Virtual Directories vs. IIS "Web Sites"

I haven't tried installing multiple WebTools instances into different "Web Sites" yet. I'm wondering if there are any recommendations when doing this.
Without testing it yet, my first thought is to let WebTools install into the virtual directory, and then copy/paste into the separate IIS "Web Site".
Yes? No? Anyone with experience on this? Any issues with licensing if there are multiple installs like this?

Hi Paul
You can use the installer, but effectively all it is doing with the website files is extracting the contents into the directory you specify then creating a new website in IIS with the application root pointed to this directory. It also creates a web.config file with the database connectionstring in it and encrypts it using the private key you chose or was chosen by the installer.
If you just copy the webfiles into a different directory then create a new website in IIS, the installer will not be aware of this instance, and you will have to create a new instance in order to use the installer for upgrading to a new patch level. So be careful if you choose this route.
Its recommended that you use the advanced mode of the installer to create multiple instances.
In terms of licensing, the web tools license is per server not per website so you could host multiple websites on the same machine with one license.

Thanks for your answer. i need some suggestion regarding on going issue. First i have created a web application at port 80 when it was in singer server and then i extended to 443 and 80 in multi-tier farm as you can see in the below image

understanding is, as there is no IIS site into virtual directories obviously will throwing error. Usually first i create web application at different port (example 8080) and then extend the application to 80 or 443. As i have already place this web application
and did customization, what will be the best way to handle this situation?

Coldfusion Internal Web Site Overriding IIS Web Site

We have CF 10 Enterprise installed on Window Server 2008 R2, using IIS with multiple web sites defined. These are set up in IIS in the standard way of mapping a domain name to an IP address. The sites are pointed to various directories on the D drive and CF is installed on the C drive. What is happening is that occasionally a call to a CFM script will error out, and in the CF log it shows that the file wasn't found because CF was looking for it in C:\ColdFusion10\cfusion\wwwroot instead of in the correct directory on the D drive. I did some testing by adding an index.cfm to C:\ColdFusion10\cfusion\wwwroot and I found that file overrides the index.cfm in the root of the site in IIS. How can I get this resolved so that the CF web site is not interfering with my IIS web sites?

We don't have anything in the internal webroot except what CF put there. I added the index.cfm to test and then removed it. But we still get situations where scripts on our site aren't found and the CF error log shows that it was looking in C:\ColdFusion10\cfusion\wwwroot instead of the root of the web site as set in IIS, like the message below.

Unable to delete a SharePoint 2010 My Sites content Database and IIS Web Site even after changing timeout

I am currently having issues with deleting a content database for mysites which has web application http://<servername>:11100. The database was migrated from sharepoint 2010, but on creating web app it timed out (was corrupt due to this). Problem
is I cannot delete now as I get "Request Timed Out". Even when I try just deleting the Web App or the Content Database individually. I have already updated the timeout on the Central Admin App Pool to 300. This used to work, but no joy now. Seems
like ever since I added this My Sites Web App I am getting this problem.
The setup is 1 Database Server (64GB), 1 Admin Server (24GB) and 3 WFE Servers (12GB each) - all VMS. System is also running PowerPivot. Central Admin is running on a WFE server. Is this setup OK for just one user? Reason I have 3 WFE is this already existed
and App Servers will be scaled out when we start testing. Running 11 Web Applications.
Help appreciated - any ideas?

OH - I tried to delete with powershell and it tells me it requires SHarePoint Administration Service to be running, but the problem is it is already running on the WFE with Central Admin on.

The timeout may cause this issue. But would you let me know the error message when we delete the database?
However, you can delete the web application(my site host) and click delete database and IIS web site option.
Also, you can try to clean cache and check if issue persists:
Please stop SharePoint Timer Service.
Please navigate to the cache.ini file location:
Delete all the .xml file and only leave cache.ini in the file location.
Edit the Cache.ini file and set it to 1.
Save the Cache.ini file
  Start SharePoint Timer Service. The cache file will be created autumnally.

BOE R3 and VS2008 IIS Web Site Open Error Front Page Extensions Missing

Can some please advise.
We have BOE R3 deployed with TomCat.
We have IIS for applications Development with VS 2008.
I have added a the HowToScheduleCustom_VB to the IIS.
When I Open the Web Site is VS 2008 I get an error Front Page Extensions Required.
Are the Front Page Estensions required.?
Or should we be using the Java Eclipse.?

Are you trying to open the website on your development box (the one that has VS 2008 installed on it) or another server? If it's on another server, you might want to check out this thread:

I am assuming here is talking about the virtual directory. But when I tried to follow the steps to set the Application Protection (last step) I got a popup warning says:
COM+ was unable to talk to the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator.
what's that mean? how can I set it?

How to nest a WCF service into a virtual directory off the Default Web Site

I have a service called PdfCreator. I want it installed on my servers in this directory for QA: "Default Web Site/QA/PdfCreator/PdfCreator.svc". I want it installed in this directory for DEV: "Default Web Site/DEV/PdfCreator/PdfCreator.svc".
If I specify QA/PdfCreator in the project's "Web service virtual directory name" field PB complains about invalid characters (the "/"). Is there any way to get around this? The only work around I can think of is adding "qa" or "dev" as a suffix/prefix to the virtual directory name ("Default Web Site/QAPdfCreator/PdfCreator.svc") which doesn't really give me what I want.
This isn't a big deal with only a few services but could become one as more are created.

Antonio, Thanks! That seems to have worked for Safari. However, we like Firefox too, and I tried to set that up the same way, but was told "can't find a manifest for that app". I wonder if I can copy the Safari list then alter and rename it?

MySql connection to Win2003 virtual directories

CS3 PHP/MySQL local Dreamweaver running on Mac OS X 10.5,

testing server running on Windows Server 2003/iis/PHP/MySQL.

does not work
for me. The only way I can get it to work is by putting the
_mmServerScripts
folder in the iis default site - any other setting returns a
401 permissions
error. The virtual directory is the live directory for the
site and has
appropriate permissions allowing http access and ftp access
but
Dreamweaver errors with 401.
1. Dreamweaver will work with the _mmServerScripts in a
folder that is not
the site home folder
2. The advanced site definition dialogues are unhelpful as
they do not reflect
what is going on and the error messages confuse the matter
I still have no idea why Dreamweaver is returning a 401 error
but it seems
that it does no support virtual directories in iis, which I
find hard to believe.
I feel I must be missing something.
Note: I don't want to use the default/root on this server
because it has
restricted access for another purpose.

I'm designing a PKI for my company and will need a web server accessible from outside for doing web enrollment as well as for publishing CRLs and AIAs. Can this be the same server?

yes, you can use the same web server to host CRT and CRL files. And there is nothing complex to create the site. Just create a web site and point it to a folder that contains your files, or add a virtual folder to existing web site.

I'm guessing you mean Virtual Directories in IIS?
I don't think CF is the one actually accessing these
directories? I think IIS
simply has a map from the virtual to the physical, and it's
the physical that IIS
passes to CF?
Meaning, CF is unaware of the Virtual Directory? This is not
to say that .cfm
files located in Virtual Directories do not get processed by
CF.

Windows IIS virtual directories

I'm setting up CPS and Contribute 3 on a large site. Users in
different departments have access to specific folders that contain
their pages. What I can't seem to be able to do is to add virtual
directories to the users' list of folders to edit (though I really
just want them to be able to link to files in those virtual
directories). The virtual directories contain document libraries
(agendas, minutes, reports, media releases) that are maintained by
another system, so it seemed like a good idea to keep those folders
out of the root folder of the site that the CPS manages. But those
virtual directories don't show up in the list of folders to allow
users to edit. Has anyone run into this problem and found a way
around it? I could just drop the virtual directory idea if that's
the only way.

Hi,
If NDES is the only CA role service on this server, this problem is expected. Because NDES requires the installation of the Certification Authority Web Enrollment role service on the same Server.
The Certificate Authority Web Enrollment pages are needed since the NDES IIS application is a virtual directory underneath the Web Enrollment pages (CertSrv).

Sccm 2012 DP failed to create iis virtual directories

I am trying to install a branch server as Sccm 2012 DP.
I already installed around 15 branch servers without any problems.
The problem I have is that the branch server failed to create iis virtual directories.
In my console under Monitoring, component status It writes that Distribution Manager successfully installed iis component of operating system to distribution point ""
Next it writes error to send packages to that branch server.
The site server distmgr.log shows the error below:
Failed to start primary service wdsserver
Microsoft Sql Server Native Client 11.0 login failed for user "xxx"
Failed to connect to the sql server connection type : SMS ACCESS
for Display = \\myserver\mswnet: sms_site= XXX failed to get master SCF.
Currently site xxx is initializing site control data. Cant get Master SCF from database at this time. will try later.
DPConnection;;;; ConnectWMI() failed to connect to branch server.
I try to remove the dp role, leave it for 12 hours reboot the server and assign the role again but same problem.
Any idea ?

Local Director unable to detect a failed web site

Hi all,
I have configured the local director to load balance several web sites on two real servers. One of these sites is required to be configured in backup mode.
For some reason the local director is unable to detect the site has gone down (by stopping the site to update the web content), therefore not directing requests to the backup real server.
I am using IIS 5.0, since its quite popular out there, has anyone experienced a similar situation and if so, how did you resolve it?

Your problem is based in the Operating system, not the Local Director. The LD is a layer 3 device. Microsoft put their application architecture together different from the Unix world, ie: Any ip address bound to a MS box is answered for by the OS - not the application (IIS in this case) If IIS is hosed up the OS will still answer for the IP you have bound to the NIC of the OS - the OS does not care at layer 3 that you want a higher level reply - LD does its availability checking at Layer 3 - the OS layer for MS. In the Unix world when an application is bound to a port - ie: Apache to port 80, then the apache deamon answers for that ip/port - not the OS - Apache panics and it will not respond at Layer 3 - the OS could be fine, but the LD will know that ip/port is not responding and will take the appropriate actions by your LD config.
Check out the httpprobe feature of the LD - it lets you test for a file in a URL inside the LD.

Can I have two separate logins/restricted directories in the same web site?

I want to have an admin area where I go against a user table to see if the user has admin rights and a separate area of the web site where regular users need a username and password that is validated against a different table.
All the pages in the admin area are in the admin directory.
All the pages in the other restricted area are in a consumers directory.
Both these directories are off the root.
Will this work ok? It seems to be, but I just wanted to check.

No, I have two separate tables. It seems to be working, and I am hoping it is because I've kept all the pages that use one table in one directory, and all the pages that use the other table in another directory. Just wondering if I am asking for trouble. They are two different functions. One is for site administration, and one is for a number of users.

am trying to set up claims - fba in sp 2013. so for thepurpose of adding .net users

and .net roles section using IIS 7.5,
i went to the site in iis and tried to add the same:
but i saw that Providers was missing from iss 7.5 . in prev version of iis , it was existing after pages and controls section.
but in iis 7.5 its NOT available [[ my framework is .net 4.0 ]].
Can anyone point me , how to get that Providers section within ASP.NET

According to your post, my understanding is that providers section was missing in iis 7.5 web site.
The <providers> collection of the <windowsAuthentication> element defines the list of authentication providers that are used with the Internet Information Services (IIS) 7 Windows authentication module.
The <providers> element was not modified in IIS 7.5.
To use Windows authentication on IIS, you must install the role service, disable Anonymous authentication for your Web site or application, and then enable Windows authentication for the site or application.
