Trackpad/Cursor behaving irratically?

Hello there!
I seem to be having issues with my 13" Macbook Pro. My cursor is moving/jumping all across the screen and has become unresponsive. I'm not sure if this is a trackpad issue or not. I have tried everything I have seen on the internet. It started occuring last night so I have shut it off, restarted it and unplugged the charger. Left it overnight shut off and turned it on this morning with no luck. I have reset the PRAM (Command+Option+r+p+), restarted it, went and threw my install DVD to repair permissions and what not. None of this has worked! I did go into my settings and turned off all track pad functions. Somewhat fixed it but the cursor is still being a problem as I type this. I also wiped off the trackpad to see if that helped. Now I am here asking for help. Can someone shed to light on anything else I can attempt to solve the problem before I take it to my somewhat local Apple Store?
I need my computer to complete homework assignments and projects so a fast fix would be fantastic!
Thanks,
Brock

  • Magic Trackpad Cursor Jumps or Moves Without the Trackpad Being Touched

Magic Trackpad Cursor Jumps or Moves Without the Trackpad Being Touched.
Try turning off your Bluetooth mouse or other nearby devices, especially if you find the cursor on your screen jumps or moves without the trackpad being touched. The cursor may also act strangely when the trackpad is touched.
The closest I found to a solution was in an old support article from March 2009 (TS1449), but it was through pure luck and MacGuyverism that I figured out my wireless Mighty Mouse was still on, nearby and thought it might be interfering with the signal to/from the Magic Trackpad. Sure enough. Turned it off and the problem instantly went away! Turned it on and the problem came back. Not sure if more distance would make a difference, but I saw no need for both on my desk anyway.

I have the same issue, but my mouse is turned off. I put the pad off to the side just to make sure. I just tried removing my mouse from the Bluetooth preferences. I've never had trouble with the mouse jumping before, but I do with the Magic Trackpad.

Hi, I believe I'm having the same problem as you, Zaby, with the jumpy keyboard / letters / unexpected insertion points. Creating any document on my 2008 MacBook, including in email, I'll be typing and after a dozen or so keystrokes, the letters randomly fly to a line somewhere above and the sentence continues there. Sometimes this overwrites previous sentences (argh!) and sometimes things are suddenly highlighted and overwritten, gone! Spontaneous combustion. (Apple Z restores but it's a horrendously frustrating process.) Then I have to go to the lines above and drag the middle of the sentence back to where it started. And repeat.
There's no discernable pattern. I tried making the lines very short because it happens somewhere into a line but this doesn't always work due to the randomness. Maddening!
My thumbs stay off the trackpad.
When I brought this problem to the Genius Bar, they pointed out that I had a "Crackpad" (which I had figured was normal wear and tear) and told me there's a quiet recall of the cracked keyboard/mouse/trackpad part. They said this could fix the problem. If not, the next step would be repairs to some cable beneath the keyboard costing $500 -- some kind of shorting between the trackpad, cursor and keys type deal.
So the top of the MacBook was made new again (which also fixed my "white key syndrome").
Problem with insertion points persists... up to now?
I've been reading the Forums for about an hour to find suggested solutions to this issue not costing $500. The problem is not so well documented (that's why I'm going into great detail). Aside from reinstalling SMS (?) and PRAM there was no consensus on why this happens or how to fix it. HOWEVER I just followed a suggestion to go into System Preferences and click "ignore random input" in the Trackpad section. I also slowed down the keystroke rate and the repeat rate in the Keyboard preference.
Suddenly I'm able to type this at my normal speed without the flying letters! I know this doesn't work for everyone and I'm quite skeptical that this will last more than an hour. But if the fix was that easy I'll be thrilled.
    cheers

  • My trackpad cursor freezes on my imac

Since downloading Maverick the trackpad cursor freezes periodically.  Does anyone know how to fix it?

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • HT6114 TRACKPAD CURSOR PROBLEM

Bought a new 15" MacbookPro Aug 2013.  From start, probs with cursor moving & adding,e.g. end of  word somewhere else in text. Last time Apple replaced top case.  Sympton:  "trackpad cursor not tracking properly"  I still have same problem with trackpad cursor frequently but unpredictably moving taking the remainder of the word, paragraph with it.  It does this in every program, mail, safari, notes, pages.  it also does this when I'm dictating but you can only see this on the computer screen as on the iphone you can't monitor how the speech recognition process proceeds as it tries to figure out what was just said.  (I just corrected one of these errors which just occurred.)
I've been in at least 4 times since august 2013.  They just replaced the topcase which I thought would fix the problem since that means the cursor was replaced as well according to the people at the store I talked to.
    HELP!

So did my sister who also just replaced her macbook pro but when they replaced something on her having to do with the cursor, it now works.

  • HT203171 Trackpad/cursor erratic when MacBook Pro plugged in

I have had trackpad issues and have followed the advice of the community. For 3 weeks the Mac has been problem free. Today once agian the trackpad/cursor are acting on their own and it is now apparent that the issues happen only when the Mac is plugged in. I have a Apple AC adapter. Under battery power the trackpad is fine. Any ideas?

I had this problem when plugged in to a 3rd party power adapter but when plugged into my original apple one or on battery power seems to work just fine.

  • Cursor behaving erratically

Since a few days back I am having a issue with my cursor. The little arrow seems to have life of its own. The cursor jumps across de screens sometimes even performing clicks.
I have a Macbook Pro Retina with Maverick 10.9.1 installed.
How can I fix this issue?
    Thank you,
    D

    Hello Diegooriani,
It sounds like you are getting some erratic cursor behaviour on your MacBook Pro. I recommend taking a look at the following information from the article named:
Portables and Magic Trackpad: Jumpy or erratic trackpad operation
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1449
The Apple Magic Trackpad and built-in trackpads on Apple portable computers work on a principle called coupling capacitance. As your finger moves over the surface, the trackpad evaluates the change in capacitance between two layers of measurement electrodes built into the surface of the trackpad and translates that to cursor movement.
Verify only one part of your finger is touching the pad. You cannot use a pen or other object--the trackpad is designed to work only with your finger. Also confirm that you are not resting your wrist on or very close to the pad. The trackpad may interpret this as your finger touching it and make the cursor move in that direction. If you suspect either of these is causing the cursor's behavior, try raising your wrist in the air and touch the pad with only the tip of your finger. If the symptom goes away then, you know that one of the above is the cause, and you should adjust the position of your wrist or finger.
If you have sweaty hands or if moisture collects on the pad, this may also confuse the trackpad. Wiping off the trackpad with a cloth or tissue usually fixes this issue. If the issue goes away when a piece of paper is put between the finger and trackpad you may want to consider purchasing a Teflon applique to fit over the pad to prevent the moisture from having direct contact with the trackpad. Before installing the Teflon applique, confirm the trackpad is clean and dry. You can use a mild glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth, not onto the trackpad itself to clean the trackpad.
Oil or lotion can also cause the same issue. Do not use hand lotion, or consider purchasing a Teflon pad to protect the trackpad. Before installing the Teflon pad, confirm the trackpad is clean and dry.
Jewelry may also cause interference. Try removing rings or bracelets and see whether the jumpy or erratic behavior disappears.
Apple has had some reports of this behavior related to power supplies made by a third party company. If you are using one of these power adapters, unplug it and try running from the Apple battery to see how the trackpad behaves. Also try using the Apple AC adapter instead of the third-party AC adapter. If the trackpad behaves normally while running from the Apple battery or adapter, there is most likely an issue with your third-party adapter.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Magic trackpad cursor position trouble

I'm finding that quite often after I position the cursor in a text field (like, say, anywhere in a text editor like TextWrangler or in xcode, or in the URL field of a browser, and then I start typing, the characters appear at the previous cursor position. If I stop typing to figure out what just happened, the cursor is still in the right position, and if I continue typing the text will appear in the right place, but the text I just typed is in the wrong place.
    Anyone else?

I have the same issue, but my mouse is turned off. I put the pad off to the side just to make sure. I just tried removing my mouse from the Bluetooth preferences. I've never had trouble with the mouse jumping before, but I do with the Magic Trackpad.

  • Trackpad cursor clicks somewhere other than where I'm clicking

I have a macbook pro OS X 10.7.  About 10% of my trackpad "clicks" end up activating something other than what I'm clicking on.  For example, I go to click a link on a webpage, and as I'm depressing the trackpad, the cursor jumps to my iPhoto application icon and activates iPhoto.  I then force a quit to stop it.  This happens about 10% of all clicks.  Very annoying.  I've contacted Applecare, they basically say it's one of those computer "glitches", so just live with it.  Anyone have a solution?

Do you have another pointing device (tablet, mouse, anything) plugged in at the same time?
Mac OS X uses "all devices active" philosophy. You ARE using any other devices you have plugged in.

  • Using trackpad, cursor 'jumps'. Any ideas?

My wife kindly bought me a Trackpad for my birthday last month and it was really enjoyable to use. After a short while I turned off my Magic Mouse and just uaed the TP. However, I quickly came across a problem inasmuch as when I was typing, and especially when back-spacing, the cursor often jumped to a different line or somewhere else altogether, whoch was quite alarming. I took the TP to Solutions in Chichester, where it came from, and they were outstanding, giving me an immediate replacement. I've tried it out and all went well for some minutes, then it happened again. Any ideas on what I should/could do next?

This is a common problem, and you will find many "solutions" by searching the Magic Mouse and TrackPad section of Apple Support Communities. Judging from the reports, some of them work, some of the time, for some people.
The solution that worked for me is to make sure that no cables are positioned between my Magic Trackpad and my Mac Pro. My Mac Pro is under my desk and my Magic Trackpad is on a pull-out wooden keyboard shelf just above it. I first discovered that when I temporarily moved my Magic Trackpad down onto the floor near the Mac Pro, the jumpiness completely disappeared. So then I moved it back up to the shelf and the jumpiness returned. Finally, I realized that two cables were hanging in front of the Mac Pro in a direct path between the shelf and the Mac Pro (I don't worry about the wooden shelf, because the documentation says wood does not seriously interfere with Bluetooth). As soon as I moved the cables out of the path, the jumpiness again disappeared. Both cables were USB cables connected to other peripherals using the USB ports on the front of the Mac Pro.
In the two weeks since I moved the cables, the jumpiness is almost completely gone. I still get a little occasional jumpiness, but only for a very brief moment when I first start using the Magic Trackpad after a long pause.
In a similar vein, I believe it might be useful to consider whether you have other Bluetooth devices near your Magic Trackpad that might be interfering with the signal. If so, try moving them, or temporarily removing them, to see if the jumpiness goes away.

  • Uncontrollable trackpad cursor movement/actions on MacBook Pro.

    Hello,
My MacBook Pro is the late 2009 model running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Just tonight while browsing the web, my cursor began to jump and jerk about the page; right-clicking, selecting, "four-finger-swiping" and other swipe features, opening folders, etc on its own. No amount of button pressing or attempts to take back control of the cursor helped. I do not have a peripheral mouse connected to my MBP--I only ever use the trackpad. I've turned off my notebook and restarted it but the cursor's behaviors are still the same.
I am lucky enough to be near a PC to ask for help/guidance since I am afraid to turn my MBP back on. Is there something I need to do to fix this? Is there a way to repair the problem without having to seek professional help? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really, really need my notebook.
    Thanks so much.
    ~Incho

This make a lot of sense considering my battery has been near its end for the past few months. It's only able to hold up to 3 hours—4 and a half if it's a good day—without A/C power as opposed to its 7-8 hours when it was new. Thanks for mentioning it.
I have a quick question if it's alright: Could the battery explode if I didn't change it soon or would it just die? I'm asking because, well, batteries aren't cheap. Plus I'm having a hard time finding vendors offline.
    Again, thanks for mentioning this.

  • Hearing quick repeated noises & cursor behaving strangely

This has happened twice in the past 2 weeks.
The cursor on the screen starts flashing and behaving oddly (jerking around on the screen and not going where I move it to) and I am unable to click on things or I don't get the expected results when I do click the mouse.
It feels like virus or something. Eventually, I had to turn off the computer using the power button.
On start-up, I hear a series of rapid sounds, which sounds like when you press the wrong key on a keyboard or you choose something that the computer considers invalid. I was unable to login and the login screen was suggesting my password (i.e., a**********m), which seems to suggest that it thinks I have entered a bunch of characters for the password but which isn't the password.
From my amateur observation, it looked like a keyboard problem. I would press escape and escape and try to enter the password slowly, one letter at a time but I could see on the login screen that more than one letter was being entered somehow.
I checked my keyboard settings and made some changes to the Key Repeat & Delay Until Repeat rates and this seemed to clear the problem.
But today, the same problem happened and last night, I was unable to get the computer to go to sleep or to log out of my user account.
It does go to sleep and I hear everything powered down, but then 2-3 seconds later the computer starts up again as if I had touched the keyboard or mouse (which I hadn't). So I had to fully shut down.
Upon starting up this morning, the same rapid beeping sound was heard. But the sound stopped by itself.
My cursor though is working fine and as per this question, I am able to type OK from the keyboard.
I've checked other questions on this subject but I can't make sense of the replies or apply it to my problem.

The rapid repeating sound is audible at start up and if I press the escape button the sound stops. It happens every time I start after having shut down (which I have to do now).
I ran Disk Utility and fixed the Permissions (I don't know why the Permissions keep going out of kilter?).
    One line said however:
Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.
What is this and do I need to be concerned about it?
I still have the results of disk Permissions scan so I can copy & paste that info if it will prove helpful.

  • My trackpad is behaving in a non responsive manner. Suggestions?

My trackpad has suddenly stopped working and the cursor flies across the screen all the time. Any advice? I have tried restarting and recharging but nothing helps.
