VIs in Dropbox, file-verison conflicts possible?

Hi
I develop my VIs mostly on my laptop, also at home, and need to use the VIs on a 12-core workstation at work. I want to have the latest VIs on both computers, and therefore Dropbox might be a good version to keep the VIs always synchronized.
My question:
What happens when both LabView-clients access on the same VIs? I need to run an overnight- data analysis routine on the computer at work, and meanwhile start changing and improving the VIs in the Dropbox-folder with my Laptop from home. Would you assume immediate conflicts, or should this work mostly without any conflicts?
The question is, whether Labview is doing 'in-time loading' of SubVIs at the time they are executed in the program, or is loading the whole code into memory and does not access the VIs on the HDD later on. I'm not using global variables. When the VIs are all loaded once, it shouldn't matter when the VIs are changed in between .
Does anyone know the loading-procedure of LabView sub-vis? Is this done in-time, or once at the beginning? Does anyone have experience with LabView VIs in the dropbox?
Greetings
Werner

By default, LabVIEW will load all SubVIs when the caller is loaded into memory.  So unless you have changed this by right clicking on the SubVI and selecting "Call Setup...":
or you do any dynamic loading of VIs using VI server then you should be fine.
Your approach seems nice and simple and should work for simple use cases.
I would also recommend checking out source code control tools if you haven't already (I use subversion, it's free). It lets you check code in and out of a repository and can notify you when the copy you have locally is out of date and gives you the option of updating. Without this type of functionality I could see you getting into a painful situation where you're making changes at home and don't quite finish. If you save you'll break the working, older version at work, if you don't save you lose your local changes, and if you rename you risk confusing yourself or LabVIEW as to which is the "correct" version.
Good luck, let us know how this works out for you,
~Simon

  • When using a personal dropbox account, is it possible to use the mapped drive without downloading all my dropbox files to my hard drive as well?

When using a personal (not business) dropbox account on my mac book pro, is it possible to use the mapped drive only?  Currently I have dropbox mapped to my computer but it is also saving a redundant copy of the data on my hard drive.  My goal is to pull, edit and save files on the mapped drive only without having a redundant back up of all my dropbox files on my computer wasting valuable storage space.   Any advice out there?  Thanks in advance for your help!

I don't believe that is accurate, but maybe I am missing something (I am not a Windows user).
Looking at 2 explanation of how to map a Dropbox as a drive…
    http://lkeng.org/wp/?p=147
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5d8uvseVr5A
Both of those are linking to the 'local copy' of Dropbox. It is not a true 'network' drive as far as I can see (it still requires the local copy on the PC).
Another video suggests using another service to mount the Dropbox, but that is not using Dropbox anymore, it is going through Otixo…
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAIpm2qmglU
Dropbox does not provide easy to use URL's to mount as a network disk so I don't think this is possible on OS X.
    Dropbox's forum has this too…
    https://www.dropboxforum.com/hc/communities/public/questions/202133795-How-to-ma p-dropbox-as-a-network-drive-on-Mac?loca…
You may need to examine the Windows computers carefully - if they have Dropbox installed & running then all the files are stored on the local machine in addition to the 'mapped drive'.
It looks to me like people are 'redirecting' the local copy to appear like a remote disk just so they can address that path on other machines - each PC is being setup the same. You could create aliases on OS X, but it doesn't help move files off the machine.
Hopefully someone else will contradict me, but I don't think this is how Dropbox works.

  • Why can't I see my Dropbox files in the Open file window on my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014?

When I try to open a file from Dropbox; it does not show up in the selection list.
I have to down load the file to my tablet first. Then I can see it to open. (Pain in the butt).
Is there a way to open dropbox files directly?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

This would probably be something they'd have to incorporate, however unlikely due to Creative Cloud being a somewhat-direct competitor in terms of images.

  • I can't open illustrator files as an error message says 'file contains conflicting spot colour information...' then closes, how do I resolve this?

The full message reads 'The file contains conflicting spot color information. Spot and process colors cannot share the same name. Please resolve the spot color conflict and try reopening this file.'
The problem is the file just closes after that. If anyone has had this problem before and managed to resolve it, please please help!

This turned out to be a links issue. One of the psd's had corrupted. In the end we found out by making sure the file couldn't connect to the links in the illustrator document allowing it to open in the basic vector format. We disconnected from the network, another way would be to move the links folder. Once the file was open the links could be deleted/replaced seems it didn't close the file straight away.
I hope this helps anyone else that has this problem, there really wasn't much information on it, especially not up to date information.

  • Making a file the smallest possible

I have a 48 minute podcast. How can I make that file the smallest possible for transferring the data? It has voice and music.

    Christopher,
I thought I had it. But I don't. I can compres in iTunes
I can convert to MP3, but once I've done that I don't know how to share that to iWeb.
When I put that MP3 file in GB and then try to export to iWeb I get a message I don't like. (see below) it indicates the file is big.
And I don't know what AAC compression is, I don't see AAC in Preferences
I see General, Audio/midi, loops, export, and advanced
When I go to GB prefs > Export > I have
GB pref > Export > Audio podcast settings
    or
GB pref > Export > movie settings
in Audio Podcast Setting I have the lowest setting Mono podcast with extimated size of 11.4 MB
    which I set, However
once I share podcast to iWeb, after it says
"Kick off Again.m4a is a very large file.
Adding "Kick off Again.m4a" to your page may result in long download times for website visitors. FOr best performance, your move file should be no larger than 10MB. You can use iMovie's Quick TIme web exporting setting to reduce the file size."
I've looked at iMovie and Quick time preferences and don't see where to make a change in those preferences.
Also I don't know how large the file is once it is in iWeb. So I don't know if it is just 11MB or much bigger.
I'm getting closer but not where I need to be in my understanding of how all this works. You are so kind in helping me. thanks

  • My time capsule erased all my files, is it possible to recover any of it?

My time capsule erased all my files, is it possible to recover any of it?

None of free or lower priced utilities will get the files back. Disk Warrior might be able to get into the drive.
    http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
If still no luck, you will need to look into having a professional data restoration service try to get the files.
Unfortunately, no guarantees with either approach above since Disk Utility was unable to repair things and the file structure is likely corrupted.
    Good luck in your quest.

  • Sidecar file has conflict

    * I imported several thousands photos (JPGs) into lightroom.
    * I edited metadata of these photos before import in lr with some other tools
    * I selected "Automatically write changes into XMP" in lr catalog settings
    * I reorganized my keywords
==> I saw that some of those photos has "Sidecar file has conflict" (the "!" sign at the upper right corner in grid view)
    * I searched for the error and I saw, that some of the photos did only have IPTC and no XMP metadata included.
    * If I copy IPTC data to XMP, I can save metdata to file in lr
==> My question: Because there are thousands of photos: Is there a way to search only those photos which have  "Sidecar file has conflict" in lr?

To all contributing on this thread -
A .bat file called from a Shortcut Icon works as Rob suggested: only two lines (in Windows).
        Start sqlite3.exe "Lightroom 3 Catalog.lrcat" ".read BadToFile.sql"
        Start "" "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.3\lightroom.exe"
The BadToFile.sql includes the code previously suggested with a couple of lines to define file name and turn headers off.  I then set up a smart collection for LR marked images.  Now occasionally when I want to update image, instead of selecting all and updating them with Ctrl-S, I:
         1.     Exit LR and re-enter;
         2.     Run the LR Tranporter routine to mark images that are in the file list just created before start-up;
         3.     Select the smart collection and the select all images in there; then
         4.     Hit Ctrl-S.
Not a bad short-term solution.  Also, if I then exit and repeat the step, it leave in those few images that can't ever seem to get updated with Ctrl-S and I can work on them individually by clicking the update icon or Updating DNG Previews (sometimes these work).
    Anyway thanks for this thread.
    Jeff
PS - The marking "Red" also works similarly but the downside is that when selecting the collection of those that are "Red", you can't save them before removing the "Red" or they will continue to have a mis-match when the "Red" is removed.  You have to first save a quick or dumb collection to not lose the selected group.  Also, if you have color labels in use, it overwrites them in "Red" and can't remember what color it was before - can be a bummer.
PSS - After playing with the sqlite command window, I agree that the table structures of this LR database seem a bit of a mess.  It has probably morphed over time and may not be the best design if one were starting from scratch.  I therefore wouldn't want to spend too much time working with this database as a re-structure seems in order sometime in the future.

  • Connect to Dropbox - Files don't show

Hi, my Filemanager does not show Dropbox-Files and Folders anymore. It broke a couple of days ago. The Connect to Dropbox-App shows all information right, but I can't access files or folders - the screen is just empty just as my Dropbox is empty.
    I already tried:
    rebooting the deivce
loggin in and out of Dropbox
uninstalling and reinstalling Connect to Dropbox
    deleting recently created files
FYI: The Connect to OneDrive-App works without problems and shows all the files in the finder.
    Solved!

Same here, they seem to have worked out the bug.

  • Must I have room for all my Dropbox files on my iPad?

My main goal for (potentially) buying an ipad would be to read and markup pdf files (and web pages in pdf form). I currently have these stored on my desktop (imac), laptop (pc), and Dropbox.
Do I have to be sure that my iPad has enough storage space for my entire Dropbox collection? Or is there a way to edit files locally on the iPad, restore them to the cloud, and keep them off the iPad long-term? (On my laptop and desktop, all Dropbox files are stored locally.)
I don't need to have ALL my work files on my iPad, but I'd like to have access to them for editing. I worry about running out of space quickly (given other stuff I'll have on there, such as music).

So I assume you can "unstar" them when you're done and the local iPad copy will vanish? Then you could star it again ... etc. Sounds ideal.

  • Error: Sidecar File has Conflict

    Hi
I've just tried to work on a collection of files, previously edited in Lightroom, and found they are marked with a '!', which, when hovered over indicates that 'Sidecar File has Conflict'
Does anyone know what this means?
    Thanks

    When you have metadata conflict:
If you edited them in Silver FX, without going through "proper" Lightroom (Edit In) channel, and haven't edited them in Lightroom (since xmp was saved), then it's a bug. What Lr should have done is set the up-arrow icon (indicating external changes need to be incorporated in Lightroom). If you have changed photo in Lightroom too (since xmp was saved), then it's not a bug, since Lr doesn't know which changes to keep and which to discard - settings from one source must replace changed settings in the other source, to resolve conflict.
If you edited them by going through proper Lr-involved procedure (i.e. Edit In...), then it's a bug, because Lr (and companion app) should always "do the right thing" in this case.
Dunno if that answers your question, since I couldn't be sure what happened exactly based on your description.
The thing to do is make sure metadata is squared away (e.g. no down-arrow, no up-arrow, no exclamation icon..) before editing externally, then there should be no conflict - it there is, it's a bug and you can resolve (safely) by reading metadata from disk (Lr's metadata menu).
Conversely, if you haven't edited externally, there should be no conflict, and if there is, it's a bug, and you can safely resolve conflict by saving metadata to disk.
PS - Change Manager (a plugin I wrote) can be used to see exactly what is different between settings and metadata in catalog vs. disk (xmp).
    Hope this helps,
    Rob

  • Lightroom 1.3 "Sidecar file has conflict" on .PSD files...

I've got some .psd files that I changed in Lightroom - they're layered photoshop files, saved with maximize compatibility. The change is to keywords on these files. At present I have about a dozen (that I know of) that appear NOT to be able to update their metadata. The error that displays when I put the mouse on the image's metadata icon is "Sidecar file has conflict".....
Mayhap I'm missing something, but there are no sidecar files that I know of. They're PHOTOSHOP files, not RAW. The only change to these files in Lightroom was to add, delete, or alter one or more keywords. Other files write metadata successfully, but these fail. How do I get LR to fix this?

Don, not that I'm doubting your statement, and in truth I can't recall whether or not there were jpegs with the same name, but if having a jpeg with the same filename causes this kind of problem, isn't that pretty much the definition of a BUG? Again, this seems a pretty major problem, although I suppose if it only happens occasionally and the people affected don't mind losing their changes, its no big deal...
