Upgraded to 10.6.8 now Mail won't search

The top right search box in Mail does not seem to work after the latest upgrade to 10.6.8. It seems to work sometimes but I can't figure out why sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. For instance, I can search for "Bob" in my Inbox folder and it will pull up all messages from Bob. But if I search for "Bob" in my Sent folder it shows 0 found even though there are hundreds of messages there. It is not folder specific though. I can search for a subject or sender name (which I know is there) in my Inbox folder or All Mailboxes and also provides 0 results. Although, to thorougly confuse me some searches do produce results. Could there be some threshold of results that prevents some search results from displaying? Can't imagine that's it as some searches will return over 500 results and the ones that don't show would not have that many returns.
I believe this is a bug that was introduced in my last OS upgrade. Any ideas?

Ernie, thank you very much. I followed the reindexing and that may have helped, however I believe I found the problem and it was a PEBKAC issue. Total brain fade on my part.
When I was performing a search I did not have "Entire Message" selected for the results. I had the "From" selected. I don't typicaly click off of the entire message option, and since I don't typically use that feature didn't even think to look at the most obvious, right in front of me option. Feeling super intelligent.
I appreciate your help.

  • Just upgraded to 10.6.8, now Mail won't work.

Hi, I'm hoping one of you can help me. I just upgraded my MacPro to 10.6.8, and most of my apps (that I've tried, anyway) seem to be working OK, except my Mail program, for some reason, will not accept any new incoming mail from the server. My printer didn't want to work until I reinstalled the printer software, but I'm at a loss as to what to do with the Mail program, as there's nothing to reinstall for it. I've gone into the Preferences and everything seems to look good there. Seems to me I had this same kind of problem last time I upgraded, to 10.5, but I can't remember what I ended up doing to fix it at that time. Any help I can get from anyone will be gratefully appreciated.

If you moved the mail Application outside the protection of the Applications folder, it will no longer function after this update:
Mac OS X v10.6: "You can't use this version of Mail…" alert after installing Security Update 2012-004
Mail.app is a very common target of malware. Mail must remain in the protected Applications folder, not outside where it can be hacked.

  • Latest updates now mail won't open

Down loaded the latest updates today now mail won't open??

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, reinstall any updates that may not have been installed properly. It may also be necessary to reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with your computer:
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo Update
Security Update 2007-003 for Mac OS X 10.3.9
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Security Update....restart.....now Mail won't open!

I just installed the latest security update, restarted and now Mail won't open. What's going on?

    John,
There is something strange about this update notice by means other than Software Update -- the one I saw was on MacMinute. Neither of my Macs running 10.4.5 had this one presented by Software Update. It is very close to the same version number as the one presented yesterday by Software Update. I have been trying to find whether there was a specific "fit" for it, but have not found the key.
Downloading and installing an update of this type, that is not presented by Software Update may be problematic. I will keep researching.

I upgraded to the new OS 10.9 and now my mail won't work.  Any suggestions?

How are you trying to access gmail? Are you using their web mail page at www.gmail.com? Or using the Apple Mail application? Or something else?
If you are trying to use the web mail, what browser are you using? Does the failure occur when you try to load the initial page, or after you try to log in?

  • Just upgraded to Maverick, now mail won't automatically upload new messages

My 93 year old father just upgraded his operating system to Maverick and now his new Mail won't automatically upload to his inbox.  I don't use Mail in this way and have no idea what adjustment needs to be made so it will work again.  It keeps asking for his email password but that doesn't help.  Any suggestions?  I'm sure it's an easy fix...somehow they just aren't communicating...  Thanks!

  • Upgraded Panther to Tiger: now Mail won't download email from Sympatico

    Hi there,
If someone wouldn't mind advising... I just ugraded my wife's powerbook from Panther to Tiger (10.4.9)... and even though her email settings are still the same (incoming server, outgoing server, etc.), Mail won't collect her email from the Sympatico site.
Do I have to get rid of her Mail prefs and re-boot? Or something? (if it's the former, which prefs exactly, and where are they?).
    thanks,
    Malcolm

You can always delete your account from Mail and re-create it... There are 2 kinds of account settings for a Sympatico account:
The "old ones" that have the same settings since Sympatico started 10 years ago:
    Username: b1**##
    Password: access password
    Incoming mail (POP3): pop6.sympatico.ca
    Outgoing mail (SMTP): smtp1.sympatico.ca
Port server 25 for Outgoing (SMTP)
Port server 110 for Incoming (POP3)
The other Sympatico e-mail is the enhance one with MSN. The settings are differents and the authentification is different. Any new Sympatico accounts since June 2004 are on that new plaform:
    Username: [email protected]
    Password: e-mail password
    Incoming mail (POP3): pophm.sympatico.ca
    Outgoing mail (SMTP): smtphm.sympatico.ca
    Verify that your server is set to requires anthentiation with agin your Sympatico e-mail and Sympatico password;
Both servers, Outgoing and Incoming, require a secure connection (SSL)
If you are not sure witch is what try to login online at: http://www.sympaticomail.sympatico.ca it will tell you if can upgrade to new enhance e-mail or if you sign in like a Hotmail account if you are already enhance.
    I hope this help....
    Cheers

  • Just set up icloud and now mail won't...

I just set up icloud on my mac and now my mail won't recognize my password. Formerly, on mobileme i had the main computer which was pre-intel so now I'm switching to my intel mac. Everything is fine on cloud, all the data is there, but on my computers (intel computer and also pre-intel) when I try to check my mail it keeps saying that it doesn't recognize the password. I get mail fine on my iphone, and when I log into icloud but not on my computers (pre-intel or intel).

It's because you are using Leopard.  You will need to either upgrade your Mac to Snow Leopard then Lion or manually set up mail on your Mac in Mac Mail.  http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudmail.html is a link to a tutorial online on how to set up your mail manually on your Mac.  MobileMe is offering a free upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard.  The link is me.com/snow-leopard.  You can redeem a free disc to get your Mac to Snow Leopard, you will have to pay for the upgrade to Lion yourself though.

  • Updated osx and now mail won't load

    Hi all,
I've updated my operating system so that I could go on to upgrade to Lion, but in the interim my mail won't load - its telling me "an error occured while importing.  Make sure you have available space in your home folder and try again"...I can't even locate my "home" folder on my system...
Any ideas how I can fix this?  And will upgrading to Lion without the mail box being fixed perhaps fix it?

Sounds like something went pear-shaped somewhere along the line. I suggest reinstalling like this:
    * Go to [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/fx/?ref=logo Download Firefox 4.0] and download a fresh installation file to the desktop.
    * Then go to Add/Remove Programs, scroll down to Mozilla Firefox and remove it, choosing to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc., (don't checkmark the box).
    * Then reboot and delete the folder called Mozilla Firefox at this location: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    * Finally run the installation file you downloaded.
After you complete the installation, go to the [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ Plugins Check] page and update those if necessary.

  • Now Mail Won't Send eMail (self imposed password)

Apple's Mail has a known bug that it deletes your mail passwords sporadically. Now Mail has not only refused to pick up email while deleting the password, but has "deleted" the non existent password to send email.
Before when Mail deleted the password I could put it in again (and again) until it caught and worked again. But there is no outgoing email password, the server does not require one. If I put it a password it doesn't work because it can't. Does anyone have experience with this problem. It did this the first time last week and it went away after a few hours. But I do need to send email for my business.
Is there anything to do other than wait for it to go away again?
Anyone care to recommend a commercial email program to replace Mail? I have a few thousand emails in a few dozen folders that I would like to import. Is there any?
History, read this before asking any questions.
Mail has for years sporadically deleted incoming pop account passwords. They are deleted in Mail. The copy of the password in Keychain is still there, but Mail will fail to pick up your mail and ignore Keychain. This has been posted many times in this forum. The problem occurs randomly and goes away after awhile, but will return. If one has several pop accounts on the same server, some, all, or none of the accounts will have this problem at any given time. When the dialog pops up requesting the password the best thing to do is click cancel. Mail takes the account off-line. After awhile click the icon to the right of the "inbox" and click the button "Take all accounts online." It will usually work again. Sometimes it will not work. Delete the Keychain entry and put in (the same) password the next time the dialog comes up, check the "save in keychain" box and click okay. Usually it will take in then. Not sure why, but if you put the password in the first time the dialog appears, it almost always fails. some users have surmised that Mail sees any delay in the mail server response as a failed password and this problem is more frequent with webmail accounts than email accounts.
After ten years of OS X Mail use, and a year of off and on receiving problems, I have only this week started to have problems sending email. I have checked with my provider and there is nothing wrong with their servers and they have not suddenly changed the required Mail setup.

The last READ from the server does not contain any error that I can see, but I don't know what one would look like. At this point the dialog is up requesting a password.

Apple's Mail has a known bug that it deletes your mail passwords sporadically.
Sounds awfully definitive. Has Apple verified this for you?
I will, from time to time, be prompted for a password. I cancel and try again five minutes later. 90% of the time, it works fine the second time. The other 10% of the time, I have to wait for an indeterminate amount of time, sometimes several hours. This indicates, to me, that there was a problem contacting the server. I used to see similar behavior with Eudora years ago before I switched to Mail.
I never have to actually re-enter the password. At no time have my passwords been deleted.
None of this answers your questions, but hey... you come on here and cry "bug" and you're going to get challenged if others aren't seeing a bug.

  • Yosemite upgrade done now MAIL won't open

    Hi All
Running a 2011 macbook pro.  Just upgraded to OS X Yosemite. I now have two issues:
    1. In iCloud, it will not let me log out of my old account (old email address that i no longer own).  It tells me i need to open mail then try again.
    2. When i try to open mail it won't open and i get an error message and report that is sent to Apple.
Can anyone help please?  Low tech answers if possible
    Thanks

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.
