When I type in a website in the address bar, it doesn't take me to the website I typed in. I hit enter and the green arrow also and it does nothing.

I have to go to google and type in the website from the address bar and go from there. Also the back and forward buttons do not work on any of the betas for FF4.

This type of behaviour can be caused by an incompatible add-on. Follow the procedure in the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article to identify the culprit. In Firefox 4 betas you can use the "Restart with Add-ons Disabled" option in the Help sub-menu to go into safe mode.
If you use AVG and have AVG Safe Search, start by disabling that extension as it has caused problems with the location bar for some people.

  • (Bug report) When creating a new bookmark folder from the address bar right star drop down menu, sometimes a separate previously titled folder is automatically retitled to the new folder's name at the same time that the new folder is created.

I had seen duplicate folders before, but only now just realized when they were being created (during the procedure I just described).

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • When typing in a search in the address bar i get redirected to a search assist by Teoma. How can i stop this

Normally when i type a subject into the address bar i get sent to a website that deals with that subject. For example if i typed in "Iron Man" in the address bar then i would be sent to a movie website with iron man details. Now when i type in a subject on the address bar i get redirected to a search assist website powered by Teoma. I haven't changed my default search and I've never even heard of Teoma so I really cant stand that i get redirected there. if i cant get rid of it then i am getting rid of firefox all together because that was the one feature that it had over internet explorer that really mattered to me. How do i change that

I believe I've figured this out. You probably don't have a virus and there may not be much you can do. What is probably happening here is that the DNS provided by your ISP is trapping the request and redirecting you to the teoma server (run by ask.com).
When you enter "flurdl" into the address bar, first the browser (& network stack) tries to resolve it as a host name into an ip address, by contacting the DNS server. If it resolves to an ip address, the connection proceeds. If DNS replies there is no such host, the browser passes it onto your search provider to perform a search.
Your ISP has cut a deal with teoma such that when there is no host, instead of returning that, they return the teoma address. Your browser connects to that address and teoma returns its search page. So your browser never realizes it needs to search; it thinks it hit a valid page.
Why do they do this? Because the search engine gets paid for the "preferred" entries in the search result.
Your options are probably twofold: 1) don't search from the address bar, use the search bar instead. 2) Find another more honest DNS provider and configure it explicitly in your network settings.

  • How do I copy and paste the address bar and have it show as an 'url'? It copies as black type and not as a link.

When I copy and paste the address bar it doesn't show as a blue link in the pasted document. I also have Internet Explorer and it works fine. Do I have a setting on firefox that needs changing?

  • I cannot upgrade past 28 my dropdown menu will not work in the address bar I can not search from address bar stuck at home page

Once I open firefox browser with anything past 28.0 my browser becomes a paperweight no searches from the address bar. Not from the list of drop downs, not from typing the address in the bar. Stuck to the home page it had as default. Firefox does an update every time I close it forcing me to return to 28.0 or through my F--n computer in the trash. Noticed others had this problem but got only questions with no help coming from firefox. This is a Vista 64 bit if that maters. I kinda think maybe nothing past 28 will work but with Vista but no one from firefox will step up and say that.

Type '''about:addons'''<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager.
    Hot key; '''<Control>''(Mac:<Command>)''<Shift> A)'''
In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select '''Extensions.'''
Disable a few add-ons, then '''Restart Firefox.'''
Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause
Firefox issues. '''Disable All of them.'''
If the problem continues, disable some more (restarting FF). Continue until
the problem is gone. After, you know what group is causing the issue.
Re-enable the last group '''ONE AT A TIME''' (restarting FF) until the problem returns.
Once you think you found the problem, disable that and re-enable all the
others, then restart again. Let us know who the suspect is detective.

  • Firefox doesn't delete the browsing history in the address bar

No matter what you do with Firefox in clearing the browsing history by going to History -> Clear Recent History and deleting everything or resetting FF by going to Troubleshooting information, Firefox doesn't delete the browsing history. The website you have browsed still appear in the address bar.
Several people already have complained about this issue (see thread https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/939028) and the answer from the Firefox staff is that there is got to be a malware. This is not true, I've seen versions of Firefox in clean computers both Windows and Mac with Firefox doing the same thing, or more like not doing what it's supposed to do: clean the browsing history.
How unsafe is that. Where is your privacy? Firefox has to find a way to fix this glitch. Something tells me they're doing it on purpose because it hasn't been fixed after the complains.

You can delete the places.sqlite file if you aren't able to clear all history.

  • How can I add the address bar that I've removed before ?

I removed address bar from my Firefox but now I can't bring it back . when I right click on the top bars, it doesn't show any choice to bring the address bar back !
Could you please help me ?

    * If on Windows in Firefox 3.6 the menu bar is hidden then press and hold the Alt key down, that should make the "Menu Bar" appear.
    * Go to "View > Toolbars" and put a check-mark for "Menu Bar" to make that permanent. See [[Menu bar is missing]]).
    * Make sure that you have the ''Navigation Toolbar'' and other toolbars visible: "View > Toolbars"
    * If items are missing then see if you can find them in the "View > Toolbars > Customize" window.
    * If you see the item in the Customize window then drag it back from the Customize window to the Navigation toolbar.
    * If you do not see that item then click the "Restore Default Set" button in the "View > Toolbars > Customize" window.

  • Removing the search bar whilst keeping the address bar?

I've been using Firefox but since updating to SL I'm wanting to go back to Safari. In previous versions I would remove the search bar and keep the address bar, (as I do in all browsers because I don't use the search bar, instead I search via keywords in the address bar), but that doesn't seem to be possible any more.
Why has Apple decided to join the two bars together!? It's random and really annoying.
Is there any way I can get rid of the search bar but keep the address bar?

It's hard to please everyone. Apple are obviously more than happy with the interface of Safari 4 at the moment and that is reflected in the millions upon millions of downloads of it, both for OSX and for Windows. These forums only represent issues from a very miniscule percentage of users who are having some issue or dislike some aspect of the software. You will find very few positive comments here as it is a troubleshooting and support forum. This is the first time I have heard anybody complain about this feature (or lack of) so it may well pay to send it through to Apple via the Bug reporter up in your right top corner of the browser.
    Cheers

  • UserId & Password in the address bar of the browser

The address bar of the web browser running a form shows the user id and the password? How to hide them?

If you don't specify a username and password on the URL, the user has to provide one. This one is not shown in the address bar. E.g. you can start a form like this:
    http://server:8888/forms90/f90servlet?form=logon.fmx
and the user will be prompted for a username and password.
You can also call the form like this to automatically log in:
    http://server:8888/forms90/f90servlet?form=logon.fmx&userid=un/pw@db
but the un/pw are shown in the address bar.

  • Firefox doesn't redirect us to the website when we type the name of the website in the address bar

Before when I typed orkut in the address bar of Firefox 3.6 and press enter, it automatically goes to that site by adding www & .com . But now when I type it in the address bar, it takes me to Google search results for orkut and then from there I have to click on the website. Can anyone help me solve this problem? This happedned after I deleted my Default Profile of my Firefox.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND MAY GOD BLESS YOU! THAT SOLVED MY PROBLEM! :D

  • When I enter log on details in a website what I type appears in the address bar

The first character I type appears in the website's log in space, the next characters start appearing in the address bar, so i cannot log in.

    Hello,
Does this happen with all websites or just one?
Please '''try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which temporarily disables most add-ons.
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.
