Use Sol8 intel as install server for NetraX1. possible?

I spend several days trying to reinstall the Solaris 8 10/01 into my brand new Netra X1 server. but no luck.
this is my first and only sparc server. i'm using Solaris 8 intel as install server and install the netra drivers...
my question is:
is it possible to using Solaris 8 intel as install server for Netra X1 net install?
I don't think i will buy one more sparc machine in this reason.
Chris

Yes, you can use an X86 box to install Solaris Sparc to a Netra X1.
First, you must be using InfoDoc 26310 ( available on SunSolve).
In between steps 6 & 7 of that procedure you must do the following:
After applying the mis.netra-x1.259-3836-03 script you will need to add the dmfe driver to the boot image served out by your jumpstart server. This is done at the shell prompt as root. Please note that in the example below the root image is located at: /jumpstart/2.8/sparc_1001/Solaris_8/Tools/Boot
on the example server. This location will vary depending on the setup of your server. The example is used to illustrate the point that you must specify the whole path all the way to the alternate root that is served across the network to your client. The sample command line is:
# add_drv -b /jumpstart/2.8/sparc_1001/Solaris_8/Tools/Boot -m "* 0600 root sys" -i '"pci128h,9102" "pci1282,9102" "ethernet"' dmfe
This can also be broken out using backslashes as follows:
# add_drv -b /jumpstart/2.8/sparc_1000/Solaris_8/Tools/Boot \
-m "* 0600 root sys" \
-i '"pci128h,9102" "pci1282,9102" "ethernet"' dmfe Note that the ">" symbols will be added as you hit return after each "\".
The above procedure must be done to each boot image you wish to install. For example, if you have a 10/2001 image and a 01/2001
image that you use for different configurations, you will need to add the dmfe driver to both .../Solaris_8/Tools/Boot directories.
Proceed with step 7 and beyond in the procedure from Info Doc 26310 to complete your installation.

  • Is it possible to use the snow leopard install disk for bootcamp setup?

I'm going to be installing a windows 7 partition through bootcamp on my macbook, but I can no longer find the two original install disks that it came with. So my question was whether or not its possible to go through the bootcamp process with the snow leopard install disk?

Do you mean a "Retail OSX Snow Leopard Install DVD for USD 29" ?
If so, then yes. use it.
Sounds to me like the Original Install Discs you refer to are OSX 10.5 Leopard ones, right ?
These won't work with Windows 7 since Windows 7 requires OSX Snow Leopard DVD at minimum for the Driver Installation and BootCamp Assistant version 3.x as well, which is also only avaiable in OSX Snow Leopard.

  • Need reasons not to use SMB/win2003 as file server for mac clients

    hey guys,
i'm looking for reasons not to use windwos2003 as fileserver with smb for use with os x in a graphic production environment.
can someone help? just need a sum up for "internal use"
smb seems to be slower than afp
    etc...
    thank you!

Well, it tends to be that saving over the network from Adobe and Quark apps "just works better" over AFP than it does over SMB.
Put another way, people wouldn't be paying $4000 for a software license form Extreme-ZIP so they can serve AFP from a Windows 2003 server if there wasn't a real benefit to this. You can get an Xserve for this same $4000

  • Using Mac as X11 display server for app running on Linux

    Hello all,
I am in the midst of learning Arabic, and am trying to get to the point of becoming comfortable with computing on Arabic screens with Arabic menus, etc. The Mac doesn't support this for Arabic, although it does for many other languages. (Neither does the Windows box, apparently, on a user by user basis. It looks like I would have to install Arabic Windows to get Arabic GUI. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.)
On my Linux server, however, I have most of my applications set up for multiple languages, and this works fine. I have a user set up who is my Arabic-speaking alterego with his default language set to Arabic and most applications respect it. However, the display for my Linux server is in a cramped corner, while the iMac, of course, sits proudly on my desk. It occurs to me that I should be able to use X11 for Mac so I can learn to think in Arabic in regal splendor.
I have X11 installed on here - I use it for OpenOffice locally - but am having trouble getting an application on the Linux box to see my display. Here is what I am doing:
    - I do xhost + on the Mac side (merepoint) to permit remote connections.
    - From the X11 terminal program on the Mac, I ssh over to my Linux server (openocean). I have tried ssh with no command line switches and with -X and with -Y. None of them appear to set the DISPLAY environment variable on the Linux box.
    - I run a Gnome or KDE application in the Linux session and it immediately doesn't find a display. It indicates an empty display string. (What a surprise.)
    - I run the command over there specifying -display merepoint:0 and it pauses and then doesn't find the display. This feels like the Mac isn't listening for remote connections or listens on some other port or display ID. I can ping back to my iMac just fine so it isn't confused about IP address or naming.
What do I need to do (at either end) to allow the connection to go through?
There appear to be no hardware issues. I'm not sure how the security, etc. works with X beyond opening or closing stuff from the display server with xhost. ssh and .Xauthority also comes into the mix somewhere, I think, but I'm confused as to the role they play and how they interact. I don't know if the X stuff on the Mac needs some special tweak to listen for remote connections. I didn't see any switches about that in the X11 preferences.
Eventually, I'd like to use Command-Opt-A to switch between my Mac screen and full-screen kdm login to the Linux box so I don't need to run over there. Any hints for getting that arrangement working - beyond the obvious user preference for full-screen, which works fine - would be valuable as well.

    iMac G4 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Thank you! Setting up "X11Forwarding yes" on the server side and restarting sshd did the trick. Now from my ssh session, I can do "LANG=ar_LB gedit" on the command line and get gedit with Arabic menus.
I found that I could even get my whole desktop up, albeit with some amusing things happening with sound across the room, using startkde. Is there a better way to get this effect?
Now I can just log in as my Arabic alterego and it should all work pretty well.

  • Can I use Mac Mini as a "server" for a MacBook Pro and iMac?

I want to develop a simple system for accessing my files from multiple devices.
I heavily use iTunes (190 GB), iPhoto (120 GB) and iMovie (30 GB, but want to do more when I get time).  Additionally, I store lots of old videos on circa 10 portable hard drives (1 TB each), which I access occasionally.
The family use all this content and we currently have a MacBook Pro and are considering buying a new computer - either a new MacBook Pro or an iMac. We also have iPads, iPhones etc and a Time Capsule. We use wireless fibre optic broadband.
I don't really want multiple iTunes and iPhoto libraries.  We want all our music and pictures in single master libraries that we can all access and update.
As there is seemingly too much data to store on iCloud, we need to find an alternative solution.
    My possible solution is:
    (1) Load my master iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie libraries ("iTPM libs") on a Mac mini
    (2) Buy a new MacBook Pro or iMac (probably doesnt matter which)
    (3) Link the MacBook Pro(s) and iMac to the Mac mini to access iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie and the master iTPM libs
    (4) Plug the portable hard drives into the Mac mini whenever I need to access the video content stored on the portable hard drives
    (5) Add "users" to the system (i.e. family members), in the same way you would access a shared server at work
    (6) Over time, buy more computers to access the system in the same way
    My questions are:
    (1) Is this system feasible?
    (2) If so, can I edit the iTPM libs from the MacBook Pro or iMac?
    (3) If so, what happens if both the MacBook Pro and iMac are accessing the libraries at the same time? Which takes precedent?
    (4) Would this solution be significantly slower than having separate libraries on the different computers?
    (5) Is there an alternative approach that might work better for my needs? (which are, after all, relatively straight forward).  When I went to the Apple store they were unsure!
    Many thanks.

[…] We want all our music and pictures in single master libraries that we can all access and update.
The "update" portion of this is where your problems will arise.  You'd be better to consider your proposed system initially in terms of content "consumption", before getting into the nitty-gritty of editing shared content.
iTunes has the Home Sharing feature built-in, which solves the content consumption issue.
I don't know anything about sharing iPhoto libraries, but this KB article looks useful.
As for iMovie, I think there are two things you want to do: share the raw data (sound effects, music, photos etc.) that are used to create iMovie content; and share the finished results.  Is that right?  I'm not sure how you'd go about doing that, but if you clarify your aims in this regard, it'll help the next person who comes along.
When it comes to updating content, such as adding new music to iTunes or iPhoto, I'd suggest you do it through the Mac mini directly.  This seems the least problematic solution.  You wouldn't necessarily need a dedicated display for the Mac mini - you could use remote desktop or VNC or what-have-you.
As for speed: doing anything across a network is always going to be slower than doing it locally.  But, it probably won't matter for content consumption (though if you're all watching different movies at the same time the drives on the server may struggle, and the wifi bandwidth might be tight).
I hope this represents a good initial response to your query.

  • Do I need to dedicate a computer such as a Mini to set up a server? Or can I use my iMac as my server for my 2 man company?

I was considering using my iMac for the server. Can I us it as my main computer as well as the server?
    Jim

As cpragman writes, more information helps tailor the answer.
As for the question posed, iMac will work just fine as a server and I know folks that use that, but a central consideration of any "repurposing" of a workstation for this is that servers deal with more than one person and usually with continuous access and comparatively few outages.  This for server-oriented services such as mail, DNS, Messages, web services, etc.  A workstation can boot and crash and be reconfigured or wiped and reloaded maybe not at a whim, but the workstation outages basically disrupt just one user.  Server outages can cause headaches for multiple users and uses.

  • Can I use 2011 OS X Install DVD for a 2006 OS X macbook pro with OS X 10.4

I've got a 2006 Macbook Pro with OS X version 10.4.11 which is exceedingly slow and has parental control software on it that's wreaking havoc (its defunct Kids Gogogo, by the way).  I'm wonder if I can use the install DVD from my new 2011 Macbook Pro to do a fresh install on the old Macbook Pro.
    Thanks!

    No.
The grey disks are hardware model specific with their own drivers.
Just buy the $29 10.6.3  Retail Disk from Apple and Software update.
10.6.8 is the best for that machine due to it's age, don't go with 10.7

  • Cisco 5508-WLC using MS NPS as RADIUS Server for EAP-TLS

Has anyone experienced a problem getting a Cisco WLC to work with MS NPS server? We've done it before albeit with differnt code versions.
I have a Cisco 5508 WLC running 7.0.116.0 code hosting a WLAN configured for WPA2 with 802.1x for authentication.  I have two Windows NPS servers configured as the RADIUS servers for EAP-TLS authentication. Via debug info on the WLC I can see the 802.1x handshake take place with the wireless client and the WLC as well as a successful transmission of an Authentication Packet from the WLC to one of the RADIUS servers. However on the WLC I see repeated RADIUS server x.x.x.x:1812 deactivated in global list and on the NPS server I'm seeing event log errors indicating "The Network Policy Server discarded the request for a user"  along with the pertinent auth request info that I would expect the NPS server to receive from the WLC.
Based on the WLC debug info I'm never actually getting to the EAP-TLS certificate authentication part. It seems the NPS servers don't like the format of the initial RADIUS authentication request coming from the WLC and so don't respond whcih in turn casues to WLC to switch to the other NPS server which produces the same issue.
Any ideas of what might be the issue or misconfiguration?

    Jim,
I wanted to know if you can setup wireshark on both of the boxes and see if your are hitting the following bug:
    http://tools.cisco.com/Support/BugToolKit/search/getBugDetails.do?method=fetchBugDetails&bugId=CSCti91044
It looks as if the WLC is retransmitting the client traffic from one radius session with primary over to the secondary in which the radius state attribute that was assigned from the primary server is probably hitting the secondary server. Therefore if the state attribute isnt assigned from the secondary server it will discard the packet.
May need to open a TAC case to see if this issue is on the 550x controllers also.
    Thanks,
    Tarik

  • Create a install-server on linux

    Hi,
I want to install solaris 9 on my ultra1 via
tftp. There is a script setup_install_server delivered
with solaris 9 but the readme talks about a solaris
system to act as install server. I dont have any other
solaris system, so is it possible to use linux
as an install server for solaris 9 net-install (and
    how )?
    Thanks in advance !
    Stefan

    HI,
The script which Ur talking about is used for unattended remote installation provided both the machines are in the same subnet JUMP start installation thats what it is called in solaris.
Setup_install_server script copies the content of the installtion CD to a machine which would act as a install server for a client which is being initiated for unattended installation, like wise UR suppose to setup an configuration server with configuration information, system identification sysidcfg file
I have never come across jump start installation being done between solaris and linux it's usually between two solaris machine with SPARC paltform.
My advice is to go for normal installation webstart .

  • Use external Kerberos server for OD master

    Hi all,
is it possible to use an existing external Kerberos server for our OD master Mac server (needs to be OD master for iCal, but we don't want to move the kerberos service to the Mac)?
Can anybody explain the necessary steps?
Thanks a lot for every hint.
    Rene

When I asked this same question about a year ago I never got a real good response from the outside contractor we deal with or from Apple... Essentially they believe you should stay all Mac for Auth or all other for Auth... Mixing is kind of frowned apon. Or at least at that time I don't know how people feel about this now.
You should be able to add your non-Mac kerberos source to your server using the Kerberos utility: /System/Library/CoreServices/Kerberos... Edit-> Edit Realms. From there I would hypothesize that if you manually edited your OD records for staff and changed the Passwd entry to point to your other Kerberos server that MAY work... Not sure there.
I always wanted to get User management down to as few of servers as possible. Going into next year we will only be using our Mac OD server for Machine management and using an OpenLDAP server running on Slackware Linux for User information. The OpenLDAP server fully emulates Apple's OD and is even reconized as an "Open Directory" server in Directory Utility without doing any Advanced or Manual steps. I currently have Kerberos on my OD server then bound to the same Kerberos Server that OpenLDAP is using and have also kerberized the AFP, FTP, and iChat services... All of which work fine. With a quick mod to /etc/authorization users authenticating to this source also get kerberos tickets to hold during the login process which can authenticate them to AFP shares without prompt... Um haven't found anything else thats good for yet, but were looking.... I recently had our Apple Account tech out here to ask about the final piece in my puzzle for iChat, but I'm waiting for an answer on that.
Don't know if any of this helps you, but maybe it can spark a thought to get you started:>

  • Use ibook as a wireless server

hello, i have a 14" ibook running leopard{os x 10.6.8}. it has an airport card in it. if i installed the server software for this os, can i use it as a wireless server? tonythanking you in advance,

You could also use it as a backup server for other Macs in the house.
I use a Mac mini (currently running Leopard) and CrashPlan (free to backup to your own backup server).
CrashPlan is running on my Macbook Pro (Mavericks) a Macbook (Lion), my Wife's Macbook Pro (Mavericks) and Macbook Air (Mavericks), and my Mom's iMac (Mountain Lion) 300 miles away.  It does a very nice job, even when the Macs are not in the house.

  • Solaris 10 box -  install server PROBLEMS

    Hi,
i have an E450 setup with solaris 10, i follwed the docs to create an install server for solaris 9.
problem is : when booting client it gets the RARP reply and then sits and does nothing ??
The 2 machines are on their own separate network.
    Server ip = 192.168.1.101 SN 255.255.255.0
    client ip = 192.168.1.102 SN 255.255.255.0
i ran the #./add_install_client -e 8:0:20:xx:xx:xx ( client is in /etc/hosts) which reports no errors
    /etc/bootparams shows = server1 root=Xerxes:/export0/sol_9/Solaris_9/Tools/Boot install=Xerxes:/export0/sol_9 boottype=:in rootopt=:rsize=32768
    /etc/dfs/dfstab shows = share -F nfs -o ro,anon=0 /export0/sol_9
is this correct ?? and why is the client not even getting to the spinning dial ?? let alone the installation, do i have to have a sysidcfg file ????

Excellent. So we can see that the RARP has completed (sucessfully it appears), but the TFTP step has not. Perhaps the TFTP server isn't running properly.
Now I see what's going on. You're running Solaris 10 on the machine, but you're trying to jumpstart Solaris 9. That's fine, but those older scripts don't understand how to start Solaris 10 services.
It's very likely that the 'add_install_client' script populated /etc/inetd.conf and HUP'ed inetd to start the TFTP server. That's not sufficient.
You probably have some lines in /var/adm/messages saying that you have to run 'inetconv'. Run that and you should get a tftp service. (Check by running 'svcs -a | grep tftp'). With that in place, the boot should proceed.
(In answer to your other question, yes this is a combination boot and jumpstart server. Thats what you get when you run 'setup_install_server' and you don't use the '-b' flag to make it only a boot server).
