When I want to download a free app I am required to give my credit card details. Why if the app is free?.

I am not prepared to give my credit card details for a free app. These days I don't trust anyone with my bank details if I am not making a purchase & the app is free.

Is it an account that hasn't been used in the store before, and if so how did you create it ? Unless the instructions on this page are followed when creating an account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534
then credit card details will need to be entered before the account can be used to download any item from the store (you should be able to remove credit card details after entering them).
If you are being prompted to review your account then you could see if this post by mountaingoatgirl lets you do so without needing to enter credit card details : https://discussions.apple.com/message/24303054
If not then you will either need to enter credit card details or create a new account (and use the instructions on that HT2534 page when creating it).

  • Why do you need to put credit card details in to the app store when you may want to simply obtain free items in the beginning?

Apple clearly is a leader and thankfully are bringing fantastic products and initiatives to the market.
I certainly hope that the company doesn't get arrogant like it seems to do when forcing people trying to get free apps to put in credit card details.
I suspect it wouldn't be too much work to allow users to try it out first by using some free apps and when they are personally ready they can purchase to their little hearts desire.
Poor showing from this perspecitive and easy to fix.

Never put your credit card info into iTunes as Apple credit card security is horrible.  There are many cases of credit card problems with Apple. My credit card was compromised 2 weeks after creating an Apple account. That was the ONLY online usage of my credit card.
Apple does NOT follow PCI compliance which is the credit card industry standards for credit card data protection.  It requires all companies to NOT store credit card information online because (surprise, surprise Apple!) it can be hacked.
Why does Apple need to store the credit card data and put the information at risk and why do they not follow industry (PCI Compliance) guidelines - especially for free aps or updates?

Sorry, but you can't. The process only works when creating a new Apple ID. With an existing ID you'll have to provide a payment method at least temporarily.

  • HT1338 Is the only way to get a software update through the Apple Store where you have to give a credit card?  I thought system updates are free.  I don't want to leave a credit card number with Apple.

This may also help. Someone in another thread typed the above link only works if you haven't established your account, but when I just checked my account the "None" button was there?:

It's in the article.  You must first sign-out your current account, then go to App store to purchase a Free App.  It will ask you to either Sign in or create a new AppleID.  That's when you start creating a new AppleaID and NONE will be available as a payment option.

  • I've bought books and now want to buy another but don´t accept my credit card details, why?

I've bought books and now want to buy another but don´t accept my credit card details, why?

Nobody here could possibly know why your credit card is not being accepted. We don't work for Apple, we are just other users voulnteering out time to help.
Did you get any message from when you attempted to make the purchase? Did you review your credit card details in your iTunes account? Did your crest card expire and you forgot about it?

You can create an iTune and App Store account without credit card details
    1. Sign out of current Apple ID if you are sign-in to one (important)
    2. Go to App Store and select a free app
    3. Tap INSTALL APP
    4. Create New Apple ID
    5. Confirm Your Country
    6. Agree with Terms and Conditions
    7. Fill in your Apple ID and Password (you must create a new Apple ID; don't use your old Apple ID)
    8. Create and answer your secret question
    9. Select NONE for Payment Method
    10. Fill in Billing Address
    11. Submit application for new Apple ID

If you have an existing ID, & you don't want to use a credit card, you'll have to redeem an iTunes gift card. If you don't want to do that, you'll have to create a new ID by following the directions here, EXACTLY:

  • Why do I need to give my credit card details to get a free app?

I just want a free app from Twitter, but cannot seem to download it without giving my card details. Is this correct?

    Hello pamelafromCornwall,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
As the article below states you do need to have payment information on file if you have already created an Apple ID and are using the iTunes Store or App Store for the first time.  If you want to remove your payment information afterwards, you can follow the steps in the article below to do so.
Create an iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store account without a credit card or other payment method

I am buying this free game and after i sign in it says This apple ID has not yet been used in the itunes store tap review to sign in.  It asks for my credit card number but its free so i dont want to put down my credit card number!!!

Sorry, The only way to get an account is by using a credit card but after you put it in and finish completing your account you can take it right off and Apple won't mind, they just don't want to many peple creating account if they are never going to use them.

  • HT1918 when I click on the payment type it only gives me credit card options instead of the none option . Any idea how to set the account without a credit card?

I am trying to set the account so that there is no credit card associated with it. Anyone know how to do this

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Open iTunes and navigate to the app store. Select a free app to download. A simple way to do this is to scroll down to the top free apps box on the right hand side, hover your mouse over the first item and click on the free button that appears when you hover over it.
A pop up will open asking you to sign in with your Apple ID click "create new account", click continue to create your account. Check the box to accept the store terms and conditions and click continue.
Enter your email address, password, security question, and date of birth, click continue. Now, you will be asked to provide a payment method. Note now that the last option says "none".

  • HT1918 why am i finding it so hard to change my credit card details to buy an app from your store,iv been sat here for an hour trying and it wont except my new details

iv tried and done everything that apple has asked to no avail, its not fort knox it should be simple enough, and i cant stress enough how annoying it is the amount of times im asked to sign in

It only get worst when you upgrade to Lion on a 10.5 era machine.
IMO get the 10.6 disk upgrade to 10.6.3 and nearly all your presently installed software will work, perhaps with a slight update. Software Update to 10.6.8. Stay there.
Don't upgrade to 10.7, most all your 10.5 instlaled software will cease to function and you'll be really yelling at Apple. Also 10.7 is slower than 10.6 and really needs 4GB of RAM
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
And to top it all off, 10.8 is being released in a few months, so your behind again.
Not only that 10.8 more often that  not run on your hardware as it's too old, so what's the use?
Another pain? Apple only supports the last two operating system versions in circulation, so your 10.5 machine is currently insecure, don't do any online banking or high value credit cards etc, sensitive information.
Apple is committing corporate suicide to miilk as many users as possible, their market share has not increased despite all the sales increases because they simply don't care for anyone who can't replace their machines every two or three years when AppleCare expires.
Apple is no longer a "computer company" more like a rich man's disposable computing tech-toy company.
