it will be ready by 7PM.
When I picked it up that evening, I noticed a few things.
1) All my data on my internal hard drive was ERASED. I asked him where was my data, and he told me that I told someone that I wanted to transfer EVERYTHING from my internal to external. I said no, I just wanted some media backed up to the external, but not to wipe out my internal.
2) It was not my computer! I noticed little things here and there and determined that it was not mine and they somehow provided me another one. The computer now has a different name to it and also a different password to which I do not know. My original computer also had scratches that I can easily recognize, and on this computer, it shows none.
At this time, I am still holding on to this computer. It was my mistake for not obtaining the serial number before I I gave it to them for repair. The receipt when I purchased it does not also show the serial number. My question is....Is there a way for me to try and obtain the serial number? Maybe through my other Apple devices such as my iphone? I want to submit a police report, but I cannot justify this w/ out any proof. Your thoughts?
Thank you!
Jackson Dinh

Have you ever taken it to an Apple Store (to the Genius Bar)? They would have records of your serial number, as well.
Conversely, you can get the serial number from this computer, call Apple, and see if there was any history of repairs for it. That way, if they show any cases or repairs opened since you've owned your computer (and that you haven't done), you can easily tell that this was somebody else's.

  • Can a friend bring in my laptop for repair to an apple store?

Hi I am an American living in Italy. I have a friend who's going into NYC and I wanted to know if he could take my macbook into for repair with my warranty? Does he need to bring my ID or a signed approval?
    Thanks

My suggestion would be to have your friemd ask what ID is required when he calls the store for the appointment to deliver the MB.
I know when I took an iMac in for a friend, I asked and the Apple Store I was taking it to said that there was no problem.

  • I sent in my Iphone for repair.  They sent me a replacement and it says insert SIM card.  Its an Iphone, I thought they had internal sim cards?  So confused.

I just received my Iphone 4S back from Apple. Sent in for repair due to unable to connect to WIF box was shadded gray.  They sent me a replacement phone and when I turned it on it says to insert the SIM card?  Very confused as I thought Iphones did not need a SIM card.

    Hi
Don't understand your confusion as all mobile phones require a SIM. You would have installed it yourself the first time you got the phone from your carrier or they may have helpfully put it in for you and you did not pay attention at the time. A trip to your carrier may help as they may issue you with another SIM card?
Did you leave the SIM card in the phone when you took it in for repair? If so then the store that did the repair should have transferred it for you? Get back to them and ask them the question.
Have you used the SIM slot tool (looks like a paper clip and is in the box the phone originally came in) to check if the SIM is still there? Maybe it just needs re-inserting?
Just a few things you could try?

  • I was given the wrong macbook when I gave mine in for repair.  I want to complain.  Also, they wiped ALL my data off the hard drive.  I want to complain to someone in authority.  How?

I am extremely disappointed and angry with Apple service.  I am a writer and booked three weeks in Spain so that I could finish my book.  On the second day my laptop cut out on me asI was working on it, so I took it to Goldenmack in Cadiz.  Not only was I given someone else's macbook when I went back to collect it, but then when I returned to the UK, the Apple shop in Brighton managed to delete ALL my data from the hard drive because I was unlucky enough to get a trainee on her first day.  I have since learned she should not have deleted my data without even running a diagnostic.  She told me she was going to 'restore' the drive.  I took this to mean she was going to restore my work.  But no!  She erased the lot.
I complained and eventually was put in touch with a supervisor, who I was told  had authority to resolve the issue. She said she would get the shop to phone me.  That was ten days ago and I'm still waiting.
Ok so there's nothing I can do now to get back the three chapters of my book that I have lost and didn't back up, but the  hard drive on this laptop is still faulty.  I try to back up my work every time I use the machine but as soon as I attach an external drive, the whole thing shuts down. I can't use it any more as I can't risk losing any more work.    This laptop is only just over a year old and this is just not acceptable, especially since I have really looked after it.
This is an appalling service I have encountered from Apple, and I am not going to ignore it.  I have contacted the young chap whose laptop I was erroneously given, and the repair of which I paid for! (although I did eventually get a refund),  to ask him if he had been given mine as well.  He said he had been completely unaware that his laptop had been given to me and he is furious as he had loads of "sensitive material" on it."  I have no idea in whose hands my laptop has been either, or indeed what damage it sustained while it was supposed to be in for repair.

    Contact Apple Support:

Be sure to refer to the repair ticket number.
    Sounds like a terrible mixup.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Would like to know if I can connect a macbook pro and link to a PC in any way and still access the macbook pro's files. Display is out/have black screen. I want to back up before I send for repair, but don't own another mac to restart 7.

Is there any way to connect my 2011 macbook pro to my PC laptop (Dell) so that I can get files off of the Mac? The display on the pro is out and I've got a black screen. The computer turns on. Actually it turned on one time after many tries and when I took it the Mac store the guy hit restart before I could stop him. I don't have another Mac to back up files to in restart 7 mode and I can't see my external hard drive to copy to when the computer has no display, so I am at a loss on how to get the files. I would like to get them before I send in for repairs. Any suggestions are appreciated.

The only other thing I can think of is to pull the drive out and hook it to another machine with a USB enclosure. Something like this:
    http://www.amazon.com/Vantec-NexStar-2-5-Inch-External-Enclosure/dp/B002JQNXZC/r ef=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1388312417&sr=8-2&keywords=2.5+enclosure
Then you could read it like an external USB drive. It's easy to open up and get the drive out.

  • New Macbook, bringing in for repair

Hi, My Macbook is less than a month old and I'm having problems with it (sometimes doesn't turn on, potential logic board problems etc)
I'm planning to take it to a Authorized Apple Servicer, but would it cause any problems that my HD is partionally partitioned to WindowsXP operating system? Should I remove that part before bringing it in for repair?
    Thanks

That shouldn't cause problems at all, especially if you used Boot Camp to do it. Apple has put Boot Camp out there so should expect that some machines are going to come in with Windows installed on a second partition.
No need to remove it that I can imagine.

  • How do I get my MacBook pro to the depot for repair?

MacBook has keyboard problems. How do I send it to the depot for repair? Telephone support gave me an address depot.info.apple.com but that just swing me back to the express lane for advice.
    Thanks for your help,
    Cx

The way it has worked for me in the past was
    1. call Applecare
    2. once they decide it needed to be sent in for service, they arrange with their shipper to have a box dropped off (used to be Airborne express, not sure who they use now)
    3. shipper drops off box with all packing material (tape, foam, instructions) and a shipping lable.
aside - back up your hard drive!! Apple will not contact you if anything they do involves reinstalling the OS and wiping the drive to do it - it is entirely up to you to safe guard your data BEFORE sending it off to Apple.  Also might want to de-authorizse the machine in iTunes incase any hardware repairs change the hardware ID of the machine and you have to use another authorization when you get it back to get iTunes to recognize it.
    4. user packs up machine, calls shipper to arrange a pickup
    5. shipper picks up box - off to Apple, repaired and returned
These were for in-warranty (or AppleCare extended period) repairs.  I think if out of warranty, they require a credit card number to charge the shipping to.

  • Macbook is slow; will it help to bring it in for repair?

My macbook has been getting progressively slower over the 2 years I've had it. It's becoming unusable. I'm using only about 30% of my memory.
I have called apple customer support and I did both of the things I was asked to do (delete system files and something else, I don't remember.) I was told that this was all they could do, at least over the phone.
Do you think that the Genius Bar people would be able to speed it up?
The nature of my school/work (CS major) is such that being without a laptop is a huge inconvenience. If it isn't going to help to send it in for repair, I'd rather just buy another computer... maybe a PC.
Thanks for any advice/experiences you can share.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Preparation for MacBook Pro 2011 repair

    Hi,
I have one of the MacBook Pros eligible for the repair programme.  It's got to the point where it won't boot at all. I'll be taking it for repair shortly.  My questions are these:
    1. I know Apple say to back up before taking it for repair, but does anyone know what the likelihood is of them wiping the hard drive?  It currently has Yosemite installed but not the latest 10.10.2.  Are they likely to install 10.10.2 as part of the repair, and if so can they do this without wiping the drive?
    2.  If I needed to back up this laptop, any suggestions for how I could do it (since it won't boot)?  Could I boot it in Target Disk mode and copy all the files to another machine?
    Thanks in advance.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 Repair Extension Program for Video Issues -Feedback?

Anybody have any feedback from the MacBook Pro 2011 Repair Extension Program for Video Issues?
I had my early 2011 15 inch 8,2 repaired (free) under the extension program. The machine now appears to run well - but much hotter than before. The case is significantly hotter - especially at the GPU corner and the fans are constantly on moderate to high (not full). Anybody else experiencing similar changes?

  • Mailing off macbook for repair--how long should it take?

Sometime next week I will be mailing off my macbook to have the optical drive replaced under warranty. Since I'm mailing it to some shop in Texas and I'm not taking it to an apple store, I assume they will have the parts on hand and will fix it immediately--by the day after they receive it--right?
For those of you who HAVE mailed off your macbook for repair: how long did it take to get it back? A week? 2? 3?
    Thanks!

The place you're mailing it to in Texas is one of the main facilities where Apple fixes portable computers in the US. Their turn around time is typically same day, or usually within 24-36 hours. Factor in shipping to and from (Sundays if involved) and you'll get your machine, barring any shipping incidents within 5-7 days (or less).

  • New macbook after old sent in for repair

So I sent my white macook core duo in for repairs since it would not recognize the battery. Three days after sending the computer in I received a call from apple saying that they wanted to keep my computer and send me a brand new one. Something about doing research on that particular problem. Has this happened to anyone else?

no problem at all, just trying to see if this has happened to anyone else. not only am I getting core 2, but I am also getting double layer dvd and i think i heard someone say that the wireless was improved. what else is different between the first and second generation?

  • Iphone damaged on receipt why do I have to pay for repair

We have a family contract with Vodafone, we were due an upgrade towards the end of last year and wanted an iPhone 5c in time for Xmas. We contacted Vodafone  towards end of October 2014 and they said we could anytime now so we ordered the iPhone. We briefly looked at the iPhone then it was wrapped ready for Xmas. On xmas day the phone was turned on for the first time and a couple of days later we took it to the Vodafone store in Swindon to get a new sim and activate phone switch contacts from old iPhone etc.... My daughter then noticed the speaker on the phone wasnt very clear and had to use it on loud speaker....she returned to the store who said they would have to send it off for repair but it would take a couple of weeks....since my daughter is at university in Bristol she asked if it could be taken there instead. She sent it off for repair mid Jan and has just received a message saying it will cost 204 to fix as the mesh is damaged and it is not under warranty.
Surely a a fault with a phone overrides any warranty. I am disappointed with both the service I am getting.

Yes we contacted our service provider to ensure we could upgrade our phone in time for Xmas as iPhone was daughters Xmas present. provider told us we could upgrade anytime now (end out)  we received iPhone and after one quick physical check wrapped it in original box. was opened on 25th and we took it to pro idea local store on 2nd Jan....told it would be sent off for repair taking up to 3 weeks....daughter at uni in different county so waited until she went back to uni to take it to providers local store there.... Sent off then received text,es sage saying the mesh was damaged and £204 for repair.....I asked how could an internal piece be damaged by her when there was no physical evidence from the outside ....told it was normally to do with the ihone being crushed!!!
SO effectively even though we physically received iPhone at end oct it was not turned on or activated on Vodafone until after Xmas....call us naive but I did have faith in Apple products and customer service

  • Anyone's whine fixed after sending for repair?

    All,
Sorry to keep harping on the whine issue, but I have not seen a lot on the forum from those who have their MBP's in for repair. Has anyone sent their machine in for internal hardware replacement and received a whine-free MBP in return?
Many have mentioned logic board and temperature sensor replacement? Interested to know how the repairs turned out.
Interestingly, I just received by MBP back from a white spot repair. They replaced the entire LCD and all the hardware. The best part is that on the bottom bezel where "MacBook Pro" is written some of the letters did not get filled in with the silver letter inserts, so I officially have a one-of-a-kind "MacBoo Po" It's very strange, there are indentions in the bezel where the letters should be, but not actual silver letters.
    -JB

Mine just got pack this morning. the paperwork says that only the inverter was replaced, anyways its still makes a noise from the hard drive and a very very slight buzzing noise from the area the whine was coming from, but nothing like the whine and it doesn't vary with brightness, but my whine took time to develop and get louder so I am keeping my fingers crossed that I can leave the Macbook running while I sleep again (I have trouble with any noises, my GF's dell drives me insane even the power brick on that thing whines)
anyways I talked to them last tuse got the box on wed shipped in at 4:30 on thurs (took it to the local hub) and got it back today.
