Why do I have to dial a "1" before making long-distance call

I have the FiOS bundle (phone, internet and tv).  In order to redial calls coming from caller ID I often have to add a 1 to the number.  So when I go to dial from my caller ID I have to write down or memorize the number and then add a "1" to the front of it, which I never had to do with Comcast.
Two questions:
1. Why do I have to dial a "1" before the phone numbers?
2. Does Verizon charge for long-distance?

The FCC categorizes Verizon as an 'ILEC' (Incumbent Local Exchange (telephone) Company; this means that they existed prior to the Bell System divestiture in 1984 and are required to observe certain operational standards to permit reasonable interconnectivity with their network(s) and any new 'CLEC' Competitive Local Exchange (telephone) Company.  Comcast is considered to be a 'CLEC' and as such only has to adhere to such standards to permit their connection to the public switched network.  Comcast is also a VOIP provider and thus creates many of its own rules as it sees fit --VOIP providers use many proprietary rules.  While this may seem advantageous to many people, it does create consumer confusion such as you have encountered with the 1+ access.
In reality, it is an old remnant from electromechanical switching systems (pre- electronic switches) and is not really needed in today's network.  In fact, many US localities have a 1+ 'permissive' dialing plan --meaning the call will go through with, or without, the 1+ (cellular does in fact work permissively).  The likelihood of the 1+ access changing in the near future is nil.
That all said, depending on the telephone set(s) you have it is possible to dial a 1+ call from a Caller ID list --some sets even have a menu option to cause all calls to have a 1+ prefixed.  Or, you could simply dial the 1+; then scroll to the desired Caller ID number and select it.  I do this all of the time.

I've been having similar issues although mine seem to happen when I import my own movies into Apple TV. After adding new items to my iTunes library and then switching my entertainment configuration to Apple TV, I get nothing but total blackness and my TV says it has no HDMI signal. Once I unplug and repower the Apple TV, everything works fine.

  • Why do you have to dial the area code if you are calling from the same area code

I am considering switching over to Verizon Digital Voice, I already have Verizon phone service as part of my quad package.  I understand that there are some more features, as well as a reduction of a certain tax resulting in apporx $8 savings per month.  The only drawback, as far as my wife is concerned, is that we would be required to dial the area code even if we are calling next door.  I am curious as to why that is.  I live on Long Island, New York.  Any insight would be helpful.  I have used the speed dial argument, but I am getting resitance.  Thanks in advance.  Marv

Just switched from Vonage and they had a home area code feature that allowed same area code calls, so that whenever you dialed a 7 digit phone # it went through as a local area call.  Don't understand why my new Verizon service can't do that; just makes me think I haven't figured it out yet.

    I have OSX 10.10.1 and CC 2014.
So I will open a PSD with an adjustment layer.
I turn off and on the "eyeball" in the layers panel. It counts as a change.
If you look at your document tab, you see a star at the end of the filename. It shows you made changes to  the file.
File > Save would remove that star and File > Save does dim on my Macbook.
If you are seeing it twice, the Preferences file may be corrupt. I suggest a reset.
Macintosh - CMD-SHIFT-OPTION immediately after you double-click the PS icon.
If that doesn't work uninstall/reinstall CC 2014 and updates'
Let me know how it went and mark the answer correct only if this solved your problem.

  • Why do I have to answer security questions before I download an app

Recently, I've had to fill out a security questionair every time I Download an app, why does this keep coming up? It used to be I could just use my apple ID, why did this change?

Apple has beefed up security on the App store, either in response to people reporting unauthroized use or in anticipation of unauthorized use. It's simply a step that's been taken to protect your Apple ID and the credit card/gift card balance attached to it.

  • Why do I mute or dial when talking on the phone? I used to not have any problems.

Why do I mute or dial when talking on the phone? Previously I did not have an issue. The phone seems very sensitive

The proximity sensor might have failed on your phone.   That's what forces the phone to dim the screen when you bring it up to your face.

  • I have a wireless home phone connect device. Can call out on it when dial tone present, but most times cannot receive calls since purchase. Anyone else having a  problem with their home connect device?

Have had Wireless Home Phone connect device refreshed and updated three times since I purchased it in September 2014. Last tech I worked with on it initialized an NRB to check the network. I checked the location of the tower, which is less than one mile up the hill with clear line of site. The device always has two antennas on it. The device is great when it does work, but most of the time it rings three times and then jumps to an automated message saying the person I am calling is not available. I've actually gone up there several times to try an fix the device, but always end up calling a Verizon tech who has me unplug it, pull the battery, and they do some network stuff and then we turn it back on and it works. After the last time on 10/02/14, I called it and got the message. I drove up there, 100 miles one way, and called it while standing in the room. Got the same message. I picked up the phone, heard a dial tone and dialed my phone and it range through. I hung that phone connected to the device and call it using my cell phone. It rang through. I went home and tried to call it the next day. Again it did not ring through and I got the message after three rings. I call another phone at the facility and had them call me on my mom's phone and it is fixed it again. The fix last for a day or two and then it's broken again, like it is today. If it's a network problem then it must be fairly close to the area because no matter what we do it fails again. So much for the 99.98% reliable. This thing is a piece of junk!
I purchased this device and put it on my plan so that my mother who we placed in a home at 96 years old would have a phone connection that she could use and wouldn't flip her out. My family and her family has not been able to faithfully connect with her at this critical time in her life. I am giving Verizon 10 more days to figure this out and then I am going to ask for a total refund not to mention how much time and travel I have put into this piece of junk. Either the home connect transceiver is broken or the network is broken. Why should I pay close to $70 for a service that has not worked more than several days out of 35 days? Also I have spent close to three hours on the phone with decent technical people, but it's my time. I should send Verizon a bill for every time I have gone up there to fix this device as well.
What perplexes me is that a regular cell phone would have sufficed, but because Verizon has to have a data connection that is not available on a regular phone and it was going to cost me $30/month, I decided to go with the home connect. Seemed like a nice solution for an older person who would have a hard time using a cell phone and keeping it charged. Plus after all the fees for getting it connected, it only cost $20/month. That would be a pretty good thing, IF IT WORKED....... The other thing that irks me is, why do I have to pay for a data connection when the cell phone Verizon originally provided can't even access the network. What ever happened to adding a phone line for $10 bucks\ month? All I wanted was a simple phone. She would not be able to use anything more complex and all she needs is a phone line period.
I have no problem paying for something that works and does what it should, but this is ridiculousness. The MTF on this device is somewhere around 1 to 2 days. Out of 365 days that's about a 96.5% failure rate....... Want my advice? Get ride of this device. It sucks and it's bad marketing.

        jsavage9621,
It pains me to hear about your experience with the Home Phone Connect.  This device usually works seamlessly and is a great alternative to a landline phone.  It sounds like we've done our fair share of work on your account here.  I'm going to go ahead and send you a Private Message so that we can access your account and review any open tickets for you.  I look forward to speaking with you.

  • Is it possible to have a dial which allows high precision fixed values?

OK, I need to have two dials.  Both have only specific values allowed.
On allows values in a certain range, with increments of 0.25.  That is, I want to allow 7.25 and 7.5, but not, for example, 7.3.
I did this successfully by choosing an increment of 0.25 in the Data Entry tab of the properties, and setting it to coerce.
My second dial needs values in a certain range (0 to 359.912109,  if you must know ), with an increment of
0.087890625  (exactly).  When I enter this, it gets rounded off to 0.0879, which will not give me the values that I want.
    What can I do?
    Thank you.

    3.  Why do you suggest a range of 0..1 and multiply by 360, rather than a range of 0..360 in the first place?
Interesting. I wasn't aware if this limitation. I guess it only works for simple controls. (Here's an idea!)
You cannot set the range and delta, they are the results of the "word lenght" and "integer word lenght". These are tightly limited by the underlying binary representation.
In this particular case, you could chose a word lenght of 12 bits and integer word lenght of zero bits, giving you an increment of exactly 1/4096 (The display is unfortunately rounded to four decimal digits and does not show the full resolution) (Here's another idea!)

  • Why do I have extra songs in my iPhone playlist that are not on my iTunes library?

After doing the iOS7 update (and iOS7.0.2) I decided to add my music to my phone (I never had music on it before).
I discovered that there were 20 very random and obscure broadway songs that were on my iPhone in addition to the 60 songs I just synced. They had the iCloud icon by them, unlike the songs I had just added.
After doing research I found that the broadway songs were technically "purchased" on iTunes although they are not songs I would have ever purchased- in fact I have never once purchased anything on iTunes.  This isn't my worry though, I am assuming it must have been some random free download I did at some point?
I went to settings > music > and turned show all music off.  This did NOT work for all of them and only solved the problem 80%.  There are still 4 of the random song on my iPhone. They DO NOT show up in my iTunes library on my computer and don't even exist on my computer.
With the other songs I can left swip and delete but these 4 songs won't!  Why won't these four songs left swipe?
I am going crazy and have tried restarting my phone, restarting iTunes, re-syncing, turning off the iCloud.  NOTHING WORKS.
Please help.  I am a normally a very smart and tech-savvy person and I cannot for the life of me figure this out.  I don't want to wipe everything- which as a solution is a pretty weak solution.
Why won't certain songs left swipe to delete off my phone when I am in the music app?
Why do I have extra songs on my phone that don't appear on iTunes on my computer?
Where did these songs come from and how do I get rid of them?
    Much thanks!

I had the exact same issue!! Seriously p*ssed me off when I checked out my ITunes purchased items (via my computer) and noticed that most of the additional tracks listed on my IPhone playlist was listed there too. However, I never authorized any purchases!!  (I have actually written Apple Support asking for a full refund of all tracks listed on my purchased list)
Be careful when you swipe your finger to the left/right on those "additional" tracks on your IPhone playlist... I'm pretty sure that the cloud symbol is an option to download or automatically buy those tracks.
    Solution for the problem:
1 - go to your IPhone settings
    2 - choose "iTunes & App Store"
3 - go to "Show All" & "Music"
4 - turn off "Music" by moving the bar to the left (it should be a white color once you turn it off)
    Should solve your problem :~)

  • Why do I have "Unified Info" and plain "Info" categories in my iPhone Contacts?

I have an iPhone 3GS (iOS 5.0.1), an iMac (OS X v10.7.3) and an iCloud account.  All are set to sync several things, but the topic of this inquiry is my Contacts.  I've noticed that when I open any given Contact listing on my iPhone, each is headed by one of two lines: "Unified Info" or plain "Info."  At the bottom of a "Unified Info" contact listing are two lines showing me "Linked Cards," one being for iCloud and the other for iPhone.  On the one headed plain "Info" there are no Linked Cards showing at the bottom of the contact listing.  As noted above, my system is  set so that the Contacts in my iPhone, my iCloud account and my iMac (which is further set to keep both my and my wife's contacts sync'd, as well) all read the same.  So why do I have these two "types" of entries on my iPhone?  I should note that all the important information in all three places (iPhone, iMac and iCloud) - name, numbers, addresses, etc. - IS THE SAME, but why do they have diffefent headings on my iPhone!?!  Any explanation from someone knowledgeable about this would be appreciated, and is there any way I can get - or should want to get - all the Contact entries on my iPhone to be "Unified Info" entries?  Thanks, in advance, for any help you can offer.

I've got the same problem. Showed up after trying they 'sync google contacts' feature in Address Book/iTunes. Suddenly I have duplicates of all my Contacts. Address Book doesn't see any duplicates using the 'Find Duplicates...' feature. In Address Book I can only tell the difference between the duplicates by comparing the information in them. The new ones (presumably from Google) are missing fields like URL and birthday. On the iPhone, however, the names have these squares after them. These squares don't show up in Address Book (if they did it would make it much easier to delete them all).

  • Why do i have to have my cellular data turned on to recieve or send TEXT messages?

my girlfriend and i have noticed this most recently.
To send or recieve TEXT messages (not MMS) on our iPhone 5's we have to have our *cellular data* turned on. OMG why? It's supposed to not use cellular data for texting (or callling) so why do we have to have it switched on for TEXT messages (SMS)? Does that mean that texting is now going to eat our data plans?  If so, we'd of been better off with our old cell phones.

no- i think you've hit the nail on the head. (perhaps inadvertantly)
because my g/f and i couldnt get each other's txts, over 3/4 of the time, if the cellular data wasnt turned on.
    green bubble = sms.
    blue bubble=imessage (data or wifi)
all this was with (blue bubble) imessage stuff  (with the thought that it'd use wifi, but the wifi at work *****, so ofcourse it'll use data.
Hmmn. I'm going to shut off iMessage and see if that takes care of the issue.

  • How can I keep every single photo from saving to "collections""my photo stream""camera role" and just use one folder? And why do I have to delete the same pictures 4 times? In "collections""myphotostream"camera role""deleted photos" I need ONE FOLDER

im sick of deleting the same picture 4 separate times, I want to limit everything to one folder and only have to delete one time, how? Why does this have to be so complicated

Photos you take on your camera are in the Camera Roll and are like the film in a camera.
Photo Stream is an independent stream of photos from all devices that are logged onto the same iCloud account and that have Photo Stream turned on. Photo Stream photos are kept in the cloud for 30 days or up to 1000 photos, whichever comes first, so unless you have a particular photo you just don't want to stay out there for 30 days, you don't really need to delete Photo Stream Photos. They are temporary. Your device will continue to keep your Photo Stream photos from prior to the 30 day limit, but if you switch Photo Stream off in iCloud and then right back on, the only photos that will re-display in Photo Stream on that device are the ones that remain within the 30 Day/1000 photo parameter.
Collections is simply a single place which shows all of the photos that you have on your device. You do not need to delete photos from Collections. It is just a single place where you can see the contents of all of your albums.
Photos in albums that you have created on the device itself are tied to the photos in your Camera Roll, so if you delete them from the Camera Roll, it will tell you that it will also be deleted from an album.
Albums that you have sync'd from your computer should be removed the same way you got them there - by hooking the device up to a the computer you did the sync with, and un-selecting the album from the Photo profile screen.
So, really, there are only two places that you need to delete photos - Camera Roll and Photo Stream.
    Cheers,
