VZW - Bring back global data plans or this will be my last trip with a VZW phone in my pocket

(Background -I travel from the US to NZ&AU 3 times per year 2-3 weeks at a time for business. After my last trip I raved about VZW's data service in AU and was looking forward to having it available again. I even purchased a Droid 2 Global for my upcoming trip because I knew i could rely on the service. Called VZW today to make arrangements..)
Last trip (September 2010) : $65 for unlimited data
This trip (: $20/MB
Dear Verizon -
At this data rate your product is no longer a reliable business tool - it is at best a novelty. Even though I have a capable device in my pocket, I will have to search out wifi hotspots throughout my trip b/c your service is cost prohibitive. This change makes a clear statement that you do not want to be taken seriously as a global service provider, and is disrespectful to those of us who signed contracts with you based on the availability of your international data plan.
As my trip is just 1 day away, I do not have time to find a new provider before i leave. This, however, will be my last trip abroad with a Verizon phone in my pocket if the unlimited data plan is not brought back. Early termination fee? Doesn't look so bad when you consider that it costs more to download 15MB than it does to terminate my contract.
If anyone at Verizon actually reads this board, please take this thread as a notice from myself and those who post below that you will be losing us as customers if this situation is not rectified.

Agree completely.
Background:  I've posted a few replies to this topic on Droidforums.net (Under Droid 2 Global).  Just found out about this plan being canceled this week while preparing for a 1 month trip to Japan - figured I would just call to reinstate the plan only to be told it no longer exists.  I am a new VZW customer as of this past November and had used the unlimited data plan on a trip passing through S. Korea and 2 weeks in the Philippines in December - Droid 2 Global worked flawlessly for data once Global Support was able assist with the correct settings.
I am extremely disappointed and feel I was misled when entering into a 2 year contract.  From what I have read it sounds like plans were in the works to cancel the plan with a notice being sent to existing customers last November or something.  Nice that I was told the truth as it was the primary reason I switched from AT&T.  By rights the salesman had an obligation to tell me "you know, this plan is being eliminated as of January xx so if you want to keep it you need to keep it active".
Regarding the 4G LTE service, yes the CS agent I spoke with the other night mentioned this as well but either way I am hosed into getting a new device at that point so give me one good reason to stay with VZW.  At this point as I mention below I am perfectly willing to cut my losses and go back to Brother Orange or other.  In all honesty what I have found in the past 3 months of nationwide travel is that the call quality is muddy at best compared to my old RazorV3 on Orange and seems to be better on NON-VZW networks.
Fool me once, shame on you... Fool me twice shame on me.  This is going to hurt VZW more than it hurts me.
If anyone else on this forum could verify if I was given the correct contact names noted below (this came via text msg from CS agent as I was still speaking with her - bless her heart):
1.)  Daniel S. Mead is in fact the President & CEO and
2.)  T.J. Fox is the Regional President for IL and WI.
I have every intention of writing a more formal version of below and sending via Fedex or USPS with signature required as it seems electronic means is not allowed.
The following is posted on the above mentioned forum:
Strength in numbers...
I recall one of the earlier posters had the idea of a petition and I see that Word attachments are allowed here so perhaps I'll draft something up on the flight this Sunday from LAX to NRT and post it next week. Perhaps not so much a petition but more of an "open letter", potentially post it on VZW's own forum as well.
I talked with CS last night for a while regarding another issue and also brought this up. The agent provided me with the following contacts and suggested I write a letter:
Daniel S. Mead - President & CEO
One Verizon Way
Basking Ridge, NJ 07920
T.J. Fox - Regional President IL, WI,
777 Big Timber Rd.
Elgin, IL 60123
If anyone else wants to take a crack be my guest, I just think that with minimal effort Verizon might take notice.
Key points as follows:
1.) $20/Mb for Global Data (Verizon doesn't seem to "get" the idea that "Global" is bigger than just North America, Canada, Mexico and Europe) is not just inconvenient it is outrageously overpriced rendering the phones useless:
Again, using my last months usage as a reference and I don't believe I am a heavy user - email, some browsing, Weatherbug, Nav. etc:  250Mb at $20/Mb = $5,000
Do they seriously think anyone can afford that? All they have done is to hurt their own bottom line.
I'd be really curious to know how many subscribers to the $64.99 Global plan they had or in other words how much revenue they lost.
I'd be happy with a compromise but to eliminate it completely?
2.) According to Global Support, Data has to be either on or off, no way to selectively leave on POP email which is really the only thing I have a need for and simply turn off everything else. Even if you use an App killer how do you really prove there is no data transferring unless you specifically tell the device.
Might be time to root if I could be sure it would eliminate unwanted data transfer.
3.) The availability of this plan vs. other carriers was the only reason I switched from AT&T last November. No mention was ever made of this plan going away. Misleading sales tactics IMHO.
4.) Canceling my contract (family plan at ~ $190/month) that is only 3 months old at this point would sting a little bit for me in terms of 2 lines @ $320 each for early termination.
But, from Verizon's perspective that would be 21 months of lost revenue or ~$4000.
So if 10 people were to send letters/ 10 signatures, we're are talking about potentially $40,000 or more.
100 people now we are starting to get into serious money.
Any way you look at this, Verizon has only succeeded in hurting their own bottom line:   Potential canceled contracts, customers spending the money elsewhere such as Japan's Softbank or NTT Docomo in my case, potential new customers lost due to publicity of this, etc.
Any +/- feedback appreciated

Hi,This morning I wanted to call, so I took my phone ( Iphone 4 S) ,but my All contacts list was empty! I checked in my computer ( windows 8) I have them in Iclould. How can I bring back my data?

    Hello Noushin,
It sounds like you are unable to see your contacts in the phone, but have confirmed they are still at http://www.icloud.com. I would next try these troubleshooting steps from the article named:
    iCloud: Troubleshooting iCloud Contacts
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3998
If you're using iOS 7, quit and restart the Contacts app on your iOS device:
Press the Home button twice to see preview screens of the apps you have open.
Find the Contacts preview screen and swipe it up and out of preview to quit the application.
Tap the Home button to return to your Home screen.
Wait a minute before reopening the Contacts app.
Turn iCloud Contacts off and back on:
    Tap Settings > iCloud.
Turn Contacts off. Choose to delete data only if your data exists at icloud.com/contacts and on one or more of your devices. Otherwise, choose Keep Data.
Wait a few minutes before turning Contacts back on.
Restart your iOS device by holding down the Sleep/Wake button and then swiping the screen when prompted to power off. Then turn your device back on. This may sound simple, but it does reinitialize your network and application settings and can frequently resolve issues.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Global Data Plan not working in the Netherlands

I called customer service a week before my trip and arranged for the $30 "Global Data" plan to begin April 1. I have been unable to get a data connection here in the Netherlands and e-mails to customer service have gone unanswered. I cannot see anything on my account to indicate whether this has ever been activated.
By poking around the settings and setting the data networks to GSM I've been able to see Vodophone, T-Mobile, and KPN listed, but if I try to connect to any of them I get an error that indicates I cannot connect to them.
Can anyone provide some advice on how to get this working? I was really relying on this to help with getting info on places to visit and it's proving a pretty difficult trip when having to rely on free wifi spots to make up for this.

  • In other words is any way bring back old data itunes kept in PC(was vista- crashed- now win7)...

    As stated briefly:
    My PC crashed
I have all files but cannot run os vista was
to run itunes in a new win7 pc with prior data: I must connect ipad and synchr (but this says This device (IPAD 1) synchr with another Library go and delete data and replace with current lib?)
or exist other way use old data(Old hdd) of itunes in old PC to new itunes new pc??? so avoid deletion...
in other words is any way bring back old data itunes kept in PC(was vista->crashed->now win7)...?

If you want to transfer to a new computer here is the way-
    1. Without connecting your iPad to your new computer -
    A) Install iTunes / make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed.
    B) Go to the Store tab and click on "Authorise This Computer".
    C) Go to Edit, click on Preferences and click on Devices. Put a check mark in the box next to "Prevent  iPods/iPhones/iPads from syncing automatically". Click OK and close iTunes.
    2.  Connect your iPad to your computer -
    A) Start iTunes (if it does not do so automatically).
    B) Right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select "Transfer purchases".
    C) When the transfer has completed, right click on your iPad again and select "Backup".
    D) When the backup has completed, left click on your iPad, click on the Apps tab, and put a check mark in the box next to "Sync Apps", and then click on "Apply" (bottom right).
    E) Unless you want to always do a manual sync (as I do), go back to Edit, Preferences and uncheck the box next to "Prevent your iPod.....".
    F) Finally, on your iPad, check that everything is syncing properly. If not, go back to iTunes and check all settings.
NB You should not lose any apps. However, any 'purchased' missing apps can be downloaded again FOC. As with updates, this must be done with the Apple ID under which they were originally 'purchased'.

  • The global data plan is a scam.

Bottom line of the story: Your Verizon phone will not work at all either in Europe or in South America.
I called three months ago to ask Verizon if I was going to be able to make phone calls in China. Without asking me, I was added against my consent to the global data plan. When I found out about it reading my next bill, I thought it might be a good thing. After all, I was about to go to Germany and Argentina and it would be nice to have data there. So, I thought of keeping it. However, the plan doesn't work. In fact, the phone doesn't even make regular phone calls in any country except USA, Canada, Mexico, China, India, Israel and a few more. It won't work anywhere in Europe or in South America. The problem is that Verizon phones are CDMA, which is a technology which was fully replaced by GSM in most countries. So, your regular Verizon phone will not work almost anywhere. You could get a special GSM phone for your trips. But besides being a nuisance, it was something I wasn't aware since I didn't even request the service.
How did my story finish? I asked for a refund for the $100 I payed for the three months I was in the plan (somehow I was charged double the first month). I was given $25 back only. I payed $75 and I didn't get a single byte of downloaded data in exchange. I'm switching to either AT&T or T-Mobile next month.

Best advice I can give any traveler is buy a cheap prepaid phone when you get to your destination
It will save you so much money and so many headaches
That's not bad advice, but if you travel a lot, it makes sense to get a global-capable phone and use local SIMs.  That way you get cheap rates but can still use all your nice data features, such as Google Navigation.  Until the latest crop of ICS LTE phones, you would need to ask Verizon for an unlock code to use a local SIM.  Currently, at least, these phones work without an unlock.
You do have to be careful though, prevent your phone connecting until you replace the SIM with a local one, to avoid data charges simply caused by the phone syncing with email, Play store/Apple Store etc.

  • How does the Global Data Plan affect my limits while still in the states?

I turned on the Global Data Plan for a trip next week.  Will my normal data limits apply while still in the states this week?

        Hi KBKB,
I wish you a safe trip next week. The Global Data Plan has no impact on the data plan you would use in the states because they cover data differently at a separate cost and data allowance. Do you need more details on our Global Data plan? Visit http://vz.to/1oEXUCa.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
If you are referring to the first generation Apple TV, then you cannot sync content which is stored on its hard drive back to iTunes.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To reset your Apple ID password without knowing your security questions or have access to the email account, you will need to contact Apple Account Security in your country.  Links to contact can be found in the article below.

My iPhone 4 shows the carrier name, I can go online with my data plan, but there are no bars and I can't make phone calls.
It worked for some time, less than a week, I made phone calls and all, and all of a sudden the problem mentioned above happened. Now I can't make any phone calls. I can go online with it, even with my Data plan, I can go to the app store (of course) but can't make any phone calls.
    Please help, this is frustrating.

Did you already try the troubleshooting mentioned here? http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/calls/
Also try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button until the Apple lo comes up again. You will not lose any data doing this.

  • Unable to use my Blackberry Tour in the UK even WITH Global data plan

    Hi,
I just flew into the UK and was disappointed to see that my phone service or data service is not enabled.
Prior to flying in(10-12 hours ago) I called Verizon customer service, and validated that I had a Global Blackberry Data Plan, and the customer service rep assured me that my phone will work without any issues once I get into the UK. So I didn't bother taking my "other" older AT&T phone(which I keep just in case) with me.
Now I'm stuck here for 3 weeks without any phone or data service! It's pretty crippling..and the best part is, I'll be charged as per my monthly plan regardless, when I get back.
    Any help or suggestions?

I have provided some information below, that may be helpful in using your Blackberry Tour in the U.K.
After steps 1 and 2 below, if you are still receiving a red SOS symbol in the upper right hand corner of the device (your SIM card is either missing out of the device, or it has not been activated on the billing side).
**The steps below are assuming the SIM card and Global plan were already activated.
Step 1. – Ensure your device is set to Global or GSM (I have provided a link below on checking this setting)
    http://search.vzw.com/?do=viewdoc&id=24732&p=null
***If it is on Global already, ensure the “Data Services” section are “ON” and select GSM as the Network Technology (3g and 2g is preferred)
***Please note*** you will need to switch it back to Global once you are back in the United States.
Step 2. Try power cycling the mobile network (I have provided a link below)
    http://search.vzw.com/?do=viewdoc&id=24687&p=null
**leave the network off for 15-20 seconds and turn it back on.
Step 3. Try a soft reset - Remove the battery off of  the device and leave it out for at least 2 minutes. Place the battery back in and wait for the device to fully boot up (it may take 2-5 minutes for the device to fully boot)
Lastly, if you are still getting the SOS symbol in red, you can check to see if your device has a SIM card by doing the following:
    http://search.vzw.com/?do=viewdoc&id=30045&p=null
**Use the via device option (if it has an 893144***** number then your SIM card is in the device).
    I hope this helps.

  • Got new ipad; data plan transferred to new SIM; what to do with old SIM?

Hi, I bought a "new iPad" and just set it up as a restore of my old iPad. It seems to have automagically transferred the data plan from my old sim to the new sim that was already in the iPad. The old SIM isn't working any more, I tested it.
I am giving my old iPad (iPad 2) to a friend, I'm wondering if I should give them the old SIM card as well, it seems like it's ready to be set up as a new account.
When I put the old sim card in the new iPad, it says there's no data left on it and asks if I want to set up an account.
There was also a note that you could transfer an old plan to this SIM just by logging in to the account for the other SIM, so I think this automatically happened with the new iPad.
Should I give my friend the old SIM as well as let them use that to set up a new account, or should I trash or store it and ask them to go to AT&T store to get a new sim?
    Thanks

Your friend can use the old SIM card.

  • My phone battery can only last an hour. Problem started a week ago while I was in Argentina. I am back in the country now, this morning I left the house with a full battery and when I got to work the phone had shut down. Phone is 7 months old. Why?

    Dear Apple Family,
I have been using an iPhone since I lost interest with Nokia phones. I fell in love with Apple's innovation, design and technology.  However, I am beginning to lose interest wth the product as well.
I have an iPhone 5, my phone's battery can only last an hour and the phone is 7 month old.  The problem started last week while I was in Argentina. I had a bad holiday due to this, as I could not make use of the technology because my phone was off most of the time and I had nowehere to charge except to go back to the hotel.  I could not even share pictures on Instagram.  Has anyone ever experienced such a problem?  If so, why and how was the problem fixed?  I am starting to engage in a debate that I have been trying to avoid with my friends.  They say that Samsung is striving and I now tend to agree, and if the problem persists I will gladly join the Samsung family. They seem to make reliable phones.  Sadly, I never experienced this problem with iPhone 3GS & iPhone 4S.
    With Gratitude,
    Thapelo

    Hello,
If you're in a country where there's an apple shop (unfortunately not mine), go check it and ask the employee about it: he's gonna check your Iphone on a "device"
I've got an iphone 5 and it's working very well with me but I have to admit that its battery lasts (slower) than my Ipad 2.
Still i can help with some tips that may improve your iohone's battery by an hour in addition (hopefully):
    - close all apps by multitasking....
    - do NOT keep the brightness to the max
Believe me you're gonna regret changing your phone to a samsung
Hope i've helped and sorry for my bad english (has english as 3rd language)

  • Suggestion to bring back lower minute plans

I normally use 20-80 minutes a month on the 450 minute plan (weighted toward the lower end). It's quite excessive for my needs and Ive seen more than a few (albeit older) posts from customers just withing the past hour looking through the forums with the same feeling. I'm currently unemployed and back in school, so money's tight. I am rather happy with the quality of service I receive and hear negative things about other carriers in my area, so I am hesitant to leave Verizon. I just reupped my contract, which I was hoping to downgrade my minutes plan (I'd set it artificially high for the unlimited texting a few years ago) and saw that the lower minute plans are gone. I'd heard from my local rep that this was done to be competitive, but it seems more logical that a provider would be more competitive with more options, not less. It just seems removing the lower plans was really done to increase profits.
So if you think they should increase their options for customer please comment. If you disagree, please give an alternative if you feel you have to say anything. I'm quite used to forums from World of Warcraft and Rift, so I'll likely disregard anything that's unsupported/troll-like.
    Thank you.
