Why do 100 patterns occupy 400MB of my RAM?

I am making heavy use of IMAQ pattern matching, getting the software to automatically generate patterns.
The pattern files are typically around 10K, but when I load less than a hundred my machine (Win NT4, 256MB RAM,Labview 5.1) grinds to a halt. On a second machine with "only" 128 MB RAM, it tells me it can't complete the operation! Is it a reverse zip effect or what?
Is there a limit to the number of patterns I can load in memory?

here is the evidence... (we tried it on three different computers all running WIN NT4, SP5 or 6)

  • Why is 100% scanned image not = to 100% zoom in CS5??

    Using OS X 10.6.7 and CS5 Extended: I am having full size patterns scanned by a reprographics company as tif files. On average the full size patterns will be from 40" to 60" (100%). Yet when I open them with CS5 and zoom to 100 % in order to 'clean up' the designs on the pattern, the image is way larger than the hard copy pattern - more like 500%. I've noticed in one instance that zooming to 33% is closer to actual size. The image file from the full size scan opens as 2% .tif(Bitmap). How is it that 33% zoom gives me closer to actual (scanned image) than the 100% that I would expect? Thanks to anyone who can help clear this up for me.

    100% means actual pixels, not actual size of the item being scanned. If your monitor displays  100 pixels per inch an image scanned at 300 ppi will look three times larger than actual at 100%.

  • Why is Professional Quality occupying less memory space than Best Perforrmance ?

    Hi there,
    I am confused about Best Performance (BP) and Professional Quality (PQ) and not sure if I understand what I am reading correctly about the Encoding ( iDVD > Preference > Projects > Encoding )
    If I understand correctly, if we set the encoding to Professional Quality, it will give us a better quality but takes twice as long to burn because it did a two-pass instead instead of one.
    I tried both Best Performance (BP) and Professional Quality (PQ) and this are the results:
    Best performance: (1) 94 mins - 5.3 GB
    but when I tried Professional Quality, it is only 3GB
    Questions:
    1) if PQ is higher quality than BP, then why is this that PQ occupy less space ?
    2) In Project > Project Info, i found that in in BP, the green bar in the Quality is all fully green in color but the same bar is 2/3 green and 1/3 yellow in PQ.
    From the above observation (1) & (2), is it true then that PQ is higher quality than BP
    3) If in BP, the size as indicated is 5.3 GB, then how is this gonna fit into the DVD when the space in the DVD is only 4.7 GB ?
    Thanks

    Professional Quality is a two pass encoding process.  The firstr pass is to determine which of the material can sustain a higher degree of compresson, i.e. slideshows from still photos, slow portions of videos, etc. and which require less compression, i.e. that part of a video with rapid movement) for optimal image qualitty.  The second pass does the encoding,
    The other two encoding settings are fixed compression encodeing.
    3 - If in BP, the size as indicated is 5.3 GB, then how is this gonna fit into the DVD when the space in the DVD is only 4.7 GB ?
    Regardless of what we've been led to believe in life, with iDVD size does not matter.  It's total playing time, both media AND menus, that determines what goes on an iDVD disk.
    Single layer disks can hold up to 60 minutes total playing time at Best Performance and 120 minutes with High Quality and Professional Quality.

  • Why do my pattern swatch colours print differently to rest of my artwork

    I have some 2 coluor artwork consisting of 2 x pantone colours purple and grey.
    Within the artwork is a stripe pattern swatch consisting of the same colours. On screen the colours are fine and I've checked all the colour settings and these are fine too.
    Why however when i print the artwork does the pattern print in a different colour???
    Please help as I'm going out of my mind with this one.!
    Anthony

    I am having exactly the same problem.
    The colours of a pattern fill print very differently when it is expanded.
    All the colours in the pattern swatch are CMYK. They look identical on screen when the pattern fill is expanded.
    When printed, the mustard yellow, the appley-lime green, and the purpley-grey look completely different.
    I'm using CS6 Illustrator, FOGRA39. I'm wondering if this is a printer issue maybe?
    This is really frustrating and very worrying as I use pattern swatches a lot, and colours need to stay the same as they are approved.
    I've found this thread and another one from 2010 with what sounds like the same issue (Pattern Swatch Colours) but neither have been resolved.
    Please help if you have any ideas!

  • Why errors with patterns in CS6?

    At least once a week, I get an error message that Adobe CS6 has to close down and that I should do a reinstallation of the program and the help files.  This happens when I am adding a new layer pattern or heavy use of the gold styles on a file.  This was a constant with CS3 and that is why I finally gave up the ghost and bought CS6; now it is happening once again. I cannot be the only user having this problem but haven't seen it when I do a search.
    I always appreciate the help you all give me.
    PS:  Do I need to deactivate and reinstall CS6, really?  I hate setting everything back the way I want it and try my best to get by without the reinstall. LOL!

    Well, it must be nice to be so positive about something that you have to get rude when answering.  I was sent to that particular forum when I asked for help about whether I needed to do the uninstall then reinstall to satisfy the error.  Forgive me for being an ordinary nerd not an extraordinary one like you! And as far as my workflow is concerned, how much could that impact what i am doing if I am only adding a pattern layer to a single layer document (if you have trouble adding that it is 2 layers total on completion of the task)!  My oper system is Win7 Service pack 1 and:
    Now that you have the info could you kindly send me somewhere I can get the help I need or at least an answer to the uninstall and reinstall question?
    Thank you,

  • Why is 100% Quality When Exporting to JPEG in LR 2.0 so Low?

    I would like to export some pictures in LR 2.0 as high quality JPEGs so that I can upload in a Kodak website for printing.
    As background, I am processing with RAW files from a Nikon SLR in LR 2.0.  Each raw file downloaded from the camera is approximately 15MB.
    When I choose File ==> Export with Preset ==> Burn Full-Sized JPEGs, the file size is what I would expect at approximately 7MB.
    However, when I choose File ==> Export (with a quality level of 100), the file size is about 350KB.  Width/Height is 640x640 and Resolution is 300ppi.
    Am I missing something?  I would like to find something between the 350KB and 7MB file size.  When I try to download the 350KB files, Kodak warns me that these are "low quality" files that may not print well.  The 7MB files are extremely large and are combersome to download in large quanities.
    Thanks for any help provided.

    John

    Thanks Ian!
    Unchecking the "Resize-to-Fit" box fixed things.
    BTW, I do have 2.5 loaded.  I guess I should have been more specific when requesting help.
    Once again...thanks for the advice.

  • Why is 100% not 100%?

    If I am drawing and have my window set to 100% how come when I save it as a gif and then open the file in a browser the drawing is smaller than it appeared when I was working on it in illustrator? These files are for web use so there are no screen to print considerations.
    Mark

    Larry,
    The problem is not 100% screen not equal to 100% print, but 100% raster image in Illustrator not equal to 100% raster image in browser on the same monitor.
    Mark,
    Is there some HTML formatting the GIF? Is that HTML also resizing it? If so, change the code to the same size as the image or export the image again using the size in the HTML.
    If not, can you post a link to the image?

    If you let me do a suggestion, it would be useful a place to add these pieces of code in a "Template Properties..." window, as it's possible in "Page Properties...", instead of "Insert HTML..." box in the template head.

  • Why the singleton pattern used rather than static things?

    class Single
        private Single() {}
        private void print() { System.out.println("Foo~"); }
        private static Single one = new Single();
        public static void print() { one.print(); }
    class Stat
        public static void print() { System.out.println("Foo~"); }
    }What's the different?? What is the benefit of the singleton one?

    There is no practical difference - because, in fact, that is not the singleton pattern!
    A singleton would look like:
    class Singleton {
        private Singleton() {}
        public void print() { System.out.println("Foo~"); }
        private static Singleton instance = new Singleton();
        public static Singleton getInstance() { return instance; }
    }The benefit of this pattern is, that your client code doesn't have to know that there is only one instance (getInstance could return another instance for every call) or of which actual type it is (getInstance could return an instance of any Subclass of Singleton).
    See http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?SingletonPattern for more information on the pattern.

    I am getting a message that tells me i am out of memory and it gives me an option to quit apps i have opened, most of times it's just Safari and i have no idea why is this happening suddenly, i have Mavericks 10.9.4 everything updated, and a 15 inches Macbook pro 2.3 GHz Quad-core 4 Gb-Ram.
    Sometimes it gets out of memory just surfing on Safari, checking mails, or chatting on Skype, what could be wrong?
    I had upgraded to the public beta of Yosemite but i couldn't stand it and formatted my computer again and downgraded to Mavericks, but i don't know why i feel it slower now compared with the last time i used it with the same Mavericks version. i hope this doesn't delete my question since i am not revealing anything about the beta.

    Get rid of "Memory Clean." It's worse than useless.
    There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
              A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
              Not enough memory for your usage pattern
    Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
    These instructions are for OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks.") The procedure may be slightly different for earlier versions of OS X.
    When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
              View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
    If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
    The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.
    Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, remove the software. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
    "Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
    If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
    The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
    sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
    where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the  leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.
