Unicode Sorting?
Is there a sorting sequence in Oracle 9i which would give me unicode sorting?
Our application needs to provide international support using Oracle as the backend database. Application is written in Java and we are using Data Direct JDBC driver to connect to Oracle. The application sorts data in 2 ways - ORDER BY clause sent to database or result set sorted in JAVA and there are reasons why each one is chosen where it is and it is not desirable to switch to one or another sort methods completely. Java supports unicode sorting. Is there an equivalent collating sequence which will sort similarly for the ORDER BY sorts such that there is consistency between the database sort and java sorting? We expect our database tables to store unicode strings - i.e columns could have data from multiple languages and thus binary sorting would not be adequate. We are using the SQL NCHAR data types to implement Unicode and not relying on the database cahracter set to be used as UTF8.
Thanks
Raj
There is a chapter in the Oracle Globablization Guide http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96529/ch4.htm#1656 on linguistic sorting.
Off the top of my head, I don't know how Java sorts unicode data, but I'm certain you can achieve the same in Oracle.

Unicode and non-unicode string data types Issue with 2008 SSIS Package
Hi All,
I am converting a 2005 SSIS Package to 2008. I have a task which has SQL Server as the source and Oracle as the destination. I copy the data from a SQL server view with a field nvarchar(10) to a field of a oracle table varchar(10). The package executes fine
on my local when i use the data transformation task to convert to DT_STR. But when I deploy the dtsx file on the server and try to run from an SQL Job Agent it gives me the unicode and non-unicode string data types error for the field. I have checked the registry
settings and its the same in my local and the server. Tried both the data conversion task and Derived Column task but with no luck. Pls suggest me what changes are required in my package to run it from the SQL Agent Job.
Thanks. What is Unicode and non Unicode data formats
Unicode :
A Unicode character takes more bytes to store the data in the database. As we all know, many global industries wants to increase their business worldwide and grow at the same time, they would want to widen their business by providing
services to the customers worldwide by supporting different languages like Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Arabic. Many websites these days are supporting international languages to do their business and to attract more and more customers and that makes life
easier for both the parties.
To store the customer data into the database the database must support a mechanism to store the international characters, storing these characters is not easy, and many database vendors have to revised their strategies and come
up with new mechanisms to support or to store these international characters in the database. Some of the big vendors like Oracle, Microsoft, IBM and other database vendors started providing the international character support so that the data can be stored
and retrieved accordingly to avoid any hiccups while doing business with the international customers.
The difference in storing character data between Unicode and non-Unicode depends on whether non-Unicode data is stored by using double-byte character sets. All non-East Asian languages and the Thai language store non-Unicode characters
in single bytes. Therefore, storing these languages as Unicode uses two times the space that is used specifying a non-Unicode code page. On the other hand, the non-Unicode code pages of many other Asian languages specify character storage in double-byte character
sets (DBCS). Therefore, for these languages, there is almost no difference in storage between non-Unicode and Unicode.
Encoding Formats:
Some of the common encoding formats for Unicode are UCS-2, UTF-8, UTF-16, UTF-32 have been made available by database vendors to their customers. For SQL Server 7.0 and higher versions Microsoft uses the encoding format UCS-2 to store the UTF-8 data. Under
this mechanism, all Unicode characters are stored by using 2 bytes.
Unicode data can be encoded in many different ways. UCS-2 and UTF-8 are two common ways to store bit patterns that represent Unicode characters. Microsoft Windows NT, SQL Server, Java, COM, and the SQL Server ODBC driver and OLEDB
provider all internally represent Unicode data as UCS-2.
The options for using SQL Server 7.0 or SQL Server 2000 as a backend server for an application that sends and receives Unicode data that is encoded as UTF-8 include:
For example, if your business is using a website supporting ASP pages, then this is what happens:
If your application uses Active Server Pages (ASP) and you are using Internet Information Server (IIS) 5.0 and Microsoft Windows 2000, you can add "<% Session.Codepage=65001 %>" to your server-side ASP script.
This instructs IIS to convert all dynamically generated strings (example: Response.Write) from UCS-2 to UTF-8 automatically before sending them to the client.
If you do not want to enable sessions, you can alternatively use the server-side directive "<%@ CodePage=65001 %>".
Any UTF-8 data sent from the client to the server via GET or POST is also converted to UCS-2 automatically. The Session.Codepage property is the recommended method to handle UTF-8 data within a web application. This Codepage
setting is not available on IIS 4.0 and Windows NT 4.0.
Sorting and other operations :
The effect of Unicode data on performance is complicated by a variety of factors that include the following:
1. The difference between Unicode sorting rules and non-Unicode sorting rules
2. The difference between sorting double-byte and single-byte characters
3. Code page conversion between client and server
Performing operations like >, <, ORDER BY are resource intensive and will be difficult to get correct results if the codepage conversion between client and server is not available.
Sorting lots of Unicode data can be slower than non-Unicode data, because the data is stored in double bytes. On the other hand, sorting Asian characters in Unicode is faster than sorting Asian DBCS data in a specific code page,
because DBCS data is actually a mixture of single-byte and double-byte widths, while Unicode characters are fixed-width.
Non-Unicode :
Non Unicode is exactly opposite to Unicode. Using non Unicode it is easy to store languages like ‘English’ but not other Asian languages that need more bits to store correctly otherwise truncation will occur.
Now, let’s see some of the advantages of not storing the data in Unicode format:
1. It takes less space to store the data in the database hence we will save lot of hard disk space.
2. Moving of database files from one server to other takes less time.
3. Backup and restore of the database makes huge impact and it is good for DBA’s that it takes less time
Non-Unicode vs. Unicode Data Types: Comparison Chart
The primary difference between unicode and non-Unicode data types is the ability of Unicode to easily handle the storage of foreign language characters which also requires more storage space.
Non-Unicode
Unicode
(char, varchar, text)
(nchar, nvarchar, ntext)
Stores data in fixed or variable length
Same as non-Unicode
char: data is padded with blanks to fill the field size. For example, if a char(10) field contains 5 characters the system will pad it with 5 blanks
nchar: same as char
varchar: stores actual value and does not pad with blanks
nvarchar: same as varchar
requires 1 byte of storage
requires 2 bytes of storage
char and varchar: can store up to 8000 characters
nchar and nvarchar: can store up to 4000 characters
Best suited for US English: "One problem with data types that use 1 byte to encode each character is that the data type can only represent 256 different characters. This forces multiple
encoding specifications (or code pages) for different alphabets such as European alphabets, which are relatively small. It is also impossible to handle systems such as the Japanese Kanji or Korean Hangul alphabets that have thousands of characters."<sup>1</sup>
Best suited for systems that need to support at least one foreign language: "The Unicode specification defines a single encoding scheme for most characters widely used in businesses around the world.
All computers consistently translate the bit patterns in Unicode data into characters using the single Unicode specification. This ensures that the same bit pattern is always converted to the same character on all computers. Data can be freely transferred
from one database or computer to another without concern that the receiving system will translate the bit patterns into characters incorrectly.

Hi Supports,
I am using sapinst homogeneous system copy in Linux on sybase.
I stuck on the the step 27/49 "create Database".
I checked Firewall is off.
i got points in my sapinst_dev.log that "
1)The log segment in the target database 'SID' is too small (9216 MB) to accommodate the log segment from the dumped database (10240 MB)"
and
2)"Can't change the owner of the master, model, tempdb or sybsystemprocs database"
Do i need to increase "sybase/SID/saplog_1" ? because my "saplog_1" is 49 mb now.
if it is ! how do i increase in this stage.
can any one know about this error???
Thanks,
Aziz.Hi,
When i seen SID.log file so its showing deadlock and checkpoint occurring,
Is any solution ???
Is this because of networks?
we had 2 servers on this same IP. but i stopped one server and one is still running.
please find my SID.log file and revert back if any soltion.

Windows Central Instance ABAP+JAVA plus UNIX ABAP dialog instances ?
Hi everybody,
we are an SAP software partner and provide SAP complementary software on UNIX and Windows platforms.
Part of our software (a gateway) needs to be installed on the SAP application server.
In order to setup a cross-platform test environment for our developers, I was thinking about extending the existing SAP ERP 6.0 Windows-based Central Instance (IDES, Oracle, usage types ABAP+JAVA) by multiple ABAP dialog instances which run on different UNIX flavours (Solaris, AIX, Linux).
I searched the SAP Notes and found nothing which could confirm my plans, as this is quite an unusual setup and heterogenous systems are usually the other way round (CI on UNIX, DI on Windows).
SAP Note 1067221 however mentions that DIs on different OS platforms are only partly supported, but it seems this is only valid for JAVA DIs?
As I need only ABAP DIs, I hope my plans are fine?
Many thanks for your feedback

Well - what is "usual" depends on the requirements
It's possible to do that. Technically there's no difference whether an application server is Unix or Windows based.
There are, however, a few things to take care of:
- if your system is non-Unicode, sorting algorithms are different on different platforms. Unicode systems use ICU which is cross-platform
- if you want to automatically distribute your kernel on system start you will need to create a "share" on the Windows machine and make it accessible from the various other platforms. You can, however, ensure "manually", that you use the same kernel patchlevels on all systems, then this is not needed
- Windows is LittleEndian whereas most Unix systems are BigEndian, depending on if you exchange data between those systems (means, binary data, files through NFS) the programs must be aware of the fact, that a file can be either LE or BE.

we have problems with our reports in Collection Manager again. We reboot the CM, but the problems continue.
This is the log of the CM. What can be the problem? Thanks tomo

[BUG?] af:table table empty after descending sort and remove
Hi,
I think i found a bug.
I have an af:table binded to an arraylist in a backingbean. This List consist of an object that represents two strings (value 1 and 2).
Now when the table is loaded and I sort descending on one of the columns. After sorting i'll try to remove a row. The correct row is published to the bean with an af:setPropertyListener and removed from the arraylist. But when the table is rendered again there are no values in the table. But the arraylist still has all remaining values which will be shown after a sort again.
Fun fact: it only happens when sorting descending.
Anyone got an idea?

audit-core oracle.ide.audit.core 11Hi Harry (and others),
I have seen similar behavior. It seems like the client side rendering for some reason has a hard time processing the collection model wrapping the ArrayList in this particular case. The table renders empty. After sorting in ascending order, the rows are all back (visible) again.
Is anyone aware of issues with the rich table based directly on ArrayList (in combination with a changing set of values and/or sorting)? (seems like a corner case but is still not uncommon). Is there any indication that wrapping the ArrayList in a CollectionModel ourselves might be required?
Harry: do you know whether this issue is introduced with PS3 (11.1.1.4) or already existed in previous releases?
kind regards,
Lucas -
Weird Symbols in my Text! Help! (Unicode?)
So, InDesign has decided to change certain character combos into weird characters. When I copy them out, they show up right in every other program - but they print and export wrong (otherwise I wouldn't care too much).
il = S with a v mark on top (I don't even know how to make it with the keyboard, or what it's called.)
io = Ú
There may be more that I haven't come across yet.
It's done this before, but I don't remember how I fixed it. It had something to do with changing to or from some kind of Unicode, I think.
Working in Snow Leopard, CS6 with Cloud.
Thanks! -T
EDIT: It doesn't do it in certain boxes, but I have no idea why some and not others.
EDIT 2: FIXED! Yay for corrupt fonts! (/sarcasm) Deactivating and then reactivating the trouble fonts fixed the problem.
It's still an InDesign bug though, since it DOESN'T affect any of my other programs. Omg. That was not cool to happen on deadline.Glad you could get it to work again! Nothing like a good deadline to encounter such problems.
Here is a bit of background information:
A font consists of 'regular' characters (which you can type in from a keyboard; those are indeed Unicode characters), 'special' characters (ligatures, Real Small Caps, Oldstyle numbering, etc., which typically are not valid Unicode characters), and a list of commands which say "if these two character go in, replace them by this single other one instead". That list of commands specifies OpenType ligatures -- and it doesn't really work on characters, but on glyphs instead. A 'character' has a Unicode value, but a 'glyph' may not have one -- it's just an index in the list of all individual drawings in the font, specifying the nth glyph in there.
When all's well, this is not something you'd ordinarily notice. InDesign keeps a list of all fonts, and of all characters and glyphs in all of these fonts, and its OpenType Glyph relations (which, as you may deduce, are only valid for the font they appear in -- some fonts have more "glyphs" than others, and the Glyph Order varies wildly from one font to another, as you can see in the Glyphs Panel when sorted on "GID" (= "Glyph ID")).
What happened with your system is that presumably InDesign got the list of 'glyphs' from one file, but OpenType features from another file, with the exact same font name! So the perfectly normal operation "if you see glyph number 15 followed by glyph number 31, replace it with glyph number 65", meaning for that one font "replace "f" followed by "i" with the glyph "fi"", got confused and instead came to mean "replace "i" followed by "l" with "Š"" (its proper name is "S Caron", with the Caron being this V accent).
So possibly you had more than one version of the same full font name installed (not the file name, but the internal full font name; "Times New Roman Italic", for example). One of the tricks to check this is to select this weirded-up text and disable Automatic Ligatures. If you see it revert to readable text, then this was the issue.
It's also possible something inside your system got confused -- InDesign, written by Adobe, accessed loads and loads of Extra Tricks in fonts that your typical other software doesn't care, or even know, about. That's why mishaps of this kind are typically picked up first by InDesign.
The Find Font dialog is your friend in tackling this issue. You can inspect the file paths of the troublesome fonts, and see if there is anything out of order; for example, you might suddenly see an unexpected file path. A tell-tale sign of Double Font Syndrome is when you physically remove that font file out of InDesign's view, and you can still see it works in InDesign -- but now with another file path in the Find Font dialog. At that point you only have to decide which one of the two was the "correct" font file ... -
Error while database export in package SAPDODS_33 (Unicode conversion)
Hello,
I am performing Unicode conversion on an upgraded BI 7.0 system. This is running on AIX/DB2.
When I take database export for conversion, one package fails (SAPDODS_33) with error "The file system is full". In fact, df -k doesn't show that any file system is full.
I am taking the export to the following location: /db2/BWS/sapdata/EXPORT_DIR
There are 3 system-managed temporary tablespaces: PSAPTEMP, PSATEMP16 & SYSTOOLSTMPSPACE which were residing in /db2/BWS/saptemp1/NODE0000. This was getting full during the export. Now these temp.tablespaces have been relocated to a new file system of size 15GB.
But still the package SAPDODS_33 doesn't get exported. Could you please let me know how to solve this issue?
Thanks a lot!
Sundar.

p/sapinst/sapinst_instdir/NW04S/LM/COPY/DB6/EXP/CENTRAL/AS-ABAP/EXP #Hi Sundar,
if the problem is due to a high temp space usage. The root cause is typically the
sort during export. If the table is large, the sort spills to temp.
You can avoid the sort by doing an unsorted export or tweak the DB2 optimizer to use the primary key to do the sort.
Before DB2 9, you can reduce the OVERHEAD tablespace parameter to zero. Return this value to its previous value after the successful export. This is a indirect hint to the optimizer that random IOs are cheap. This might not help.
With DB2 9, this should not happen, because the DB2_OPT_MAX_TEMP_SIZE=10240 registry variable is set under DB2_WORKLOAD=SAP which limits the temp space usage to 10GB if possible. You can reduce this parameter further if necessary. Another problem could be that the optimizer has chosen the wrong temp space. The optimizer choses the temp space with the largest amount of pages (not size).

Dump error while executing this unicode program.....
Hi,
I got a program for 'Production Order Quantity Change Daily Checklist' ,but while executing i got the dump error from the following program stating tat,
The current statement is only defined for character-type data objects.
Error in the ABAP Application Program
The current ABAP program "ZPROD" had to be terminated because it has

In this case. the operand "f" has the non-character-type "u". The
current program is a Unicode program. In the Unicode context, the type

Perform unicode to UTF-8 conversion on F110 bacs payment file in ABAP
Hi,
I am facing a conversion issue for the UK BACS payment files.
The payment run tcode F110 creates a payment file but the file when created on the application server has soem sort of code conversion. If I removed the # value, i can read most of the data.
The data example is as below-
#V#O#L#1#0#0#1#5#8#8# # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #2#4#3#3#0#9#
#H#D#R#1#A#2#4#3#3#0#9#S# # #1#2#4#3#3#0#9#0#0#0#0#0#2#0#0#0#1#0#0#0#1# # # # # # # #1#0#1#1#2#
#H#D#R#2#F#0#2#0#0#0#0#0#1#0#0# # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #
#U#H#L#1# #1#0#1#1#3#9#9#9#9#9#9# # # # #0#0#0#0#0#0#0#0#1# #D#A#I#L#Y# # #0#0#0# # # # # # # #
This is then transferred to the bank via the FTP UNIX Script but after the conversion which is happening as-
#Perform unicode to UTF-8 conversion on bacs file
$a = "iconv -f UNICODE -t UTF-8 $tmpUNI > $tmpASC";
The need going forward is to bring the details via the interface and then make an uplaod.
The ABAP code should be able to make the conversion, remove the additional chracters and then send the file across.
I have searched everywhere but I am not able to find out how to make the same conversion in ABAP.
We are on ECC6.
Can someone please help me?
Regards,
ArchanaHi Archana,

Text Overlapping/Wrapping Issue in BSP(Table Sorter Using JQUERY)
Hi ,
I have a requirement to add a new column in existing table which has been built by Table Sorter method in JQUERY.
I have added the new column but the issue is value for the new column is populated on next line of the table.
This could be a simple width issue, but i don't know JAVA much.Attached the image for reference.
Code i have used is:
<input type="text" name="t_rbclaim[<%= lv_tabix%>].reason" size="3" maxlenth="3" wrapping = "true"
onBlur="javascript:this.value=this.value.toUpperCase();" value="<%= w_rbclaim-reason%>">
Please let me know how to modify the above code in better way.Hi Raja,
Can you please help on this problem. I want to know whether there is any funciton module to convert the univercel character set code (HTML Codepage) page to SAP codepage. We are going to use ECC 6.0 which is unicode system for background R/3. So we can get the correct character format if identify the correct conversion method.
Please let me know if any information and expect some information on this.

Wrong sorting of non-English characters (iTunes 11.2)
Since version 11.2 of iTunes, there is a problem with sorting of names with non-English characters (such as ž, š, č, ř or other in Czech). It seems that iTunes completely omits these characters when sorting. As an example, I have Čajkovskij (which is the Czech spelling of Tchaikovsky) among artists in my library and it is currently sorted between Adele and Alan Parsons Project, i.e. it seems that the character Č has been completely omitted while sorting and thus the artist is sorted as Ajkovskij.
All my ID3 tags are of version 2.3 and in Unicode, thus this should not be any encoding problem. I even tried to change the ID3 tags to version 2.4, i.e. UTF-8, and it did not help.
I think that there must be many more people experiencing this problem. Not everyone has only English or ASCII names in the library and I am surprised that I could not find anything on this bug anywhere on the net yet.
Thanks for any help on this.Looks like a bug in the latest build. See this recent thread.
You could report the problem via iTunes Feedback or sign up for a free Apple Developer Connection account and make use of Apple Bug Reporter.

Non-English artist name sorting
Hello! I just bought my iPod Touch today, and it's my first ever iPod so i'm still getting used to it. I have a question, though, regarding how artists are sorted.
I bought my Touch in Japan (finally found a store with stock!), and I would say 90% of my music is in Japanese. However, the artists whose names are written in kana/kanji just get lumped at the bottom past "Z" and under the "." part of the alphabet, rather than either being appropriately sorted in under the appropriate English letter, or having their own kana section in the list.
Is this just how iPods are, or is there something that I can do to have them sort in properly?
Thanks,
Mattthe artists whose names are written in kana/kanji just get lumped at the bottom past "Z" and under the "." part of the alphabet, rather than either being appropriately sorted in under the appropriate English letter, or having their own kana section in the list.
I'm curious -- does Windows Vista sort them the way you want them in iTunes or elsewhere? As far as I know, the international standards for sorting multilingual lists would always keep different scripts separate, and follow Unicode order for example for Kana and then separately for Kanji.
