Trying to set up mail account

Hi,
I'm on an Imac Intel that runs Windows and OSX. On the Windows side my email is set up and functioning through Outlook. I'm the only Mac in a Windows network and since the IT guy is totally ignoring me, I have decided it's time for me to figure out how to set my email up in Mac Mail.
I've got that our email goes through Microsoft Exchange Server and I have the server name. I've got that it connects using LAN, I've got logon security network as Kerberos/NTLM Password Authentication.
So, I set up the email account in Mac Mail, using the same server name for both incoming and outgoing and basically trying to imitate how it is set up on the Windows side, where it is working.
The error I am getting says "The Exchange Server is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Incoming Mail Server field. If you continue, you may not be able to receive any email".
Then when I go to Mac Mail and click get mail here is what I get:"There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings or try again. The server error encountered was: The server refused to allow a connection on port 143.
Then when I try to send an email, the error is "Cannot send message using the server (the server name I set up).
So somewhere the settings aren't right but I don't know where to look. Like I said, I'm trying to imitate how it is set up in Windows but it's kind of vague. Like I can't find anywhere in Outlook or the Windows settings that has the actual outgoing server name. So I'm using the same one for incoming and outgoing. I'm sure it would take the IT guy 2 minutes but there seems to be a HUGE problem with responding to my requests.
Any help, any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks so much!
Mina

Hi Mina.
Mail doesn’t support Exchange accounts directly, but rather accesses them as IMAP accounts. According to Mail Help’s “Setting up your email accounts” article:
For Exchange to work with Mail, Exchange administrators need to configure the Exchange server for IMAP access.

When trying to update my Mail Account Mailbox Behaviours settings, after making the changes when I try to close the settings pane the following messages occur: Invalid Incoming Mail Server The “Incoming Mail Server” field cannot be empty. Hi all,
Mattreichenbach is probably on the right track here with a reset of settings.  I think I've determined the issue has to do with cached account information and inconsistencies for the account name.  This seems to crop up when I've changed my password and it hasn't propagated fully to all the servers, devices, certificates, etc.
Hopefully many here are on their way to restoration of service by now but it's clear that a lot of people are having the same issues.  Very frustrating and definitely something Apple needs to resolve:  incoming mail server field grayed out, incorrect autopopulation of different fields, other unanticipated behaviors.  If you're still having issues, though, here's what worked for me...
First, head to the iCloud preferences pane in System Configuration and choose "Sign Out".  When I did this it prompted me with a number of "are you sure" type questions about retaining information on my local machine.  I chose to delete/remove the info each time simply because it should all be restored by the cloud and I didn't want to risk a massive duplication of my data... I will say, I'm back up and running with no issues so I suspect you can make the same delete/remove choices...  But use your own judgment.  I don't want you to lose any data (ie.. please use care as you do this because I cannot bear the thought of causing anyone to experience the pain of data loss).
Once you've signed out of iCloud, restart your system.  When you get back in, head to the Mail, Contacts and Calendars section of your System Preferences and add your account back by choosing the brushed aluminum "iCloud" button.  When it asks for your account name, use your @iCloud.com email address.  I am all but certain my issue had started because one of my devices (iPhone or whatever) had been set up with an email alias specified instead of my @iCloud.com address.
Apple, if you're reading through any of these issues (there are TONS of users having this same problem).  Take note, that your icloud service somewhat frequently is not responding and yet tells the user that the password is wrong and this prompts people to be changing their passwords unnecessarily.  This has happened to me on numerous occasions.  Also, I noticed that last week's outage corresponded to a VERY similar outage exactly one year ago to the day.  Sounds like planned maintenance to me and I think you could do a better job notifying folks so we're not wasting HUGE amounts of time troubleshooting a problem that we have no hope of fixing.
Hope that helps some of you!

If you see the white WiFi bars in the upper left corner, that simply means that the iPad has detected a WiFi network, and that does not mean that you are connected to the Internet.
Can you open web sites with Safari?

    Hi soln,
You can change the incoming mail server for an email account by going to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Accounts > select the account to change > under INCOMING MAIL SERVER select Host Name > enter the correct name.

  • Trying to move my Mail account to my wifes old iPad 2

The good folks at my Apple Store today made sure that they transferred all her apps and files to the new iPad Mini i bought her. I'm now trying to set up myMacBookPro  Mail accounts on her old iPad 2 but without success. I started trying with my iMac mail account and received a message that the account name is already in use. I've two other Gmail accounts to transfer over as well.
My plan has been to just use the iPad2 for my net use and my MBP for my photo work. If anyone has any ideas on how to do this I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks!

Export makes a mailbox package whihc I thinkis what's need to properly restore on import.
See below for location of export.
For restoring from Time machine here's is the help text for doing so. (I've only done this on individual messages)
I also think if you copy everything in ~/Library/Mail you may be all-right.

"Actually, it's always been marketed as interaction with Exchange 2007 only."
No, that's not correct. Not even a little bit. It was MARKETED as providing Exchange support. The fine print said it was only with 2007. One of the first truly underhanded things I've seen Apple do.

If the word "Off" is sort of cloudy and the settings are greyed out - that means you do not have restrictions enabled - but just in case - do you use a passcode to lock the iPad?
Exactly what message are you getting and where are you getting the message - what does the "email icon" mean?

    Hello PJmanco,
Sorry you are having trouble signing up for an ePrint account. I would recommend trying a different browser (i.e. Chrome, Firefox, Safari) or a mobile browser (iOS, Android, etc.) to see if that helps.
If I have helped in any way, just click the Kudos star on the left. Also, if your issue has been resolved, don't forget to select Accept as Solution

I use Windows 7.  When I tried to set up an account I was told I already had one.  So I asked forgotten password and then was told no password was associated with the same email address.  Sorry that I have to go through this. Might be easier to return HP

Trying to set up mail....  will receive but not send.  Already called internet provider.  They said ask Apple.

    Hi ...
Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2), Lion.
From the Lion Help viewer ...
    If you can’t send messages
If the Send button is dimmed or you see an alert that your message can’t be sent using the outgoing mail server, you might not be able to send messages. Here are some things you can try:
Make sure the outgoing mail server is specified correctly, as directed by your email service provider.Verify your outgoing mail server
If you try to send a message and a dialog appears saying you need permission, an administrator has limited the email addresses you can correspond with. Click the Ask Permission button.Request permission to send messages
Choose Window > Connection Doctor, and follow any instructions displayed in the Details column. Check whether there is a problem with your outgoing mail server or a firewall, if applicable, or if there was a login failure. If the Connection Doctor indicates a firewall problem:Verify there is no firewall software blocking email traffic on port 25, 465, or 587.Check whether you’re affected by another firewall. This could be either software installed separately from Mac OS X or built into an Internet sharing router, or software administered by your Internet service provider. Contact the appropriate person to find out whether a firewall exists.
You may be able to send messages from only a certain location. For example, if you send messages from school, you may not be allowed to send messages using the school’s outgoing mail server when you’re at home. Or, the email service provider may allow you to send messages but with stricter settings (such as requiring a name and password). Get the information you need from your provider and then change the outgoing mail server settings in Mail preferences.

  • Mail does not respond when trying to set up new account

I'm trying to set up my brand new @me.com email account on my brand new Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion 10.8.1. I open Mail and it prompts me to write my name, email adress and password, which I do. Then, without fail, it says 'Searching for mail servers from the specified email address...' for a few seconds before freezing, with that message still displayed. I have to force quit Mail, which is said to be 'not responding'. Anyone know how to fix this?
