UK English spelling

Pages(in iWork 09) keeps marking any UK English spellings, that do not coincide with american english, as mis-spellings. Iv'e check preferences in Pages and my system preferences, and everything seems to be fine. This constant annoyance is driving me back towards MS Word!

On old documents, including page layouts ones: open, select all - unlock any locked text boxes, apply British English, re-lock the text boxes, save and close. Open again to make sure!
I am thankful for this thread because I didn't know about the British English option, or even the Australian and Canadian versions of English! I've been "learning" to the US dictionary for over four years because you have to edit the default list.
I think this an appropriate thread post about a feature that I discovered when I reading about spelling in The iWorks Missing Manual. You may be writing in English (say) and wish to add a word or a whole block of a foreign language. You select the block or the word, go to the Inspector > Text > More and change to the language and it spell checks for that selection. And, apart from the spelling, it saves learning the key strokes for accents on words like francais (cedilla c) or fuhrer (umlaut).

  • Correct spanish and english spelling

    The Iphone is set on Spanish, so when I write it correct the text only with a spanish dictionary. it is posible also to put together and english dictionary?

    Have you gone to system prefs/language & text/text/spelling and checked the right boxes for what you want? (go to "setup" at the bottom of the list).

  • How can I get correct English spelling in Lightroom 3 (UK/Canada)

    I tried to download the software from the UK site and the Canadian one but it kept sending me to the US site.  All I want is the 'u' in colour!  Is there proper spelling in another version out there and if so, how can I get it instead?
    A 'u'!  My kingdom for a 'u'!

    FYI: For anyone else trying the translation file solution.
    As brilliantly suggested by Dorin above, I modified a number of 'en' translation files in the Lightroom 3 installation.  I didn't have the 'en' directory under the 'Resources' directory but found that if I created this directory and put another translation file in it, Lightroom picked it up when loading.
    All I ended up having to do was to add the specific lines I wanted modified.  For anyone interested, here are the contents of that file so far.  There may be minor mistakes as nothing translates from another language perfectly.

  • SOLVED - English thesaurus doesn't work in OpenOffice Writer 3.2.1

    I'm using OpenOffice Writer v.3.2.1 in current Arch Linux.  To enable spell and grammar checking and for a thesaurus, it appears one has to install the appropriate extension(s).  I did that by going to Tools -> Extension Manager, selecting  Add, navigating to /usr/lib/openoffice/share/extension/install, picking the dictionary "dict-en.oxt" (file dated 6/1/10) and clicking Open.  That installed the "English spelling and hyphenation dictionaries and thesaurus 2010.03.16".  Spell-checking and hyphenation do indeed work and are supported through the Hunspell SpellChecker and Libhyphen Hyphenator, resp.
    However, with this extension, the thesaurus doesn't work.  In Tools>Language, the entry "Thesaurus" is greyed out and CTRL+F7 doesn't work.  In Tools>Options>Language Settings>Writing Aids, under "Available language modules" no thesaurus or grammar modules are listed.  When I press the "Edit" button in that dialog box, the categories Grammar and Thesaurus are there but no specific modules are listed for them.  No separate English thesaurus appears to be available at http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/en/dictionary .
    How can I get a decent thesaurus to work from within OOo Writer?
    EDIT: To be able to use the thesaurus requires installation of libmythes. Thanks to Robert Tucker for pointing out the fix.

    Yes, the dkms versions work fine with the new kernel

  • SWEDISH Language Spelling

    I need Swedish and English spelling
    I am a new from PC to Mac user Experienced with Microsoft word and excel. Hope to only use IWORK now
    br/Dufomac

    Hi Dufomac,
    Welcome to the world of Mac!
    Pages (and other iWork applications) has their dictionary ties to your Mac's international settings. Go to *System Preferences > International* and check (the list on the left) if you have Svenska installed in your system. (If you don't, you can click on *Edit List...* to add Svenska to the list.) If you prefer, you can drag it to the topmost of the list, making it the 'default' first-choice language for your Mac.
    Once you set the language, the language in Pages will be automatically set to Svenska the next time you start Pages. However, if it doesn't, you can set the document's language by going to the *Text Inspector > More*, and select Svenska from the Language drop-down menu.

  • Adding British English to 10.6.8

    hi,
    I'm fed up with the American English spelling default in Pages and have tried to add British English  to my list of languages in system prefs> language & spelling > language> edit list. Though British English is there I can't select it, nor any of the others for that matter. I can't deselect any of the checked languages either.
    I've looked on the original install seedy but can't see any additional languages. There's translations but that's all, no mention of British English there anyway.
    All the other posts I've found on this whole English/American issue suggest simply checking the language in 'edit list'  - I've not seen any responses yet from anyone not able to do so.
    Anyone any ideas?
    thanks
    J

    Sounds like a broken preferences file.  Try setting up another user account and see if you can check the box for British English where you are logged into that.

  • Spelling with Xchat

    Hi!
    I'm trying to get spelling to work with Xchat. I need both English and Swedish working at the same time. In Debian i solved this by adding
    LANGUAGE="sv_SE.UTF-8:en_US.utf-8"
    in /etc/environment. This does not seem to work in Arch.
    If I do in console:
    export LANG=en_US.utf-8
    I get English spelling working but not Swedish.
    If I do in console:
    export LANG=sv_SE.UTF-8
    I get Swedish spelling working.
    Anyone knows how to get both Swedish and English spelling working at the same time? I also got problems having Swedish in Firefox as well. both the gui and spelling is not working.
    I am using KDE4 and have installed aspell-sv from aur and aspell-en from standard repos. I also have
    LOCALE="sv_SE.UTF-8"
    in /etc/rc.conf
    Help would be welcomed!
    Last edited by Eazy1 (2010-02-20 19:35:54)

    I solved this temporarily with a start script for Xchat like this:
    #!/bin/bash
    #!/bin/bash
    export LANG=sv_SE.utf-8
    export LANGUAGE=sv_SE.UTF-8:en_US.utf-8
    xchat
    There must be another way to solve this system wide.
    I also cant get Firefox to use Swedish. Spelling works with both Swedish and English since I installed Swedish spelling from Mozillas site.

  • Office X French Dictionary? Spelling/Grammer? Help!

    I know this really doesn't belong here but I'm not finding anything on Microsoft's website and I'm wondering if someone would be able to help me out. I'm working on a French project right now and I used to be able to check spelling/grammer in French on my PC, however on my PowerBook I'm finding it difficult to figure out how to find that add-on or switch into that mode. Does anyone have the add-on and could send it to me? I can't find anything for it anywhere on microsoft's site! Thank you very much!

    Fine.
    I could find 13 files for French Dictionary, Grammer, Thesaurus etc. in "Office X/Shared Applications/Correction Helpers (?)" (the path is transalted from German, not sure about the correct English spelling).
    What do you find there? Are you sure that you have installed all components from the install CD?
    Anyhow, provide your email address, I will attach all 13 (7.4 MB, zipped 3.9) and mail them to you. I hope that they would work with your English version.

  • Spellchecker uses Great Britain spelling

    Ubuntu 12.04, Firefox 29.0 that comes with it. Spellchecker (at least in facebook comments on a newspaper site) wants to "correct" me to use English spelling ("colour" vs. "color") I went to about:config and changed spellchecker.dictionary from en_GB to en_US but A) I'm still being prompted for English spelling, and B) at least once this setting has reset itself back to en_GB
    How do I make my Firefox stick with US spelling as the default?

    [[How do I use the Firefox spell checker?|This article]] outlines how to select spellcheck dictionary preferences without about:config.
    If you don't want Firefox to autocorrect for you, and have Ubuntu do it instead, here's how:
    * Open Firefox
    *Click "Hotdog menu" in right corner
    *Select "Preferences"
    *Select "Advanced" tab
    There you will see a browsing option where you can set your preference on autocorrect.
    If you want to your system to handle autocorrect instead of Firefox, deselect this option.

  • Firefox 9.0.1 UK seems to say everything is badly spelt, why?

    Since updating to Firefox 9.0.1 UK the app seems to think that my spelling language should be Greek, as the right click shows Greek as my language! I have set the language to English UK in prefs, and my entire system is English based. No other spell checkers seem to agree with Firefox. On my blog (Wordpress engine, self hosted) every single word is underlined in red by Firefox (this does not happen on any other browser). But even on Facebook where the text boxes normally show instructions Firefox underlines the default live text! Can anyone tell me if they are familiar with this or seen it before?
    Thanks VM

    The question is not what all the screens mean. Whee do I get rid of the Greek spelling preference and the fact that Firefox assumes my default spelling is Greek?
    It's a huge pain having to right click everything I write and tell the browser that I am not writing in Greek, or indeed US English. I write in UK English spelling and anyway I am British. So I don't understand where Firefox is getting the idea I should be writing in Greek to begin with. Yes I live in Athens but my system is Mac OS X 10.6.8 and no where does the system have Greek as a default setting. I have the Greek keyboard activated since as a graphic designer working in Greece I deal with Greek text. But the system is not a localised one.
    I can not find any menu for changing my desired default writing language in Firefox.

  • EtreCheck report for slow Mac.

    Hi. Like so many I experience frequent crashes (well, not me personally – my computer!) on my 2011 iMac since installing Maverick. Safari, Mail, but especially Pages, all crash. Worst of all, things have got much slower. I still have 222 of 500 GB of hard drive available. I see from others' questions that I should get an EtreCheck report. Here is the result. I'd be very glad if someone can spot a problem that might be slowing things down. I have the same problems with my MacBook. I'll do the same with that later. Many thanks.
    Yep, I haven't configured Time Machine yet, since my only external hard drive is being used with my MacBook.

    At least three problems exist:
    MacKeeper
    AppCleaner
    ShinySoft
    All must be removed.
    Given the extent to which that Mac has been corrupted by those programs and for other reasons that follow below, I strongly recommend that it be completely erased and reconfigured from the ground up. Please write back for instructions should you decide to to that.
    Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper. Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components. Never install such junk on a Mac.
    If you actually used MacKeeper to alter your system, e.g. "remove excess binaries" or such, you will need to reinstall OS X as well as all your additional software. Uninstalling MacKeeper is insufficient to reverse the corruption it is capable of - once again, that is if you used it.
    If you merely installed MacKeeper but did not use it to perform any particular action, the following instructions will suffice.
    If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
    Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
    Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
    Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
    You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
    You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
    Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
    After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.
    I recommend you uninstall Shiny Soap Agent. It appears to be a remote access tool (RAT).
    You may have legitimate reasons for having installed remote access software developed by a company in Slovakia, but any remote access tool can easily be used for nefarious purposes.
    http://shinysoap.com/remote-support
    Shiny Soft's relationship to Teamviewer seems questionable to me, and their command of conventional English spelling does little to inspire confidence in a tool that can be used to remotely control a Mac:
    If you were not aware that such software was installed, I recommend nothing less than completely erasing your Mac to ensure it has not been altered in a malicious manner.
    You should avoid all utilities that make absurd claims such as "clean your Mac with a click":
    They are all scams, in one form or another. If you're fortunate, all you will lose is the money and time you invested in using such garbage.
    May I suggest that you review the following setting in System Preferences?
    Although you may easily override that setting, it will serve to protect you from inadvertently installing garbage. The overwhelming majority of Macs I come across have the MacKeeper installer file already present in their Downloads folder, often multiple copies of it. The downloaded file itself can do nothing until it is opened and installed, and the above setting (known as Gatekeeper - not to be confused with MacKeeper) will prevent that from occurring.
    Use caution when playing Minecraft. Scam artists often use promises of enhanced game privileges to gull users into installing remote access software. That alone might explain the presence of Shiny Soap.
    When discussing any Mac related concern you should purge the word "clean" from your lexicon. It's misleading in that it implies neglecting a Mac will cause it to somehow become "unclean", and after all who wants a filthy Mac. The emotional connotation results in many Mac users represented on this site relating tales of misery after using garbage "cleaning" apps. Avoid them as you would a social disease.

  • WebUtil_File Function Typo

    The defined function "webutil_file.get_file_separator" is actually misspelled in the software. To use it, you have to misspell it as "webutil_file.get_file_seperator". Will this be corrected in future versions?

    Tis simply the Olde English spelling, however, yes this (and a couple of other typos that I will leave you to discover) has been corrected

  • Lenovo Energy Management - Where is my Dust Removal button?

    Hello. After installation my Windows 8.1 which i downloaded from Microsoft DreamSpark i installed all drivers from a CD which came with my laptop in a box.
    I installed Lenovo Energy Management and I had button to remove dust. After updating my system via WindowsUpdate this button dissapeared. It's gone.
    My laptop is Lenovo G500s (without touchable screen).
    Anyone had same problem like me?
    I want to emphasize that after fresh installation of Win 8.1 without any uptates (Windows 8.1 Pro - Build 9600) i had that "remove dust" button.
    Sorry for my bad english spelling but I'm from europe. Hope you forgive me.

    hi lyczewskiand,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
    If this is the Dust removal that you are saying.
    If your system is Windows 8.1
        Open Control Panel / Uninstall a program and uninstall the Lenovo Energy Management that is currently installed.
    Now try and install this version
     Lenovo Power Management
    Check if this can be found on this version
    If not can you post a screenshot of what showing up on your end.
    Thanks,
    Regards

  • How to stop implicit commit in Dynamic PL/SQL??

    Hi friends,
    I have designed a package which uses DBMS_SQL for dynamic PL/SQL processing.I have observed that once you execute a statement using DBMS_SQL ,the action gets immidiately commited.I want to overcome this situation..as I need to have tighter control on the DML actions...Can somebody suggest a way using which these implicit commits can be stopped??????????

    Hi,
    Thanks for your help as always ....
    I have a build a pl/sql report in oracle apps.
    When i ran the report for 'American English' with date as a parameter the report is running fine.
    But the same when i ran for 'Brazilian Portuguese' it is erroring out.
    I found that the issue is because of the date , which is different from English to Portuguese.
    As an example , the month 'FEB' is in English but the same is 'FEV' in Portuguese
    I tried to alter the session when the report is running for 'Brazil' but sit goes in vain.
    Below is way i try to handle the condition.
    IF L_BOOK_TYPE = 'BRAZIL' THEN
    execute immediate 'alter session set nls_language=Brazilian Portuguese';
    end if;
    Please give an assistance on this.Sounds like you have some code that is relying on the English spelling of month names, which is poor practice.
    Either use numeric values for the month as sybrand suggests, or always ensure your code specifies the NLS langauge required for the code to work e.g.
    SQL> select to_char(sysdate, 'MON', 'nls_date_language=english') from dual;
    TO_
    MAR
    SQL> select to_char(sysdate, 'MON', 'nls_date_language=french') from dual;
    TO_CH
    MARS
    SQL>
