Toshiba A110-228

Hi, my girlfriend needed a laptop so I recommended buying this laptop for only 550 euro : toshiba A110-228  http://www.hardware.info/en-UK/productd … E00j003DU/
Now I've put arch on it. I just installed the normal stuff (xorg, icewm, etc).
I've configured X using hwd http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg#hwd
Then just changed resolution to 1280x800 24 bit. And videodriver to "i810" .
Wireless internet by installing and loading the "ipw3945" module and "ipw3945d" daemon.
Then installing networkmanager. http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Networkmanager
The nm-applet works great in icewmtray (start icewm with icewm-session).
Alsaconf has no problem finding the soundcard.
To use sd card reader load these modules: sdhci mmc_block
Fn keys just work in X. (ofcourse not hybernation or standby -but brightness, numpad, etc do)
I loaded these modules to scale the cpu:  speedstep_centrino cpufreq_ondemand cpufreq_userspace cpufreq_stats cpufreq_powersave
The laptop works great with arch linux, definately a good buy. It's incredibly fast (my computer is way older ).
toshiba_acpi doesn't work with this laptop because it has phoenix bios.
Installing gnome-power-manager gives the ability to hibernate etc. Only thing I needed to do was add a sudo line in visudo to be able to start it as normal user and then add a line in .xinitrc to start on boot. Also add a kernel option in /boot/grub/menu.lst : resume=/dev/your_swap .
Also need to find a batterymeter. EDIT: I enabled the built in icewm battery meter. EDIT: now I use gnome-power-manager instead.
Then I'll try running photoshop because she needs it for school. sighh
Here's the rc.conf (don't know if cpufreqd works just saw someone else having it ):
# HARDWARE
MODULES=(r8169 ipw3945 sdhci mmc_block speedstep_centrino cpufreq_ondemand cpufreq_userspace cpufreq_stats cpufreq_powersave)
# NETWORKING
HOSTNAME="myhost"
lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
INTERFACES=(lo)
# DAEMONS
DAEMONS=(ipw3945d syslog-ng netfs crond dbus hal cpufreqd dhcdbd networkmanager)
EDIT: So now I've got everything working with almost no installation problems. It couldn't have been easier then this (just needed to know what to install). Arch linux rocks!

I don't know, I think arch linux is very easy to set up if you got a good internet connection and are able to read the documentation (wiki). I found Ubuntu Linux much more difficult when I tried it out, because I wanted to change something and the underlying system is much more complex. Ubuntu also didn't work well with an external hd while arch worked right away.  But I might be a bit strange as I did start linux with slackware, which I found really easy to install too. (I find WinXP quite hard for several things)
networkmanager not being perfect has nothing to do with arch.
Now that all is installed it's no more difficult then any other linux for a normal user.
I chose for Icewm because it's fast and easy to use (familiar windows look). The icewm control panel makes it easy to change background, themes, menu, hotkeys,..
It can run gnome applets in the tray, so giving easy power management and networkmanager.
Using menumaker and editing a little bit I've got a very easy to navigate menu.
Easy to find the needed program. (compare that to the chaotic start menu in windows!)
I'm surprised how easy it was to get a functional good looking desktop for the laptop, while still keeping it incredibly fast.
Like always, in comparison to windows there's no viruses to worry about, no crashes, no defragmenting, no warez needed, ... A downside to many : no photoshop, gimp is too hectic.
In comparison to other linux's it's faster, easy to install (opera,mplayer,flash,...), packages using sane defaults, easy to upgrade (now and then a bit difficult - no reason to update all the time so let someone knowledgeable do it sometimes), easy configuration with rc.conf
I recommend arch to every noob of who I know (s)he wants to use brains just now and then
Ofcourse, to everyone his own

  • Satellite A110-228 LAN does not work after hibernate

Well, subject says it all, really. The LAN (wired) network does not work after hibernate.
It seems it cannot find the DHCP server, so after a while it gets a 169.* address.
After a reboot, the network functions as usual (gets a IP address from the DHCP server)
Tried the usual things, disconnecting the cable, disabling the LAN device, battery or AC adapter, the behavior is reproducible.
The wireless network will be restored after a hibernate.
It needs a little help though (right click on the icon and "recover" or whatever it is called in English)
    Any suggestions?

    Hi guys
In the Toshiba HW setup which is placed in the control panel the options Wake-up on LAN and Built-in LAN should be enabled.
I think the options are disabled by default.
Furthermore the default setting for Wake on Settings is OS controlled. To use the Wake-up on LAN function under power off mode, in the device driver for the network card under the menu point Wake On Settings the Value Wake on Magic & Directed must be set.
Please check this how to enable WOL (first time use):
    1. Go to [Start] -> [Control Panel] -> [Toshiba HWSetup] -> [LAN] tab
    2. Enable Wake-up on LAN
    3. Click [Apply]. System will request to reboot.
    4. After the reboot go to [Start] -> [Control Panel] -> select [System]
    5. On system properties dialog box select [Hardware] tab -> click [Device manager]
    6. On Device manager dialog box select [Networking adapters] -> double click [Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection]
    7. Go to [Advanced] tab -> select [Wake On Settings] property -> Select [Wake on Magic & Directed]
    8. Press [OK] to close the dialog box.

  • It takes long time to connect Satellite A110-049 to Actiontec GT701-WRU router

    Actiontec wireless router model GT701-WRU
Since buying a Toshiba A110-049 running Windows Vista (this was necessary because the old laptop gave up the ghost) We have been having problems connecting to this router.
Using the old laptop, running Windows XP, connection was instantaneous and reliable.
Now, using Vista, it takes a long time (10 minutes or more) to get a connection. In fact, we pick up signals from more distant networks more readily than from our own router.
I have been in touch with Actiontec technical support, who have been very knowledgable and helpful in the past. However, I am told that nothing can be done about signal problems.
I think it is rather strange that there were no signal problems before migrating to Vista: the router and laptop are both in the same locations.
Is there a known issue with either this model laptop or router?
I'd be grateful of any help.
    John

Sorry to raise this problem again, but I have just discovered something.
Routinely, when I first boot up without connecting to the wi-fi router and then later attempt to connect, I can be waiting for twenty minutes or more before the router is 'seen'. Today, in fact, I waited for an hour without my laptop finding the router in the next room, whereas a neighbour's (unsecured) Linksys router was picked up instantly. Having become rather fed up by now I re-booted, this time via the 'Internet start button' (sorry, I can't remember its proper name, but it's the button just below the main start button on the left of the keyboard!). This time it connected with the router immediately.
Can anyone suggest what is happening here?

  • Satellite A110 reboots automatically after every shutdown

    Hi!
    I have the following problem:
When shutting down the system, my notebook first goes off completely as desired, but 2 seconds later it starts again. It behaves different from a usual reboot - then it does not turn off, but reboots directly. Furthermore I can exclude software problems, since I tested it with different operating systems and the behaviour is the same everywhere. This problem was not there earlier, but then suddenly occurred and is now there every time.
Ah, also important is that if the AC adaptor is NOT connected (i.e. notebook runs solely on battery), the problem does not occur. If the notebook runs on AC power, the problem occurs, no matter whether the battery is in the notebook or not.
Can someone help? Every hint is highly appreciated!
    My notebook is a
    Satellite A110-228

    Thank you very much!

I have the same problem on an A135. I've updated the bios. I changed out the hard drive. (I have a few of these computers.) THIS IS NOT A SOFTWARE or FIRMWARE problem. This is a hardware problem. I just don't know what kind. When the power cord is plugged in the computer will not hibernate or turn off correctly. It will shut down then start up again in 5 seconds. When the power cord is unplugged both hibernate and shutdown work correctly. However, sleep mode doesn't work in either condition. Sleep mode always turns off the computer without doing a proper shutdown. Anyone have any ideas??

  • Satellite A110-160 turns off by itself when im making a dvd to divx conversion

My Toshiba A110-160 turns off by itself(abruptly) when im making a dvd to divx conversion(autogk for example).
    This didnt happen before..
I am using an updated bios v1.7(the latest).
Do you think it is because of that?? I have also made a memory upgrade(2GB,667mhz) and I am using windows xp and ubuntu.
    Any ideas?

    Hi there,
I don´t have any clue why the machine shuts itself off and I cannot give you a quick solution but I can give you a thought how to make some accurate troubleshooting:
Remove the newly installed module and try it again. Then give some feedback if it worked. If not we have to discuss further on that issue, would appreciate some feedback from you.

  • Satellite A110 - BIOS for Win7 and FN keys functionality

    Hello
I have installed new Windows 7 on my toshiba a110 notebook and surprisingly almost every device was dected and installed by win7. There was problem with PCMCIA but driver for Vista solved the problem. But I have still problems with Function keys and additional buttons. Do you know what driver I have to install to make Fn keys work?
By the way I would like to ask if toshiba will make drivers dedicated for toshiba satellite A110 Windows 7 ?
I have another problem with BIOS.
I saw that there is new bios update avaible for my notebook but I don't know what version should I use for WINDOWS 7 ?
    21/01/09
    BIOS Update
Toshiba Windows Vista 32 Bit 5.40-WIN World Wide
    21/01/09
    BIOS Update
Toshiba OS independent 2.00-WIN World Wide
I thought that if I have win7 OS indepedent bios update should be fine for me, but in this version there is a warning, that 2.00-WIN bios is not dedicated for Vista users. I've heard that Windows 7 is based on Vista OS so now I completely don't now which version should I choose.
    Wating for help
    Simon

I presume your Satellite A110 will not be supported for Win7. That means you will probably not be able to find any driver, tool or utility designed for Win7.
In my opinion you should be happy that Win7 works and you don't have serious problems with well working hardware. So you probably must live without some Toshiba specific functions like FN options but most of them you can use in different settings.
About BIOS I don't say much but, as far as I know, Toshiba will not offer special Win7 BIOS update for old notebook models and if everything works well you don't need BIOS update at all.
Anyway for me it is logic to use latest BIOS designed for Vista OS.

    Hiya
    i have a 30gb ipod.
When playing a playlist it plays only part of the song before jumping onto the next one. some times its 10secs other times its near the end of the song and anywhere inbetween.
    can anyone help?

I have the exact same issue with a 5th Gen iPoad with 30GB. I also posted it on this forum without any reply. There doesn't seem to be any contact with apple support. Question: how do problems get resolved? - How does apply support stay in touch with its customers? Does apple have any support?

  • Equium A110: Toshiba Disc Creator crashes

I have an A110, with XP loaded as supplied and I am using *Toshiba Disc Creator* (because I was told Toshiba turned off windisc because it would conflict).
The problem is when I burn a Data CD for photo backups etc the operation is successful but *afterwards the disc creator program freezes* and will not shut down properly.
I have tried cntrl plus alt plus delete, and tried to select the application and shut it down too but it just can't force it to shut down and it uses loads of system resources so I am eventually forced to switch off with the power button, which I hate as I understand an improper shutdown can really mess things up!
So do you cool dudes have any suggestions. Is there a patch out there, or could I use another CD/DVD burning programme, I haven't yet because of what I was originally told about conflicts?
    Awaiting your wisdom.
    Thanks

    Hi,
did you already checked on the Drivers Download page for some newer version of the Toshiba disc creator? Maybe its just an version which conflicts which some other software on your computer.
What I would suggest is to reinstall windows and install ONLY the Toshiba tools and nothing else. Please take care of the installation order which is listed in a document -> downloadable from the Drivers Download page.
If it then fails then it could be some kind of software problem but if not then you know that some other 3rd party application interferes with the disc creator.

  • Satellite A110 Upgrade - Xpress 200M problem, lost Toshiba software

I own Toshiba Satellite A110-110. After using this laptop for a two years with pre-installed system, CPU and RAM I have decided to upgrade it. So, I change Celeron M410 for a Core Duo T2450, 60 GB HDD for a 250 GB HDD and 512 MB RAM for a 2 GB RAM and Windows XP HE for a Vista Business.
Installation of all parts and software went fine. Then, I downloaded and installed drivers for Vista. So what is wrong you might ask?
An ATI Xpress 200M, which could get from RAM up to 256 MB for graphic on Windows XP, now, with Vista, this graphic card in control panel displays only 128 MB obtained (shared) memory. What is more, there is no option to change settings and have that old 256 MB. Maybe someone knows the solution?
As the second main problem after upgrading my personal system is total lost of all Toshiba utilities like Connectivity Doctor, Wireless LAN search (transparent oval radar hide on the right side of screen with other options), SRS WOW Sound panel and other which were in based configuration.
Vista doesn't display anything though I put to the system some of it. If anyone can help to solve this problem and has knowledge where I can get that kind of software please give me a tip, and write what kind of idea you are able to share.
    Thank you for any help!!!
    chinar

Thanks Homer for your answer. I went to link which you have send me. Once again I downloaded all drivers for A110 with Vista from Toshiba Support Website. When I have started installing those drivers, during the process, some of drivers couldn't be installed because of lack of appropriate software. As I stated in first post, I don't have any pre-installed Toshiba software which were included to A110 at the beginning (with XP, manufacturer configuration). Drivers and software offered by Toshiba via its website contain rather updates than basic and full software which can be downloaded and installed on any Toshiba laptop. So, here we go again to the beginning. Moreover, even if some of software were installed succesfully I still can't use Connectivity tool (that oval radar for searching available wireless intenet), I can't see and set SRS Wow sound panel beacuse there is no any set window to do this. Well, maybe they are not compatible with Vista and there is no possibility to see and use them like before (with XP). What do you think about it?

  • Sattelite A110-178 - Toshiba Power Saver for Vista?

Doest Toshiba Power Saver exists for vista? I liked it when working under XP, but now i switched to Vista Ultimate, and the XP-version doesn't work under Vist...
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi
Toshiba has also developed and Power Saver for Vista and if will be installed with the Vista Added Package.
But the Toshiba power saver for Vista doesnt look like the Power Saver for Win XP.
Toshiba Power Saver for Vista is a part of the Vista power options and you can find some additional entries in the Vista Power Options.
But you will not find a stand alone Toshiba Power Saver like for Win XP.

  • Satellite A110-203: reinstalled Windows, then Toshiba software was gone

I buy this model and operating system was on german (WIN XP), I reinstalled it on english language, but I cannot find those toshiba options which I had previous, like toshiba controls, power saving etc...hot keys don't work either: browser, CD/DVD commands on right side. I got 2 discs with computer, assist and recover or something like that. Maybe this is something easy or a stupid problem, but I am not such an expert, so please help :)
    Thanks

    Hi,
on the recovery disc is an image with the factory installations you had in the beginning (German Windows).
If you install the English Windows from a normal Microsoft CD, you have additionally to install all drivers and software from Toshiba. This can be found on your Tools CD or you can download it here:

  • Toshiba Satellite A110-103 bootup problem

    Hi,
I have had this laptop for a while know but the thing just broke down on me a few weeks ago.
I never had a password set on the bios or computer bootup.
But now it asks for it, the thing is out of waranty so i tried some things myself.
Shorting out the battery to reset the bios did not seem to work, it did show me a error message though.
0251 system cmos checksum bad - default configuration used
    error
0280 previous boot incomplete default configuration used
No idea if its related to the problem, but that is as far as it goes.
Pressing F1 to continue or F2 to enter bios just asks for the password again.
So my main question, is it fixable if so what costs would i be looking at.
And ofcourse any other ideas how to fix it.

    Yes.
Take a look at this document
    Document ID: 98082632http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/bulletin.jsp?ct=SB&soid=2232649&ref=EV
On the bottom of the document it says Toshiba will cover the cost until December 2010.
