Why should client PCs always know the default gateway?

Considering that my home computer has only one connection and it is to my ISP,
why does it need the default gateway to be configured (being DHCP client)?
Where else my connection can be deviated from this unique connection cable?
Is it possible to configure a router to which my PC is connected and, then,
the client PCs would not need to be configured with default gateway?
Or client PCs always have to know default gateway?
Why?

How IP Packets are Routed on a Local Area Network
http://www.anitkb.com/2010/06/how-ip-packets-are-routed-on-local-area.html
Thanks, this helps but still confuses.
The article tells:
" Now that WK1 has WK2's MAC, it can send the packet directly to WK2"
A)
I do not understand what does it mean if computer has one outgoing network cable to switch.
It is switch who has different connections and, thereafter, can commutate different communication circuits.
So, I can only understand that WK1 somehow tells to switch to connect him directly to WK2 but not to router.
How?
B)
Were  WK1 and WK2 connected directly to a hub, instead of switcher, would they be able to communicate directly?
(The definition of a hub is that it takes a signal and broadcast it through all connections)
C)
Also, reading about switch-router-hub, I cannot understand which role is played by a client computer in communication
(of a hub, of a switcher?)?  Neither of them? What?
A. I believe a fundamental understanding of what a switch and the differences and the similarities between a hubs, bridges and switches, as well as the OSI model, may be helpful at this time.
First, the OSI model is an industry standard defining how hosts communicate with each other. There are 7 layers. THe bottom layer has no intelligence and is the physical connection. As you go up the ladder, the intelligence increases.
7 Application (Application Gateways, Proxies, etc, operate at this level)
6 Presentation
5 Session
4 Transport (TCP, UDP, SPX live here and operate at this layer, NAT overlaps 3 & 4)
3 Network (IP & IPX live here. NetBEUI and DLC overlap 3 & 4. Routers operate at this layer)
2 Datalink (MAC addresses live here. Bridges and Switches operate at this level)
1 Physical (Hubs operate at this level)
Hubs, Bridges and switches allow ethernet hosts to communicate with each other, no matter what protocol is being used, whether TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, NetBEUI, DLC, etc.  They transmit packets on the network.
A hub is a Layer 1 device. It is a dumb device blatantly allowing all hosts to communicate to each other with no discerning source or destination addresses, whether MAC, IP, IPX or any other factor, in the packets.
A bridge is a Layer 2 device. It bascially has two interfaces connecting two network segments together. If a host on one side of the bridge, we'll call that SegmentA, is trying to communicate to another host on the same SegmentA, the
bridge will not allow the traffic to go to the other segment on its other interface, SegmentB. This helps reduce unnecessary traffic and reducing collisions, which slow down the network. If the host on SegmentA is communicating with a host on SegmentB, the
bridge allows the traffic. This is because a bridge has enough intelligence to read the Link layer, which has the MAC address (the physical address) of the interface or network card. It can read the source and destination MAC and determines whether to allow
that traffic across or not depending on where the source MAC is and where the destination MAC is.
Switches are basically multi-port bridges. When a switch intializes, it reads the MAC addresses of all connected devices and creates a "destination table." Notice I didn't say "routing table" since that is associated with IP addresses.
Therefore, if a host on port# 14 on a switch needs to communicate with a host on # 33 on the switch, the switch reads the source and destination MAC address in the Datalink Layer (Layer 2) and knows the destination is on port# 33 based on the destination
lookup table it created of all connected devices. It will then only send this traffic between the two ports. This essentially reduces unnecessary traffic on other ports increasing efficiency.
There are also Layer 3 Switches. They are combination switches and routers that can be managed where you can configure each port to either be switched or routed.
So to answer your questions:
A)
I do not understand what does it mean if computer has one outgoing network cable to switch.
It is switch who has different connections and, thereafter, can commutate different communication circuits.
So, I can only understand that WK1 somehow tells to switch to connect him
directly to WK2 but not to router.
How?
As explained, the switch simply discerns traffic by MAC address. The client side TCP/IP subsystem using the ANDING process, as I've explained earlier, and JM's blog explains, determines where the computer is sending the packets. A computer does not "Tell"
the switch or hub anything. It simply dumps the packet on the wire and the switch reacts to what it finds in the Datalink layer, and if a hub, it simply sends the traffic on all ports.
B)
Were  WK1 and WK2 connected directly to a hub, instead of switcher, would they be able to communicate directly?
(The definition of a hub is that it takes a signal and broadcast it through all connections)
It's not called a 'switcher.' It's called a 'switch.' As explained, a hub blatantly broadcasts traffic on all ports. It is up to the sending host and receiving host to read all packets and figure out what belongs to it or not. If a destination address doesn't
apply to a computer that hears the data, it simply ignores it.
C)
Also, reading about switch-router-hub, I cannot understand which role is played by a client computer in communication
(of a hub, of a switcher?)?  Neither of them? What?
The computer is simply plugged into these devices. The devices have their job to do, and the computer has its own.
I hope that explains this part of your networking questioning.

  • Does anyone know the default size for 24 in. imac display?

I inadverently changed the display size on my 24 inch imac. The font in the toolbar at the top of the desktop is larger than I want. Also, when I open windows in different applications, they open larger than the display and have to be downsized in order to see the entire window.
Does anyone know the default size for this display? Or is there a different way to fix my issues?
    thanks in advance.

Hi Napamike2: The default setting for the 24" is 1920X1200. If that doesn't get you back to the proper display, maybe you have accidentally activated "Zoom". To check go to System Preferences, Universal Access. Check that Zoom is turned off.

    Hi Bill,
Thank you for replying back...Yes, I was actually asking how do you set the default gateway address on the DHCP server?,
I believe I got the answer below:
To configure the DHCP default gateway option Click Start, point to Administrative Tools and then click DHCP. In the console tree, expand the applicable DHCP server, expand IPv4, and then right-click Scope Options Click Configure Options, check 003
Router, type the applicable Server name and IP address, and then click OK.
    Thank you

  • It should be easier to change the default copyright company in Application Builder

It should be easier to change the default copyright company in Application Builder.
I got the following from NI support to change the name of the company that is copyrighting the software.
    1. To show the desired hidden folder, you must select Tools>> Folder Options >> View >> Under 'Files and Folders'>> 'Hidden files and folders' >> check the 'Show hidden files, folders, or drives' >> Select 'ok'
    2. Navigate to C:\ProgramData
    3. Open ProgramData >> National Instruments >> LVProductDLLInfo >> 12.0.0 >>LabVIEW_ADE_120000.ini   ***Please note that the folder 12.0.0 may instead be 14.1.0 or another numeric value based on which version of LabVIEW you are using***
    4. Change the RegisteredOrganization and RegisteredOwner to the appropriate organization and owner respectively.
The fix NI support sent me was to change the name of the current software owner.
The company that owns the software is usually writing the program for another company that is paying to have it developed. If the software owner is not careful they may assign the copyright to their company or to the company that they developed software for last.   I am sure that the company that had software developed will be surprised if their name is not listed as the legal copyright owner.

I've found it now (sheepishly). It is a parameter defined in Home->Application Builder->Application 693->Application Attributes->Edit Definition. I thought it was using the database nls parameters, but it isnt. So I simply had to change the parameter value from $ to £.

  • Always displays the default saved search in af:query

    hi,
The saved search drop down lists the saved searches but could not select another saved search. The dropdown selected value always point to the default saved search, as well as it's UI in criteria region. The same behavior in saving a new search, it will always refresh to the default. What seems to be the problem here? The current QueryDescriptor point to the new search but the UI always displays the default.
    Thanks in advance.

Found the solution. The queryDescriptor getter calls again the default value that's way it doesn't change. Thanks for the time.

  • Why should we create index on  the table after inserting data ?

Please tell me the Reason, why should we create index on the table after inserting data .
while we can also create index on the table before insertion of the data.

The choice depends on a number of factors, the main being how many rows are going to be inserted in the table as a percentage of the existing rows, or the percentage growth.
Creating index after a table has been populated works better when the tables are large or the inserts are large for the following reasons
    1. The sort and creation of index is more efficient when done in batch and written in bulk. So works faster.
    2. When the index is being written blocks get acquired as more data gets written. So, when a large number of rows get inserted in a table that already has an index , the index data blocks start splitting / chaining. This increases the "depth" of the inverted b-tree makes and that makes the index less efficient on I/O. Creating index after data has been inserted allows Orale to create optical block distribution/ reduce splitting / chaining
    3. If an index exists then it too is routed through the undo / redo processes. Thats an overhead which is avoided when you create index after populating the table.

  • How get the RVS4000's DHCP server to assign another IP address other than its own as the default gateway to its DHCP clients?

    Hi,
I have a RVS4000 router with DHCP enabled and in router mode.
The LAN is 192.168.2.x.  The RVS4000 static IP address is 192.168.2.8
The router is not the RVS4000 and is at 192.168.2.1
The RVS4000 dhcp is assigning it's clients a default gateway of 192.168.2.8 instead of what I want 192.168.2.1.
How can I get the RVS4000's DHCP server to assign another IP address other than its own as the default gateway to its DHCP clients?
    Thanks

Hi Gail, you cannot do this. The router, as the DHCP server will only assign a default gateway of what IP interface the DHCP server runs on. If you have the default IP, the gateway is 192.168.1.1. If you create a second vlan, by default it would be 192.168.2.1.
There are not configuration options for the built-in DHCP server. If you'd like to expand this functionality, you would need an external dhcp server.

  • Why am I unable to delete the default track (which seems to act as the master, right?) after making a rough mix?  Is it possible to delete the default track after having rendered a mix?

Why am I unable to delete the default track (which seems to act as the master, right?) after making a rough mix?  Is it possible to delete the default track after having rendered a mix?  I did a rough mix and now cannot change the song as the tracks that were a part of the rough mix seem to remain in the song even though I mute the tracks for a new mix.  For instance, I played and recorded a different bass line.  Muted the original, but when trying to create the new mix I can hear the original bass line even though I have muted that track.  It seems to remain in the previous master (default) track.  Please send help.  Thank you.

Before answering your question, you have to make sure you understand the difference between the different track types in GarageBand.
Tracks, you record your music on
There are three types of those Tracks.
MIDI Tracks (aka Software Instrument Tracks)
Audio Tracks (aka Real Instrument Tracks)
Drummer Track (only one per Project)
    Global Tracks
These are the Tracks that can be shown/hidden at the top of the Tracks Area for specific purposes.
    Arrangement Track
    Movie Track
    Transposition Track
    Tempo Track
    Master Track
This Track can also be shown/hidden in the Tracks Area. Please note, you cannot delete that Track, only hide it, similar to the Global Tracks
Regarding the Tracks you record your music on,  you can delete any of those. It doesn't matter if you created them or there are part of a Template (maybe that  is what you refer to as the default track). Once you delete the last Track, the "New Track Window" will pop up to add a new track.
I will explain all that in much more detail in my manual "GarageBand X - How it Works".
    Hope that helps

  • WRT350N : how to specify the default gateway?

    Hello,
I would like to use my wrt350n as a dhcp server, but want to specify another router as the default gateway.
I have my wrt350n (192.168.1.254) and another modem/router (192.168.1.1). When a client connects to the wrt350n, it automatically receives as default gateway the adress of the wrt350 (192.3168.1.1). I would like to change that to reference the other adress 192.168.1.1.
    Thanks for your comments

    Hello,
    Thanks for your answer.
I try to give you more information.
The modem router (bbox2 : 192.168.1.1) is connected to an ethernet port on the WRT350 (192.168.1.254). I would like to desactivate the DHCP server on the bbox2 (because limited to 802.11g), and activate it on the wrt350, to have a wireless network in 802.11n. The problem when I do that, is at the dhcp server, the default gateway returns is always the ip adress of the wrt350 (so no internet access). Nevertheless, I have to specify the ip of the bbox (192.168.1.1) for the internet traffic. I don't find a way to change the value of the default gateway returns by the wrt350. I can set different values for DNS, but not for the gateway.
Actually, I turn on the dhcp server on the bbox and turnoff it on the wrt350, but my wireless spped is limited to 54Mbits (802.11g), and this not annoying for surfing purpose, but annoying when streaming video from my san connected to the wrt350n.
    I don't know if it's clear now?
    Thanks for your feedback

  • The Default Gateway Is Not Available / Problem

Hello, I recently purchased this HP Pavileon laptop, and I've been encountering this problem very often (every 2-10 minutes).  This problem is getting extremely frustrating as absolutely nobody has been able to provide a fix for this issue.
When the laptop is on battery mode (this does not happen when plugged in); I commonly get disconnected from my wi-fi connection and to fix it, I must run the troubleshooter. This temporarily fixes the issue by resetting the wi-fi adapter.
What I have tried and has not worked:
    * Turn off to save power option in the driver settings (in Device Manager) untickets
    * Updated drivers
    * New power plan
    * Tried different drivers
    * Complete system restore
The wireless adapter is Realtek RTL 8188EE.  Upon running the troubleshooter, this is all the information from the detailed information section:

My roomates computer has a linksys internet card, and I have a apple airport router. His computer says that it is connected but the internet doesnt work. When I called the Linksys people they said that I need the default gateway number to type in the computer. Can you please help me with this.

  • Meetingplace server crash and lost the default gateway info

    HI all
I have ver 2.0.1.15. I have first eth0 on ip 10.1.1.18 and 2nd eth1 192.168.162.21. will crash and the default gateway on eth0 will be gone. Am i doing something wrong.

    Shannon,
Harry is asking you the right question, because a theme with any bad syntax in it (especially custom XSLT files) will get scrapped when the server restarts.
Try to think of something you changed recently, revert it to see of the theme will show up, and try to find the syntax error in your recent changes.
This caught me by surprise when it first happened, but I suppose it is a nice feature. The Wiki Server falls back on a theme that works, which are the built-in ones. It would be nice if the errors were logged instead of just scrapping the theme, but I assume the spirit is to give you a wiki that works, rather than a nicely themed wiki that has errors.

  • Windows Client MP is using the default action account to write to the Data Warehouse

    Hi,
I have recently installed SCOM 2012R2, and am in the process of migrating everthing from SCOM 2007R2.
Just after I installed the Windows Client MP (version 6.0.7250.0), I started getting this Event 11852:
OleDb Module encountered a failure 0x80004005 during execution and will post it as output data item. Unspecified error

    Management group: 2012SCOMDEV
This is happening every 7 days and only happening on the Win7 Management pack. I checked the DW logs and found that it was using the default action acount (SCOM ACTION)to send to the DW.  This account doesn't have access to the DW DB.
I assume it should be using the Data Warehouse action account.  This is how the acount is setup
Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong here?  I have not had to touch the permissions for any of the other Management packs.  the rest of them just work.
