Troubles with X on a fresh install

Good evening folks, I'm a newbie on Arch but I managed to conclude the installation. Everything is fine but now I'd like to get X working, in order to have a GUI for common home use. I'm working on a HP Pavilion dv5-1050el, CPU Intel Centrino 1.7 GHz, ram 4 GB, graphic card Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT.
I've followed the official guide with no problem but after rebooting, logging in tty1 and giving startx, the screen got blank for a couple of seconds, then the Nvidia logo popped up screen-wide and at last blank screen again for circa 20-30 seconds, when the tty1 returned me, among other non-error messages, the following lines:
[...]waiting for X server to shutdown .. (EE) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.
xinit: server error
xauth: timeout in locking authority file /home/pinco/.Xauthority
I wanted a WM rather than a DE for keeping my system lightweight, and I was going for Openbox...
Any ideas about what I could do?
Thank you in advance

Hi markzz!
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/xo … stallation
Using the link above, check which driver is installed by running "pacman -Qe | grep <package_name>" to several different drivers.  If you installed any of the Nvidia proprietary drivers, make sure that you have completely installed it as described by the wiki.  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nvidia
As long as I could see, the official Nvidia package for my graphic card was nvdia plus nvidia-utils, which I had both installed.
Also, on the last line of .xinitrc, try separating the exec lines so that each of the three are on different lines.
Sorry, but I don't get what you mean with "so that each of the three are on different lines." ^_^''
Hi jasonwryan!
That line in your .xinitrc isn't from Arch documentation; it is completely outdated, remove it and replace it with a working one.
I'm afraid I don't know how I could do that (replacing that line with a working one; I mean)...
Hi HiImTye!
am I correct in assuming that pinco's UID and GID aren't "1001"?
echo $UID; grep ^pinco /etc/group
echo $UID; grep ^pinco /etc/group
1000

If it's the same machine (same CPU) there should not be any need to activate.  The actiovation is tied to your CPU.

  • [SOLVED] Need Help With Internet On a Fresh Install

    Greetings-
Can't connect to the internet on a fresh install guys. I've tried just about everything on the network configuration page...
    "lspci -v" returns:
Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 04)
    "dmesg | grep e1000e" returns:
    e1000e eth0:  Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Controller
So the module is e1000e on eth0
I try loading the module with "modprobe e1000e"
    ...Still nothing
dhcpcd eth0 not working either. That's about all I can think of.
Oh, and last command I ran was "ip addr | sed '/^[0-9]/!d;s/: <.*$//'" which returned "1: lo"
Any questions feel free to ask.

A little elaboration on the above:
A recent change in systemd means that during the boot process it will rename your ethernet device.  Doing "systemctl enable dhcpcd@anything" is hard-coded at this time to be "eth0" no matter what you put after the "@".  So, your dhcp client will not obtain an address.  However, if you omit the "@" the dhcp client will bind to available interfaces - which is what you want if all you have is a single wired connection and don't need esoteric configuration.
The alternative is to set up a network rule:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Re … interfaces
Providing the MAC address of your interface and the name you would like it to be.  Most likely "eth0" to bind to the above hard-coded systemd service enabler.

  • Trouble with BioExcess. Cannot properly install on v570.

So I was having trouble with BioExcess and I uninstalled the software. I reinstalled it (multiple times now). Anyways, everything appears to be working fine until the screen after the fingerprint enrollment. The reader reads the prints fine and accepts them and then when I hit the 'next' button and error message pops up and states:
BioExcess has not been properly installed! Please reinstall the software.
I've tried reinstalling about half a dozen times now but I keep getting this error message. Am I missing something? Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks!

Has nobody else had this issue?

  • I am also having trouble with my cursor freezing after installing Mavericks. Never did it before. I called tech support at Apple and they had me restart computer and mouse together from a complete shut down. So far has seemed to work.

I am having trouble with my cursor freezing between applications after installing Mavericks. Called Apple on my 3 year warranty and opened a case. They suggested a complete shut down of computer and turning off mouse. Then a reboot and turn on mouse. So far iit has seemed to work. Hope this continues??
    Hope it helps others.

I think you can solve your problems by removing your AppleID email address from BOTH the Messages setting on your iPhone and the iMessages settings on your Mac.
    On iPhone:
    Settings > Messages > iMessage > Dissabled
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > touch the "(i)" < touch "Remove This Email"
    On Mac:
    Open "Messages" application
    Click "Messages menu > Preferences
    Click "Accounts"
    Select your AppleID account
Under the "You can be reached for messages at" settings, uncheck your AppleID email address and your phone number
Then uncheck the "Enable this account" setting
And lastly, ask all of your friends with iPhones to delete all iMessage conversations (blue bubbles) in their entirety.
To test, send a friend a new text using their phone number (not their email address) and watch the color of the bubble.  If it's green then you are using SMS.

  • TROUBLE with Mac OS X Tiger install on G4 iMac 1.25 GHz

Trying to install retail copy of Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 onto an iMac G4 1.25 GHz running OS X 10.3.9. The DVD shows up on the desktop when inserted, but after clicking install and waiting for the reboot, the system just loads OS X 10.3.9 and NOT the 10.4 setup.
Inserting the CD and holding "C" during startup yields the blinking system folder with the question mark.
Apparently no firmware updates are needed and the iMac meets the requirements. Any ideas, suggestions, or workarounds are much appreciated.
I also have a MacBook Pro (Intel, of course), and was wondering if there was any way to use it to install the PPC version of 10.4 on the iMac. (Can I boot the iMac as target disk mode on my MBP and install the PPC version of Tiger onto it that way? I don't know if that will work with the intel/ppc hiccup.)
Someone please tell me how to get this working!

Yes, unless you have the original install disks that came with the computer ( with iLife included) you will have to buy iLife. However, iLife 11 requires an intel processor and snow leopard. If you don't meet those requirements you should try to find an older version. ( usually you can find something on amazon.com)

  • New hard drive but troubles with I tunes after re-install

I've recently had a new hard drive installed on my ibook G4. Its a 250GB Powerbook Hard Drive Western Digital Upgrade.
I did not have the disk for leopard as this machine was bought as a refurb, so we installed Tiger OS X from another Ibook G4 we have in the house. I used a firewire from the older ibook g4 to the one with the new hard drive to transfer the data.
Everything seemed fine, but I noticed that my Itunes library was missing. I searched through applications and found a folder marked Itunes with the missing music.
I tried to import them into the library all at once and it failed. So then we tried
to import them in batches like all of A then B etc.
It seemed to work but then when I closed I tunes and tried to reopen it, nothing.
It will not re open I get a window that says I tunes quit unexpectantly with the 3 buttons
try again (doesn't work) report and close.
Another issue that has just come to light is that when I was looking at a website called Edufire
(a free educational audio resource) Safari automatically shut itself down.
Not sure what to do next....any suggestions
And many thanks for helping with the mysterious ticking noise.

If you have actual music files in a folder, on the desktop, and then
have iTunes app open and running (not full screen) you can often
drag music files into the iTunes app this way and they will be seen
and copied into a file location chosen by the app itself.
As to the rest of the situation, the process may have worked fine
in a mechanical way, as far as it goes. However, you need to get
a correct OS X disc in order to not only maintain a legal license for
the use of the software (unless you have a Family Pack multi install)
and also for basic computer and system maintenance.
If the original software packet contents for that computer have been
lost, then you may see if (by calling the 800# in online Apple store)
you could inquire of the possibility of getting a replacement set; that
would be an original OS X install-restore set, as-shipped, for a fee.
In order to perform system maintenance, you boot the computer from
    the correct installer disc to run Disk Utility, and all the tools it offers;
including the proper formatting and partition, repair disk, etc on there.
And, if used with the iTunes Store, the computer would have to be
authorized. Having an unauthorized copy of an OS on what is now
two computers, may be a problem with using these with an account.
Have you tried a different browser, such as Firefox 3.x or Camino?
There may be other issues in the browser question. Several answers.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Trouble with CS5 off-line help install

    Hello,
I can't access help files after having recently purchased and installed several copies of CS5 Web Premium.
Here's the situation: military site with closed (non-internet) network needs CS5 to replace existing CS3 installation. Windows 32-bit. A stand-alone internet computer with cd-r drive is available, but I can't install anything on it. See the problem?
I've already read a number of threads on this subject and all the relevant KB articles that I could find (including 84215 and 83703). I downloaded the PDF manuals individually (much later I found http://blogs.adobe.com/premiereprotraining/2010/08/help-documents-for- creative-suite-5-pdf-and-html.html, which points to all of them in one place - that should be linked from the support site). Adobe phone support could not help beyond suggesting download of the PDFs.
My developers are used to being able to hit F1 and search help, specifically in Flash for ActionScript language reference. The external PDF manuals, while useful, are not an option for this purpose - just too clumsy.
As I understand it, the first time Adobe Community Help is run, it can optionally download all html help files for offline use. Since I can't connect the development computers to the internet, I need to download an archive of those files from elsewhere.
It seems like I need to either:
    a) Find a magical adobe.com page with an archive of the html help files that I can download
    -or-
    b) Go home and download (on my mac) the applicable portions of adobe.com and burn to CD
         (e.g. http://help.adobe.com/en_US/flash/cs/using/index.html)
    -then-
    c) Find the appropriate file location to install these files on my development computers
    d) Update any TOC or preference files so that the CS5 apps will know that the files are installed locally.
I could also just download the html files and put them on an internal web server, but this isn't preferred since then it wouldn't be connected to the CS5 apps, unless I can point them to an arbitrary web address for when my users hit F1 for help.
It seems like this would be a problem not just for military users but for any company that uses development computers not connected to the internet.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
    - Jim Grisham, United States Navy
    P.S.
Not sure if it's related, but in Flash Professional CS5 when attempting to request help from the menu I receive the following error:
    <Windows Internet Explorer>
    Cannot find 'file:///C:/Program%20Files/Common%20Files/Adobe/Help/en_US/Flash/CS5 /AS3LR/index.html
I think that's after telling Community Help to work offline. In Photoshop, I get no such error, just a message that I need to access the internet to download help.

Hi Jim:  you could try either approach (either hosting on your own intranet or copy the local help files to each machine). Here's some info that may help:
    1. the Help application relies on a small XML file called the Help Configuration file (.helpcfg). There is one for each product located in the user's Local Store.
    On Windows, look in C:\Documents and Settings\ * USER NAME* \ApplicationData\ chc.4875E02D9FB21EE389F73B8D1702B320485DF8CE.1\Local Store\HelpCfg\en_US
    On Mac, look in USER NAME (Home) > Library > Preferences > chc.4875E02D9FB21EE389F73B8D1702B320485DF8CE.1 > Local Store > HelpCfg> en_US
    2. The Help Config file tells the app two very important things:
Where to look for online content
Where to look for download content
There are a few other variables managed by the file but those two are the most important.
    3. Open the Help Config with a text editor and look for the following property: baseUrl="http://help.adobe.com/"
    4. Now look a little further down in the file and you should see a number of "package" elements.  Each package represents a distinct help book (i.e. "Using Flash CS 5"). The path variable is where the online HTML is located. For example, path="en_US/Flash/CS5/Using"
    5. Look further below and you will see a variable called, downloadContent. For example, downloadContent="client.Flash_CS5_Using_en-us.zip"
    6. If you put these three elements together (baseURL + path + downloadContent), you can parse the location for each downloadable help archive like so: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Flash/CS5/Using/client.Flash_CS5_Using_en-us.zip
So what does this mean for you? What you could do is manually download the help files and host them on your own intranet -- you can then alter the baseURLs in the Help Configs to point to your own server. This would require editing each and every HelpConfig file so this may not be scalable for a very large team.
Or, you could go home, fire up the Help app, download the Help content outside of your network and then copy the entire Help folder back into the Local Store for each user. The app will automatically default to local Help if it cannot detect an internet connection so your team should be able to access just fine as long as the files are in the Help folder of your Local Store. No additional edits to the config file required.
For your convenience, here are a few additional package URLs relevant for the Web Suite - these are the default packages that a user is prompted to download on first launch. There are many other packages defined in the help configs so there may be additional books relevant to your team.

  • Trouble with serial number for upgrade install

I am trying to upgrade from photoshop cs2 to cs4 with a purchased upgrade disc (on my imac). The installer requested my cs2 serial number and it is telling me the serial number does not match the product. I know for a fact this serial number does match as I have installed cs2 on all my macs with no problem. What do I do from here? The only other option it gives me is to run as a 30 day trial, and that is unacceptable.

You need to contact Adobe Support either by chat or via phone when you have serial number and activation issues.

Is Autodesk license manager unable to recognize computer with network setup?
    Thanks for any help.

Maya not being able to recognize the license dat file will not cause Maya to lock up or crash. Have you run a Maya crash log to confirm what is causing this? Since upgrading from Tiger to Leopard I also upgraded to Maya 2008 (don't know why Autodesk didn't call it 9.0..lol) from 8.5. I haven't experienced any system crashes on Leopard, even on the MacBook Pro (Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz, 3 GB RAM, ATI X1600). Note: I'm also using the AEBS in the SOHO and no issues with the license server.

I just wanted to add a thank you as well to this post. I was installing a fresh copy of server 2012 with exchange 2013 CU3 (fresh install) and was getting this exact error message. What i had done to cause this is not deleting the computer AD account
prior to setting up another server with the same host name. I deleted the AD account and setup the serve 2012 installation again using that "exchange" hostname i wanted to keep. and then ran the Exchange 2013 CU3 installer again and it worked. The problem
was i didnt remove my existing exchange server properly. Thanks for the answer in this post it steered me in the right direction.
