Using Instron 5800 in Labview 7.0

Hi,
Please forgive me if I am very general in my question but that is because I am new to Labview. My situation is that I am trying to measure resistance data (from a DMM) and force data (from an Instron 5800 UTS machine) simultaneously during a compression test. The instrument controller for the 5800 is interfaced with my PC through a GPIB bus and uses its own proprietary control software. However it did come with Instron drivers and example Labview programs in order for interfacing with Labview. When I run that program it stops and cannot find the vi file 'Data Acquisition Initialize.vi" and some other vi's. Is this an important file? is it NI's responsibility or is it Instron?
Also if I try to approach the problem the other way (not use the example prog. but make my own Labview) then I can see the Instrument as a GPIB bus in MAX but the following information is displayed ('Instrument0', 'Primary Address = 3', Description - 'This device did not respond to a *IDN? query').
Any help on how to approach this problem would be much appreciated,
Thank you,

Where did you get the drivers? Were they from here? There is no mention of proprietary software required. In fact, I find it quite difficult to believe that proprietary software is required. If it's a GPIB instrument it would respond to GPIB commands, and that's not proprietary.
When I run that program it stops and cannot find the vi file 'Data Acquisition Initialize.vi" and some other vi's. Is this an important file? is it NI's responsibility or is it Instron?
I think you mean when you tried to open the program. If there's a subVI missing you won't be able to run the program. That VI is not a standard VI. It sounds like a VI from the instrument driver library.
Also if I try to approach the problem the other way (not use the example prog. but make my own Labview) then I can see the Instrument as a GPIB bus in MAX but the following information is displayed ('Instrument0', 'Primary Address = 3', Description - 'This device did not respond to a *IDN? query').
This happens often, especially with older instruments. All it means is the the instrument does not implement the standard *IDN? command. Within the instrument's set of commands it's probably a different command.

how do we use if statement in labview?moreover can i use if statement inside for loop?

The if statement in LabVIEW is the Case structure. You can find that on the Structures palette right next to the For Loop. If you're still on the same subject about terminating a for loop early, then what you do is enclose your functions inside the loop with a case statment and make one of the case's empty except for one or more constants that you might have to wire. Hopefully, the attached picture will explain what I mean. Also, as I mentioned in one of your other posts, I think this technique is not as good as using a while loop. The array in the attached example is the same size no matter what and you may have to handle stripping extra or invalid elements.

  • How to implement a dual booting PXI system using windows 7 and labview RT

    Good Day
My name is Mariano Ocana from the University of Manitoba, and I want to implement a dual system using windows 7 and labview RT in a PXIe-1082 chassis with a PXIe-8102 embedded controlled (the chassis came with windows 7 installed). What are the steps to use both systems (windows and RT)  in the same chassis?, in the NI help comes an example implementing a dual system using windows xp and RT, it is the same procedure?.
Thank you in advance for all your help.
    Regards
    M. Ocana

    Greetings, Mariano.
The real issue you have to contend with is whether or not you have a LabVIEW RT license.  If the 8102 controller was purchased Windows-Only, you likely do not have a license to run LabVIEW RT on the controller - you can purchase one, I think it's about $500, and at that point you can request a LabVIEW RT Configuration CD (that's not what it's called, but the sales guy will know what I'm talking about).  The Config CD is a CD that will partition your controller correctly with both FAT32 and NTFS filesystems (in the appropriate way) to allow you to run Windows 7 and LabVIEW Real-Time on the controller correctly.  Once done, you can then switch within the BIOS between LabVIEW Real-Time and Windows in order to dual-boot.
Either way, you likely need to contact NI sales to either purchase an RT license (if one was not received at the time of purchase) or to request a Configuration CD (it might also be called a dual-boot install CD or similar).

  • Getting the data in file using DAQ assistant in Labview

I am using SCXI 1000 chassis, SCXI 1125 input module and SCXI 1320
    terminal.
I am using DAQ assistant in labview to obtain temperatures and store it in
a file. The experiments run the whole day and I need the whole data
generated during this time to be stored in a single file, but I am unable
to store it in a single file.
Can someone please give me some insight as to how can I achieve this?

    Hi Mr,
It would be helpful to see your code to see exactly how you are acquiring the data. Are you doing continuous buffered measurements? Or are you performing single point temperature measurements in a while loop?
Either way you will want to use the "write to spreadsheet" VI in your loop. Simply wire your data into the "write to spreadsheet" vi and se the "append to file" input to TRUE. This will make the data add on to the end of the file with each iteration of the loop. The "write to spreadsheet" VI is located in the file IO pallette in LabVIEW.
    Thanks,
    Sal

I am trying to build a DLL for the simple vi with LabVIEW and want to use the DLL in LabVIEW. is it impossible?
I wrote a vi and it have 2 terminals. one is the input for numeric dbl data type and one another is the output for numeric dbl 1D array data type.
It was built with the Application builder for LabVIEW 8.0 and DLL was created successfully.
I want to use this DLL in new vi with LabVIEW.
Call library function used. I wrote a new vi to use that DLL.
In config dialog I config each parameter for dll and connected terminals. but it doesn't work

At first I kept scratching my head wondering why someone would want to do this. Create a DLL in LabVIEW to call it from LabVIEW. Seems redundant. But, perhaps it's an exercise or perhaps it's for testing the DLL...
In any event, calling the DLL worked for me in 8.2. How are you configuring your Call LIbrary Function node? I have it set up as follows:
    return type: void
iteration: Numeric, Signed 32-bit Integer, pass by value
array1D2: array type, Signed 32-bit Integer, 1 dimension, "Array Data Pointer" format
len: Numeric, Signed 32-bit Integer, pass by value
Then I called the DLL like this:

you need to increment the "accumulator increment" during the duration of the chirp.  the "accumulator increment" controls the frequency of the DDS cycle.  by increasing it's value, you are increasing the frequency.  the math for increment values follows the same math as determining the frequency to increment value.

how can i use activeX Control in labview?
please describe me step by step.
    thanks.

Well..that was quite helpful..but now I'm encountering certain problems. I've attached the VI I've made.
I don't need sound at the moment so I dropped it. (Although I tried to play it..but all I could hear was a very annoying sound.) Secondly I don't want to display any date or time..so i dropped that property too.
Now when I run this Vi...the webcam turns on, the screen of videocapx pops up..then the webcam light goes off..and another pop up appears saying..labview is not responding..and i have to close it reluctantly.
I haven't placed the stop capture property in this vi. i checked it by placing it too..but that doesn't work.
I would like to notify that my actual task is to acquire image and then compare it with another one already present on my pc. I want you to please help me out..solve my first query then I'll proceed with the latter part.

  • How to measure voltage changes using a NI-9219 with strain gauges and use the data in labview

I am updating an old LabView/Data Acquisition system that uses strain gauges to measure two forces (normal and axial) as well as two moments (Pitch and Roll). I am having trouble reading the voltage changes over my strain gauges using my NI-9219 as well as filtering the data with both a lowpass and smoothing filter. The program attached has the project and should have all the sub-vi's used in the program. This program was written on LabView version 8.5 and is being updated to a 2013 version of LabView. Also, the hardware previously used was a combination of a NI SCB-68 and NI USB-6251. If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Coffeyfj,
Did you ever had this set up working? The first thing that I would do as I mentioned in the previous comment would be to use one of the LabVIEW examples. I recommended to you using the (strain - Continuous Input.vi). If you can read any voltage changes with the example vi, then we will know the problem we are having is in your code. If you cannot read any voltage changes using the example I mentioned, we can start trouble shooting the hardware connections. Are you connecting the excitation voltage? If yes, Are you making the right connections. Please refer to page 19 of the following document (half and full bridge modes)

  • How can I use USB interface in Labview?

    Hi.
Does labview allow to USB interface?
I have been seen allowing GPIB and RS232.
I'm beginer at Labview and wanna use USB interface for my target system and pc.
I wanna know how to labview interfaces from target system to pc.
And if Labview doesn't provide USB interface module, how can I use USB?
Is using a USB at Labview hard to beginer?
    Plz, answer to my quetion.
sorry, my English is very poor.
    thx for reading my article.

You can access devices connected to the USB port, but not in the same way as you would a GPIB or RS232 device. There are no USB drivers like there is VISA for GPIB or serial. Rather devices that plug into the USB appear to the systen as some sort of standard resource like a printer, disk drive or IO board. LabVIEW then interacts with these devices as it would any other device of the same type.Look at it this way, if you have a USB daq device you will access it through MAX the same as if it were a plugin card. • Can I use C code in labview?

Hello, I've got a fairly complicated program I've written in C that
requires two doubles to be passed to it and it spits out two integers
as a result of a very detailed calculation. Is there a way to have
labview call this C function? I've tried searching the NI.com website
but all I could find were examples where labview was being compared to
C in an attempt to show how they are equal. Any advice/links to
relevant information or tutorials would be greatly appreciated.

    You have two possibilities:
Compile your C code into a DLL and call it with "Call Library Function Node".
    Use the "Code Interface Node".
The LabVIEW Bookshelf (under help) contains a PDF document name "Using external code in LabVIEW". It will probably answer all your questions. Good luck

  • Controling wheelchair by speech command using Neuron Network in labview

    Hi all,
I'm doing project about "controling wheelchair  by speech command using neuron network in labview". I found some informations about controling whelchair combine with function microsoft speech recognition in window or something like that but this was not my point. So, I have some question about that:
    1) How do I store the command "Left-Right-Back-Go-Stop" in labview. After that, analyzing to find the differences of characteristic of these command.
    2) Based on these characteristic above, using neuron network to find exactly command.
Are there anyone do like this before? I need all help from you.
    Thank you so much.

    Greetings;
First, it is most excellent that you have gotten to where you can compare the words being said to the sample.
If I understand correctly, you are interested in continuously acquiring sound, saving it and then comparing it with the sample? That is not as straightforward as it sounds simply because it would be difficult to realize when there is sound in the first place and when that sound is relevant.
I would probably start by figuring out whether there is or not sound by comparing the microphone input to a certain threshold, saving if there is sound, and then halting the recording when the sound stops. It would be then that you would compare with your samples via the algorithm that you have made.
In order to check for volume, I came across the following example:
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/2150
It was mentioned in the following discussion:

  • Using Shared Memory in LabVIEW

I'm trying to use shared memory with LabVIEW. Can I use it, a DLL in C with LabWIEW for use shared Memory?

    Lidia,
Check these out (for memory mapping):
    http://exchange.ni.com/servlet/ProcessRequest?RHIVEID=101&RPAGEID=135&HOID=5065000000080000006A1D0000&UCATEGORY_0=_318_&UCATEGORY_S=0&USEARCHCONTEXT_QUESTION_0=build+cvi+shared+dll&USEARCHCONTEXT_QUESTION_S=0

But in general you don't need to use this when you use dll's. It is used to
share data between different processes. If you need LabVIEW data in a dll,
try to pass it as a pointer to an array, or as a string pointer.
