Using Xquartz/X11 in Mavericks

Just upgraded to Mavericks (10.9) and realized that the applications requiring X11 couldn't find it. By re-installing Xquartz everything is back up and running

I found this work-around, create a small script for where ever you want to open a xquartz window:
Start Xquartz and then run the following script in the first Xterm window
This script opens a light-green window on a monitor to left of my laptop
#!/bin/ksh
# ------------------Down from top-------------------|
# ------------------In from left edge------------|  |
# ------------------# of charcters High------|   |  |
# ------------------# of charcters Wide--|   |   |  |
if [[ ${TERM} = "xterm" ]]; then
  /opt/X11/bin/xterm -fn 6x12 -geometry 120x60+810+20  -sl 1500 -vb -bg lightgreen &
else
   echo "This is not a X-Window . . . . "
echo "   PLEASE start Xquartz and restart your script from the X11 window."
fi
I use a variation of this to open 60 small windows at the same time on 60 different systems on a 30 inch monitor for password changes.

iPhoto is appearing as free on MAC store and it is also featured as one of the top 10 free apps, when i downloaded it, my credit card got charged for 790 rupees. I am using the latest OSX Maverick.

And yet to download the app you clicked on a button that told you that the app would be 790 rupees for you.
The iLife apps and the iWork apps are only free when you qualify to get them free. And when you get them free the buy button to download them says free. When the buy button has a price on it, that is how much you will pay for the app.

  • When I check my boot SSD drive using Disk Utility under Mavericks, I often get "Incorrect number of extended attributes" errors.  But if I boot off an external drive and check the same SSD, no errors are reported.  Is this a bug in Mavericks?

When I check my boot SSD drive using Disk Utility under Mavericks, I often get "Incorrect number of extended attributes" errors.  But if I boot off an external drive and check the same SSD, no errors are reported.
This happens not just with the SSD in my Mac Mini, but with another SSD in my MacBook (both now running Mavericks).  So far as I know, all of the kit I am using is in good order (despite the file corruption reports).  So I am beginning to wonder if it could be due to a bug in Mavericks?  Both SSD drives have been formatted to MacOS Extended (journaled) format.  Should I have used a different format, I wonder?
Has anyone else encountered this issue?
    Does anyone have a solution?
Or an explanation that might help my investigation of the issue?
    Thanks guys,

I understand that the Corsair Force 3 is not one of the SSD drives that are supported on Apple Macs.
I did try downloading and using Trim Enabler, but the error message came up both when it was off and when it was on.
I understand that not everyone thinks Trim Enabler is a good program, though there is a new version out now, so I may give it another try.

  • How can i use MS word with MAVERICK

how can i use MS word with MAVERICK?  None of the MS Office applications work with new IOS!!!

What version of Microsoft Office Mac are you running?  You probably just need to update it to the latest release:

Office 2011 Mac's latest version is 14.3.8 for instance.

I always run a Time Machine backup before updating anything and recommend you run a backup as well. Paid apps should migrate over without any problem. If you have problems with VPP codes not transfering over properly, you can talk to your Apple SE or contact VPP for Education support and they can help you. While I haven't experienced any problems with updating, its never a guarantee that others will have the same experience.
    Good luck!

I'm trying to figure out how I can see the equation of the line on the graph I just created. I'm using the OS X Mavericks version of  Numbers.

I think what you're looking for is this. Click chart and in the Series tab under Trendlines you select linear and check Show Equation.
Unfortunately you can't move the equation from its initial position the way you could with the old Numbers 2.3.

If you own any verson of iPhoto '11 then there is a free update to version 9.5.x in the App store
If you own a previous version of iPhto (iPhoto '09 or earlier) then as always an upgrade to a new version (in this case iPhoto '11) is a paid upgrade and you purchase it in the App store
and no OS update/upgrade contains a version of iPhto - it is a seperate program and although it is included as part of every new Mac it is not a free program and never has been sinve version 1 or 2 (I forget when it changes)

  • Not happy using two screens in Mavericks.  If I leave an image spanning two screens half of the image disappears

Not happy using two screens in Mavericks.  If I leave an image spanning two screens half of the image disappears.

So Apple really didn't fix the additional screen issues then, bummers.
The price of this feature is the loss of the aforementioned nerd-impressing ability to have windows that span multiple displays.  In Mavericks, a window can span screens while being dragged, but it will appear partially transparent on the destination screen until the cursor touches the edge of the screen from which the window is being dragged, at which point the opaqueness will switch sides.  Releasing the window mid-drag leaves it visible only on the screen where it's opaque.

  • Anyone have a report on using iBank 5 with Maverick?

I have a Mac with 10.9.4 and am looking for a personal finance, money management system that can track my spending by category and below category to merchant.
    Thanks for any help.

I use iBank 5 with Mavericks. They have a standard report template named "Category Detail" which will show your spending by category and within each category by payee. That is a report I use all of the time and it works very well. I am very happy with iBank. The only negative thing I can think to say about it is that I was previously a Quicken user and iBank does things just enough differently from Quicken that it took some getting used to -- but that would be true if I was going the other direction also. If you buy from their website there is a 30 day free trial: http://www.iggsoftware.com/ibank/
