Using X3500 as a Wireless Extender DHCP issue iPhone 6

Hopefully a simple question with a simple answer.
Background:
I've transitioned away from my ADSL ISP to a cable provider (VirginMedia). My new ISP comes with a cable modem (SuperHub 2 ac) and I've connected the two devices together to extend my home wireless network. The cable modem is The two routers are physically remote from each other - connected via just their Ethernet ports - via power-line technology (Devolo dLAN 1200+). The two routers have the same broadcast SSID albeit on separate channels.
Issue:
All devices in my house, laptops tablets, phones roam between the two wi-fi zones seamlessly *except* the iPhone 6 (iOS8.1), this works on the cable modem wi-fi - but not on the X3500 wi-fi. I also have an iPad Mini 2 (also iOS8.1) which also works - so rightly / wrongly I've ruled out iO8.1 as the issue. Oddly the iPhone 6 connects to the x3500 but doesn't obtain an IP address (the cable modem is the DHCP server). Even setting a static IP address doesn't help.
Observation(s):
If the X3500 is setup as a DHCP server, the iPhoen connects (and gets an IP address), but then the default gateway is incorrect (gatway is the IP address of the X3500 not the remote cable modem). I can't find anywhere to specify a default gateway in the setup.
Question
I'm beginning to think this is an issue with the iPhone 6 (knowing all other devices work correctly), but I just want to make sure I'm configuring the X3500 correctly. I'm specifically interested in the whether I'm using the right "Mode"ADSL / Ethernet. I've tried "Bridged Mode Only" (ADSL) and "Automatic DCHP Only" (Ethernet) but neither seem to resolve the issue that the iPhone 6 is having.
any suggestions on how to resolve / troubleshoot would be most welcomed.

Yes, there's a way for you to override the IP Address. It is on Router Address under Network Setup on the Basic Setup tab. If I'm not mistaken, one end of the Ethernet cable should be connected to the regular Ethernet port of the cable modem and the other end to the cable port of the X3500.
But if it's just the iPhone that won't connect to the X3500, it might be okay to retain the current configuration of the router, but try adjusting the wireless security mode or set the wireless channel to 11 and observe what happens.

    Unfortunateley the mac mini seems to have a wireless range of about 10cm !! Everything else ( an Apple tv, imac, pc laptop, wii, gameboys ) works with the wireless network from upstairs apart from the mac mini.
    What I want to do is place the airport express upstairs and connect the mac mini to it, either wirelessley or wired.
    I have run through the airport express setup using the imac and the mini using all combinations of options with no success.
    The install and instructions seems very orientated to assuming that you have an airport extreme.
    Does anyone know how to setup the express as a wireless extender (WDS) on a netgear wireless router ?

    First, I would ascertain, whether or not, the Netgear supports DD-WRT or if the manufacturer's supports WDS on this model. If the answer is no for either of these, then there would be little chance of success trying to create a WDS between these two.
    Unfortunately, I have not come across any specific WDS set up instructions between these two devices on the Internet to offer, as most likely, no one has been successful in making this work.

  • Extending Wireless Network - DHCP Issues

    I have an Airport Extreme 802.11n and I want to extend the range of it with my Airport Express 802.11n. I found the "Designing Airport Networks Using Airport Utility" from the Apple support page. "Extending the Range of an 802.11n Network" on page 46 says to manually set up. Under "wireless" when I check the box to "Allow this network to be extended" I get a dialog box that says, Correct the 2 problems below before updating this Apple device. Those problems are DHCP Beginning Address 10.0.1.2 and DHCP Ending Address 10.0.1.200. The Airport Extreme has the IP Address of 10.0.1.33. It says the DHCP range you have entered conflicts with the WAN IP address of your wireless device. If I limit the beginning address to start at 10.0.1.34 should that solve my issue? Any help is appreciated.

    Sorry but I should have read your original post closer.
    Since you already have a router distributing IP addresses, you don't need the AEBS doing that. Configure your AEBS so that it is acting as a bridge (not sharing a single IP address).

  • Guest Wireless Tunnelling - DHCP Issue

    Hi,
    I'm attempting to implement Guest Anchor tunnelling between two WLC's but I've run into an odd issue I cannot find a clear answer to.
    We have two 5508 WLC's, both Running 7.4.100.0.
    The Guest Anchor Controller obviously resides in a DMZ, it's functionality has been proven by connecting an AP directly to it, and connecting the the guest WLAN.
    The two controllers have been configured as Mobility Peers, the Mobility Tunnel between them is up (mping and eping both successful, status is up).
    The Guest WLAN has been replicated on both controllers, I have set the Mobility Anchor on the WLAN. The Guest Anchor has itself as the mobility anchor and the Internal Controller has the Guest Anchor set.
    DHCP is provided by the Guest Anchor's internal DHCP Server. DHCP Proxy is enabled on both Controllers, with the Option 82 format set to AP-MAC. Both Controllers WLAN settings are set to DHCP Server Override, pointed to the Management IP of the Guest Anchor and DHCP Addr. Assignment required.
    The problem I'm experiencing is with connecting clients through the Internal WLC. The Client Associates to the Internal WLC and obtains a lease from the Guest Anchor and connects to the network. A few seconds later the client is dessociated from the internal controller. On every subsequent connection attempt, the client does not recieve a response to it's DHCP Requests, and hence ends up with an apipa address.
    The Message logs on two controllers return the following errors:
    INTERNAL CONTROLLER:
    *apfReceiveTask: Jun 27 14:03:25.839: #APF-4-HANDOFF_END_RCVD: apf_mm.c:1626 Handoff end received in wrong role (peer Ip: 0.0.0.0, sender:GUEST_ANCHOR_IP, Role:0) for mobile Client_MAC
    GUEST ANCHOR CONTROLLER:
    *DHCP Server: Jun 27 14:03:14.466: #DHCP-4-REQIP_NOT_PRESENT: dhcpd.c:559 Received a packet without a requested ip!.
    Has anyone else seen similar behaviour? Does anyone have an ideas what might be causing this?

    Thanks for the reply.
    The Guest WLAN on the Internal Controller is Anchored to the WLC in the DMZ. The Guest Anchor is anchored to itself.
    There are only two controllers in the configuration, so breaking off one of the Anchors isn't really an option.
    I have tested the Guest Anchor as a Standalone WLC by connecting an AP directly to it, in that configuration DHCP works as expected.

  • Can I use a NETGEAR WRG614v6 as a wireless extender for my AE?

    My modem is connected up to my AExpress but the signal is weak around some parts of the house. I have an old NETGEAR WRG614v6 router and was wondering wether i could use this as a wireless extender or repeater and have it just plugged into the power, no DSL cables in it, just sharing the AE's signal. Is this possible to do or am I better off buying another AE or even an extreme? I've searched all forums possible to try and help me and even tried YouTube but had no luck so far. Can anyone help or tell me how to do this?

    According to wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WirelessDistributionSystem) your netgear doesn't support WDS, which is needed to extend a network
    Your cheapest bet would be to buy another AX and extend it that way...

    Can I use an Airport Extreme to extend the range of my wireless modem?
    At one end of my house I have a dual band wireless ADSL modem which provides my internet connection and I want to extend (improve) the wireless coverage to the other of the hosue where my Apple TV (2nd gen) is located. I have being trying to extend my wireless network with an Airport Extreme but so far without success. I can get the Airport to join the wireless network, but I suspect that it is only acting as another client and not actually extending the wireless range. There is a setting in the Airport configuration to "extend and existing network", however when I choose this option the Airport no longer connects to my existing wireless network and I am beginning to suspect that this fuction only works with another Apple device (Airport Extreme or Express).
    Has anyone been able to extend the range of a third party wireless router / modem with an AirPort Extreme? If so, any advice that you can offer wold be appreciated.

    Your answer has confirmed my suspicions.
    Option 1 from your suggested solutions is not a goer because the modem and Airport Extreme are in different parts of the house making it impractical to run a cable between the two devices. 
    I did try option 2 and bought a Netgear range extender, which according to Netgear it would work with my D-Link modem - not.
    However I have managed to work around the problem (sort of) by using the Airport Extreme to create a wireless network between my iMac 27 and my Apple TV. The idea is that the iMac will act as a router between ethernet connected ADSL modem and the wirelessly connected Apple TV.
    The good news is that I am now able to play the content from my iTunes library on my Apple TV without interruptions due to a poor wireless connection . Although the connection from the Apple TV to the internet is not working I think this is most likely just a configuration issue and for me it is not really a show stopper.

  • Can I use a Time Capsule to extend my wireless network.

    Hi, I have just bought a 3TB time capsule as my old (flat style) 500GB TC is reaching full capacity. The old style TC will then be surplus to requirements as a data storage unit, at least for myself, though it might be useful for my son to use as his Time Capsule.
    Ideally, as we have a wireless 'blind spot' out in the rear extension of the house, it would be useful to use the unit to extend my wireless network (and also use it as a separate TC if possible). Is this possible? If it is how would I go about it?

    Is it possible for you to consider connecting the Time Capsules together using a wired Ethernet connection?
    Here is what Apple has to say in their support document about extending:
    Adding Wi-Fi base stations when it is unnecessary can reduce Wi-Fi throughput because the Wi-Fi network will require more data management overhead. The network configuration also becomes more complex. In the case of a wirelessly extended network, throughput may be reduced to less than 60 percent of that of a single device. The general rule is to keep the Wi-Fi network as simple as possible. You can accomplish this by using the minimum number of Wi-Fi base stations required to service the physical network area and by using Ethernet wherever possible.
    Extending the range of your Wi-Fi network by connecting Wi-Fi base stations together using Ethernet is always the best option, and will provide the best throughput.

  • Can you use a roaming network and wireless extender at same time?

    Greetings community - I've been struggling with an attempt to extend my wireless network for some time now. Please forgive my ignorance on the topic - I realize how 'simple' this is for many of you.  Let me summarize:
    What I have functioning:
    1. Comcast telephony modem
    2. 5th gen Airport Extreme as main wireless router connected to modem via Ethernet (corner of floor 3)
    3. 2nd gen Airport Express as wireless extender (hooked to a stereo on floor 2)
    What I want to accomplish:
    1. I have poor wireless signal on my sun porch (corner of floor 1 opposite side of building as modem)
    Extra equipment I have:
    1. Another 5th gen Airport Extreme
    2. Another 2nd gen Airport Express
    What I have tried (and failed at):
    1. Initially I set up the second Airport Extreme as a second wireless extender and placed it at a further point away than my first wireless extender.  I quickly realized that set up does not function appropriately and one cannot connect to the further extender (I read about that on the apple forums).
    2. I tried placing the second Airport Extreme in a different part of the house at equal distance from the main router as the first wireless extender.  It's capability to extend was minimal if any.
    3. I tried connecting the Airport Extreme to the main router via an Ethernet cable with the hopes of creating a roaming network (which I read about on the apple forums). I would have to come up with a way to run the Ethernet through the house but I'm willing to cross that bridge later.  Once I got that set up, the 2nd gen Airport Express which was previously set up as a wireless extender is no longer recognized. Argh!!
    Questions/Theories/Suggestions:
    1. Is it possible to have a wired extender (via Ethernet) function at the same time as a separate wireless extender all connected to the same router?  If so how do I do it?
    2. I thought about keeping Airport Extreme #1 wireless connected to Airport Express #1 and call that Network 1.  Then plug Airport Extreme #2 directly into the modem to create Network #2 and use Airport Express #2 as wireless extender.  When I tried plugging both Airport Extremes into the modem, they both stopped functioning.
    3. Do I get a second modem to put somewhere else in the house and use Airport Extreme #2 and Airport Express #2 in that fashion?  My guess is Comcast will try to charge me a separate internet access fee to do that (boo!!).
    I know there are a lot of brilliant folks out there.  I'm sure someone can read this and see the 'obvious errors' in my ideas and attempts.  I'm certainly open to new suggestions as well.

    Is is possible to rename the AEx 2 a different network name from the AEx1 and AE 1 (even though they are all connected to each other)? And say it is possible, would that potentially preventing the jumping?
    No, in extend wireless the names must be the same..
    However since you are creating a network on AE2 which is extended by AEx2 then you can indeed use a different name.. but it must be both,, AE2 and AEx2.
    2. Even more crazy - if I did (could) give the AEx 2 a different network name, could I use my AE 2 as a wireless extension to that second network?  Or is this just getting out of hand now?
    You have lost me now.. there are ways and means.. but let me recommend a better solution.
    Use EOP (homeplug in US) adapters if you cannot run ethernet. Multi-storey houses where you have heavy concrete construction are never going to work well with wireless alone. You are much better getting ethernet properly installed (which is the only 100% guaranteed method).. or buy a set of EOP adapters and give them a try.. they work in some cases and not others.. but better than wireless when they do work.
    Otherwise I think you need higher power wireless routers.. but I can suggest you do the setup in a more controlled manner.
    In other words do not use auto as per the airport utility.. use very short wireless names, different for both bands.. and fixed wireless channels.. then test which band works better.. Then you can do a link.. which will be slow but might give you better performance.
    So..
    Link1 Main AE1---- AEx1 This is wireless extend.
    Link2 AEx1--ethernet--AE2. AE2 is in bridge mode and is also set to create a wireless network. (Use different wireless name here to prevent confusion).
    Link3 AE2-----AEx2 Second wireless extend.
    This overcomes the Apple limitation on multiple extends. It is not great setup but might get wireless to where you need it.. And better speed than you can get now.
    NOTE>. I would personally never do this.. I will run ethernet forevermore.. having tried and tried in various places and using all kinds of equipment.. my conclusion is.. wireless is not suitable.. unless you can get enough signal in from one AP.. everything behind it must be ethernet.
    It is much more expensive in some cases.. but ethernet works.. nothing else can be guaranteed to work.

    I have been trying to extend my wireless network in my house.  Right now I have a dsl modem/router provided by Century Link and an older AirPort express (not sure how old but it uses AirPort utility v5.6).  I want to be able to share my printer and use AirTunes.  Currently I have the AirPort plugged into the router and setup to create a new wireless network.  I would like to combine them so I don't have to switch between to print and play music.  I am not really sure where to start or if it even possible.  Any info would be great!

    If you keep the Express connected using Ethernet and configure the Express to "Create a wireless network" using exactly the same wireless network name, exact same wireless security and same wireless password as the Century Link network.....everything will behave as one "big" network, and you will have additional wireless coverage near the Express.
    If you do not need extra wireless coverage, you can turn off the wireless on the Express.
    The Express must be in Bridge Mode.
    Most users know the name of their wireless network and password, so the really tricky part of doing this is that you must know exactly what type of wireless security settings the Century Link router is using....and then match up the same settings on the AirPort Express.
    If the settings do not match up exactly, then you wind up with two separate networks that will each require their own log on.
    If you can check the setting for wireless security on the Century Link router and provide that information to us, we can tell you how to set things up the way that you would like.

For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb. These terrible download speed really only affects the iPhones as my MacBook Pro usually gets the good speed no matter where it is. I don't believe there is anything wrong with my phone because if I am in the part of the house that uses just the extreme the download speeds on the iphone goes up to 50-75mb. As a note I have an AirPort Extreme on the top floor of my house (second floor) that's where my modem is located. On the first floor that's where one airport express is located. I also have another airport express in the basement that is accessed by my landlord. Any thoughts on how to fix this would be helpful.

    It appears that your networking goals with the AirPort Express is to use it as a wireless Ethernet bridge instead of using it to extend the wireless range of your AirPort Extreme. The latter requires that the Express Wi-Fi radios be enabled.
    If you intended to use the Express as a wireless bridge, you just need to reconfigure it to "Join a wireless" network instead of "Extend a wireless network."
    For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb.
    In an extended network, the placement of the extending base station is critical as it can only extend the wireless network at the bandwidth at which it receives it.

    Can I use AirPort Extreme as a wireless extender ? I own a Time Capsule and want to extend my wireless network using the AirPort Extreme just because both have wifi AC. Also, does the AirPort Extreme need to be hook up via Ethernet if I extend

    The problem with extending using a wireless connection between the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme is this.......
    The extender can only "extend" the speed of signal that it receives. The signal starts to lose speed as soon as it leaves the Time Capsule, and the signal will lose quite a bit of speed as it passes through the ceiling due to the thick construction. The ceiling presents what is known as "interference" to the wireless signal.
    So, the signal has slowed somewhat by the time that it reaches an AirPort Extreme that would be installed on the main floor.  That AirPort Extreme acting as an extender can make the signal that it receives go further, but it cannot make it go faster.  A better term than "extender" really might be "repeater".
    If you install an AirPort Extreme on the main floor, the signal upstairs will be stronger than it is now, and depending on how many obstructions there are between the AirPort Extreme and the upstairs area, the signal may be noticeably faster upstairs than it is now as well.
    With wireless connections between devices, there are always so many compromises and variables involved that it is just not possible to predict what the actual performance might be in your home until you try things out in your home. For that reason, it is always a good idea to understand the store's return policy in advance in case a new item does not deliver the performance that you are hoping to achieve.
    Now, let's say that you are able to pull an Ethernet cable from the Time Capsule to the main floor, and the AirPort Extreme is connected there in a nice, central location. Then, you could expect to receive about the same performance on the main floor that you receive in the basement, since the AirPort Extreme is receiving a full speed signal over the Ethernet cable from the Time Capsule. You can run an Ethernet cable about 330 feet, or about 100 meters with virtually no signal loss.
    The performance upstairs will improve as well, since the AirPort Extreme has a full speed signal to broadcast....not the slower speed signal that would receive from the Time Capsule if it connects using wireless.
    If you want to achieve the same type of performance upstairs that you have in the basement and main floor, then you will need to pull an additional Ethernet cable up to the upstairs floor and add another AirPort there.
    That would probably be the "best" wireless network system that you could install if you are looking at all the options. Few of us are lucky enough to be able to install the "best" network, but those that are receive remarkable wireless performance in return for their investment.

    Yes, in fact I do not believe that there is a way to turn them "off", even if you want to.
    However, sometimes users will get the extending device configured to "join a wireless network". The Ethernet port are not enabled in that configuration.
    Try connecting another computer or Ethernet device if you can to verify that things are working.

    Unfortunately it is not possible to extend wireless networks with the WRT54GS since it doesn't have bridging capability. You can however run a cable to it and set it as an access point. Here's how:

    Apple's "extend a wireless network" function appears to be a proprietary feature that works only with other Apple AirPort routers. As far as we know, this feature is not compatible with devices from other manufacturers.
    It would be extremely unlikely that the Express could do what you want, but some things are never known until  you try.

    Temporarily connecting your AirPort Express to one of the Time Capsule's Etherent LAN <-> ports...as LaPastenagure suggests....is always a good way to setup and configure other network devices.
    If you want to configure the Express using wireless, remember that the Express broadcasts a default wireless signal with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx. You must log on to this network first....no password is required....then open AirPort Utility to "see" the AirPort Express.
