Updated Quicktime...now Mail won't open

I updated quicktime yesterday and immedately afterwards Mail would not open anymore. It just bounces (usually just once) and then nothing. Anyone know how to fix this or how to revert to the previous version of quicktime?

Actually, I have it on very good authority (Apple
person) that you can install the combo 10.4.6 update
and it will not step on SecUpd 2006-003 components
I cannot believe this. The Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo Update would certainly overwrite files installed by the Security Update 2006-003 (e.g. Safari). Could this be a misunderstanding? The Security Update 2006-003 does not touch anything in the Mail.app bundle, could this be what that person really meant? I'm pretty sure reinstalling the Security Update 2006-003 is necessary if the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo Update is reinstalled on a system where the Security Update 2006-003 had already been installed.
Also, I don't think that the Combo will alter the QT status.
EDITED: I agree with you on this, but I'm not sure, so I thought it would be appropriate to be on the safe side and take that possibility into consideration.
I suspect it is the Mail program that got damaged
I don't think so. According to the Console error messages, Mail crashes right upon start up because there is something amiss in /System/Library/Frameworks/.
Not sure QT re-install is needed.
It could very well be that properly reinstalling the QuickTime update fixes whatever went awry in /System/Library/Frameworks/ during the first attempt. If not, then reinstalling the Combo Update will be necessary, indeed.
I'll try installing the QuickTime update myself tomorrow (today here :-)) to see what happens.
Regards.

Down loaded the latest updates today now mail won't open??

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, reinstall any updates that may not have been installed properly. It may also be necessary to reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with your computer:
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo Update
Security Update 2007-003 for Mac OS X 10.3.9
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:

Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

    John,
There is something strange about this update notice by means other than Software Update -- the one I saw was on MacMinute. Neither of my Macs running 10.4.5 had this one presented by Software Update. It is very close to the same version number as the one presented yesterday by Software Update. I have been trying to find whether there was a specific "fit" for it, but have not found the key.
Downloading and installing an update of this type, that is not presented by Software Update may be problematic. I will keep researching.

I ran an itunes update, but now itunes won't open as it says it hasn't been installed correctly. How do I reinstall it?

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

good diagnosis, iWonnaMac. your version of this is almost certainly going to be due to an incompatibility between your QuickTime and Windows Update KB908531 on Server 2003 systems.
for some more info and background on troubleshooting that beast, see:
b noir: Re: Windows XP 64, trouble after install of itunes update
if you decide to go the "uninstall KB908531" route with this, strongly consider implementing one of the three workarounds described in the "vulnerabilty details" section of the following security bulletin:

Double-press the HOME button, find the app, and flick its screen image up to kill the in-memory copy of the app. The reboot your phone by holding the HOME and SLEEP buttons until an Apple logo appears.

  • Updated itunes now it won't open on my computer

I tried to update itunes so I could sync some music I bought on my computer to my phone, because my phone wasn't letting me download it directly. Now iTunes won't open. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling it twice, but each time it will not open. Also, when I'm installing it, it tells me I have iTunes currently running, which I don't.

I had this and managed to fix it:
    Download iTunes from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    Open the Terminal
    Run "sudo rm -r /Applications/iTunes.app"
    Re-install iTunes

  • Downloaded update and now it won't open

Yesterday I downlaoded the new iTunes update and now it will not open. I am running Norton and Microsoft Anti-spyware and took some hints from other messages and non of those have worked.
Anyone with ideas to fix this please send them to me and thank you to those who help!!

top fixes for a new iTunes install/upgrade are
    - turning off security software such as Norton before the install as Apple suggests
    - installing QuickTime standalone, not regular
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
    - setting up Norton to allow iTunes
    - scanning for malware with ewido (Free at www.ewido.net/en/)

  • Just did software update, now mail won't open!!

I just ran a software update and now may mail application won't open. These are the five updates that I installed:
    Backup 3.1.1
    iPhoto 6.0.6
    Airport Base Station 5.1
    iTunes 7.2
Mac OSX Update Combined (PowerPC) 10.4.10
I don't think I needed to install that last one, about the Power PC....Anyone know if that is enough to keep my Mail App. from openenig? I can still check my e-mail via .Mac, just not through my Mail Appliacation.

Did you download the correct Combo for PPC, since it
appears you do not have an Intel Mac?
If the correct Combo version, then I think you should
run Disk Repair from the original Tiger install disk
to check out your hard drive.
How much free disk space do you have on your hard
drive, or if partitioned, on the boot partition?
    Ernie
    Ernie,
thanks for the suggestions. I'm not quite the Mac expert I'd like to be, so bear with me please. How do I know if I downloaded "the correct Combo for PPC, since it appears you do not have an Intel Mac?" Wouldn't my computer automatically download the correct one? How can I check if it's the right one? ALSO,
How do I "run Disk Repair from the original Tiger install disk to check out your hard drive"? Do I need to insert the original startup disk again, or can I do it without it?
When doing info on my mac, it says I only have 6.1 GB left available. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!!!

  • Installing 10.9.2, "shutdown because of a problem", now Mail won't open and App Store won't work.

While installing OS X 10.9.2, my MacBook Pro suddenly "shut down because of a problem" (which isn't the first time that happened). Checking the Apple menu and "About this Mac" it says I have 10.9.2 installed. I tried to see if I could reinstall the update, figuring something went wrong when the computer shut down, but the App Store won't work, clicking on "Updates" or any other tab doesn't change the screen from the App Store icon in the center. Mail also won't open, which is what I ; I tried to see if I could reinstall the app, but I don't have the CD that the support page said I needed. It seems to be only Mail and FaceTime that won't open so far. How do I fix this?

I took it in to my university's apple care and they wiped and reinstalled the OS.
Next time I will just go in and ask, since it doesn't look like anyone else is getting any real help with this problem!

  • I just tried to update Itunes. Something went wrong with the update and now itunes won't open

I was notified of an update to itunes when I opened it on my PC this morning. I agreed to the update. The update did not finish and now I can't open itunes on the PC. I tried "repair" in the control panel to no avail. HELP!!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version, or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.
