Toplink compared to its competitors and futur of this product in O/R domain

I am sincerely disappointed by the evolution of TopLink whereas I have been in favour of this product for several years at important customers.
1- New version 10.1.3 (10.0.3 included) has been in beta for almost 3 years!
2- patch corrects only the bugs without any evolution on the level of the functionalities, all the new functionalities are in the 10.1.3 which does not manage to leave. By way of comparison of the product as KODO JDO brings in each patch: New features + Notable Exchanges + Bugfixes 3.4.0 - 3.3.4 - 3.3.3 - 3.3.2 - 3.3.1 - 3.3.0 -! I AM JEALOUS OF KOKO CUSTOMERS
You can see KOKO evolution on 2005 at : http://www.solarmetric.com/Software/Documentation/3.4.0/docs/relnotes.html
3- Other editors (KODO+COCOBASE+JBOSS) start to set up beta versions EJB 3.0 with “very very “complete documenatation and product. Whereas Toplink provides only examples (tutorial) over OC4J (10.1.3 preview in beta since 3 years!) . No real toplink (bata vversion) of Documentation or Product. Like KODO 4 @ : http://www.solarmetric.com/Software/beta/4.0.0EA/

4- 4 10.1.3 preview Toplink brings functionalities JCA, JAXP but not much of things on the level of mapping O/R: updateAll, cacheEviction, returning, java.util.logging. These functionalities already available on the others concurrent product do not make me any more dream !
I hope that it other evolutions (not announced) on Object/Relational scope ?
5-     does Oracle have still wants to really invest in O/R mapping. There is much marketing, much of mediatic show (Eclipse, GlassFish, EJB3 lead) but not much of technical evolutions compared to competitors.
Thank you to product management make a factual answer because I am a real customer, I am really in favour of the product for 5 years. But I am really disappointed when I see new small actors (KODO...) much better doing?

I am sincerely disappointed by the evolution of
TopLink whereas I have been in favour of this product
for several years at important customers. I am sorry to hear about your disappointment. Hopefully I can provide some insight into where we are with TopLink. It is a critical part of our J2EE/EJB infrastructure providing its classic POJO persistence as well as EJB 2.1 CMP/BMP, and now our preview support of EJB 3.0 persistence.
1- New version 10.1.3 (10.0.3 included) has been in
beta for almost 3 years! As an integrated part of the Oracle Application Server we ship in coordination with the overall release. I understand your frustration and we are working hard to ensure we have a high quality 10.1.3 AS release as well as a first rate persistence solution.
2- patch corrects only the bugs without any evolution
on the level of the functionalities, all the new

0/docs/relnotes.htmlOur patch-sets are just that. Patches to fix issues important to our customers. They are not new feature releases. As an independent product (prior to the Oracle acquisition) we also had many smaller releases but we were also not well integrated with any container. This integration providing better diagnostics, management, and out of the box support requires us to integrate with the container. I believe you will find Kodo will start to feel this as BEA starts to deliver an integrated persistence solution that may compete with TopLink's complete solution.
Note: This does not mean that we are not supporting other containers. We do extensive testing across non-Oracle databases and application servers to ensure that we continue to work well there as well.
3- Other editors (KODO+COCOBASE+JBOSS) start to set
up beta versions EJB 3.0 with “very very “complete

0EA/docs/At the time of our EJB 3.0 preview we had the best support available for both within the container as well as outside the container. This was primarily documented through how-to's. As we move towards our release (post 10.1.3) that implements the complete specification, which is not yet final, we will be delivering more complete and formal documentation.
The feedback I had received on our how-to's has been excellent to date. It does require more updates now with our 10.1.3 release to address additional functionality we will be providing in the EJB 3.0 persistence areas.
4- 4 10.1.3 preview Toplink brings functionalities
JCA, JAXP but not much of things on the level of

I hope that it other evolutions (not announced) on
Object/Relational scope ?If you look at the list of new features in 10.1.3 here you will see that we have also invested heavily in improvements to our core ORM.
updateAll = UpdateAllQuery
cacheEviction = cache invalidation/expiration (time-to-live) as well as cache coordination mode using invalidation
returning= we have a returning policy for use with triggers and stored procs
logging = we have updated our logging infrastructure to use java.util.logging
Many of these and others have been available in our earlier previews as well. We have a dedicated team here focused both on ORM as well as OXM (including JCA). I would estimate that 75% of our efforts have been on enhanced ORM functionality.

5- does Oracle have still wants to really invest in
O/R mapping. There is much marketing, much of
mediatic show (Eclipse, GlassFish, EJB3 lead) but not
much of technical evolutions compared to
competitors.I believe with 10.1.3 we raise the bar of ORM persistence solutions. The new ORM functionality and improved mapping editors will provide existing users new features they have been asking for as well as help grow the developer community. Our community edition of TopLink in GlassFish delivers core ORM persistence to those projects where the full licensed product is not required as well as providing these customers a seamless upgrade to the full solution when they wish to.
As this release comes out we will be updating our collateral and I will strive to ensure our continued leadership and investment in ORM functionality is reflected.

This does make it clear that we need to be more vocal and clear about our work as well as getting the 10.1.3 release out the door. I appreciate the feedback and will try to address these concerns directly.

can open any adobe product on windows 8. its always says cannot use this product under a guest account... this is the licence version of adobe cc master collection. also i did use the product past few months without any issue...

Older trial versions are said to be found at the following sites:

  • Does anyone from Adobe offer feedback and support for this product?

I'm a teacher at an elementary school and run our morning news show. Currently we're using rather old hardware to run the show through closed-circuit, but are in the process of getting what we need to run a software solution instead. When I watched the video for VC3, I liked what I saw. It was a major part of why we decided to go with a software solution. It seemed to have all the right pieces for what we need to do.
However, the more I read about it on this forum and around the net, it seems that support and instruction for this product is non-existent, and that the product itself can be buggy at times. This has me quite concerned. It looks like this program is a few years old now, and I can't find any recent updates or news about it. Before I make the purchase, is this a program that Adobe even supports anymore? Is there anyone here at Adobe or elsewhere in the know that can/will provide guidance and troubleshooting if needed?
If not, does anyone here have any other products that they have experience with that might provide a better alternative? We're still looking to run this as a live show through a closed-circuit, although we could prerecord the show and stream it if necessary, but the turnaround time would need to be quick.
    Any thoughts?

There is an entire community of Visual Communicator users at http://TeachMeVC.com where you can browse topics and ask questions if you become a member (free).
Nobody bothers to monitor the forums on the Adobe site for this product so we encourage you to join us at TeachMeVC.com and subscribe to stay in the loop.  You will find users that span from the education, business, government and personal users of Adobe Visual Communicator.
Also consider my training DVD series and equipment recommendations that have been used by thousands of VC users over the years.  There is NO competing product that gives you live greenscreen capability, teleprompter, easy workflow, wizards, and a ton of included media content.  At this point in time, Adobe Visual Communicator is a unique product in it's class!  The next comparable option is to spend $8,000 to $10,000 on a NewTek Tricaster that has a huge learning curve.

  • Please uninstall and re-install this product Error Code 6

I have 7 users running single licenses of Adobe Acrobat X Standard and 5 users running a multi license version of Adobe Acrobat X Pro. between Wed 14/01/15 and Thursday 15/01/15 all of these products stopped working on all machines. All machines are windows 7 machines. They are throwing up
    "Configuration Error"
Please uninstall and re-install this product.
    Error code 6.
    It then closes the program
When i run this product as an administrator the error message still appears but it allows the program to run. When i then close the program it does not close to process so the next time i open adobe it gives me the error message that the product is not licensed. I assume this is due to the product running in 2 instances.
    I have tried:
    un-installing the product,
i have currently set all my users to local admins to have a work around.
I have used the adobe clean up tool and removed everything i can think of to do with adobe.
    I have re-registered the products
I have edited to permission and followed the guide for Error Code 16 as it was a similar problem.
None of the above has worked so far.
This is now a matter of urgency and any help would be appreciated.

Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you? If so, does iTunes launch properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

Thank you!  My solution was different.  I had turned off services in MSCONFIG and did not turn them back on.  After I turned services back on, Acrobat started  working again without the nag error and impedance to use the program.  I appreciate your input!  Adobe customer service/tech support was dismally disappointing.

  • Need help with Photoshop and "Licensing for this product has stopped working" message. Adobe fix isn't working.

I am still using CS3. A while back I received an error: "Licensing for this product has stopped working" for my CS3 programs. I used the recovery program suggested by Adobe and was able to get Illustrator, Flash and Dreamweaver to work, but I still can't open Photoshop or In Design. I went back to the Adobe site and did every other trick they suggested to fix the error, but nothing has worked.
I then tried to uninstall photoshop from my CS3 suite (so I could reinstall) but got a JavaScript Alert: "Critical errors were found in set up. Please see set up log for file details." Seeing as I am not the best with the behind the scenes technical stuff, I have no idea what this means or where the set up log even is. Any help anyone can provide?
I have had CS3 installed on my computer for over a year. I started having problems about 4 months ago.

I am having similar problem.  Can't open any of CS3 programs after trying to download Dreamweaver Trial, which wouldn't work because "couldn't remove DLM extention" error message.  So now I can not run Illustrator, Photoshop, or even Adobe Reader.  These are properly licensed for about a year. I get "License for product has stopped working".  Have 2 pending cases open with Adobe support (one for Dreamweaver trial, one for license problem) since 8/3 with NO ANSWERS - It says answers within 1-3 business days.  Was on phone support hold today for over 3 hours before line went dead with no help.  What is up with adobe support?  Can anyone help?

It's good for users to push Adobe on this, since Homesite is
still an active enough product that they still sell it, and still
include it as HomeSite+ in Studio.
And, while it does need updates, it's still very useful as-is
to many web developers, myself included.
I wouldn't give up on it yet, though it certainly wouldn't
hurt to let Adobe know if you would like them to continue to
develop it, and what updates would be important to you. I'm
    certainly doing that.
And remember that HomeSite is is highly user-customizable, so
you can extend it yourself, as many users have, or you can download
extensions that other users have created. Check my asp4hs/php4hs
site for most of them. (and please let me know if you have
    something you'd like to share).

Firefox shut down & updated in the middle of my work; I could not restore my session; you have literally cost me my job and future if this cannot be fixed. I don't understand why it updated without me prompting it to. It also never ask to report a crash.
I went to play a youtube video, my entire screen flashed, when the screen came back, the youtube video screen was green. I refreshed the page and my system stopped- a blue screen appeared and something about verifying disk or something. My system the restarted, and when I opened firefox, it first said preparing updates and when it did finally open, the new updated version, of course, I could not restore my previous session.

You can check in the Firefox profile folder to see if there are numbered sessionstore-##.js present.<br />
The sessionstore.bak file could also have a previous session.

You must repair the problem by uninstalling and then reinstalling this product or contacting your IT adminstrator or Adobe customer support for help
I already Uninstalled and reinstalled the product and it still does not work.

    Hi,
Try to uninstall the software again and you have to manually
    Delete the following folders:
    [Startup Disk]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PCD
    [Startup Disk]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/caps
    [Startup Disk]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/backup
    [Startup Disk]/Library/Preferences/FLEXnet Publisher/
    [Startup Disk]/Library/Application Support/FLEXnet Publisher/
Go to Applications-->Utilities-->Disk Utility, Open it and Select the MAC HD and then click on Repair permissions.
After that try to run the cleaner tool as mentioned by kglad.
Restart machine and then try to install again.
*** Make sure , you only delete these folders if there is no other adobe applications installed on the machine. As if you have any other Adobe application of the suite ( not free applications ) then it will be a problem.

it says:  You cannot use this product at this time.  You must repair the problem by uninstalling and then reinstalling this product or contacting your IT admin or Adobe customer support for help.
Well it seems I am only able to install this on a maximum of 3 computers so if I uninstall and reinstall I may have used up all three.  What caused this in the first place?

And most licenses extend to 2 machines; not 3.  Your computer's clock probably reset when you changed batteries. Is your computer's clock set to the correct date and time now?

Since you don’t allow emails any more – I suspect because of the numerous complaints with your service and the way you treat people that you don’t want documented, I am calling and I want this call recorded for future reference.
I have been a long time faithful customer of vzw and although the past year I have been late on payments many times and really couldn’t afford your exorbitant prices for services lots of other companies offer sometimes three times cheaper than what you charge, I have hung in there trying my best to meet my obligations.
This month has been no exception. You don’t know the background; the whole story of people’s lives. I know you could care less because all you care about is the profit-the money that comes in.
I was told when I agreed to pay my bill on the third per the recorded message that I had 14 days to pay…you cut me off anyway. The phones are not the tissue; your suspending my service means I cannot work. I may lose my job…how do you justify that? In any case? The least you could do would be to keep 4986 on and cut the phones off. But no. You refuse to compromise and meet the basic needs of your customer. What does that say about your company? I tried to call back on three separate occasions to tell you I couldn’t pay because of unexpected expenses but couldn’t get out of the automated system…sadly couldn’t get to a real person which also speaks volumes to me.
All this tells me this is a company I don’t wish to be affiliated with any more. As soon as I can, I will discontinue service with you…I know you could care less. I will honor the remaining portion of the contract but that’s it. You don’t deserve my business. I am a good, hardworking person who, at the sacrifice of myself and my needs, always pays her bills…albeit late at times. I realize others tell you stories and lies to justify themselves. That’s not me. If you knew what I had been through the last 7 yrs you would marvel that I am  still on my feet…don’t judge too quickly. You could be wrong…and in my eyes you are by doing this to me.
God will see us through this extremely scary time of that I have no doubt. No thanks to your company and lack of understanding and mercy. I am doing the best I can. Sadly you are not.
See I have choices. MANY choices of providers for services you offer. I don’t have to be treated like this. I don’t have to succumb to your coldness and callousness. I intend to choose better (and cheaper). If your company doesn’t get the “people factor” back you will be sorry.

Problem here is you admit you cannot afford the service.
And you want to blame Verizon for losing a job because you have no cell phone.
If your job depends on that phone I would pay it on time every time if you need a job to pay your bill.
No other service is going to treat you any different. And if you cannot afford Verizon's monthly invoice how are you going to afford new devices, activation fees, possible security deposits on any other cellular carrier? You can't.
Also if you made an arraignment to pay and then decide you cannot do so, why should Verizon extend you service or credit, or why is it you want to use the service and data and not pay for it as agreed.
Get a prepay phone. Its evident the cost is too high for you to afford on post pay.
    Good Luck

  • A tale of a Berkeley DB project: Success and future developements

The site http://www.electre.com is an on-line catalog of all published French books (close to 1 million of them), from the 1970’s to today, with pricing and availability information for professional users.
The entire book database and search engine was developed with Berkeley DB. The site runs relatively problem free, and owes much to the stability and quality of the Berkeley DB source code. Moreover, the software is sold as an intranet version and runs on remote configurations that are out of our direct control. And yet, we don’t get much problem reports from these remote sites.
Development started in 2002. Using Berkeley DB was my decision. It was, with hindsight, a very good decision, but it would be hypocritical to affirm I knew all along it would work out so well. It was partly a gamble, and partly a calculated risk. I am not ashamed to confess that when I finally made the decision to go with Berkeley DB, there were some key areas in the technical design I had no clue how to tackle. Needless to say, any flaws that remain in this area are due to lack of knowledge and lack of foresight on my part, not because of some flaw in Berkeley DB.
What convinced me 4 years ago to “go for it” was Sleepycat’s no-nonsense approach to support from guys like Michael Cahill, Keith Bostic, John Merrells, Dave Seglau, Michael Ubell, Liz Pennel and others. Support was sending a message to [email protected]. Replies were never more than a couple of days away (including time zone differences). There was always something comforting when you read a reply from someone who says he “owns your problem” (especially when you also saw that someone’s name in the source code <g>). The majority of support questions were asked during evaluation and product development, before even a single dime was paid to Sleepycat. (Now that we sell the product as a closed source Intranet solution, we gladly pay the required license fees, of course). The fact that the project development went so well was in no small part thanks to the competence and reliability of the people I communicated with. I never expressed my thanks, so now is as good a time as any to do so. Thanks, guys (and gals).
When Sleepycat was bought by Oracle, it was rumored that the goal was ultimately “to kill the product”. I thought that was ridiculous and an exaggeration by some paranoid people (especially from the MySQL-camp). I understand that Oracle is a big company, and that things are done differently now. Besides, how do you “kill” a product? I didn’t know until I hit my first support question “post-Sleepycat”. So now I do: you kill a product not directly, but, but by a process of what I call “incremental discouragement”. It’s a subtle, 3-pronged approach:
    1)     Erect bureaucratic barriers between competent people and your customers. No more [email protected], but a slow and unwieldy web site and a support procedure hiding behind numbers and requiring a 2 hour training session. I’m not sure how I’m going to motivate to management a 2 hour training session for a product we’ve been using for the past 4 years, and which I now master sufficiently to reduce my support requests to about 3 a year, and for which the only difference is a change of company name. There’s a “free” forum, but the primary motivation for it seems to be to allow users to support themselves. Yes, questions are answered on the forum… but compared to the level of support I’ve been accustomed to from the same people in the past, I can’t help noticing something has changed… and not for the better. Some questions aren’t even acknowledged, though they are read over 300 times.
    2)     Add useless levels of indirection: when we sell an intranet, we asked Sleepycat to mail us an invoice, which we got within the week. Now we ask Oracle the same thing: the last time we did this was on November 27 of last year, and we still waiting for someone from “the Belgian office” to contact us. The only reply we got was from someone telling us our request would be passed on: a level of indirection not exactly adding value.
    3)     Increase useless Information Noise: www.sleepycat.com was all about Berkeley DB and related products. Look at any page on the www.oracle.com site supposedly about Berkely DB and count the number of items and links pointing to products that have nothing to do with Berkeley DB. It’s like that famous analogy: you’re only interested in a banana, and you must take the whole gorilla.
Berkeley DB is the fire behind the electre.com site. Our customers are satisfied, so this is not going to change for this version. But this developer is now convinced to view Berkeley DB as a medium to long-term liability. The fire will be kept alive for the remainder of this electre.com version, but for future versions and other similar projects, other solutions will have to be found. These other solutions will involve a similar gamble as the one I made a few years ago with Berkeley DB. My only hope is to meet similar competence, friendliness and professionalism, but without the overhead and bureaucracy of an organization for which the product is not even part of the core business.

    Vincent,
I hear the frustration and concern in your post. I'd like to assure you that we're still here doing what we've done in the past and that your business is valuable to us, don't give up yet! :)
Moving from a company of 30 people to a company of >50,000 people has been an interesting transition for us as well. I have to say that honestly, things are pretty good here inside the realm of Oracle. Of course, some things were bound to change. Oracle has processes in place to acquire and grow companies and that is their intended goal with Sleepycat's Berkeley DB products. As such, some customer facing processes have changed and our home on the internet has been incorporated into the oracle.com site. The interesting thing to me is that even within Oracle's infrastructure you, the customer, are not really much further away from our engineers and support staff than before. Your suggestions, concerns, questions and bugs go directly to us via the same people pre-acquisition for the most part, although that staff is growing. With these OTN forums you have a way to speak directly to most of the Sleepycat staff, 99% of whom are still here at Oracle nearly one year post acquisition. So, I'd argue that we've done a great job of keeping that small company feeling in one of the largest software providers around.
Our web content is 80% identical to that which was on the sleepycat.com sites. Bookmarking one or two locations within Oracle and OTN will get you straight to that information. Sure, there are other product references floating around on the same page and we hope that over time Berkeley DB products and other Oracle products complement each other when used in combination. In general, I believe that most of the web experience is identical with different style sheets and a few extra links.
Support for eval customers continues to be something we provide free of charge via these forums and in private email conversations with our staff. This is unchanged. Ownership of customer issues is much the same as well and we do still use '[email protected]' for tracking issues once opened. We agree that '[email protected]' method of communication was simple and highly effective for us and our customers. We are working with Oracle's support infrastructure to consider adopting similar methods. This is another reason Oracle purchased Sleepycat, to learn from our efficient effective operational model. This is something that is ongoing, in the mean time we still track issues behind the scenes the same way as before with the added information provided by TARs so that we fit into the overall Oracle support infrastructure.
The rumors of our early demise are highly exaggerated. Berkeley DB products are alive and well in Oracle. Just look at the releases we've made in the past 12 months.
As for our three pronged attack. ;-)
    1. The distance between first contact with support and helpful information has, in some ways, increased. This is due to the Oracle infrastructure for support that manages all Oracle products. The forums are the replacement for the discussion email lists we managed at sleepycat.com. We're managing a much larger amount of traffic than in the past and most of it is done with the same Berkeley DB engineering team you've come to know and love. Maybe we need to make it more obvious when we answer a question by having a signature indicating who we are, sometimes that's not obvious. As to the particular question you posed, I don't know what happened but the same thing can happen on an email list. My apologies for the lack of a response.
    2. Oracle has a huge sales force worldwide. We're only beginning to fully function within this new infrastructure. Sorry we dropped the ball on your sales inquiry, rest assured that we're interested in all commercial deals. Once connected into the Belgium office you'll have a direct relationship, as before, with a sales rep for your use of Berkeley DB.
    3. I've already talked about this. Oracle has many products, we're just one of those. We have to fit within the overall site structure. For the most part I'd give us an A- or B+ for transitioning our sleepycat.com information into oracle.com and OTN.com. If you have suggestions as to how we might improve that, drop me a line I'm all ears.
In general I'd like to believe that you and other developers like you will find that our place in Oracle doesn't prevent you from choosing Berkeley DB. Certainly it is a bigger company with some additional process overhead, but hopefully not so much that it prevents you from remaining a loyal customer and someone who would recommend us to others.
    regards,

  • Detail of legacy license and future price increases

    Legacy Licence:
I currently have a licenced retail copy of Photoshop CS6 that would allow me a reduce rate for 12 months membership of Creative Cloud.
If I took up this offer and in 12 months time decided not to renew Creative Cloud membership which of the following happens.
    1. I can re install (or re-enter the code of) My old Photoshop CS6 and continue to use it on my desktop and laptop just as now
    2. Taking up the Creative Cloud offering terminates my license in some way to use my retail Photoshop CS6 and I will not be able to use it.
    Future price increases:
Have Adobe released a statement detailing how they propose to increase charges for Creative Cloud in future years?
Which of the following is true:
    1. Increases will be in line with inflation with no sudden large price hikes.
    2. Adobe do not rule out larger than inflation increases in cloud membership
Hope these questions dont sound too paranoid, a clear answer to both these questions will help both myself and my clients determine their response to Creative Cloud membership.

    Hi Ken,
Thanks again for the rapid reply.
I do appreciate that you may not be in the loop on this but it is a concern for myself and my clients.
The good news is that upper management will know as its their duty to plan for such things. They may decide not to let me or you know what those plans are in which case we would need to infer the likely reason for non disclosure.
Lets not run ahead of things however!, I think it only fair to allow management time and space to answer this question.
Just to clarify: current and future pricing was top of my mind when I saw the Creative Cloud offering, future price increases were a concern for some of my clients also, it is not a trivial question and is best answered by someone who does determine pricing plans. It will significantly influence the decisions of myself and my clients (and no doubt many other users) if we can get a clear understanding of price increase principals for Creative Cloud.
    Many thanks
