Weird Continuous Ringtone and Internet Disconnects

We had a new phone line activated towards the end of February.  An engineer visited our local exchange for set up and everything was tested working perfectly.
We then ordered broadband with O2.  When the broadband was activated (early March) our phone no longer had a dial tone and we could no longer receive or make calls….Strangely though the Internet worked perfectly.
We reported the issue to BT who ran a line check and identified a problem with the exchange box.
An engineer was arranged to visit our local exchanged within a couple of days and fix the problem.  24 hours after reporting the fault the phone line started working again prior to the engineering visiting the exchange.  We called BT to clear the issue and cancel the engineer visit.
We have noticed since the phone line has started working again, we now have a continuous ring tone and at the same time the internet drops out then reconnects.
So far we have done the following to identify the problem with our equipment.
Tried 3 different phones (on their own with no filter our router connected) in the test socket and we still get a continuous ring tone.  Used 2 routers (O2’s and our own netgear) along with 3 different ADSL filters and the internet will still drop out when we receive a call.
I am convinced there is still an issue with the exchange as it was never properly investigated when we first reported the issue.
We have spoken to the foreign call centre that run the line checks, unfortunately as we were cut off during the call we had to call back and therefore were dealing with two support agents at the same time. One of the support agents ran a line check when the landline was in use so it has reported a fault with our equipment which according to the first agent, it did not.
The problem is getting a bit tiresome now and we just want a working phone line without these niggles.  The foreign call centre seems only capable of running a line check and our particular problem seems quite unique.  Has anyone else has this issue or is there a direct number for a UK based support team who can help deal with the complexity of our case?
Thank you for reading.

This is simply a customer to customer support forum, I have no involvement with BT or Openreach any more, having retired a couple of years ago.
My diagram shows the points that would normally be checked for dial-tone, its actually quite simple for the Openreach technician to identify where the problem is, by simply using a portable phone.
If it proves to be a lack of dial-tone from the BT Exchange equipment, then the Openreach technician can move your line to another piece of equipment, then leave it for BT Wholesale to sort out.
If the dial-tone is missing after it comes out of O2s broadband equipment, then its possible for Openreach, with the assistance of O2, to move both ends to a different piece of O2 equipment.
If the fault is past that point, then Openreach are still responsible, right up to the master socket in your house.
As you can see, BT retail are only concerned with the exchange equipment. Their line test system will test from that point onwards. So if there is a disconnection in the exchange, it will indicate it during the line test.
Anything after that point, has to be dealt with by Openreach, who can be called by your ISP or BT.
As the problem occurred after you had the broadband installed, it would tend to indicate a disconnection in that area.
It could be something simple, like a broken wire, or unsoldered connection.
I am sure it will be resolved.

  • Close powerbook and Internet disconnects

I went to the energy saving settings and even chose never go to sleep for hard drive or display and still when I close it it kills applications that are connected via FW and internet. Any ideas?

The only setting you need to change to stop your computer from sleeping is "Put the computer to sleepwhen it is inactive for:" within Energy Saver. You just have to move the slider to the Never position. That's it.
When you close the lid the PowerBook will sleep. There is NOTHING you can do about that.
PS If you want to close the lid and not want you PowerBook to sleep you can prop it open a bit. As long as the latch doesn't close it won't sleep. I use a simple old eraser to do this on my PowerBook Titanium which I currently use as a server.

  • Noisy line and internet disconnecting

    Hi
Last year, I had a problem with the phone cable outside the house. When it rained, it caused noise on the line and the internet would disconnect often. It turned out that the outside line was really old and needed replaced, which eventually happened after a couple of engineer visits.
Everything has been going fine, but now I seem to have the same problem again. The noise on the line started last night and today the broadband light on the hub has been turning orange.
I've tried all the usual - I've changed the filters as I have three spare ones, I've tried plugging only the phone into the wall, even via the test socket. I thought maybe it could be an extension cable, so I tried plugging the phone and router directly into the wall.
The noise seems to come and go, just like last year, which makes it harder to pin point what's wrong. At one point I thought I'd sorted the problem and I thought it was the extension cable because the noise disappeared - but then it came back again!
We have had a lot of rain over the weekend, but I think it's strange that it's affected the new line like it did with the old one, unless it's been damaged?? I'm wondering if it's actually the hub itself? It's the black homehub 2 that I have.
I've been at this all morning and I really don't want to call BT because I hate speaking to someone who doesn't understand a word I say and vice versa!
    Any suggestions?

  • Continuous and Frequent Disconnects for last 4 days, 6pm-After Midnight

I've been experiencing multiple disconnections from "enhanced" DSL on a frequent basis the last few nights.  I can tell while either using TV stream programs (such as Netflix) or using consoles requiring an internet connection to run certain features (XBOX).  The disconnects occur at a rate of about once every ten minutes, and lasts for about 90 seconds each.
Though this may seem trivial it continues to increase in frustration when trying to use the internet for shopping, TV streaming, or gaming.  I'm not sure what advantage I am getting paying extra for the "enhanced" DSL high speed internet, or if it is worth continuing my requested service from Verizon.  The fact that the internet simply decides to stop working for 90 seconds every 10 minutes is slightly frustrating given I’m paying for an expected service.  I understand this may be a local weather issue, but I have not received any messages from Verizon stating there is previous storm damage or on-going repairs in which I may suffer lack of stability.
It is not a wireless issue either.  I have a computer hard-connected via CAT-V cable and on the Verizon provided wireless router I can clearly see the Internet light go out while the DSL and Power lights remain illuminated.
I imagine this is not common,  and am hoping for troubleshooting beyond average technical knowledge.  is there a short life span on the wireless router provided?   Resetting the router will not fix this.  I attempted a shutdown, unplug for 10 minutes, and restart of the provided router and the disconnects resumed as normal and scheduled.  I also attempted replacing the phone and internet wires into the router.  I am considering moving my service to one of the local competing companies, but prefer Verizon for the bundle deals with DirectTV.

It's an epidemic everywhere.  I now feel it's to get people to move to FIOS.  They are too cheap to upgrade their equipment for DSL service.  We need to bond together and fight back.

  • Move computer Internet disconnects and won't reconnect.

My internet works fine if I keep my computer in one place, but the second I move it even an inch to the left or right the internet disconnects and airport shows i'm not connected to any wireless networks and won't let me turn airport back on. The only way for me to get back on the internet is to restart my computer. Also if my computer is in one place and i want to move to another room i have to turn the airport off, move to the other room, then turn airport on to reconnect to the network. If i just pick up the computer and walk to the other room the internet stops working and i have to restart my computer. Any way I can fix this or is this a hardware issue?

Having exactly the same problem on my 15inch 2011 Macbook after also going from 10.6.8 to Mavericks. Wifi is totally unresponsive and I can only get the internet working through an ethernet cable. Been looking for a fix for about a week now. Nothing i've seen suggested in the forums seems to work.
Really need to get this working again, as I rely on Wifi to use my mb at work.

What Apple wants from his customers?
    1) I've paid my iPhone 4S 900 euros;
    2) I'm used to buy music and apps from iTunes store;
    3) my iCloud space costs 32 euros per year
and, like me, millions of customers around the world!
and Apple does not allow me (and many others) to use the internet traffic for which I (we) pay my (our) provider, that's not among those that directly sell iPhone??? Is this your idea of a really unblocked device as you falsely declsre from the pages of Apple online store ?!? Shame on you!
If I had know that the 7.1 led to this I'd never updated my iPhone. No one (Apple and the sites that live because of her) told about this issue in their enthusiastic comments on the new, updated version, of iOS. Shame on you!
This would claim a class action against such a behaviour!
    I'm disgusted
    thank you

  • PS4 disconnects to game servers and internet. Still connected to internet. System error? Fixable?

This happened for the first time in Friday. I got my Destiny game and between 1-2 hours I get the message that I have lost connection to the game server. And bunch of others stuff saying I can't connect to the network and are unable to do network stuff with this account. Bunch in one. I tought that the internet was doing this, then I tought it was the game. But no.
Something is wrong with my ps4.
I played another game Final Fantasy XIV and the same stuff happens there too. I lose connection to the server.
    But here's the actual problem.
I can't log back in to the game(any game that require net). Because it keeps telling me that I can't reach the server. And then it says that I must connect to the internet to view that and that. But that grey box that pops on the side does not show up and says that I have lost connection to the internet. So somehow I'm still connected but it says the opposite. I can already view my friends online. But I can't see their info because it loads forever.
I tried to go to PSN Store. But the only thing I can see is the blue background wave moving around and I can only click on "cancel" on my controller.
So I turn PS4 off. And it uses a very very long time on shutting down. And then it beeps two times as if it were forced to shut down.
But when I turn the console on again. Everything is fine. I can view my online friends and click on PSN store and go back to the game.
But in a short while, between 1-2 hours. Or 40 mins later. The same thing happens again. Wether I play Destiny or FFXIV. I disconnect to the game servers. I'm unable to log back in, and everything.
And this is totally ruining my gaming experience.
I even googled it and it seems like I'm the only PS4 owner who has this problem.
So this can't be the WiFi's fault because this is affecting the system of my PS4
A little info on my PS4:
I purchased it in Japan in late March.
Used it for 5 months soon.
    Have always been carefully treated.
Never dropped it on the floor or gotten any swings.
It haven't always standed still because I pack it in the PS4 box when I'm moving it from my dorm room to my gaming room some times. I don't always move the PS4 every time I stop playing.
    Previous experienced errors:
Flickering white screen on start up occationally. (Stopped after using a new TV)
Some times after starting up PS4. The sounds ingame are awfully loud and twisted. Must plug HDMI cable in and out or turn TV off and on to stop making these sounds (Happens anyway on any TV)
So. Is this actually fixable by patch or system restoration?
If it isn't, It means that I have to buy a new PS4.
And I refuse to buy a new Ps4, when I can play games normally but the system somewhat disconnects me from game servers and internet. I used a damn long time on saving money for buying this expensive machine and I won't do it again..
Is there ANYONE who has the same problem? Or am I really the only one who has this problem?

Hi i have had a similar problem fro about 8 months now, im with BT broadband, ive tried 2 different bt routers, a netgear and a asus router, all have the same problem, ive portforwarding, dmz everything, ive tried all the tests that can possibly be done to rule out that there is something wrong with my wiring in the house, my ps4 is connected via ethernet cable, and it is the only thing that disconnects from the internet, i even sent my ps4 to sony and they said they were having similar problems, and so they gave me a replacement one. What do you know i have the exact same problem with this one, i have literally done everything i can to try and fix this for 8 months and its still not working, please someone for the love of god help me. P.S before i got my ps4 i had my ps3 connected via ethernet to the broadband/ router i have now and had absolutely no problems.

  • Frequent internet disconnects for over a year

I have been suffering frequent disconnects from the internet for over a year. Each disconnect lasts for up to two minutes, rarely longer. Sometimes the disconnects have been as frequent as thirty or more times per hour. Sometimes I have no problems for many days.
I'm using HH5 and have Infinity 2 with a typical speed of circa 60mbps. Speed isn't an issue but the frequent disconnects are a pain. BT Broadband support have been unable to see the disconnects happening. As far as they are concerned, the line is fine.
If the disconnect happens when I'm using Google Chrome, I get a status message "Resolving Host" in the bottom left and, after a short delay, a screen appears saying "This webpage is not available. DNS Probe Finished. No Internet." Other devices, including BTTV, either give a message to the effect that there is no internet connection or just "hang". As far as I can tell, all devices, whether wired or wireless, 2.4GHz or 5GHz,, disconnect simultaneously.
I have tried disconnecting every device from the hub except the BTTV and the disconnects still happen.
BT have checked the line countless times, sent an engineer to my house, replaced my home hub three times, I have replaced all cables, replaced the phone/broadband socket, done countless resets etc all to no avail. The HH5 lights don't change colour when the internet connection drops.
After checking the BTCare Community Forums and discovering the event log in the HH5 I discovered that, when the disconnects occur, an "IN: BLOCK [16]..." message appears in the event log for the Firewall of the hub. At the end of this message I have copied a 12 hour firewall event log from today. Every "IN: BLOCK [16]..." event seems to coincide with an internet disconnect so that amounts to circa 40 disconnects in the past 12 hours.
What are these "IN: BLOCK [16]..." messages and why does my internet connection drop every time one of these messages appears? I checked the IP addresses for some of these "IN: BLOCK [16]..." messages. The first IP address in each message I checked was in China. The second IP address for each event I checked is BT in Boston, UK. My suspicion is that the BT server is logging me out every time one of these "IN: BLOCK [16]" events occurs. Logging back into the server then takes up to two minutes and, in the meantime, I have no internet connection.
BT Broadband support in India say that there is nothing they can do to address these internet dropout issues. They can only deal with line or hub faults. Their only suggestion was to disable the firewall on my HH5 but, given all these potential attacks from Chinese IP addresses, I refused to do this.
BTW, the HH5 IP address ending in 65 is my BTTV box.
    I'd be grateful for any help and advice to resolve this issue. Here is the Firewall event log;

Ectophile - thank you for your reply. I tried the quiet line test and the line sounds good. There's no crackle or static. Just a very faint hiss if I turn the volume on my handset up full.
I've had three replacement hubs in the last year or so and they have made no difference to the frequency of the internet drop-outs.
The only fault that has been detected in all of this time was back in January when BTTV 2nd line support in the UK establish a link with my PC and monitored the connection. (They had a lot of difficulty establishing this connection and they were convinced I had no internet connection even though I did at that point). As a result of this monitoring and other testing, they diagnosed a very brief, intermittent drop out in the fibre-optic link between the surface box and the exchange. The 2nd line support engineer commented that this was a very strange fault because the fibre-optic connection normally either works or it doesn't.
He called out a BT engineer to investigate the fibre fault. This engineer told me that he had "reset" the fibre-optic link at the surface box. Having done this, he couldn't find a fault so visited my house, undertook line checks, replaced my HH4 with a HH5, checked out all wiring, tested the socket etc monitored for 20 minutes, couldn't find any further fault and left. The problems have continued however and BT India support just keep running their standard line tests and finding no fault.
I tried running a repeating ping test today using a tool called “WinPing”. I was using my BT email server for the ping test. The ping was set to 1 second intervals with the time-out set to a high level of 3000ms. I wasn’t using the internet at the time so I have no idea whether there is any correlation between the "timed-out" and/or slow response pings and the internet drop-outs that I have been suffering.
    The eight and a half hour test gave an average ping time of 45ms but there was a lot of variability;
    101 pings "timed-out" without a response (>3000ms).
    6 pings were between 2000ms and 2999
    23 pings were between >1500ms and 1999ms
    87 pings were between 1000ms and 1499ms
    139 pings were between 500ms and 999ms
    66 pings were between 250ms and 499ms
    428 pings were between 50ms and 249ms
    680 pings were between 40ms and 49ms
    12,296 pings were between 32ms and 39ms
There were no periods of more than a few seconds where WinPing couldn’t ping the server so this test doesn’t explain why I get the frequent drop-outs of up to 2 minutes unless perhaps the problem is caused by short drop-outs causing my connection to reset? The message I get on my Laptop / Google Chrome when the internet connection drops-out is a “Resolving Host” message at the bottom left and, after a short delay, a screen appears saying "This webpage is not available. DNS Probe Finished. No Internet." Other devices come back with various message to the effect that there is no internet connection, even though the HH5 light remains blue.
Do the ping test results indicate any particular issue or are these results normal?

Can anyone help me?  Why does my ipad kick me out of FB?  Sometimes to the 'settings' page and sometimes to the desk top?  I would like to know why this happens and what I can check or change to make it stop.   I have 50.8 GB of capacity available; it is version IOS 5.1.1; model MC497LL.  It is WIFI and internet via AT&T?   Can anyone give me some clues on what to do; or change in settings???  Thank you very much!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Changing from finite to continuous samples and vice versa?

    Hello,
I have a problem which I'm trying to overcome: I have a measurement system consisting of an analog output and reading two analog inputs. I would like to run it continiously to monitor the current values (without saving the previous data), however, when I click something like a record button, I'd like to start a recording of a predefined period (like a finite samples measurement) and then restarting the monitoring without saving again.
Currently my measurement program is based on the examples "Continuous AO" and AI vis, and are made with continuous sample mode and while loops. How can I insert a record button?
I tried putting event handlers in the measurement loop, however it suspended the loop from running.
I attach a screenshot of my current measurement loop. (With the shift register I tried to read data, however I cannot get it out of the loop, until the loop is stopped)
    Thank you in advance

I have tried adopting something similar, however it doesn't work the way it should. (Or at least the way I think it should) Could you please help me ironing it out? I've seen some vis on the internet with queue-controlled (but only one-way) and tried adopting them.
The MainProgram vi is the app, with some settings (now limited to a signal file selection and channel settings). Then the data acquisition can be started by clicking the Start Acq button.
And here come my problems: first sometimes the queue starts, sometimes it doesn't (or at least it doesn't start the data acquisition). And the main point: I set the sample rate, yet it is acquired at a much-much slower rate (my signal has a period time of 4 seconds, yet it needs at least 20 seconds to get near finishing). And the strangest: sometimes, mostly after some time (about 1-2 min) it hangs and does nothing with the daq (yet labview seems responsive, just my program hangs somewhere).
So now only the controlled acquisition is in the problem and first I don't care about forwarding the data for analysis and saving. (That seems to be the smaller problem).
What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help.
I attach all the files.  (MainProgram is the app itself, MY.SIGNAL is the signal file I want to output.) I use a USB-6211 device. (at work a physical one, at home a simulated one).

  • Created Network and Internet Sharing Problems

    Hello,
I created network with WEP password. I proceeded to turn on internet sharing.
All works great until the iMac goes to sleep.
Once it comes back on the network I created is missing and I have create it all over again.
The internet connection is through ethernet staring into the iMac.
Is there a way to get the iMac to stop forgetting the created network and leave the internet connection on? Even when it's sleeping.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi there,
Is there a reason why you chose WEP? I ask because WEP is an encryption technology that has been cracked so if possible I"d suggest you use WPA or WPA2 encryption instead. Am I correct to assume you don't have a router and all the other computers connect to the internet through the imac? If you don't have a router I'd suggest you buy one, they are not much money and provide excellent protecton from the internet. A router will protect all the computers on your network behind its firewall and would no longer have to connect through the imac.
A couple of things to check:
Go to System Preferences>Network and highlight 'Wireless' on the left side. (Also, if you don't use Bluetooth or any other type of networking listed there delete them from the list leaving only Ethernet and Airport) Uncheck 'ask to join new networks'.
Then click on 'Advanced..' and under the Airport tab make sure only your network is listed in the 'Prefered Networks' window. Under that window check 'remember any network this computer has joined' and uncheck 'disconnect from wireless networks when logging out'.
That's the way I've got my computer set up and I've never lost a connection.

  • Internet disconnects when trying to connect a vpn on a different user account on the same computer

Im trying to have one user account with my real ip address and another user account on windows 8 with a vpn connection. Everytime i switch (i dont logout i just lock the user) then try to connect a vpn on the other user account the internet disconnects
on the other user account. It's like it wants to change my entire internet connection to use the vpn instead of having a seperate connection on each user account. is there a way around this or am i stuck having to use two laptops? I also unchecked
Use default gateway on remote network on the vpn.

    Hi,
Try to temporary disable firewall to see if the same issue occurs.

  • MacBook internet disconnects when I connect BB10 with USB

Everytime I connect my phone to my laptop via the usb (supplied with orignial device) the internet on my MacBook disconnects and I lose my VPN connection.
It seems the Z10 creates a new 'Blackberry' Network connection which overrides my computer settings. If I disable this connection it is simply recreated the next time I connect my Z10 and my internet disconnects and I lose my VPN connection.
Any idea how I can prevent this? I could do with a setting to switch this behaviour on or off rather than the Z10 assuming I want to use it to connect.

    Hey 8lettersuk,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
    Thanks for the question.
I have a few questions before I get started:
    1. Are you using Cisco AnyConnect as the VPN client on your Mac?
    2. What version of BlackBerry 10 are you currently running?  Go to Settings>About to find this information.
I look forward to your reply.
    Cheers.

  • T440p: internet disconnects when using BT mouse

I have the 2x2 Thinkpad wireless card and when I use my bluetooth mouse the internet disconnects and I get a "limited connection". I have the latest drivers for everything.

    Hi iphetamine and Jakoob,
Remember that this is users helping users here, moderated by volunteers like me. Although there is some Lenovo presence, they can't patrol the entire community. They do try to help with some of the broader issues.
Any possibility you're in a marginal WiFi reception area, and Bluetooth interferes with it?
