Very Angry DVD Archiver!!

Hi!
I'm sure I wrote something about this before.
I archive quite abit of stuff onto DVD.
After I do this I then list the archive with DiskTracker. (I mention this to prove the point that the DVD actually mounted sometime in it's life).
Now I find that the DVD when inserted into either my G5 or G4 doesn't get recognised.
I know that there is a great deal of issues with specific brands, but I have 10 archives all not mounting. Even if a DVD was faulty, to expect 10 of the same brand not to mount is absurd.
Can anyone suggest a way to force the computer to open these volumes? I will try them on a PC to see if that will work, but I have had a progressive number of problems like this with the Apple DVD drive. Is there no firmware or something that can resolve the silly issue. As I said previously they once mounted, and I need if I have to to get the information off so that I can put them on another DVD. This is rediculous!!
Help please?
Thanks in advance

Note, there are a variety of DVD formats which may or may not be readable by your specific DVD drive. In Mac OS X, you can tell which is readable by viewing the info on the drive in the System Profiler. Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info brings that up.
To avoid problems with reading DVDs:
1. Do not label the disks themselves.
2. Purchase DVDs prepackaged in jewelcases.
3. Use only 4.7 GB DVD-R media unless you know your drives support other DVD formats such as DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, and DL formats.
4. Burn at next maximum speed, and not maximum speed.
5. Some DVD drives do have firmware updates as you surmise, but they are model specific and don't apply to all DVD drives. Search DVD Firmware Update on http://www.apple.com/support/
Most of these will help support 4X DVDs where they might not be otherwise supported.

    Hello
I don't know who to complain to as you do not appear to have a complaints department, despite searching the web, I trust you can pass this to relevant department for action, as I'm very angry over my recent repair.
Following my issue relating to a blank screen 2 weeks ago, your advisor arranged for my iMac to collected by Amsys, for repair and return, this was done and it was returned to me last Tuesday, onWednesday I set up my iMac again and instantly realised I had problems, much worse than before. I called Amsys to inform them of the issue of the computer being very very slow and unable to open iPhoto and pages, and document listing would not show up, plus I had no sound on the mac. They informed me that they had only replaced the video card and what they had done would have not affected the computers performance. He suggested I reinstall OSX again which I did, but this made no difference to the programs, so I called you.
Your technician on the phone was very good as they have always been, and made an appointment for me to go into the Milton Keynes Apple store the next day at 1 pm, which I did.
The gentleman on the Genius Bar was very good and was able to run tests on the iMac in my presence, and diagnosed immediately an issue with the sound problem, and advised me that this could not be fixed while I wait and I would need to leave it for repair. I made him aware of the previous repair, and he was able to see via your system, the list of logged issues I have had with this since purchasing in September 2012. I'm sure you can see from the way you record all calls and issues the problems I have had.
Today I called to ask if my iMac would soon be ready for collection, I was told the repairs had been completed and it was being tested. However to my dismay, I learned of another serious issue relating to the repair carried out by Amsys. I was informed that 6 screws were missing from the the iMac internally, which caused me much distress and concern, they also told me I had to wait even longer as the screws had to be ordered and installed on arrival before I could collect it.
My issues here are: I trusted the Amsys repairer as it was arranged and recommend by you, it is very evident they are not competent to repair, as they have caused more problems with my iMac on its return, despite enclosing a checklist, fully ticked showing everything working well, it clearly wasn't ! Plus the issue of missing parts (screws) during the repair, I have already expressed my disgust with Amsys, by email and had a response, within the hour, apologising and told me they were looking into this.
This where I stand on this, I have not had my iMac for  almost two weeks and I do not know when I will get it back. I'm also very worried about what other damage has been caused by Amsys and the quality of my iMac now. I want to know what you, Apple is going to do about this ? I have already been very inconvenienced by this and until now I have been a very loyal apple customer with 2 iPads, and 4 iPhones in our household, not to mention the iMac.
I feel I have been very let down by this experience, on my iMac, which cost a lot of money, I have also lost a lot of money with lost work and unable to carry out my business without it, and I will be seeking compensation.
I trust you will take this complaint seriously and pass it to the relevant department for action.
    Yours sincerely
    Des Withey

I have turned off, removed apps, tried to reinstall them. iTunes can't download them either, the updates for them won't work.
Never had problems with iPhones until now and this has really annoyed me... Apps have cost me money have had to go because they won't function
the error messages say that data cannot be downloaded at this time and it is ot because I do not have free space because I have removed items to make sure there is room!

  • House Move Disaster - from a very angry customer

I am currently experiencing a disastrous home move scenario.
My original BT order was due to go live on 10-Aug-2010.
Suspiciously, the telephone number I was given was for a 01202 88****** which is the area I had just moved from. The new area should always begin with 01202 6*****.
When the order was activated - it was for my old address! I called on the 10th, 11th, 12th and each time I spoke to the foreign call centre I asked specifically to verify the address for the phone number. Each time they told me it was my new address until on the 13th August, for some reason they admitted it was for my old address.
The call centre agents were scripted and their responses were not truthful. Each day they told me 'the fault with the line' will be fixed within 24 hours. it was not, because the fault was that BT had activated a phone number at an incorrect address.
The Open Reach Engineer called me on the 13th and within about 30 seconds - he clarified that there was no line fault but that the telephone number was active at my old address.
Why couldn't the call centre staff verify the address of my telephone line - when I specifically questioned it each time I spoke to them?
After another call to BT on the 13th to make an official complaint - they told me that the complaint was logged and that I would receive a call from a manager within 24 hours. 7 days later I have not been contacted. (even afteranother call to BT, chasing this)
I was left with no choice but to effectively start again and place a new order for a BT line for my new address. This was due to go live yesterday, 18th August. I have been given a 01202 6***** telephone number and the order is now complete....however...it still is not working.
When I try to dial out, I have a dialling tone but before I have finished dialling the number I get a "The number you have dialled has not been recognised" message.Even when trying to route the call through BT with 1280 first. When calling my BT telephone number from my mobile it just rings and rings but the actual BT phone at my new address does not ring.
The last week and a half has shown me that the BT support structure (for me) has been inefficient, poor quality and incompetent.
An engineer is coming tomorrow to check the line when I hope the fault can at last be resolved.
I will be seeking compensation from BT for this.

The comments our your website are obviously a blatant lie!
"Move with less stress. Moving your BT services is quick and easy. Find out how to move with less stress."
It would also appear I am not the only dissatisfied customer.
    http://community.bt.com/t5/Phones/House-Move-Disaster-from-a-very-angry-customer/td-p/39557
In light of BTs further incompetence, I have today cancelled my direct debit to BT. If this matter does not get resolved today, I will no longer be a BT customer and will not be liable for any charges for any "service" after the 20th of July 2010.
I have still not had my old phone number allocated back - in fact I am now on a completely different number to what was initially allocated. 01282 77****. Another **** up?
To make matters even worse, I have today received a bill on a different account number for "services" up to October. LC******. My last bill paid on account number GB******* stats I have paid until 17th October.
This also shows that my phone plan has been changed from Unlimited Anytime to Weekend - I assume this will incur call charges that I will not be liable for.
I can only assume that the initial person I spoke to on or around the 10th of July set me up as a new customer, not a customer moving house. I will let you do your own investigation why this happened and who the member of staff was, after all, "calls are recorded for staff training"!
If this matter is not resolved by 5pm today, 23rd August, you can cancel all contracts I hold with BT and I will also be seeking a refund on my payment on account GB*******. The bill received today on account LC***** will not be being paid.
I will of course pay for any calls made outside of the Unlimited Anytime plan - these I am liable for.
I require this matter to be passed to a member of staff at management level, and as said above, this must be resolved by 5pm today. 6 weeks is too long and I am no longer prepared to put up with this level of service. I will be switching suppliers at 5pm today, as 2 family members have already easily switched from BT to TT, without one little bit of fuss.
I can be contacted via email or my mobile. 07803 143***.
    Regards,
    Matthew Harrison

  • DVD archival storage

Is there a best brand/type of DVD for archival storage of digital video? Secondly, I'm using a Sony DVD recorder to transfer old Hi8 analog tapes to DVD (since it cannot be done with iMovie). What DVD format should I use to then play and edit on my iMac20?

DVD's and archival storage is really much like an oxymoron. They are not reliable for this purpose. Tape is the very best archival medium, but since you don't have that option, I would suggest you look for Taiyo Yuden DVD-R media.
The common DVD format is MPEG2, for which you will need MPEGStreamclip (freeware) and Apple's QuickTime MPEG2 plug-in ($20.00) to work it in iMovie.
You could make all your requirements (archive, play and edit) much simpler if you bought yourself a miniDV cam and shelve the DVD cam.

  • Not reading older DVD archive

I use DVD backup, after upgrading to maverick my DVDs started having .fpbf extension on them. Now many of my backed up DVDs show up as empty, untitled DVDs - What's up.   The DVDs show up on my desktop as  untitled.fpbf

I've already erased the upper/lower thing, still doesn't work
I don't count with an externeal TOSHIBA dvd drive, is any brand useful?
I'm in Argentina and official technical service is very expensive, can I configurate my external hard disk (made out of an internal disk and a case with usb connection) to replace the internal hidden volume or the dvd recover disk? in the system configuration, it appears as a "description: local fixed disk"
    thanks everyone!

  • Very large DVD image/folder ( dvd9 in size)

I'm having problems making an bluray folder or image that is readable by anything!, (using encore).
So In encore i changed the project format to DVD and set the disc size to custom = 20G !
My mediaplayer (popcorn hour) did play it OK, incl first-play, menus and subtitles, but i wonder if anyone else have experience with generating DVD image or folder which are large than dvd9 ?
(obviously you can not burn it, but who does that nowadays anyway)
    /per

..to answer my own question: the 20G 'DVD' played very well...
now I wonder if the player wil accept H264 encoding instead of MPEG2
..if so, i guess the only difference to bluray would be the lack of popup menus ?

  • Why is DVD fuzzy made via iMovie,Media browser, iDVD at professional quality.  Original photos very sharp, DVD fuzzy.

I made an iMovie from very sharp photos, moved it to iDVD via Media Browser, Made "Professional Quality" DVD in iDVD.  When I play the DVD back on eiher my iMac oxs 10.7.5 "DVDPlayer" or my DVD player hooked to my Sony TV set, the resulting movie from the DVD is unsharp, very fuzzy and very disappointing.  I am using Memorex DVD-R discs.  The playback colors of the made DVD are also changed from the original photos I used from i Photo.
Is this normal to loose so much sharpness and clarity in going from iPhoto to iMovie to iDVD?

    Hi
OR the long long answer is something like this:
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD.
They drop every second line in the picture.
Go via Media Browser (and then use MEDIUM - as HD does get a BAD Scale down quality) or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
    - iDVD - set Burn Speed in iDVD Pref. / Advance - BEST IS NOT BEST - x2 or max x4
    - Roxio™ - set in burn process
    - Disk Util tool - set in burn process
    BEST IS NOT BEST
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
to get this to work I
Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
Use Verbatim DVD-R (absolutely no +/-RW)
Set down burn speed to x4 - less burn errors = plays on more devices
No other process running in background as - ScreenSaver, EnergySaver OR TIMEMACHINE etc
and I'm very careful on what kind of video-codecs, audio file format and photo file formats I use
and I consider the iDVD Bug - never go back to video-editor to change/up-date - if so Start  a brand new iDVD project
Chapters set as they should - NO one at very beginning and no one in any transition or within 2 sec from it
Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !
Try to break the process up into two stages
Save as a DiskImage (calculating part)
Burn from this .img file (burning stage)
To isolate where the problem starts.
Another thing is - Playing it onto a Blu-Ray Player. My PlayStation3 can play BD-disks but not all of my home made DVDs so to get this to work I
Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
Use Verbatim DVD-R (absolutely no +/-RW)
Set down burn speed to x4 - less burn errors = plays on more devices

Chapters set as they should - NO one at very beginning and no one in any transition or within 2 sec from it
Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk for SD-Video Quality and about 4 - 5 times more - if it is a HD-Project.
No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
Do not have more external devices connected as is of urgent need. Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - Or to be disconnected/turned off
Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo
First - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set pointer to this
Secondly - turns on screen saver
Then - to show that it has nothing to show
No File Vault on - Important
NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
Lot's of icons on DeskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
if a project is in a real hurry
First - Then Start a new User-Account and
Then - log into this and iMovie get's faster too
And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery
    Yours Bengt W

  • DVD Archive = COMPRESSED FILES

To be certain, I follwed the explicit iTunes 6, multi-page procedure to find that I CANNOT archive the material I purchased from Itunes "Music Store" on a DVD.
What one gets is a compressed m4p file and NOT an AIFF file, thus the archive isn't a valid, full file of the purchased material. It is a compressed facimile.
This is the result of three DAYS of effort, first using logic, then the menu instructions and gfinally a search that led here.
ITunes was supposred to be fun. It is anything but that.
A CD can be obtained in AIFF format for auto playing but not a DVD.
G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   MCE DVD firewire external
G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   MCE DVD firewire external

You do realise iTunes Music Store only sells compressed music, right? It was only an M4P file that you bought in the first place.
    Cap.

  • Getting me very angry

My Mac Book Pro will not display any images however I hear Hard Drive sounds and I tried all the steps on the AppleCare site. This started when it shut down due to what I think was overheating.
I have never been more angry with a computer ever and I have never had a problem with a Mac before but this is my 4th problem with this Mac Book Pro. I did expect more from Apple..
    Please provide any assistance possible
    Thanks

It sounds like your harddrive is about to die. There'r two things you could do before calling applecare.
1st- Boot it from the DVD that came with the computer- run disk utility and repair the disk
2nd Get yourself a copy of Diskwarrior and let it do its magic
if the computer is still under applecare you shouldn't worry about it.
No reason to get angry, it could happen to anyone.

  • Very Angry!

I wanted to voice my frustration over a recent incident with my FIOS service. On Sunday night 6/01/14 I set my DVR to record NHL playoff game 7 of the Blackhawks/Kings on channel #590. After the first period the recording froze, as well as the channel itself. I spoke to a Verizon Customer Service rep and ultimately I had to reboot my FIOS box. The result (which I feared) was that the entire game was over after the reboot, and I did not get to watch anything after the point the DVR recording froze. Considering how much I was looking forward to enjoying this final game to a historic playoff series I am still extremely angry that I missed watching this game!!! For the price I pay to have my FIOS package, this type of glitch is completely unacceptable!!! If this type of error happens again, I will be reconsidering the provider my cable and internet service.

The reason I mentioned to call Linksys is that I don't think you're problem is normal.  You might have an issue that will require replacement, or some tweaking like mared stated that they can help you with.
I certainly do not have ANY of the issues described in this thread.  For instance, I upload files (some very large video files >20GB) almost on a daily basis and quite often either move them from one folder to another and/or rename them.  No re-indexing at all (at least not that I can tell), and they are available immediately.  I use windows explorer and do not use the media hub file browser.  The latter of which is too limiting.
Also, I wasn't aware that they charged for support.  The last time I needed help (~3 mos ago) there was no support charge requested.
Anyway, good luck and hope your issues get resolved.
