Trouble resolving one host name

I'm running Lion Server with two web sites hosted on it. The two domains are resolved through DynDNS.  I can see both sites both with and without the preceding www from other machines, but when I try to access one site from a browser on the Server, itself, it cannot resolve one address if I prepend the www.  It's very odd and I cannot find anything special about that one domain name that makes it different from the other.
Here are some lookups and pings I tried from the Server itself.  The problem is if I try to get to www.chanur.net.  As you can see, the lookup for that name gives different results.
chanur:sites mark$ nslookup www.chanur.net
Server:                    127.0.0.1
Address:          127.0.0.1#53
Non-authoritative answer:
Name:          www.chanur.net.twcny.rr.com

chanur:sites mark$ nslookup chanur.net

Address:          127.0.0.1#53
Name:          chanur.net
Address: 172.16.42.14
chanur:sites mark$ nslookup uticarocks.org
Server:                    127.0.0.1
Address:          127.0.0.1#53
Non-authoritative answer:

chanur:sites mark$ nslookup www.uticarocks.org

Non-authoritative answer:
www.uticarocks.org          canonical name = uticarocks.org.

Address: 74.79.103.15
chanur:sites mark$ ping www.chanur.net

chanur:sites mark$ ping chanur.net

The name I applied to the Server itself is server.chanur.net, and configured it in the Server app for "Internet" access so I could VPN in using that name. Could that somehow be causing a conflict of some sort?
Many thanks in advance!

Here's another example, where I do the nslookup from my MacBook Pro, instead of from the Server.
Node00:~ mdyson$ nslookup www.chanur.net
Server:                    8.8.8.8
Address:          8.8.8.8#53
Non-authoritative answer:
www.chanur.net          canonical name = chanur.net.

  • How to resolve a host name from IP using JNDI/DNS service provider

    Hi
    I got two questions on JNDI/DNS service provider:
    1) How to resolve a host name when i got an IP
    I understand How I do it inverse.
    Hashtable env = new Hashtable();
    env.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "com.sun.jndi.dns.DnsContextFactory");
    env.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "dns://"+server+"/"+domain);
    DirContext ictx = new InitialDirContext(env);
    Attributes attrs1 = ictx.getAttributes(host, new String[] {"A"});
    2) This example above works when I specify the domain in the provider url.
    If I am not specifing a domain but only the dns server I got an NameNotFoundException.
    What should I do if I don't got the domain?
    get the availible domains and loop on them?

    Hi,
    if your DNS server supports that, you can do a reverse DNS lookup. This works as follows:
    String server = "your.dns.server";
    String domain = "in-addr.arpa";
    String ip = "4.3.2.1";
    Hashtable env = new Hashtable();
    env.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "com.sun.jndi.dns.DnsContextFactory");
    env.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "dns://" + server + "/" + domain);
    DirContext ictx = new InitialDirContext(env);
    Attributes attrs1 = ictx.getAttributes(ip, new String[] {"PTR"});1: Use the pseudo-domain in-addr.arpa
    2: Use the reverse IP address for lookup, i.e. if your host has 1.2.3.4, use 4.3.2.1!!
    3: Request the PTR attribute

    Did you manually setup your wifi. Can not resolve host name usually means a problem with the dns. Which router are you using?

  • Error-couldn't resolve the host name

    Receivd this message when trying to connect to the internet.  any suggestions?  tried restarting tablet..still not working.

    That sounds like a DNS error.
    Go to your Options > WiFi
    Click on the Wifi icon with the question mark on it. Then use the drop down box and select Internet connection. You'll see your DNS settings. Make sure that you have stuff there and that they are valid.

  • Error - couldnt resolve the host name - anyone know how to fix?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Something in the DNS chain cannot convert from the english web page name into an IP address.
    In Browser pull down settings, Privacy and Security., Clear all.
    Restart Playbook.
    Restart router.
    It may clear itself if your suppliers DNS servers are choked.

  • Couldn't resolve the host name (AGAIN!!!!)

    I get this error alot! I've searched all kinds of forums and tried so many things that sometimes work (e.g., clear cache, restart). This is a common problem that renders the Playbook useless. It's so frustrating when you need to quickly jump online to check something and have to spend 20 minutes troubleshooting. What's the point?
    According to my Wi-Fi tab, I'm connected and everyone else in the house is able to access the Internet without a problem (they have Apple products, I'm an die-hard but slightly embarrased RIM fan).
    Does anyone know how to get around this error?

    Last time I had this issue was at a hotel and kept tapping the link and it worked
    At home I switched to opendns.org as my ISP DNS was overloaded

  • Problem resolving host name.

    Hi all,
    How can I resolve some host name's IP address? Example: I've got the host name "java.sun.com" and I need to know its IP address. How can that be done?
    I first thought about
    InetAddress addr = InetAddress.getByName("java.sun.com");but it threw an UnknownHostException, even though I were connected to the internet and could open this page in the browser.
    Again, how can I do that?
    Thank you all in advance
    Filipe Fedalto

    Oh, geez!
    You are right, I have a proxy. Is there any way I could still do it? I mean, the proxy gives me full access to the internet, so that if I type this URL into a browser it allows me to view the page...

  • Dialog Instance Host Name

    Hi,
    I am having a problem in SM51 where the dialog instance host name is the same as the central instance host name.
    Server Name     Host Name     Message Types                          Server Status
    HHA55_ECP_00     HHA55          Dialog Batch Update Upd2 Spool ICM J2EE       Active
    HHA56_ECP_00     HHA55          Dialog Batch Update Upd2 Spool ICM J2EE       Active
    We have a central instance and a dialog instance installed on seperate nodes in a HA cluster. This problem only happens when the message server runs on the primary node. When the message server is failed over to the node where the dialog instance runs the hostname for HHA56_ECP_00 is HHA56 which is correct. This is effecting load balancing and prevents me from signing on through the Portal with the HTML gui.
    I have checked the parameters for each of the instance profiles which are correct. The message server points to a virtual host and SAPLOCALHOST and SAPGLOBALHOST are correctly defined for each instance. I have setup each instance to use the logon group PUBLIC in SMLG. The hosts and services files are the same in each node of the cluster. I can successfully resolve the host names using DNS. Also the internal RFC destinations in SM59 are configured with the correct hosts.
    Does anyone know where the data for these host names is maintained?
    Thank you!

    I have solved the problem.
    I discovered the network bindings were being accessed in the wrong order.

  • WRT150N host name lookup problem

    When I try to access a computer on my LAN using the host name I get a unknown host message. When I use the computer's dynamically obtained ip address it works fine.
    Does anyone know if there is a way to make a WRT150N router resolve the host name. My old router used to doit, but i can figure out how to make the WRT150N do it.

    Let me know the Firmware you are using on WRT150N?

  • Host Name Configuration for Ironport

    Hi,
    I want to configure one host name with two ipaddress.
    Which record we can create???
    If both the IP's in Domain, we can achieve this???
    Thanks in advance
    Regards, Hari Prasad.D

    Hi Hari,
    If we creat CNAME record, we can map multiple FQDNs to single IP address.
    If we want to map multiple IP addresses to single FQDN, just create two A records with same name, then point them to different IP addresses.
    Best Regards.

  • How can I find the Host Name and Instance #

    I am having trouble finding the host name and instance #. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Kyle,
    Hope you are doing good.
    if it is the R/3 server, the easiest option would be to navigate to /nSm51 .
    Hope this helps.

  • Cannot resolve host names on local network

    It is a local network with router, few Windows computers with shared drives and one Mac.
    Windows shares appear correctly in SHARED and can be used without any problems, like iTunes and iPhoto libraries are on those shared drives and work properly, even if ip address of those computers would change.
    BUT - if I am trying to use VNC and connect to hostname:port, it says that server is not specified. If I try to ping hostname it says Unknown host.
    At the same time, similar ping from Windows computer work without any problems.
    It could be possible that router does not support something standard and communicates with Windows using something windows-specific, but what confuses me is that I can see computer names resolved in the finder already! Also, as I said iTunes and iPhoto can work with shared files on dynamic ip's which would be not possible if host names would be not resolved.
    Thanks.

    Domain Name Resolution for local IP addresses require a Local DNS server running on your network.
    Bonjour names will resolve without a Local DNS server. So this is why iTunes and iPhoto works as they use bonjour technology.
    A bonjour name ends in .local so in your macs sharing preferences you give the mac a name of imac its bonjour address is imac.local
    Other than that you are best giving your devices fixed IP address and adding there hostnames to your hosts file.
    the contents of /etc/hosts on your mac would look like
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
    ::1 localhost
    fe80::1%lo0 localhost
    so at the above that you could add for example
    192.168.1.5 mypc
    192.168.1.6 myprinter
    Then you could ping 192.168.1.5 by
    ping mypc
    So would have to add these entries to each hosts file on every computer on your lan.
    Or you could setup a local dns server and give each computer on your LAN a fully qualified domain name.

  • How do/did I get my printers' host names to resolve properly to their IP addresses?

    I have a LaserJet P1505n and I gave it a host name of "Laser".  I have a Photosmart C7280 and I gave it a host name of "Color".  When I provide my browser with the URL "Color", that resolves to the IP address of the Photosmart C7280 and I get the C7200 Series web interface.  All good.  When I provide my browser with the URL "Laser", that causes my browser to initiate a search for "Laser".  Not what I wanted.  I want to have the URL "Laser" resolve to the IP address of the web interface of the P1505n.
    How did I do that in the first place and how do I get it to happen for both printers?  This might be a printer unrelated question, but it works for one printer (the newer one) and not for another (the older one).  I thought I'd ask anyway.
    [Why this is useful is the same reason you have domain names - so you can type in www.google.com and not have to look up the ever-changing IP address.  Granted by printers change IP addresses less often than Google.]

  • Host-name - how do I find out which one to use ?

    Hello,
    Within a project I need to setup an MAC-OS-X server - since I am neither a network pro nor very familiar with MAC I am stuck with a quite simple question:
    In one of the first windows of the installation process (Mac OS-X 10.4.3) Server) I am asked to provide host-name, computername and rendezvous name.
    The computername is clear - but especially the hostname I don't know what to enter (the example given: www.domain.tld) does confuse me) but also what rules do apply for the rendezvous name ?. The server is not directly connected to the internet, it will be a dept. server within a university .
    I feel quite stupid asking for this but I can't afford wasting more time with this little thing. Thanks it advance for the help and patience with me.
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Unless your network is setup as an intranet, with a dns server resolving hostnames, you shouldn't need to worry about the hostname setting. As for rendezvous, it's usually in my experience, is the same as the computer name.
    Hope this helps.
