Turn a broad stroke into a filled shape?

Hi there,
I've made some lines/paths using a broad 20pt stroke which tapers to a point (using variable width profile).
is it possible to turn these paths into filled shapes so the paths would become the outer edges of the current stroke?
thanks for any help!
using CC
Steve

Yes, you can convert a stroke to a filled shape.
You can use either object>expand appearence then ungroup
or
You can use object>path>outline stroke

  • Is there a way to turn a text character into an image?

Is it possible to turn a text character into an image/shape...using Pages or any other iLife or iWorks app?
Reason being - I want to use a certain font and a character in it, but that particular font is not being recognized/shown properly by another computer. I want to make sure the text character shows up as I intend, and I figure the way to do that is by turning the text character into an image/shape (like a jpeg maybe? or a tiff or gif? I don't know too much about the difference between these last two). Then I can paste that image onto any background and have it still look like text laying on top of the background.
Hope that makes sense, and many thanks in advance for any insights!

Although it saves the text character as an image, it also saves the background (the white of the page) as part of that image. So when the character is pasted into a document whose background is anything other than white, it doesn't look like a simple text character anymore. It looks like a white box with a text character in it. You know what I mean?
I'm thinking I might need to use whole 'nother graphics program to do this whole deal...what do you think?
Rather than using Preview, create the new image from the clipboard in GraphicConverter & use the transparency wand to make the background transparent. Then use ⌘ E to select just the image & save, choosing to save just the selection.

  • Assigning stroke attribute from one shape to fill attribute of another shape using eyedropper tool?

Unalbe to use eyedropper tool to pick up stroke attribute from one shape to use in fill of another shape. I shift click with my eyedropper tool on stroke but does not transfer that color to my fill color of other shape. Fill color shows correctly in tools panel but not in shape or control panel.

I have through trial and error discovered as a fifth step to JamArtz instructions, if I go to the color panel flyout menu and click on CMYK, my effect will take effect: I know this to be a band aide solution not a fix. Can’t see anything in my preferences to cause the issue.
1.Select the destination object (the one for which you want to change the fill).
    2. Make the fill swatch in the Color Panel active (important step).
    3. Select the eyedropper.
    4. Shift-click on the stroke of the source object (the one whose stroke you want to apply to the fill of the destination object).
    5. From the Color Panel fly out menu, click on CMYK (which is already toggled on) the change will take effect.

  • How to draw filled shapes quickly (especially from multiple strokes)?

Greetings. I'm making a comic for the 1st time and am using Inkscape. My problem is, on paper I'm way, way faster than with a vector drawing program (even when using a Wacom tablet) mainly because I find it difficult to draw shapes with 1 stroke and instead have to spend a lot of time joining multiple strokes into solid shapes.
Is there some features or plugins in Adobe Illustrator that can make this much faster?  Or are there other drawing methods that would be much faster ?
I've attached examples of what I want to be done automatically.
The 1st case shouldn't be hard. The 2nd case of dealing with emergent shapes seems to be very difficult for a computer.  I also have plenty of programming knowlege, so I would be glad to make a plugin to do this if someone can point me to the right idea.

Which version of Illustrator are you using?
In current versions there is Live Paint and the Shape Builder tool.

  • Need info about making brush strokes into  objects

I have been using a Wacom graphics tablet and Freehand to create my illustrations for many years (since Freehand v.2). Since Freehand's days are obviously numbered, I have finally decided to make the switch. So far, it hasn't been that difficult, but I seem to get stuck on one problem, and for me, it is a pretty big one.
In Freehand, I select the "variable stroke" tool in order to make a variable width line. It actually doesn't make a stroke, though. It makes a shape. I can then select the points anywhere on the edge of the shape and make adjustments.
In Illustrator, I do basically the same thing. I make a stroke, and the more pressure I put on the tablet the thicker the line gets. So far, so good. But, I can't do any adjustments to the thickness, make the ends of the line taper to a point, etc. So in order to make that stroke into a shape (with points along the outside edge) that I can adjust, I have to select the stroke, go to Object, then Expand Appearance for each stroke I make. This is a tremendous timewaster for me.
My question: Is there any way to make the "Expand Appearance" function stay on so that every stroke I make is automatically converted to a shape? Or, is there another function in Illustrator CS1 that I can select that will make all of my strokes shapes as I draw them?
If it will help, you can look at some of my work to see how I use the Variable Stroke tool and how essential it is to my style of illustration at: http://www.norrishallstudio.com

    Norris,
Illustrator 7 and earlier drew all brush strokes as filled shapes. (It only had calligraphic brushes.) The live centerline arrived in AI 8, along with the other brush types.
While Illustrator does not have any "auto Expand" option, and one could theoretically be added, I wonder if it might not instead be preferable to give direct user interface control over the data collected by the tablet.
For example, take the following brush stroke:
If expanded, it would look like this:
But even though the individual anchor points of the fill shape would then be editable, it would still not be convenient to do most kinds of editing. The centerline kind of edits would become very difficult. But even doing things that preserve the centerline, such as thickening the stroke or adjusting the apparent pen tilt, you would have to move anchor points on both sides, possibly adding some, adjusting handle lengths, etc.
What if there was an option, possibly available via a button on the Control Palette when a brush stroke was selected, to show control handles for the pressure and other tablet data, something like this:
The controls would have sensitive regions that activated different kinds of variation, similar to how the Bounding Box transform controls do. Possibly it would be workable to control them via the Direct Select tool, but if that turned out to interfere too much with other Direct Select tool operations (such as adjusting the direction handles of the centerline, which would be likely to often be near the pressure controls), then there could be a dedicated tool or mode for adjusting them.
There are up to 5 kinds of tablet data that are collected at each sample point: pressure, tilt, bearing, rotation, and stylus barrel pressure. But only at most four can have meaning for any brush stroke, since there are at most four brush options that can be assigned tablet data to vary by. (For calligraphic brushes, the options are angle, roundness and diameter. For scatter brushes, they are size, spacing, scatter and rotation.)
If the tablet data controls had the I-beam shape shown above, there are four easily distinguishable aspects of the control: its length, its angle relative to the centerline, the width of the crossbars, and the tilt of the crossbars relative to the I-beam vertical.
(One could imagine assigning more variation, such as controlling the two crossbars independently, or moving the I-beam offcenter, but the more variables one allows, the trickier it gets to manipulate.) One could say that the length controlled whichever tablet data point was attached to the diameter or size of the brush, the I-beam angle controlled whichever tablet data point was attached to the brush angle or rotation, the crossbar width controlled whichever tablet data point was attached to the brush spacing or roundness, and the crossbar tilt controlled whichever tablet data point was attached to the scatter distance of a scatter brush. (One could also imagine calligraphic brushes having a symmetry setting, that controlled whether the brush shape was elliptical or squashed like a pear, and attach that to the crossbar tilt.)
Since there would be way too much visual clutter to show every sample point, I think it should be sufficient to show them at anchor points, and possibly at max and min values for the variable data. If the user wanted to gain control at a position where there was no marker displayed, they could always add an anchor point.
Although I am calling it "tablet data", a path drawn with a mouse or with one of the shape tools could still have the controls. It would start initally with all "average" values since no data was collected, and tablet data would be artificially constructed by moving the controls and then saved.
If controls like that were available for live brush strokes, would you still prefer to auto-expand your brush strokes on mouse up instead of leaving them live?
(For all I know, there may be some third-party plugin that already provides some such controls. The tablet data can be accessed and modified through the AITabletData suite in the public SDK.)

  • Combining Line Segments into a single shape

I drew one half of a shape by drawing multiple line segments using the arc tool. Think of the shape as sort of a C. Once I had the shape the way I wanted it, I copied and reflected it to give me the other half, so now it looks sort of like an O. However, when I go to fill the shape, I get all sort of weird fills, like it is trying to close each of the individual arcs that I drew.
I have spent over an hour going through Illustrators help and searching the internet, but I can't figure out how to join all these line segments into a single shape that I can then apply a fill to. I'm sure this is easy, but I'm frustrated.
    Thanks,
    Ken

Thanks Kurt. That did it. My gosh, I would never have thought of looking for something like that. I upgrade to CS3 sometime ago, but hadn't used illustrator much since I upgraded.
    Thanks for the help.

  • How to turn a pdf file into excel document and keep original format

I Have an excel bid form that i use all the time ,then i convert it into a PDF  And once in a while i need to add something to it  I paid for acrobat but when i try to turn the PDF back into an excel document the format is changed , the columns are in the wrong places And it does not look at all like the original excell form is there any thing i can do to  fix this If not this will be useless to me  any help appreciated

A PDF does not contain any spreadsheet, word processing or page layout file format information.
    No "format", columns, rows, etc.
"When you create a PDF, you’re painting a picture. Your paintbrush is the is the result of a combination of the software used to create the source document and the software you’ve chosen to convert your source document into the universal electronic document format we all know as PDF.
Like the painter’s brushstrokes, each character, each line and each image is fundamentally independent, but they can interact with each other to produce particular visual effects. On the PDF page, objects are connected by a coordinate system and not a lot else. There’s no logical, semantic connection between the letters comprising a word; characters simply happen at a series of locations on the rendered page.
As originally designed, PDF is fundamentally a system for painting objects onto a page, plus a whole lot of other features we aren’t talking about right now! There’s no innate concept of words, sentences, paragraphs, columns, headings, images, tables, lists, footnotes – any of the semantic structures that distinguish a “document” from a meaningless heap of letters, shapes and colors. PDF is fundamentally about how the document appears on the page, not how it looks when abstracted from the page."

  • Turning my PDF file into a Template

Hey guys, just wondering how to turn my PDF file into a template, the PDF is a fillable form, with fields and scripts, is it possible to turn this into a template so when i click on it, it opens up a copy of the original file so we can fill it out and save it somewhere else and keep the original file where it was and un-filled (template)?
If i have to do this on LiveCycle or another program, let me know.
    Thank you.

Thanks for replying, but i need my Technicians to be able to fill out the form, sign it, and save it, and still have the original document sitting there for next time we need to fill it out. The document needs to stay PDF.

  • Can't change the weight of my strokes, color or fill...

I use artioscad wich has a plug-in for illustrator. When I'm working with illustrator i can't change the weight of my strokes, color or fill, in fact i can't do anything, everything is locked. I have tried to unlock the draw but with n o sucessm can anyone help me?? I have to make the illustrations for the boxes I draw and using *.eps file is not my solution.

    Hi Megan,
    Thanks for the replay.
I have tried many thinks, and tried what you wrote, but nothing. I'm new in this artioscad-illustrator, so probably I'm making something wrong. I just draw in artios and open directly in illustrator using esko plug-in.
I tried again what to told me to trie but with no luck.
I'll pass you a step-by-step what I made after oppening in illustrator:
I'll make my steps for you to undersatnd whats hapening.. because I have tried looking the appearance palette.. and its ok.
First i draw in artios, its a package software design which has a plug-in for illustrator (to open directly artios drawings in illustrator)
Then in illustrator i open it directly, the aspect is like this:
I unlock the chain of the layers and in the appearence palette apears just plug-in object.
I can select an individual path but can't change it. If I make a offset path with 0mm, I can change that path weight but not the original. But if i try to move the offset path or the original path it gives me an error "Can't move the objects. The command was canceled"
I have tried so many things that, realy, I can't remember all. I
have a menu that has more options, but none of them unlock the paths. Every time try to drag an anchor it goes right back to the original position.
The goal is to make something like the next image:
Today I dupplicated my layer and then made a offset 0, now I can change the weight, color and fill my shape. Probably I will find more problens in the way. This was the only solution that worked with me!

  • Fill shape with pen tool

    Hi there,
this might be a very simple question, but couldn't figure it out ..
I made a Title in Premiere and I want to draw a shape with the pen tool.
However this only results into a shape with line instead of it being filled.
So my question: how to draw a filled shape in Premiere Pro with the pen tool?
    Thanks in advance

Set Graphic Type to Filled Bezier, that will fill the shape.

  • CAN I TURN MY MACBOOK PRO INTO A MONITOR?

Help I want to turn my Macbook Pro into a monitor for my Playstation 2 so that way I can record on my screen using quicktime. please help I used a vga adapter from apple a AV to vga converter, and is their any way for me to use an iphone on a mac to play ios games while recording?

I don't think you can without some sort of capture card (very expensive, and because most MacBook Pros don't have a card, you need to use the FW800).  MBP's Thunderbolt port only sends video signals out, you can't attach an HDMI to Mini DisplayPort cable from your camera to the MBP and expect to show video.
You could try a utility like Sofortbild.

  • I am trying to transfer my photos from old mac to new mac.  I copied the iPhoto library to an external hard drive, then imported it to the new iPhoto.  It turned my 2000 photos into 12,000!!  What happened?

And how do I turn off FACES?

I copied the iPhoto library to an external hard drive, then imported it to the new iPhoto.  It turned my 2000 photos into 12,000!!
According to you youo did not do what I instructed - you said you imported the old library into th enew library which can easily take a 2000 photo library and turn it into 12,000 including two ro three versions of each photo pus all the face thumbnails
The correct procedure has NO importing involved
drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac
    That is it

    is JQ iweb compatible?
jQuery is a very popular JavaScript library with which you can bring interactivity into web pages.  I know almost nothing about iWeb except that it is consumer level software for non-coders.  That said, if you can access the source code (HTML and CSS), you should be able to use jQuery plug-ins in your web pages.
jQuery Cycle Plug-in (click on examples, view source in browser to see the code).

  • How can i turn a photoshop file into a website with knowing code? can i upload Muse or DreamWeaver?

How can i turn a photoshop file into a website with knowing code? can i upload Muse or DreamWeaver?
I created a few images (pages for a site) on photoshop and want to turn them into HTML code for a website- Can i Just upload the file into one of these programs and make a file with the correct code imediatly?
I was reading about using EDGE Reform but i did not understand if i can create the code with it, in the end it says it still needs to be sent to website developer after?

You need to look at Dreamweaver as a code editor. You need to learn to create good, clean HTML code with style sheets to make websites with Dreamweaver.
There are tutorials that will take you from a layered .PSD file to HTML. Here's a good one:
    http://net.tutsplus.com/tutorials/site-builds/from-psd-to-html-building-a-set-of-website-d esigns-step-by-step/
Adobe's Muse is a semi-WYSIWYG website layout creator for small websites (1-5 pages). But there is no way you can go from a .PDS file to Muse, you have to start the site in Muse.
I have seen a few Muse sites and they're OK, but there is some code that Muse creates that is kind of odd. If you want a good, clean website that will work for you or your business, Dreamweaver is the best choice. Alternatively, you could hire a pro.
