Way to "shutter"/"mute"/black screen TV display during playback

I am wondering if there is a way to "mute" the TV display while playing music through my Apple TV. Our one year old is totally attracted to the music information screens and I would like to turn off the picture while playing music. Any insight on that?

If you have a set with standard RCA inputs you could potentially connect AppleTV via component/HDMI to see and select the audio, but have a pair of analogue red/white RCA cables on an alternate input for audio without the yellow composite or S-video signal - audio but no video.
A workaround for sure.
Perhaps better to use external speakers or amp/receiver for audio/duties.
Don't forget possible Airtunes function to stream music to AppleTV from a computer either direct or using iPhione/iPod touch to control the audio.

  • Photos not displaying during playback

    Hi all
I added a few still photos from my iPhoto library at the beginning of a showreel I am putting together but for some reason some of the photos won't display during playback.
They appear on the timeline just fine but during playback they go black before it returns to the rest of of the video clip where normal play resumes.
I have tried to move the photos, delete then re-add the photos but still nothing.
The photos display perfectly in all other sources and devices.
    Any ideas?

I am having the same issue.
    There are several methods.
Hold option and CMD when iPhoto starts and rebuild the data base, then try grabbing them form iPhoto to iMovie.
Export them from iPhoto to the desktop and drag from desktop to iMovie.
Thats the 2 which I have limped through the last couple of issues I have had with it, but now I am having no luck at all with an of the solutions (check my recent post about this issue and Apples lack of sh*ts given about it), there are listed the solutions I have tried.
    Hope this helps...

  • Dell Latitude E6510 Black screen before posting during cold boot

When I cold boot my laptop,I get about 10sec of black screen before the laptop posts..1st gen. i5 core,4gb DDR3 80GB Intel X25-M Nvidia NVS 3100 graphics with 512MB RAM.

I received a new XPS13 9343 last week and unpacked it yesterday (Friday 4/24/2015). When I first opened the lid and powered it up there was no display. It was completely black, not blank. I went to close the lid and when slightly jarring it I noticed that the initial screen appeared but briefly.
After analyzing the symptom I decided:
It is a physical issue - not firmware related
While I apply very slight pressure compressing the lower right corner of the display it will function
It is the LCD backlight that is intermittent as the image is perfect otherwise and turns on an off with pressure not quite instantaneously
Once the laptop warms (2 minutes) the display becomes completely reliable and unaffected by lid motion
My bet is that this is a problem with the conductive rubber mounting strip used to make the many connections to the LCD panel. Envision a very thin foam double sided tape with the characteristic that current can only flow front to back through the thin dimension of the tape. Adjacent pads (connection points) are not shorted by the tape and pads (carefully) aligned on the other side of the tape are connected. Its very ingenious actually.
In my case probably the circuit for the LCD backlight is at the end of a strip on the bottom right. It didn't properly bond during production. Probably once current flows through it (when I compress the display or hold the lid in just the right position) the adhesive warms and grabs hold. It probably doesn't take much to pass the low currents involved. I wonder if after some use or exposure to warmer operating conditions if it might not finally bond permanently and the issue go away?
Anyway this is what happens when you present an engineer with a problem, it gets over analyzed. You would like to think that within hours of posting this a bunch of production engineers will run over to all of the fixtures in their facilities that are used to assemble the displays and make sure there isn't one out of adjustment. Uneven clamping force or some such science.
The problem now for me is in finding out if I need to replace it and how much of a pain that is going to be. Unfortunately now I don't want to migrate from my prior laptop if I am going to have to send this one off someplace.
In some way this represents a security feature. Haha. I mean there is a trick to getting the thing to come up that I would only know. Another level of security at no extra charge. Still, one wishes to not have a quality concern floating in the back of your mind.
But, this might be your issue too. Anyone else have this experience?

  • 2006 Mac Pro + NEC 3090 - grey screen not displayed during boot

I have a September '06 Mac Pro 1,1 (Woodcrest variant) hooked up to an NEC 3090 30" LCD monitor, running OS X 10.5.7. Previously, I was using an Eizo S2110W 21" LCD; turning the monitor and computer on would cause the following to be displayed (in order):
    1. Light grey background with dark grey Apple logo with spinning thing.
    2. Solid blue background.
    3. Leopard wallpaper.
    4. Log-in dialogue.
Since using the NEC, the grey screen is not displayed at all: the display stays blank until the blue screen is displayed, and then the Leopard wallpaper and so on. This is using the 2560x1600 native resolution of the display, and has occurred using both 10.5.6 and 10.5.7.
If I change the resolution to 1280x960 and boot, the grey screen is displayed. If I change it to 1600x1200, I get weird corruption on-screen during the period when the grey screen should be displayed; for some reason, this includes part of the desktop wallpaper I was using before I rebooted.
Resetting the non-volatile RAM using Command-Option-P-R works for the very first time I boot the computer, though the grey screen is displayed at very low resolution. If I reboot from the log-in dialogue immediately afterwards, normal behaviour occurs - i.e. the blank screen.
The upshot of all of the above is that if I want to boot into Windows, or install OS X (e.g. when Snow Leopard comes out), I have to remember to boot into my existing OS X installation, change resolution, reboot whilst remembering also to hold down the ALT/Option key. It would be much easier if I could do away with having to change resolution.
I have tried connecting the monitor to a PPC Mac mini at 1600x1200 (it won't go any higher), using Tiger 10.4.11 (not sure of exact version - the latest). At this resolution, the grey screen is displayed.
Using a '08 MacBook Air (first generation) and the supplied DVI adapter, also at 1600x1200, nothing is displayed on the NEC until I get to the log-in screen. This occurs if the NEC is set to be the primary display or the secondary one - the only difference is where the log-in dialogue is displayed. I am not familiar with dual-screen behaviour, so I can't say whether anything is supposed to be displayed or not (i.e. does the grey appear on both displays?).
I have been in touch with NEC Europe support on this issue, who suggested it might have something to do with the 10.5.7 release. I know this not to be the case, as it was occurring prior to 10.5.7 being released.
    Any ideas?

Put more of your hardware listed in your profile.
I looked and don't see you list your graphics card anywhere.
    Graphic card it came with was either X1900 (watch for heat and dust bunnies and clogged vent);
    OEM 7300GT (seems unlikely).
You could have replaced either with 8800GT or ATI 3870.
    Require 10.5.2+ ideally 10.5.6+.
Some problems cropped up with 10.5.7. 10.5.7 doesn't work on some (many) 3rd party displays and stay with 10.5.6 if necessary until it is fixed or resolved.
But you say it happens with 10.5.6 also, and was doing so before 10.5.7? which makes your problem somewhat different or unique.
Zapping PRAM or NVRAM reset obviously shouldn't be needed repeatedly. And your graphics card probably needs to be replaced, or test with another card to rule it out.

  • IPod 4G black screen, unresponsive, stuck during restore

Hi there, I would like to know if anyone has had this problem and if it has been resolved. I've encountered myself to be stuck in this loop of "waiting for ipod" when trying to restore the ipod to ios 6.1.3. It was previously on ios 6.1.2. This is my GF's ipod and she had told me she was using it just fine, but once putting it into her bag, and checking it again the screen had gone entirely black. She'd charge it assuming it was dead but it had gone into a recovery/DFU mode loop. Everytime I plug it into my computer I receive a message that it is in recovery mode and must be restored. I remind you again that no combination of buttons will cure the screen at this point. Holding home + power button for a few seconds for a soft reset just shows the same message when plugged in. Anyway, as I try to update, the screen turns on showing the apple logo and loading bar, but then once the step gets to "waiting for ipod" nothing works. I've tried letting it sit there for over 2 hours, but nothing. I have yet to find a solution, and it's become quite frustrating. Please let me know if you have any idea how to fix this. I've tried messing around using different methods such as iRec, TinyUmbrella, Redsn0w recovery, messing with hosts files, firewall, etc.

I think you are experiencing a fake DFU mode you are always on black screen and iTunes prompt recovery mode.
I think links below can help on how to put it to proper DFU mode, avoid error 1600 and 1601 when restoring, and proper update or restore.

  • No video displayed during playback

    Hello all,
I'm having an issue that seems to have appeared out of nowhere. Thursday I was watching through footage and choose a handful of clips ... my video worked fine. Then Friday I came back to start putting everything together and the clips "went blank," The audio could be heard and played back in real time, but the video displays as a black screen or a green screen. I tried rendering, but it said it would take 2+ hours to render the 1 minute of clips I had in my timeline. Even the sections that did end up rendering just showed a blank red screen.
Clips are .MTS (which I've used in every project previously with no problem) shot with a Panaconic HMC-150.
I'm using Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 on Windows 8, 64-bit operating system
    Processor: Intel Core i7 CPU - 920 @ 2.67 GHz
    12.0 GB of RAM
The thing that gets me is that this has worked for months, even worked with these clips a few days ago, and now it seems like everything just vanished.
I'm not super techy ... but I've been trying to troubleshoot this for a few days. Anyone have suggestions or any idea what my be going on?

    NVIDIA Qudro FX 3800 ... I think.
I'm trying to update the driver softeware now to see if that makes a difference. I think this is the version - 9.18.13.3523.
I'll have to restart my computer to see if it changes anything.
    Thanks for your feedback.

  • R400 Facing problem with Black screen no display

It all started when i using net half way my screen freeze with lots of altered colors.
I have tried to oning laptop series r400 and it loads till windows screen and then it goes blank screen after that.
I am certain that the latop is still running and everything is fine just that there is no display output.
I have tried to enter the bios setup and changed the output from discrete to integrated output and also disabling the auto selection for display output (third option) and i found that it works so i probably guess problem could be with discrete display output.
However, i am not 100% certain that it is the main problem for this blank screen. Is there anyway i can verify this problem or best find the solution to it. Reply me thank you

light on but no boot sound.
No "chord" on startup means the Mac didn't pass it's startup diagnostics tests.
Try here >   Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck
It would only boot after some 20 minutes after several attempts.
If you can get it to boot to the desktop, check to see how much free space there is on the startup disk.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • Black screen in Apple TV playback

When playing TV shows recently, the screen goes, black for a second or so. The video is still streaming because it has advanced after the picture and sound come back. At times it will not happen at all, and other times it is really bad. Has anyone had this problem, and if so, did you find a solution?

  • How Do I Change The Screen Picture Displayed During Logon

Just got my new iMac (10.6.2), I do not like the screen displayed on initial startup while displaying the logon options. On my MacBook Pro (10.4.11) It is a simple blue with swirls. Is there anyway to change this to another desktop screen option?

Thanks! Your directions worked perfectly. While looking through the desktop pictures I came across the cool photo of the Snow Leopard Prowling and went with that. Very high cool factor now on startup.
The following are the steps and messages I received:
Copied the selected photo to another file.
    Renamed it DefaultDesktop.jpg as directed.
Dragged it into Macintosh HD/System/Library/CoreServices file.
I received a message saying that I couldn't make changes to the CoreServices file with the option to Authenticate, selected Authenticate and typed in my admin password.
Received a message stating that I was replacing DefaultDesktop.jpg with an older version, selected continue and now I have a much more pleasing picture on startup.

  • Device driver error msg at startup-get white screen w/audio during playback

PE10 has been working fine until today.
Upon startup I get an error message saying my display driver is incompatible.
I checked the driver in Windows 7-it says the driver is up to date and working fine.
When playing back a video clip I'm editing in PE10, I get a white screen in the playback area with the correct audio. When I pause the playback, the video image appears. Play = white playback screen.
    I have
    -checked the display driver
-rolled my computer back to an earlier restore point
    -uninstalled and reinstalled PE10
    -turned off my firewall
    Any other suggestions to try?

What version of Premiere Pro? Include the minor version number (e.g., Premiere Pro CS5.5 with the 5.5.2 update).
    Premiere Elements 10
Have you installed the recent updates? (If not, you should. They fix a lot of problems.)
    none available
What operating system? This should include specific minor version numbers, like "Mac OSX v10.6.8"---not just "Mac".
    Windows 7 AMD dual-core processor
AMD Radeon HD 6310 display driver
What kind(s) of source footage? When telling about your source footage, tell us about the codecs, not just the container types. For example, "H.264 in a .mov container", not just "QuickTime".
MVI files from camera -- all worked fine in PE10 until today - same files play fine in other players
If you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)?
What were you doing when the problem occurred?
    Starting up PE10
    Has this ever worked before?
    Yes, always until today.
What other software are you running?
    None
Do you have any third-party effects or codecs installed?
    No
Tell us about your computer hardware. Be especially certain to tell us about third-party I/O hardware (e.g., AJA, Matrox, Blackmagic, MOTU).
I'm not techie and don't know what this means - I don't have anything mentioned in brackets
Are you using Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration?
    no
Does the problem only happen with your final output, with previews, or both?
Error message above happens during startup
PE10 now loads really slowly (5 minutes)
Playback in project gives white screen instead of video. Audio is fine.

  • Screen goes dark during playback

When playing a DVD through Front Row the screen is going dark as it does when it is not touched for a while to save battery. However it does not do it all the time and does it at random intervals. Any ideas??
I have played around with energy saving settings but nothing seems to be quite hitting the nail on the head.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Try it in DVD Player (found in the Applications Folder). It may or may not do it here.
The problem may very well be the settings for power consumption.
    1. Open system prefs (Apple Menu > System Prefs)
    2. Click Energy Saver
    3. Make sure that under "settings for:" you have battery selected (you may want to do this for both battery & Power Adapter)
    4. Where it says "Put the display to sleep when the computer is inactive for:", choose 3 hours
    5. Click options
    6. Uncheck the box labeled "Reduce the brightness of the built-in display when using this power source"
This should do the trick. Again, you may want to do the same for the power adapter settings, if this is also happens using the power plug.
    Hope this is helpful,
    Cory
