UCS B-Series / FC 6120 / MDS 9513: Setting up FI and B-Series in UCSM

We are receiving FC SAN connections from an MDS 9513 we do not own, within the same physical building. We have been given a range of WWNN and WWPN to create pools in UCSM.
I am not a storage manager, nor much of a systems manager, but I know there are more details to set up within UCSM in order to connect a blade to this SAN. I do not know the details within UCSM that have to be specified, order of operations to perform these configurations. Is there a document within Cisco Support or elsewhare to direct me through the process?

Hi Steven,
I believe you have already configured the FC uplink ports on the Fabric Interconnect (FI) and done the physical cabling to your MDS? If not, you need to do that first
++ Create the VSANs as required in the VSAN Tab in UCSM, under SAN  Cloud. Make sure that these VSAN's are defined in the MDS.
Refer to
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/sw/gui/config/guide/2.0/b_UCSM_GUI_Configuration_Guide_2_0_chapter_010110.html
++ Now You need to decide which ports on the FI you will use for the FC uplink and configure it as FC uplink ports from the UCSM. Make  sure that the FC uplink ports are in same VSAN as the ports in MDS which  connects to FI.
Refer to
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/sw/gui/config/guide/2.0/b_UCSM_GUI_Configuration_Guide_2_0_chapter_0101.html
Check for the FC Uplink ports to come online. This is important. If this is done then you can go to next steps.
Next thing is that create the WWNN Pool and WWPN Pool under the SAN tab. Refer to
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/sw/gui/config/guide/2.0/b_UCSM_GUI_Configuration_Guide_2_0_chapter_011000.html
Now you are all set. Next thing is when creating the service profile, under storage tab, create vHBA's as required, use the WWPN pool and WWNN pool that you created. Again make sure that you select the right VSAN for the vHBA's.  Provide these WWPN details to storage admin and request for the LUN's that you need to be allocated and rest will be handled from the storage admin.
If you need more details you can always go to
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps10281/products_installation_and_configuration_guides_list.html and select the configuration guide, either CLI or GUI according to the UCS version you are running.
Hope this helps.

  • Best Design practices of SAN with the MDS 9513,MDS 9509 and Brocade 8510

    Hi
Am searching best design to implement CISCO MDS 9513,9509, Brocade 8510,Storage and UCS all clubbed in the topology. And please suggest me any tool to compare MDS and Brocade 8510 performance.

    Boomi,
Both MDS and Brocade will serve basic features of Storage networking. Both can be mix and match to achieve redundancy, which you already have. However, if you are looking for any tool or perfmon then there isn't much to compare. You can use IOmeter or Akkori. I see that you have enterprise level hardware in your setup. Not sure what other line cards you have installed and what application are running through, and if you have remote sites (SAN islands) then the real difference of features and best practices can be discussed. For example, IVR, FCIP, ISCSI, FCoE, etc.
    Thanks,

  • MDS 9513 in a Telco Rack?

We recently purchased 2 - MDS 9513 SAN switches.  The only place to install them in our data center is in 2 Telco racks.  I realize this is unsupported and we are on our own in terms of how to physically install this.  We have placed one on a shelf and are looking for a way to secure or fasten the system to the rack somehow.  The mounting ears can't be used because the unit is too deep to be flush mounted.
Has anyone out there been forced to use a Telco rack?  If so, do you have any ideas on how to fasten to the rack?
    Thanks

    Jose,
can't you move the ears back?  I just looked at our 9513's and there are what appear to be two more sets of holes on the sides for the ears. This is a picture of one or our 9509's in a telco rack and it came with the big plates that bolt to the telco rack that the switch sits on for this kind of mounting.  I believe the 9513 (and 9509) chasiss are the same as the big Catalyst switches and we have those telco rack mounted all over the place so I bet you could get some of these mounting plates from Cisco (or your reseller.)

  • SSRS Bar Chart grouping date series into Months, setting scaler start and end ranges

I've been trying to solve this issue for a few days now without writing a sql script to create a "blank" for all of missing data points so that I get a bar for each month.  I have date series (by day) data points grouped by two items
that creates a set of bar charts.  EG:  one chart per product in the tablix detail grouped to site level.
My issue is I would like the start and end of the charts to be the same for all charts and the only way I get it to work is with a chart that continues to show each date on the chart.
    EG:
I have the graph start and end points set and scaling by month as I would like but each bar is a day instead of aggregating to a month level.   My issue I hope to find a workaround for is if I go to Category Groups and define the grouping
to group with a year and month function the series is no longer treated as date data and I cannot control scaling.  It works fine if all months have activity, but I can't figure out how to always have all charts start at "May 2012" in this example.
The only start and end point that I've been able to get to work once doing this are integer based, eg normal start would be 1 for each graph, but 1 doesn't equate to the same month from chart to chart.
I hope SSRS can provide the solution.  I do know I can write a query that creates a ZERO value for each month/product/site but I don't want to leave the client with a query like that to support.

    Hi cybertosis,
If I understand correctly, you want to display all month category label in the X-Axis. You have configure the Scalar Axis, however, it cannot display the requirement format.
In your case, if we want the specific data format, we can configure Number property to set the corresponding Category data format. Please refer to the following steps:
Right click the X-Axis, select Horizontal Axis Properties.
Click Number in the left pane. Click Date option in the Category dialog box.
    Then, select Jan 2000 option.
Please refer to the following screenshot below:
If there are any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.

  • 3D Programming and 7000 Series set top box

I want to watch ESPN 3D but the screens are split on my Panasonic 3D Plasma screen.  It is part of the Ultimate HD package but I have not been able to see it.  The technicians at Verizon give me a different story each time I talk to them.  One of the techs told me I need a 7000 series box to view 3D content.  Can anyone tell me if this is true or give me suggestions to make this work?  I also wonder if I need to connect the HDMI cable from the set top box directly to the tv via a 1.4 HDMI cable without going through my "non 3D capable" receiver or if a 1.3 HDMI cable will work like it does with my Playstation.  Thanks.
    Kurt

I had the same problems. This is what you need to do if you haven't tried it yet. EPSN 3D broadcasts in 720P, so you have to go to settings and change your video settings to 720P, my guess is you probably have it set to 1080i. After setting it to 720p, then set your TV 3D setting to top and bottom and it should merge the picture. I would set the setting back to 1080i when you are done with watching the channel, the movies on demand I believe are 1080i and 3D setting side by side. Hope that helps.

  • What if two service modules fail on a MDS 9513?

    Hello,
We recently had a service module failure on one of our core MDS 9513 directors.
It is fixed now but I was wondering what would happen if the second service module had failed as well a bit later...
Will the director still function? All line cards and crossbars are still functionning. But there will be no management possible etc...
    Will the traffic continue?
    Kind regards,
    Ivy

    Ivy
The director would then fail completely.
Though I don't know anyone that unlucky

  • Do we have an procedure to gracefully shut down the MDS-9513?

    Hello All
Do we have an procedure to gracefully shut down the MDS-9513?
    Please advise
    Thanks
    Chetan

    Hi Chetan,
There is no separate command required on MDS switches for a graceful
    shutdown of the MDS switches.
Disengage the power or down the power source feeding the MDS to
    shutdown the switch.
The MDS has enough RAM memory and does not require any fschk when it
will power back UP unlike other vendor switches. The MDS is architected
    that way.
As a prudence you can take these measures:
    1) Halt I/O or gracefully shutdown the attached servers and hosts
    2) After your servers have been halted, follow the shutdown procedures
    for all attached storage devices
    3) Other tips to keep in mind if you were running HP-UX or AIX onyour
servers. In this case, you would want to make sure that you have turned
    on static
domains and persistent FCIDs prior to powering these servers down (this
would insure that hosts and associated storage come back up with the
    same domains and FCIDs.
    4) Save your switch configuration by doing "copy run start" as well as
save your configuration externally to a FTP/TFTP server in case you need
    to restore that back.
After all devices have been shutdown/quiesced, it is okay to simply
    power off the MDS switches.
    Best regards,
    Jim

  • Is it possible to downgrade a MDS-9513 crossbar module?

IHAC that purchased a Generation 3 24-Port 8Gbps Module for two (2) of their MDS-9513 at Site A. The customer just discovered that they have a Generation 1 crossbar module [DS-13SLT-FAB1]. The customer has two (2) additional MDS-9513 at Site B that has a Generation 2 module [DS-13SLT-FAB2]. We want to swap crossbar modules from Site B to Site A, vice-versa.
Is it possible to downgrade a crossbar module?

No. You can't install earler versions of the OS than that with which (any) Mac was originally delivered.

  • CIMC vs IPMI on both B and C series UCS

    Hi guys,
any chance somebody can explain difference between CIMC and IPMI. Some pages on CCO are stating that CIMC is used on C series while some other pages are mentioning it when talking about blades too. Can I open web browser and type in IP address that will show me CIMC running on B200M2? Does it look similar as CIMC on C series?
I've found CLI command on UCS Manager that allows to turn off IPMI and now I'm even more confused because some docs on CCO are saying CIMC is just an old name for BMC and I know that BMC is embedded CPU that takes care about IPMI feature...
    Regards,
    Tenaro

So the CIMC has had many names.
IBMC = BMC = CIMC. So if you see either IBMC or BMC in any documentation you can safely replace that with CIMC. Also please bring that to our attention if you still see either IBMC or BMC in our documentation.
So the CIMC chip is the same on the B and the C series. The interface is a little different but they both provide the same functionality. On a standalone C series the CIMC provides a lot more information because there is no UCSM to show inventory, modify the BIOS and allow you do other things.
You can download the KVM standalone app that will allow you to go straight to the KVM for a B-series but it will look different then the interface for the standalone C-series. If a C-series is integrated with UCSM it gets the B-series interface.
The CIMC allows for IPMI access. So on a C-series if you don't have the CIMC configured you can't run IPMI to the server. CIMC is always active for B-series but IPMI is selectable via the Service Profile.
    Hope that answers the questions

  • UCS Manager and C Series questions

My reading of the documentation is that in order to use the UCS Manager with a standalone C series server (C200, C210 or C250, anyway) is that in addition to UCSM 1.4 and a pair of 6108 fabric interconnects you also need a pair of 2248 fabric extenders.
First, is Cisco planning to add support for additional fabric extenders? I have a customer with a pair of 2232's who is looking at adding some standalone C series servers to be managed along with an existing B series chassis.
Second, I'd read on this forum that the Palo card may not be supported on M1 servers. Is it safe to assume that the Palo card is supported on M2 servers?
    Thanks!

    Michael,
Correct, for the current revision of UCSM (1.4) you require two 2248's for Management traffic (CIMC) while your two 10G connection for the dataplane will connect direclty to each Fabric Interconnect.  Future planning is going to have a single I/O path and remove the need for the additional 2248's.  Future support for 2232 (10G FEX) will also be added to increase port density on the Interconnects.
Palo may "work" with M1 servers, but is only "supported" on M2.

    Robert

  • Discovery of MDS IBM FC Bladecenter by Cisco MDS 9513

    Hi all,
Supose I have "9513", connected to it several "Bladecenters" and several "9513" switches.
My wish is to discover the attached switches with CLI commands.
The additional 9513 I can recognize with "show topology" that gives me the attached (trunk, port-channel) switches IP.
How can discover the blades? I would like to somehow to get their IPs.
    Best regards,
    Igor.

    Another question:
The output of "show fcs database" at MDS 9513 I get:
FCS Local Database in VSAN: 1
         Switch WWN               : XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
         Switch Domain Id         : 0x05(5)
         Switch Mgmt-Addresses    : snmp://10.235.159.60/eth-ip
                                    http://10.235.159.60/eth-ip
         Fabric-Name              : YY:YY:YY:YY:YY:YY:YY:YY
How can I get the "Fabric-Name" from BLADE switches?
    Regards,
    Igor.

  • Trying to watch a movie and tv series which we rented but have a message 'not available on us store' - is this a setting problem? Very frustrated with new Apple TV after having it only 3 weeks!

Please help - I need advice on how to watch a movie and TV series we rented

Thank you. Have given it a try - it sort of works, although doesn't turn up very loud!

  • 500GB DVR wouldn't stop resetting, now all recordings and scheduled series gone

I saw similar threads on this topic, but not sure its the same or not. On 1/11, we were watching a recorded show and it started blinking out a few times, then reset itself. It came back on and then did it again a bit later. We rebooted by unplugging it for a few seconds and it came back.
Then last night (1/12), we were watching a different recording, and the DVR reset itself. When it finished, it reset again. It continually did this around 5 times and then we unplugged it and plugged it back in. It still would just reset and reset. Unplugged again for longer. Repeat. Finally got it to stop resetting by leaving it unplugged while I ate dinner. Got it back to the place in the show we were watching, but the family had dispersed, so I turned it off. Later that night, I was watching from another STB (we have Home Media set up), and I saw the DVR said No recordings. Uh oh. I went to the DVR and turned it on and it showed No recordings and no series scheduled. I tried rebooting again a couple times and no luck. (It wasn't resetting anymore though!)
So I called customer support. I had to get to Tier III before they would agree to send me a new box. Neither knows what happened. They tried resetting remotely and re-initializing and still No recordings. They say they are sending me out a new box.
I'm not sure if we got a guide update or not. I don't remember seeing the "For HD press C", but I might have just missed it. Same with the captions options having all the options from the old system menu.
The tech guy said to call billing after we receive the new DVR to see about compensation. If it was an update that caused this and not just a hard drive issue, I am super-**bleep**. In any case, I'm also **bleep** that they don't try to physically get the recordings back. No one wants to get data off a hard drive... Fortunately I had already watched the latest Downton Abbey!

Though I don't know the size on my DVR, what you describe has been happening to me for three days now, too. Was annoying at first; now it's getting horrible, like every hour or two this happens.
A new box is coming in the mail, but still, this is looking like a more common issue than it ought to be. I'm still in my 30 day "cancel" window for FiOS TV, and I'm about ready to switch right back at this stage.

  • All of a sudden my iDVD player doesn't want to burn 2-part movies or series. It says there is an error and says I have a blank dvd in the drive. What to do?

My idvd has stopped burning when it involves a 2-part movie or series. It starts alright but then stops and gives and error, not a code just says there was an error and the little box comes up that says I inserted a blank dvd and asks what I want to do. I need help with this and would really appreciate someone's experience.

Then I guess that the free space on Your Start-Up (Mac OS) Hard Disk is less than 5Gb or worse - I never go under 25Gb when doing a DVD.
    To make a DiskImage
    • Start a new iDVD project (as there is an iDVD bug luring in old projects (closed one time))
    • Arrange all material: Movies, SlideShows and extras etc
    • Go up to File Menu - and down to Save as a DiskImage
(You need a minimum of 25Gb to let this work OK)
    • Then close iDVD
    • Double click on the .img file You just created on DeskTop
    • Start DVD-player tool (If it doesn't jump up in action by it self)
    • See that all plays as You want it to do
    • Close DVD-Player tool
    • Open Disk Util tool (Application folder / Tool folder)
    • Now to the left - select the .img file
    • Go up and click on BURN
    • When asked to do so - Insert a new DVD
    • NOW SELECT TO SET DOWN BURN SPEED TO x4 or x1 (as this gives a significantly better result)
    I Use
    • Verbatim
    • DVD-R
And get a very good result
OK mishmumken - I never figured out WHY I'm such a BLAB ! - You concentrated this to 100% Valu - GREAT
