  • How many clients support access points 1602, 2602, 3602?

Hi! How many clients support access point 1602, 2602, 3602. I have found for example that the 1602 supports 32 ClientLink clients and max 128 clients, APs 2602, 3602 supports 128 ClientLink clients and max 200 clients. But is it really? And can we say for example that the AP 2602 will withstand max 200 clients?

The reason the answer varies so much, is because there are so many variables (this is also why the value ranges so much from one manufacture to the next).  When determining the answer you are looking for you need to consider the following factors and likely more:
AP model and the features it supports
single, dual, or tri radio AP
    20, 40, or 80Mhz wide channels
Device type (b/g, b/g/n, a/b/g/n, a/b/g/n/ac, spatial stream support, and channel width support)
    Security/QOS method(s) employed
    Average distance from the AP
    Obstructions between devices and radios
Number of competing radios for the same channel
    Data rates configuration
    Rogue detection/mitigation configuration
Surrounding client density not just the area of concern client density
    Noise floor levels
Application types/per user network load (is it heavy like YouTube traffic or a drone on the network like Pandora)
Network latency on the switching side - including the internet circuit
Application of per SSID, per user, and or per application rate limiting
The list continues, but I think you get the idea
I have personally seen 80 devices on a 5Ghz radio of a 3500 access point with several other access points and at least 200 other clients in the area and it was working well.  That being said I would never design to expect that many on a single radio, but I think it is better said that you can safely design for 20-30 clients per 2.4Ghz radio and 25-40 clients per 5Ghz radio.
The default statement of 20-25 per AP and similar low expectation statements concerning Cisco wireless have been around for many years.  It is now 2014.  About 65% of clients support 5Ghz, ~9% support AC (already), ~90% support some form of N, and ~0.01% support B only.  The landscape of wireless is changing fast making questions like this one have ever changing answers.
    I hope this helps :).

  • ISE deployment in wireless infra without WLC (only Access Point 1240AG)

    Hello All,
I am having access point 1240AG and planning to deploy ISE as a exteral radius server. I would like to know how deifferent authorization policy need to configure in AP/ISE. Whether I can use named ACL or VLANs (CoA) as a enforcement types without use of WLC. If yes then how?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
You can perform COA on standalone APs you will need to have an inline posture node in order to reap the benefits of COA, you may have heard this from any vpn related deployments. If you are in the design phase of this project, you may want to purse controllers because the latest rumor is that the inline posture node may be dropped since Cisco is planning on supporting coa on all their devices once the 9.x code drops for the ASAs. However please contact your Cisco rep for an official response.
Here is the footnote in the following link: "Autonomous AP deployments (no WLC) also require deployment of an Inline Posture Node for posture support."

  • WPA2-EAP and WPA2-PSK supported Access Points

    Dear Team,
I have been looking to find the Cisco Access Points that support both:
WPA2-EAP: Encryption: AES, Authentication: IEEE 802.1X
WPA2-PSK: Encryption: AES, Authentication: PSK (Pre Shared Key) with more than 21 Characters, combined with MAC address filtering.
I am confused about this and need help, please advise.
    Regards,

Sure.  Go HERE.  Click on the APs you want and go to their individual Data Sheets.  Use Ctrl+F and enter "WPA2" (or whatever features you want).

  • Supported access points for the rv220w

I need to extend my wireless coverage to another building.  What access points, in repeater mode, will the rv220w support?  I need an AP with detachable antennas.  I have an external mounted antenna on the metal building that I need to hook the AP to.  Thanks!

Hi R. B, thank you for using our forum, my name is Luis I am part of the Small business Support community. As far I know the RV120W and the RV220W uses the same chipsets, so they could be used for WDS bridge setup.
For your second point the RV120W has antennas and you could remove them. Bellow you will see the review of the RV120W.

  • No network connection btw WLC and access points

    Hi,
There is no L3 network connection to some of the 1522 APs in our mesh network.
They register with the 4402 WLC (5.2.157.0)i.e. appear in the AP list. When sending ping packet to APs IP addresses from WLC or PC there is no response, but I can see APs MAC addreess with "arp" command. Users connected to these APs can not access wired network, also in Monitor -> Current clients -> Detail "Auth" is Yes for users who can access wired network and No for those who can not.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    TIA.

Today I found out that AP-15 in the following mesh configuration  was the source of the problem:
    No network connection to AP-15 and it's child APs (AP-19, A-17, B-18, B-14,A-16),
when testing links with "child" (AP-19) and "parent"(AP-21) APs "Error: Cannot get
stats from the destination ap" message but it sends and receives packets to and
    from other neighbor APs.
After Hardware Reset on WLC web interface AP-15 functions normally.

  • WCS displays Access Point as disassociated but WLC shows as associated

    Hi all,
I have a WCS ver 7.0.172, a 5508 WLAN Controller with ver 7.0.116.0. At this WLC 21 Access Points (AIR-LAP1131AG-E-K9 ) were associated. As well I have one CleanAir Access Point (AIR-CAP3502E-E-K9) is associated.
    And now ... my problem:
every time the WCS got a critical error and reports that the AP is disassociated from Controller. But if I take a look to the WLC the AP is associated and works at local mode and have two clients associated.
I cleared the alarm - a few minutes later the alarm will be reported again. Same result if I delete the alarm.
Could anybody give support for that issue.
    Thanks and regards
    Holger

    Hi Holgerseiler,
Have you got any information/solution on this issue?
I also have same kind of issue. I have a WCS with version 7.0.172.0, and around 25 WLCs (version7.0.116.0, in which i checked) and totally around 1000 APs are assiociated in wireless network.
Some error messages are coming on my WCS device like
    "AP disassociated from Controller [ip]"
Here AP name and WLC ip address will change randomly, but there is no impact on my network.
    Thanks in advance

  • Access points joining different WLC

    hi
i have a wireless controller module( NME-AIR-WLC25-K9) installed in a Cisco 2851 ISR, this setup is in my remote site, we are connected through MAN network. In our main office i have a cisco 4402 wireless controller. so whenever i install a AP in my remote site instead of joiining the remote site WLC, the access point joins my main office 4402 controller, i dont why it is happening, the AP is not even trying to join the remote site WLC.. i have not configured high availability and both these controller are in separate RF network.
the firmware version in NME-AIR-WLC25-K9 is 7.0.98.0 ...
the version in the other controller is 6.0.196.0
Please let me know what is else i need to check asap
    Thanks
    karthik

    Hi,
Did you even see the AP trying to join the local controller?  If the controller are in different domains, the AP will prefer the remote controller since it join that one first.  Since you are running 5.2, try configure on the AP the primary controller with the name, and local IP address of the local controller, and then reboot the AP.  See if after that the AP join. run debug capwap events enable to see if you see the AP event trying to join the controller.

  • Access Points keep associating and disassociating from WLC

I have numerous access points, both 3502 and 3602's that are connected to Cisco 2960s POE switches that will disassociate and then reassociate themselves with the WLC.  The WLC and access points are running 7.4.110.0.  The particaular Cisco 2960s POE switch in this case is running 12.2(55)SE3, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1).   This is becoming a widespread issue.

When the AP recovers, what is the physical up time and WLC association time.
Now if your AP(s) regularly reboots then I'd consider you test the cable runs using the on-board TDR feature of your switch.

  • Using several UMTS access points (APN) for different services

    Hello,
I wonder if it is possible to use several UMTS access points (APN) for different services.
    situation:
    1) The iPhone is used for business AND private purposes.
    2) The company's mobile telephone contract includes a APN, which is only usable by the employees' mobile phones.
    problem / question:
Is it possible to define two access points in the iPhone, that for example the exchange account uses the company's APN, while all the other apps use the standard APN of the carrier?
Problem is, that some iPhone's benefits like Push-Messages are blocked by the carrier's APN. Now, I have to switch the access point by installing the appropriate profile every time I want to check my e-mails or vice versa for using "normal" apps.
I hope you can hep me.

Thanks for your help! This really helps a lot! We actually only want to replace the autonmous access point with the controller solution and make one WLAN available at another site. From what I can see, this is possible with our current solution - we just need to switch from Layer 2 to Layer 3 and purchase the corresponding amount of supported Access Points (I think we should be able to get some refurbished ones).
Am I correct in assuming that the Access Points we want to replace (AIR-AP1230B-E-K9 with 802.11b radio only) cannot be upgraded to lightweight ones? Since if I understood document http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/conversion/lwapp/upgrade/guide/lwapnote.html correctly, this is not possible with access points that only have 802.11b radios.
Regarding the switch from Layer 2 to Layer 3: Do we really only need to perform the steps I described in my first post?
And one last question regarding REAP. As far as I understood this is only needed when local traffic needs to be maintained in case the connection to the WLC becomes unavailable. So we really don't need it if we want to access resources that are only available over the WLC?
    Thanks again for your help!

  • Help required to implement Cisco 2504 WLC and 1042 Access Points

    Hi,
My name is Vidya Sagar. I am new to Wireless technology. We are planning to implement Wireless in our office. I have given the requirements below. Kindly go through the details and let me know how to start.
We have purchased Cisco 2504 Wireless Controller (One) and Ciscon 1042 Access Points (Five). At present I am going to use 3 access points only.
I have attached a simple diagram of our office network. We have more than 30 VLANs configured in Core Switch, we are planning to give wifi access to only 3 VLANs.
    1. VLAN 121 ( IP Segment - 10.52.121.0 /24)
    2. VLAN 116 ( IP Segment - 10.52.116.0 /24)
    3. VLAN 100 ( IP Segment - 192.168.100.0 /24) (Guest)
Please give me a implementation plan to do this. I would like to use LDAP or ACS for authentication purpose.
    Regards,
    Vidya Sagar

Lets just do this simple first before you start using ACS as that will require a certificate installed on the ACS for using PEAP.
So first off, the WLC we will say is in vlan 10. When you are going through the startup wizard, make sure you define the vlan tag to 10 on the management interface. Make sure your virtual interface is an IP address that is not routed in your network, like an out of band IP.
Make sure the WLC time is correct or use NTP!!!!
Now you should be able to http or https to the WLC. I would upgrade the code to v7.4 and install the FUS image. Please reference this link for the upgrade procedure. You don't have to upgrade now... I would wait till you get everything working first.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/crn74.html
Now I would connect the APs on the same vlan as the WLC for now. Make sure there is dhcp on that subnet. Once the APs have joined, then you can move them to any subnet you want. Since you don't have many APs it would be okay to leave them in the same vlan as the WLC management or out them on any other vlan you choose. The APs will be connected to an access port NOT a trunk port!!!!
The WLC will need to be connected on a dot1q trunk port only allowing vlans 10,100,116,121. The 2504 running v7.4 will support LAG (etherchannel). Any ways, your switch port should look like this for example only
    Interface gigabit1/0/1
    description WLC2504
    switch port trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchoort mode trunk
    switch trunk allowed vlans 10,100,116,121
    spanning-tree portfast trunk
channel-mode group 10 mode on << only for v7.4 if you use lag
Don't connect all four ports right now, just port one!!!!
Your Guest vlan, you will need to create an ACL to block traffic from accessing the internal network. You might want to allow dhcp and DNS bit I would leave it open first until you can verify everything is working.
Now on the WLC you need to create a dynamic interface for vlan 100, 116, and 121. If you click on the Controller tab in the GUI and click on interfaces on the left hand side, that will take you to where you can add/delete/modify your interfaces. When creating these interfaces, make sure you add the dhcp server IP address for the primary and or backup.
Now that you have your dynamic interfaces created, its time I create your SSID. Now click on the WLAN tab on the GUI and click on WLAN and then on the too right select Create New and then click go. Select WLAN on the drop down menu and then for the profile name I would use the SSID name also for simplicity.lean e the WLAN id to 1 for this and 2 for the next and so on. After defining these and clicking Apply you can now define your SSID. On the General tab, enable the status and leave the radio policy to all for now, you can decide later what you want to use. Choose your interface you wan to place this SSID on and enable Broadcast SSID for now and leave everything else alone. Now click on the Security tab and on the layer 2 Security, leave it at WPA + WPA2, only check WPA2 Policy and for WPA2 encryption choose AES only. Now go to the bottom of that screen and choose PSk. We will do pre shared key for now so you get to understand the setup and make sure everything is working first. Now on the PSK format, choose ASCII and put your pre shared key in the input box. Make this simple to for testing. You don't want to put in symbols or anything like that. When you are don with that, check apply on the top right and test.
Now you can repeat this with your other SSIDs just to test. Your guest network you can leave open for now to test open authentication.
Here are some links for the WebAuth feature:

    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6366/products_tech_note09186a0080b1a506.shtml
Now if you want to use ACS with PEAP, here is some links for that:
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/videos/2499

Well that is it, hopefully you can get the wireless up for testing and verifying everything works!

  • Can a single Access Point support both bridge mode and Access Point mode at the same time

    Hi Guys
Does anyone know which access point can work in both bridge mode and AP mode ?
    Cheers

Well what are you trying to cover. If its really a large outdoor area, then look at the mesh AP. Those require a WLC. Autonomous or stand alone ap can perform bridging on one radio and client access on another. You can also look at AP that support indoor mesh that also controlled by a wlc. If your putting APs outdoors, then look at the outdoor mesh.
    Thanks,

  • WLC 5508 and remote site (DMVPN) Access Points

    Hi All,
We just purchased a WLC 5508 and would like to know if it will control remote VPN site Access Points.  Here are the details:
The 5508 will live at our home office.  We have multiple remote sites that are connected via Cisco's DMVPN.  Each site has one Cisco 1131 Access Point hanging off of either a Cisco 1841 or a 2811 that is using DMVPN back to the home office 2811.  Can the 5508 manage the remote Access Points?
    Thanks for your help guys!

Are you are talking about OfficeExtend?

  • WLC upgrade license and access point

    Hi everyone,
I need suggestion regarding wlc 5508  upgrade license. Right now i have 150 license for access points. There will be upgrade around 300 access points. So we are planning to buy new license until the maximum capacity of 5508 (500 licenses).
Our management ip address is 192.168.50.x/24 . so all the access point are pointed to this management ip address (in the same subnet)
    First question,
Because there will be an upgrade to around 450 access point. The current management ip address will not be enough.
Please, give me the  best suggestion ?
Should i create another management ip address ? or I need to make a bigger subnet using the current management ip address ?
if i create a bigger ip address, the current access points must be set again yups ?
    Second question
There will be a new link connected to the wlc, and i want to create new user subnets.
what is the best practices for this matter ?
if there are better suggestion, please let me know, i am still learning about wireless
    I have attached the topology.
    Thank you
    Fanie

For an example, a 5508 can support up to 500 AP's, and the AP's can be in one large subnet or be in many different subnets and or even different locations. As long as the ap knows how to discover the WLC or the ap already had joined the WLC, then the AP's don't have to be on the same subnet as the WLC. The easiest way to have AP's join is to stage them on the same subnet as the WLC management and then move them to a different subnet. I would probably have no more than 100 AP's per subnet, but that's me. Stage some AP's on the management subnet that the WLC is on and then when the AP's join and complete downloading code, change the switch port Vlan and shut and no shut the port. The ap will come back up and join the WLC.
