View XMP file information of placed jpg

Hi,
I have several JPG images with IPTC information placed in an InDesign document. The problem is, the IPTC information is not available through the panel information > file information of InDesign. The menu item is disabled. And it is also not available through scripting.
If I open the placed image in Photoshop and save it again, everything is fine.
I assume that the XMP information of the image got currupted somewhere along in our workflow. How can that happen ?
Thanks Stefan

And here is a more simple example — writes data to the history panel from ID to Thumbnail in Bridge:
#target indesign
myDoc = app.activeDocument;
myFullname = myDoc.fullName;
myPageRange = pageRange();
var bt = new BridgeTalk; // create a new BridgeTalk message object
bt.target = "bridge"; // send this message to the Bridge application
myScript = 'var t = new Thumbnail (File ("' + myFullname + '")); var mdata = t.metadata; mdata.namespace = "http://ns.adobe.com/photoshop/1.0/"; mdata.History += ""Blah-blah-blah"\r"; mdata.Caption = "Pages. " + myPageRange;'
bt.body = myScript
bt.send();
function pageRange(){
  var myFirstPage =  myDoc.pages.firstItem();
  var myLastPage =  myDoc.pages.lastItem();
    if (myFirstPage == myLastPage){
        return myFirstPage.name;
    else {
        return myFirstPage.name + "–"  + myLastPage.name;

  • No XMP files are written for JPGs even when explicitely requested

    Morning all,
    I have learned not to trust the LR database too much. Thanks to Dan Tull I had my corrupted file repaired, but with 10,000+ tagged and processed RAWs, I do not feel too safe with the database alone. So I have decided to have XMP files written for all photographs. With 1.0 it worked only for my RAW files, not for my JPGs (have no other types).
    So I was happy to find a flag "Write XMPs also for JPGs" in the catalog settings of 1.1. However, whether I check it or uncheck it, no XMP is written for JPGs. Neither when I let LR automatically write XMPs nor when I do it manually from the menu...
    Anyone having an idea how to make this setting work?
    Thanks,
    Dirk

    The advantage of sidecar files is that they are nondestructive to the original image. So exporting the images is no point.
    And that the data written to the JPG contains all the settings is simply not the case. Try it out as follows: get hold of any one JPG in the finder. Import it to Lightroom. Do some strange manipulations on it, crop and go b/w. Then choose "Save metadata to file" from the Metadata menu in Library module. Now go to finder. The JPG is updated indeed. Copy it and import the copy into LR. The new version is the same as the original, no settings applied. And how could it? JPG is a defined format and it does not have room for most of the information that can be put to XMPs. So whatever you might expect from that export will disappoint you should you ever need it ;-)
    Anyway, the issue remains: I would not expect LR to write more (e.g. virtual copies) than it does for RAWs, but I would expect it to write an XMP which is what the option offers: "Write develop settings to XMP for JPG...". How can I make it work?

  • I am unable to open my current LR catalog. How can I take a .CR2  and. .xmp file to create a .jpg?

    I work off my external hard drive. I am still able to access all files on the hard drive, however they are all .CR2 files and .xmp. I'm trying to take the files and create a .jpg. What is the easiest way to go about this?
    HELP!

    What happens that you cannot open the catalog??

  • Software to view full file information?

    Hello, is there an apple approved software that will allow me to see the full file information i.e., tag information, comments, etc...  I would like the see this info in a list for all files in a specific folder.  Finder only displays a few of the tags for files.  I need it mainly to edit tags for music files but do not want to import the files into my itunes library to see the info.  It would also be a plus if I could edit the info mannualy on the spot. Not looking for the software to auto correct the files.
    Thanks! Happy Holidays!

    Hey there, I don't know if you knew that already. If you did - Welp I gave it a shot. If you don't want to convert files maybe you should look at metabliss.com to help lighten the load. I would definitely make a copy and try it on PC to see if the same issue occurs.

  • I am able to 'create a new version from original' but when I try to export the original, I only get a .jpg with the XMP file. The original is obviously there but why can't I access it please?

    In Aperture 3 when I right click on an image I am able to 'create new version from original' which suggests that the original is there. When I try to export the original I only get a .jpg with the XMP file. These particular images are from 2010, has the RAW file become disconnected somehow? Please, how do I get access to the RAW file for editing in Ps? Thank you. Thomasrevil.

    Sorry leonie, 'Use RAW as Original' is not an option for the image shot with the Canon.
    Then your Import settings must have been different, when you imported the Canon photos.
    You can check, if there is still a hidden raw file somewhere. If the image has been imported as a pair, you should see the "J" badge in Browser and Viewer, if you enable badge overlays. This indicates a pair, with the jpeg as original.
    Select one of those images, and then relocate the original files "File > Relocate original" to a folder, where you can inspect it. Use "File > Show in Finder" after ward. Look, don't touch .
    Then put it back, using "File > Consolidate".
    Do you see your raw files in the folder, or is only a jpeg there?

  • How can I quickly view pdf files like I can do with Windows Picture and Fax viewer for jpg files?

    How can I quickly view pdf files like I can do with Windows Picture and Fax viewer for jpg files? I need to look at several thousand PDF files. It takes too long to open each one individually. The only thing I could think of is combining them into large groups and then using the Navigation index. But I like the way windows Picture and Fax Viewer does it because you can keep the files separate. Combining PDFs causes loss of individual file names. That would be a problem since I do need to have the individual file names.

    Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is a DLL and is started via a rundll32.exe call and can't be set as an application to handle images in Firefox 3 and later versions.
    Try to set Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as the default viewer in Windows, then it should be listed automatically in the Mozilla Firefox Browse dialog.

  • Turning on 'write xmp files' in LR 5.4 changed the modified date on my old raw and jpg files. Can i stop this?

    On the advice of an article saying XMP sidecar files are a safer alternative to relying only on the catalog, I recently (June 16, 2014) turned on write XMP files. Now all my JPG and raw files have the same modified date of June 16, 2014, making it impossible to know which are the most recent files, etc.
    Is it possible to change this behavior to only create these files for new images - or to stop this behavior?
    I'm reverting to a backup of all my files and turning this option o ff for now.
    Thx

    I assume your raws are in DNG format? If xmp is in sidecar, it won't change raw file date.
    Anyway, saving xmp does not change any dates in Lightroom, so you should still be able to sort by edit time or capture time...
    But if you want control, you have to save manually instead of automatically.
    Two things that might help:
    1. Filter based on metadata status.
    2. robcole.com - DNGPreviewUpdater

  • Bridge,( Installed, Default .jpg viewer), doesn't open by default jpg files.

    I have Adobe Bridge installed and set as my default image viewer including .jpg's. It appears in programs list and as default image browser. I have some jpegs, however that a friend sent me that won't launch Bridge when selected. Their extensions are DSC###.jpg.
    When selected, Windows viewer is launched. When file association is promted, Bridge does not appear in the program list, even when a deeper search in the Adobe file is performed. The images appear and open properly IN Bridge, but not by default when their file is selected outside of Bridge. Bridge appears in file association for other .jpgs. There doesn't seem to be a file extension DSC listed ( I didn't think it would be).
    What Gives? (Win7 ultimate, Adobe CS5)
    TY in advance!

    Perhaps it is a matter of semantics.  Bridge is not a separate program, so it will not be listed as the default program to open image but listed as CS5 (don't have any of those programs on this laptop, and out of town).  It is strictly a browser so technically the images do not open within it.  You can view the image but to open it it will be in the parent program Photoshop or one of the other in a suite.
    Adobe is quite particular on images.  Some images just will not open in PS.  Then the best bet is to open in a program like Infanview and then use "save as" to save without imperfections.
    Quicktime is the default program to open many files in Bridge, and is necessary with certain file formats.
    If I am not getting to the heart of your issue I don't mean to dance around it, just not fully comprehend it.

  • Will edited Raw files retain the xmp edited information when converting to DNG format?

    I have a bunch of old nikon and canon Raw files that was edited in Photoshop Camera Raw.  The Raw files have corresponding xmp files.  I want to convert these edited Raw files into DNG format.  Using the Photoshop Camera Raw converter or using the free Adobe DNG Converter tool - will the edited information from the Raw files be automatically converted over to DNG? What would be the best method to convert an edited RAW  file into a DNG file, and retain all the editing (xmp files)? Thanks for help!!!

    Using either the dng converter or camera raw though PS and Bridge will convert your RAW files to dng and keep the edited info from your xmp files, which will be add into the dng format.  If you have a lot of files to convert, it might be faster to use the dng converter.  Next choice would be to select them all in Bridge, right click and select "Open in Camera Raw."

  • Lightroom 4.1 change Unused psd, jpg, xmp file in catalog?

    I recently upgraded to LR 4.1 on a Win 7x64 machine. I noticed that a large number of jpg, psd and maybe some xmp files that are in my catalog had their last modified date set to the current date even though I did not edit them. Is this a possible issue with Lightroom 4.1? (I also upgraded to PS CS6 but did not edit the files in question).
    Another note: They tend to be older files (1 or more years old) and from one physical drive (which happens to have the older files) and not another.
    Thanks!
    Message was edited by: waforum123 : changed to add that jpg file dates were also changed.

    I think I may have figured this out. I deleted some keywords (from the keyword list). I think that Lightroom went through and re-wrote all the files that had those keywords in them thus generating a bunch of newly modifled jpg's, xmp's, psd's etc..

  • Importing geotagged jpeg and raw photos with xmp files issue

    I had a folder of photos (all unique, no dupes) from two different cameras. Some were .jpg and some .cr2 (raw). I used an external app on my Mac 10.6.x called PhotoLinker to geotag the photos based on gpx track files. I wrote the metadata out to .xmp files, done by that app. So then I had a folder with .jpg, .cr2 and .xmp files I then moved them to another volume and did an Import Move operation in LR3.  For the raw images, all went fine.  The images were pulled into LR and they each had the geotagged data for location. But for the jpeg images they were imported into the catalog in LR but none of them had any geotagged data for the location.
    Can someone let me know if they have encountered this problem and what they did about it?  Is this a bug?
    I even selected one of the JPG files in LR grid view, then did a read of the metadata from a file. The upper left corner displayed that the metadata file was being loaded from XMP.  But again, no geotagged information. If I load that same .xmp file back into PhotoLinker it shows the geotagged data still there.
    What gives?  Why is this happening?
    What I am using...
    Mac OS 10.6.8
    PhotoLinker 2.2.9
    Lightroom 3.4.1

    Thanks for the response and answer, Ian.
    That strikes me as really odd. I realize that jpgs can have metadata within the image file and maybe the issue for LR is which does it consider to have priority. However, if so, why not present a dialog asking the user?
    I would suggest Adobe plan on filling the gapping hole LR has when it comes to geotagging support. It currently provides very minimal support.

  • Bridge CS6 Mac XMP File Info Panel Bug: can't copy and paste metadata

    The cmd-keys / shortcuts doesn't work in the xmp file info panel btw. in the xmp / iptc fields (e.g. cmd+c, cmd+v, ...) of Adobe Bridge CS6 (Mac OS 10.6.8 and 10.7.3). You are not able to cut and paste info from one box to another like previous versions.
    This bug only appears in the xmp file info window (opened via alt+i) in Bridge CS6 - if you edit information or metadata in the file info panel in Photoshop CS6 copy and paste from one field to another works.
    The shortcuts also work under Windows (tested under Vista).
    I noticed this minor bug already one in the Photoshop CS6 Beta more than one months ago. I hoped that this was corrected in the official test version, but unfortunately it is not. Although it is a minor bug, it is IMHO a basic function and would be very helpful in my daily work - it is too bad, that such a small thing is making working with the application a little bit annoying.

    Thanks! If there is a workaround or simple solution, I would be very glad if you could inform me.

  • XMP files not moved

    I have searched the fourm and there are a couple of responses to similar questions, but I I can't seen to find how to move the XMP files when I drag a folder of photos from one external drive to another external drive.
    I drag the folder with 500 photos over the photos go but I get a message saying the following files did not transfer and its all my XMP files for the images I transfered.  How can I get the folders and the edits to transfer from a 500gb to a 4TB external hard drive
    Thank you in advanced
    Joe Cosentino

    Lr creates XMP-files only for Raw images - although the box in >catalog Settings >Metadata tab speaks of " ... write changes to XMP>.
    But true XMP-files in the sense of side-car files, i.e a separate little file that sites next to its image file are only created in the case of Raw images. In the case of JPGs, TIFFs, PSDs the changes are written into the header of the file (but not in the image pixels!) and a separate xmp-file is not created.
    Lr saves changes to XMP (i.e. writes the changes into the header of JPGs, TIFFs, PSDs and creates separate "true" xmp-files for Raw images) only if you do this either manually (by pressing Ctrl / Cmd + S / or doing >Metadata >Save Metadata to file) or by checking the box <Automatically write changes to XMP> in >Catalog Settings >Metadata tab.
    I you do neither of these, Lr will not save to XMP and will not create xmp side-car files for Raw images.
    My remark about <Show hidden files> was not meant for Lr. What I meant was that you move the files in your OS (Mac Finder / Win Explorer); and in Win Explorer is an option to <Show Hidden Files> under >Tools >Folder Options >View tab.
    If you move images in your OS Lr will show the old folder with a question mark and will show images as "missing". You then have to re-link Lr to the new location of the images.
    See here on how to do that: http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm
    Since it seems to work now, better stay with moving images from within Lr - until you understand the issues involved in moving images in your OS.

  • XMP Files in LR 1.4.1

    Hi,  In using LR I find that my image folder contains not only my FPG and RAW file but also many images have an associated XMP file.  I have Three quesitons:
    1) Am I correct that the xmp file holds the edits I made in LR?  In other words the original RAW file is untouched but as I "develop" an image the sequence of changes are placed in the XMP file.
    2)  If #1 is correct, is that the only way to store the changes?  When I first researched LR I thought I saw something acout having a choice of storing such info in either XMP or the LR Catalog.  What are my options and how do I select which one I want to use?
    3)  When I select a bunch of images in the grid, then right click on a different folder and select "move selected images to this folder" it moves the JPG and the RAW and updates the catalog to know the image is in a new file.  However, it seems that the XMP's are still in the original folder.  Is this normal?  Should I move the XMP files to the same folder that the images are now in?
                             Thanks -- Dan

    Am I correct that the xmp file holds the edits I made in LR?  In other words the original RAW file is untouched but as I "develop" an image the sequence of changes are placed in the XMP file.
    No, this is incorrect. The edits are stored in the catalog file. You can make Lightroom write a copy of the edits to an xmp sidecar, but it will be a copy, not the main repository. If you choose to write xmp files, either explicitly or automatically, indeed the original RAW is untouched. If you edit the xmp sidecar in another program, Lightroom does NOT automatically pick up on the changes. You would have to explicitly read from it. If you do that Lightroom will overwrite the settings in the catalog file with those in the sidecar.
    2) answered above. You cannot choose. The main store is always the catalog file.
    However, it seems that the XMP's are still in the original folder.  Is this normal?
    As far as I know, if lightroom wrote the xmp file, it should move it along. Perhaps another program (bridge or ACR for example) wrote them. In that case Lightroom doesn't know about them and won't move them along.
    Should I move the XMP files to the same folder that the images are now in?
    As Lightroom doesn't really care about them you only need to do this if you want to keep things nice and tidy I guess.
