Which MBP (size-wise)?

Should I get the 15" or 17" MacBook Pro? I will mainly be using it for browsing, gaming, photo-editing, chatting, movies, etc. and I don't know if I should get the 15 or 17 inch model.... also, should I go for the 8GB of RAM upgrade... or is 4GB enough for what I will be doing? Also, where can I get windows 7 retail for bootcamp?
Thanks.
PS - does anyone know which size GaGa's laptop is? It was in an hbo teaser, and I would just like to know... thanks

AJ,
I have the 15" inch MacBook Pro and I totally recommend it over the 17" MacBook Pro.The 15" MacBook Pro is right in the middle of the MacBook Pro product line-up and it operates perfectly fine for the things you wanna use it for.The 13" MacBook Pro is a let down because if you like to keep up with apple,it needs to updraded frequently and besides,it's always behind on processing technology, but if you don't have very much money and your a college student, then I owuld recommend it.The 17" MacBook Pro is relativley large. The 17" is kind of like a hassle because of the size of it and it's not much better than the MacBook Pro,but I would recommend it to you if your interested in having a laptop that you won't move around very often.Overall,I would recommend to you the 15" MacBook Pro.The 15" is just right because of the size and protability of the machine.I have a boot camp partition with Windows 7 installed on it and I use netflix via the Windows Media Center and movies play at an excellent rate of speed and it's even better watching a movie on a purchased DVD on the Apple DVD Player and it doesn't lag at all even with some simple browsing applications open such as Safari.Chatting on the 15" is also convienient with a new feature that Apple released called FaceTime. With FaceTime, you can chat with others that have an iDevice and a registered FaceTime account. In case you use a program like Skype, that's also available for Apple's Mac OS X and would be great for video chatting and not to mention that iChat is another great video chat client for Mac.If you don't already know, the MacBook Pros already have built in "iSight" cameras built in.Photo-editting is great on a mac system with the applications that are available for it such as Adobe Photoshop.Gaming is coming along great with a new app hub called the Apple Mac App Store. This application allows developers to publish there newly optimized for Mac OS X games and other content all into 1 market that allows a user to choose from one of the most excellent games out there for the Macintosh operating system. You can also play a lot of your Windows games on your mac with boot camp which allows you to partition your hard drive for Windows,so you can run your Windows programs natively on your Mac,but if you do choose to do gaming frequently on a Mac,then try upgrading the RAM on your MacBook Pro 15" before purchasing it with only 4GB DDR3.Before I end my recommendation,I wanna suggest that you get a slot state hard drive (SSD) if you have enough for it.A solid state hard drive on the MacBook Pro is very convienient to boost the overall performance on the MacBook Pro.I Hope This Helps!

    Shahzaib isamil

    Hi, Shazaib,
Thanks for posting the CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements: tha helps a lot!
So you want one row of output for every color, whether that color is found with a given style in any table or not, is that right?
For example, none of the tables have style=7788 and color='Blue' on the same row, but you still want a row of output with that combination, and 0 for all the sums.
To do that, cross-join the d_style and d_color tables, then outer-join the other tables to them:
    SELECT       s.d_style_no               AS style_no
    ,       c.color_name               AS color
    ,       NVL (SUM (t.size_1), 0)     AS sum_stitch_size_1
    ,       NVL (SUM (d.size_1), 0)     AS sum_dispatch_size_1
    ,       NVL (SUM (r.size_1), 0)     AS sum_return_qty
    ,       NVL (SUM (t.size_1), 0)
         + NVL (SUM (r.size_1), 0)
         - NVL (SUM (d.size_1), 0)         AS bal
    FROM    d_style                  s
    JOIN     d_color               c     ON     s.d_style_no = '7788'
    LEFT OUTER JOIN     d_stitch     t     ON     t.stitch_color_name     = c.color_name
                                     AND     t.d_stitch_style_no     = s.d_style_no
    LEFT OUTER JOIN     d_dispatch     d     ON     d.dispatch_color_name     = c.color_name
                                     AND     d.d_dispatch_style_no     = s.d_style_no
    LEFT OUTER JOIN     d_return     r     ON     r.return_color_name     = c.color_name
                                     AND     r.d_return_style_no     = s.d_style_no
    WHERE       COALESCE ( t.d_stitch_style_no
                   , d.d_dispatch_style_no
                 , r.d_return_style_no
                   ) = 7788
    GROUP BY  s.d_style_no
    ,       c.color_name
    ORDER BY  s.d_style_no
;The output you posted has only 3 rows, all for style=7788. I assume that you want the query to include only a given style, which you will hard-code (as I did above) or pass as a parameter.
If you want to include all styles, and the 3 rows of output you posted were just a sub-set of the 9 rows of output you really want, then change the join between d_style and d_color to an explicit CROSS JOIN:
    FROM             d_style          s
    CROSS JOIN     d_color          c
    ...

  • Which MBP??????

Guys im in need of help,i have a MPB 13'' mid 2010, shopping for a new mac but im caught up in a dilemma, i dont know which MBP to get, if i go retina i lose storage space and thinking about carrying a hard drive with all my media on is a little of a burdon, my firewire port i lose i know there is a converter from thunderbolt Q1- How stable is that converter, Q2- Power/Reseloution or Storage? Q3- how do you guys rate the MPB MD101 13'
thanks your advice will be much apreciated

Get a portable HD.  Do you know how small even the slim 2TB Toshibas are? Hardly any burden.
nobody here YET has the new Retina model, so asking about rating it, is speculative.
In the case of a Macbook Air or Macbook Pro Retina with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace.  You should never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their computers internal HD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your macbook has a HD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your computer to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.

  • AFS Size wise pricing detail

    Dear All
I am working in ECC 6.00 with AFS. I want to know how to maintain size wise price in Purchase Order.
    Shobana

    Dear Shobhana,
The pricing determination procedure in AFS is same as that of the R/3 pricing determination for the purchase order.
Additionally, if we want to have the size wise prices, you have to do the following..
In SPRO- IMG- MM - Purchasing - Conditions - Define Price Determination Process - Define AFS condition types..
Here, against your condition type, you have to check the indicator - Dim.Cond.
In addition to that, make grid as one entry in your access sequnece, and maintain the condition record for the same..
    Hope this clarifies you..
(Please close the thread, if this is answered)
    Thanks,

  • Which is Performance wise better MOVE or MOVE CORRESPONDING ...

Which is Performance wise better ...
    MOVE or MOVE CORRESPONDING .

    > A

    > * access path and indexes
Indexes and hence access paths are defined when you design the data model. They are part of the model design.
    > * too large numbers of records or executions
consider a datawarehouse environment - you have to deal with huge loads of data. a Million records are considered "small" here. Terms like "small" or "large"  are depending on the context you are working in.
If you never heard of Star transformation, Partitioning and Parallel Query you will get lost here!
OLTP is different: you have short transactions, but a huge number of concurrent users.
You would not even consider Bitmap indexes in an OLTP environment - but maybe a design that evenly distributes data blocks over several files for avoiding hot spots on heavily used tables.
    > * processing of internal tables => no quadratic coding

sorry, it's all about the data model design - sure you have to tune later in the development but you really can't tune successfully on a  BAD data model ... you have to redesign.
If the model is good there is a chance the developers chooses the worst access to it , but then you have the potential to tune with success because your model allows for a better access strategy.
The decisions you make in the design phase are detemining the potential for tuning later.
    >
    > * database does not what you expect
I call this the black box view: The developer is not interested in the underlying database.
Why we have different DB vendors if they would all behave the same way? I.e. compare concurrency
and consistency implementations in various DB's - totally different.  You can't simply apply your working knowledge from one database to another DB product. I learned the hard way while implementing on INFORMIX and ORACLE...

  • Which MBP retina to buy?

Hello everyone. I'd like to buy a new Macbook Pro Retina, the 13 inch one, but I'm not sure which one to buy. They're both the same price.
    Here's the first one:
2.5GHz Intel Core i5 (dual-core) with Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
    8GB DDR3 memory | 512GB flash storage
    And the second one:
2.9GHz Intel Core i7 (dual-core) with Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    8GB DDR3 memory | 256GB flash storage
I would also like to know if you think that the Haswell update is really worth waiting or if it's going to be very similar to the current one. By the way, since I'm going to college and I'm starting school in August, I would like to have my new laptop before I enter.
I'm an average user, I don't game or download movies, but I do have lots of pictures in my laptop. I'll be using it for personal use and school, and I plan to run Windows in it, too. I own a 2008 Macbook that has 160 GB of storage and it's already full and very very slow. I want to upgrade and I'm sure that I want a rMBP but I don't know which one is best for me.
Can you guide me a little bit here, please?
    Thank you

If your concern is the storage you should think and see the way you keep things. Are you a guy who keeps everything including movies, music, or any other downloaded media on its laptop well the SSD is not the best choice for you at all. But if you could manage keeping your media on your external hard drives then SSD storage is the best one and 256G is going to be even more for you. I have all Microsoft Office 2011, whole Adobe CS5.5 master collection, and VMWare fusion with Windows 7 on it and it's near to 80G. What else you want to install?
But it's a big difference between 15-inch MBP and 13-inch MBP. When you mentioned size of the screen there is no reason to think of retina display. First think of the size and what you miss with 13-inch MBP and what you get from 15-inch one.
Comparing base-line MBP 15-inch with base-line MBP with retina display is a relevant comparison. You want my opinion, change the RAM of MBPR to 16G and you see it's cheaper that MBP 15-inch baseline with 256G SSD and increasing RAM to 8G.(please do not remind me I can find RAM and SSD cheaper from outside!)
I would go with the retina one if you come down to 15-inch non-retina and retina MBP baseline. But think of your needs and what you do on a regular bases, the retina baseline with 16G RAM don't even need to be upgraded! A day you need to upgrade that spec I'm sure you'd rather buy another machine
    Good luck.

  • My next iMac-- which graphics card; which display size?

    Hi all,
I'd like some advice in choosing my next iMac, specifically regarding the graphics card and the display size.
    Graphics Card:
I'm not a gamer nor am I doing any 3D animation. Is there any other reason to upgrade the graphics card? I DO want the best possible video playback (QT movies), but I don't know if the graphics card has any bearing on video playback quality.
    Display size:
Aside from the obvious differences in resolution, do any of the three displays sizes (17,20,24) have any history of being better or more reliable?
Thanks in advance for any tips

Your needs will better dictate which model is best.
Video playback of QuickTine movies will not be affected by upgrading to the 24" with the nVidia chip.
No 3D gaming or animation means no need for a higher end graphics card. In my case, the x1600 ATi in the original Core Duo 20" is more than sufficient for everything I've thrown at it so far including full resolution "Call of Duty".
For your use, you may not need the extra VRAM but I personally would bump it up to 256MB though. Adding an external monitor will split the total VRAM between the two monitors and with Apple continually moving a lot of Mac OS X's graphical features to the GPU, the extra memory may be a blessing.
    Display Size:
I believe that reliability between the three models is pretty much the same.
The advantage to the 24" is, of course, the extra screen real estate and resolution. However The price difference between the 20" and 24" could allow you to go with the 20" model and add an external LCD for a dual screen setup (if space permits).
Weigh your needs - now and the immediate future - and then look at both models in person if possible.

  • Which MBP is better for Final Cut Pro?

    Hi Everyone,
I'm looking to replace my 2010 MacBook Pro 13" on a budget. I'd like to get a retina 13" macbook pro, either the refurb 2012 with 8GB ram and the i5, or the refurb 2013 with 4GB ram, i5 and the new Intel Iris graphics card. Which is better for medium to intense final cut pro, photoshop, and dreamweaver work? Does the Intel Iris card make a big difference or should I be getting more RAM?
    Thanks

First, check the Model Identifier in your Mac's Apple Menu > 'About this Mac' > 'More info' > 'System Report' > 'Hardware Overview'
Next, check OWC to find out exactly how much RAM your proposed MBPs can take. Apple gives correct specs at time of development. Later, larger RAM is developed that will work with some Mac models.
For video, FCPX will use as many processor cores as are available. It will use all 12 cores of the latest Mac Pro. This makes FXPX run very fast. Most other programs don't use multiple cores at all and a few only use a couple of cores. With more cores comes slower clock speed, which is needed by programs that dont use multiple cores.
Eventually, all high-end programs will use multiple cores, so, if you have the option, get as many cores as you can with your current purchase. This will especially benefit FCPX immediatly, it will help higher-end programs later, and the slower clock speed won't really affect the more run-of-the-mill programs (like word processing) because clock speeds are pretty reasonable these days (for a laugh, read this in fifty years time).
Get the minimum RAM available because you can upgrade later and will probably have to sacrifice the RAM you have. Third party RAM (again, you can check OWC) is cheaper than buying it with your computer pruchase. Make sure it's designed for your Mac.
You can use Activity Monitor to check if FCPX (or any program) is paging. You don't want this. It means it is writing to disk—effectively virtual memory—that should be handled in RAM. This is very slow and inefficient. It only does that when it needs more RAM than is available. That's when you upgrade your RAM (which could be immediatly after you buy).
The single most effective thing you can do to get FCPX to perform better on an existing computer (or any comuter) is to swap your hard drive for an SSD. SSDs read and write so fast compared to even the fastest hard drive that you can do multicam edits in real time without dropping frames. Rendering is a lot faster becuse it writes the render to disk, and so is launching and exporting (or, as Apple insists, 'Sharing'), which also writes to disk. SSDs may seem expensive (they are coming down in price), but the productivity gains are absolutly worth it.

  • Which webpage size is the "most normal" to use?

    Hey everyone out there.
I'm creating a webpage in Muse. In the Plan-part of the program the page is shown just as I want it, but when I upload it on my browser it looks all wrong.
It's like my page is too small for the browser, because big white gaps are shown in both the left and the right side. Besides, when I make my browser widescreen, there is also a gap between the footer and the bottom of the browser.
Anyone out there who know what to do? Or if there is a size for the webpage which is best to use, so it is shown normally in the browser?
My webpage currently has the size W:1220px H:768px

    Hi,
Can you please share the Url of your website so that we can have a look and see what is the issue that you are facing.
And regarding the size of the webpage , please refer to this link :- http://helpx.adobe.com/muse/topics/page-layout.html

  • Which mbp models support multi-touch under 10.6?

I have been googling around looking for an answer to this question but haven't found an authoritative answer, just conjecture.
I wonder if someone from Apple could post the specific models which will support multi-touch under Snow Leopard. Mine is a MacbookPro 3,1 and I would like to know if it is possible to enable multi touch.

    So this page
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/refinements/enhancements-refinements.html
    which says:
    Multi-Touch gestures in
    older Mac models.
All Mac notebooks with Multi-Touch trackpads now support three- and four-finger gestures.
Was a lie? Cause my mbp has what seems like multi-touch (two-finger scrolling)... Or does multi-touch have a more specific definition?

  • Which HDD size is compatible with my Satellite A100-771

    Hey Guys,
is there a limit of HDD size for my A100-771?
And which type of HDD I need? IDE or SATA?
    Thanks a lot.
    Eathen.

    Hi Eathen,
    > And which type of HDD I need? IDE or SATA?
You should check the preinstalled HDD. So you can identify if your notebook has IDE or SATA interface. That takes only few minutes. ;)
On SATA interface there is no capacity limit. That means you can use every HDD that you want. I can recommend a model with 5400rpm. This is a good compromise between performance and noise/power.

  • Which "publish size" to select when sharing video for YouTube

    iMovie gives you 2 size options to choose from: 480 x 360, or 640 x 480.
    which one do you recommend?
of course, it would be nice for iPhone users to see it, which leads me to 480 x 360. but at that smaller size, will there be enough resolution for people to enlarge it YouTube player?
my movie was created at 4:3 standard setting.
    Thanks.

You can actually get the 640x480 onto an iPhone, but the big issue is file size - it'll be roughly 80% bigger than the smaller version.
Given the limits of Youtube, I generally use the smaller size. Try it and see - if you're not happy, reshare at the larger size

  • MBP size compared to MB/12" Powerbook

    Hi
was just wondering how much bigger a new MBP is compared to a macbook or a 12"powerbook. i owned an old 12" powerbook and loved its size as it was so portable. anyone who has owned or used a smaller notebook and has also used a MBP 15", how much bigger are 15" MBP's compared to mb in size and are they not as easy to carry around to college at home etc.
    Thanks

Im not so sure about they 15inch, MBP but i know my 17inch gets warm to - hot depending on what i am doing, itunes, and surfing the web i can leave it on my lap, sometime i use a cooling pad just so im not cutting off the airflow. Under someload the notebook can get hot only above the F-keys, from what i understand its like this on the 15inch, but the whole body gets a bit warmer. I was worried about the same issuses and i have found that i can live with this computer being warm, it would be nicer if it was cooler but its not that big of a deal.
Btw using coreduo temp i run between 50C as warm and 74C hot so its not to bad.

  • Need opinions as to which MBP to get

    Hey everyone,
I'm new here, so forgive me if I break any rules here, and if this thread is in the wrong place I am sorry. I'm a senior in high school right now, and I am looking to get a MBP for college. For school, we are issued a Macbook and we will have to return it at the end of the year. The specs:
    Version 10.6.4
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Because we have to return it at the end of the year, I was looking for to buy a MBP. I was looking at the $1799 MBP but I wanted to know if the speeds with be noticeably faster than an IC2D/if this would be the best choice.
Basically what I would want to use the laptop for would be schoolwork first (writing papers, powerpoints etc),
then some gaming (Starcraft 2 etc). I also like to record music in Garageband, and edit videos and upload them to YouTube, and when I upload them, it is in bulk; many 10 minute videos in HD.
Basically, should I get that MBP now based on what I am wanted to use it for, or should I wait and see what they have in store with the faster models/if I even need them.
If I could get some opinions and ideas, that would be greatly appreciated! Again, sorry if I have broken any rules.

Not knowing all the details, the entire scenario raises some potential concerns and consideration.
    First the concerns:
"For school, we are issued a Macbook and we will have to return it at the end of the year." What does that entail? Do you wipe the hard drive and then give it back to the school? Over the course of a semester or year, I would expect that you will be placing some rather confidential info on the system. I would not want to just hand this back to anyone without wiping the drive - the right way.
Also, then you get to your second year. What happens then - they give you a new one that also has to be turned back in? So what happens to all the files that you may want to keep throughout your education? Guessing maybe a backup would be a good idea - perhaps Time Machine.
    Considerations:
What are you going to school for? If you are going into engineering, computer science, or actually many degrees that may eventually require more than your initial considerations for use, then a MBP would start to look that much more appealing. Of course there is the issue of what one can afford or what you want to spend. But if you did purchase a higher end MBP then it would likely take you through a 4 year program without a hitch and although it might represent a one-time higher entry cost, you would probably not have to be concerned about getting another one until you graduated, or even after.
I mentioned the below comment in another post, but it may also apply to your situation:
If you opted for the 8GB then you might want to consider the 4GB (save $400) and install an 8GB upgrade yourself (seems like the "do it yourself option" is about half, or close to it, so maybe could save $200 in total if that is part of your configuration - enough for the i7 without remorse). Then if you are really savvy you could sell the 4GB off, some places may even offer a rebate if you buy an 8GB RAM upgrade and send in the 4GB. I have just read about hem - goggle at your pleasure. On the flip side of this, I am not sure if upgrading the RAM yourself has any ramifications as far as AppleCare is concerned, or if you even were going to purchase that (which also seems, in general, highly recommend).
If this is available route, make sure you read the AppleCare terms and conditions and likely a good chat with an AppleCare rep would settle the issue without ado.
But, I would also qualify this to your situation. You could just get 4GB now and see if you even need the 8GB and then install that as needed.
And just to throw in another 2nd hand comment. My nephew is going through a 4 year degree. Since I am also researching and interested in getting a MBP (please see my post for own particular questions http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2612396&tstart=0), I asked him what the kids at his college were using - which was more popular the Macbook or MBP. Unequivocally, he said that the MBP was the definitive choice. He is not at a "rich kids school" and many of his friends who have MBP are in business majors, which I would make a general statement and assume require less computing power than someone in an engineering or cs discipline, where much of the focus is actually on computers and use, not just using a computer for the standard applications and recreational use.
Hope this helps or at least gives you more to think about. Good luck in school.
