Working with List, Collection or Map

Hello everyone,
I have the following situation: I must add some values to a List, Collection or Map, and then retrieve them do put them in a combo box. My doubt is: which of them I should use?
I wanna add a string working as an index and another working as a description. Like this:
- "First string", "Hey here's my first string"
- "String 2", "number 2 now"
So, when I add it to the combo (which is actually a html:select), I wanna show the description and get the value.
Which of them should I use?

UI not getting change update when working with LIST and INotifyPropertyChanged

i was trying to know two way data binding. i have simple car class which extend INotifyPropertyChanged for notify the change to update UI. bind List object to few textboxes and notice when one textbox value change then other textbox value not updated. all
textboxes bind to same property. so one's value change should propagate to other textboxes.

1) what is the difference between List and BindingList class ?
2) can't we use List<> for my situation instead of BindingList

I would have thought that'd work with List<t>, in fact I think there must be something wrong in your code there. I can't spot it though.
I recommend use of ObservableCollection rather than BindingList.
The default on bindings is that changes are propagated from the target ( view ) to source ( vm ) when the control loses focus.
If you want to do the equivalent to a keydown event handler in a viewmodel then onpropertychanged is the way to go.
You want to avoid creating bindings in code unless you really really have to, it's way easier to put them in xaml.
Even if your ui is dynamic, you can build xaml and use that to create the ui objects:

What probably isn't very obvious is that BindingList fires an event - iirc itemchanged when properties on objects in it change.
Maybe you did something wrong in your implementation of inotifypropertychanged. I must admit, I can't see anything there though.
You don't really need those magic strings since .net4.5 and you also don't need to explicitly implement inotifypropertychanged you could use:

If you try that sample you can have:

And you can see it still notifies change successfully to both windows.
Most wpf devs will use observablecollection rather than List or bindinglist.
Observablecollection notifies addition or removal of entries. It can be used to notify an entry has changed, but does not detect change of property. You would have to raise the event in code if you want to tell it an item changed.

LrPhoto:getContainedPublishedCollections() to work with Smart Collection

I have customized the original flickr publish plugin to suit my liking and to model the behavior of Flickr especially the Photostream and Photosets concept. I love the improve plugin i created very much. When I started to work with smart collections to publish my photos to flickr.most of the functionality and behavior of flickr I had created breakdown as I rely heavily on LrPhoto:getContainedPublishedCollections() to interconnect each photoset (collection). Apparently this function doesn't work with smart collection. My question would be
1. For the next update of lightroom, I hope to see the function LrPhoto:getContainedPublishedCollections() to also work with Smart Collections.
2. For the time being is there any alternative way to reference smart collections from a LrPhoto?

How do you setup/configure a bluetooth GPS to work with windows 8 internal map programs. So far i,ve been able to connect the GPS device to the tablet, but it only works with Microsoft legacy map programs using the COM ports ie 3,7.

Tooltips don't work with list items?

Hi
I have a list item (I've tried with both combo and poplist), I've set the tooltip and the tooltip doesn't get displayed. I tried setting the tooltip on a normal text item control for comparison and that displays the tooltip. Do tooltips not work on list items?

Could be a problem about what JRE you are working? Jinitiator or Sun JRE.

Works as List, not as Map

I'm having an issue with 1-M mappings where the type of the child attribute is a java.util.Map. When I read the parent and reference the child, Toplink is only populating one object in the Map, even though there multiple in the database.
When I change the data type on the collection attribute to a List, all children are correctly read - i.e., it works fine.
In the collections tab in the workbench, I set the collection type to IndirectMap when using a Map (and set the key method appropriately), and Indirect List when using a List.
In debug (JDeveloper) when processing as a Map, I do see the key method accessed, and actually see data from all children in the debugger data view as it cycles through them. However, only the last object (which it seems to cycle through twice in the key method) ends up in the map. Unfortuntely, the debugger doesn't let me see what's happening with the population of the collection.
This happens whether I use indirection (transparent or value holder) or not.
Any idea on what I'm missing? Code snippets below (parent is Firm, child is FirmOfficer - there are 3 on the database; intent is to read/update all children):

Check that the value you are using for the Map key is unique. i.e. each object in the collection must have a unique key value otherwise with a Map you will only end up with a single element if they all share the same Map key.

Search no longer working with image collection software

I use both Skyscraper (unfortunately recently discontinued by Fortunate Bear) and HyperImage from Kavasoft to collect images off the Internet. Both have worked fine prior to Mavericks, but I now find that neither will collect images via a standard search using Google as the engine. I've also tried Yahoo! as the engine with the same negative results.
I short, I have always been able to enter a parameter in either program, say "George Washington", and have the software start to collect images based on that paramater. Neither will do that now, which leads me to believe that Mavericks is somehow interfering with this functionality. If I look at the activity logs of either program, there is no activity whatsoever.
Does anyone have any insight on this or use either of these two programs? I've tried to contact Fortunate Bear but they don't even have the program listed on their website any longer. (It's a bit strange since they just bought it last year!) I haven't yet heard back from HyperImage.

Try running a repair disk permissions. This is done via the Disk Utility application. Reply if you need help to do this.
Also, do you have another application you can scan with? Note that Preview will use Image Capture, so you need some other application. As a test, you could download Picasa from Google which works well with TWAIN scanners.

How can I sync Bridge between multiple computers at work with keywords/collections/search?

We've been trying to find a digital asset management platform at work for a while now and I recently came across Bridge (we have the Creative Cloud). It's perfect! Except we're all on a bunch of different computers and would need to be able to search the same keywords/collections all from the same server (the photos are in many different folders though). Is there a way to be able to sync all keywords etc on multiple computers? Or if someone opens Bridge and can search right away without having to make all the keywords persistent by finding each photo and clicking on it? We're all on the same Creative Cloud team.

I actually did already create a book with all the files in it, but I couldn't figure out how that was helpful. The hyperlink panel doesn't seem to have any "book" options (unless I'm looking in the wrong place?) and just linking to the different files (after creating the book) didn't have any different results than linking to the files before I created the book.
I thought maybe linking to the different files in the book would work if I could export the whole book to pdf at once (which would be super-helpful in and of itself), but that doesn't seem to be an option either.
I guess what I'm asking is for you to elaborate on what to do after creating the book.

Any way to work with multiple layers once map is mapped to a sphere?

I'm working on a history documentary about World War II and I have a map of the world divided into colonial empires. Each empire is a separate layer. I know how to take the world map and apply it to a sphere in Photoshop CS4 Extended.
The problem is that after this all my layers disappear and I'm left with a single layer.
I want to fade in the empires' opacity levels as the globe revolves.
How can I do this if putting the map on the sphere collapses all the layers into one?
Also, how do you turn off the shadow on the sphere? I want it the same level of brightness everywhere on the planet.

Hi Nick,
I think you have figured out that if you want a texture map to contain layers, you need to either group the layers (and select the group), or just select all of them before selecting the 'New Shape From Layer>' command. The result difusse map will have a single name, but if you open it you will see that it has layers intact.
Fading opacity or any other keyframe attribute of a texture while the 3d model is also being animated, is a new feature to CS4. You need to open the texture and animate it so you have an animated texture applied to an animated object. I have added a quick lo-fi 4 sec. sample of what I think you're trying to accomplish. I'll attach the source PSD, so you can take a look at how I set it up.
Basically, I took your flat png file an added some layers for the country selections so I could fade them in/out. Then I animated them to fade using the layer opacity (100% keyframe at start, 0% keyframe at finish, or vied versa). I then selected all the layers and 3D> New Shape from Layer> Sphere. Now I went about animating the revolving of the sphere using 3D object position for keyframing (I went from z: -180, to 0, to +180, but you can play around with that. I'm not expert with the animation to know what works best for smooth transitions and looping if desired). The animation from the texture should 'play' at the same time as the animation of the sphere, you just need to sync the timelines when setting keyframes.
For even lighting on the sphere, you can approach it a few ways. Your best bet in this case is to go to 3D> Render Settings... and select 'Unlit' Texture' from the Face Style pop up menu. You can also remove all the lights using the 3D panel (select a light in the top half and then click the trash can icon at the bottom), and then change the Global Ambient color to White (found in 3D panel with 'Scene' selected). You could also try adding infinite lights at all the six camera views.

DropDownMenu Plug in not working with list query

I installed Tab-Menu COM.JWILSON.APEX.DROP_MENU.
I created a region for that plug in using the following query

When i checked the url it is showing http://apex.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=&APP_ID.:8:&SESSION.::&DEBUG.::::
I think the plug in is not substituting the APP_ID, SESSION and DEBUG session items.

Working with NIK Collection reduces file size

HDR Efex produces out of three RAW-files with each 24 MB one JPG-file with 27 MB. Sharpening this with HDR Sharpener reduces the size to 19 MB. The following noise reduction leaves me with 9 MB. Why is this and what does this mean?

Working with collections

I am having an issue with working with lists of objects and would greatly appreciate some help on this. would like to cast indirectlist to arraylist.
I have a collection of data declared as below.
private Collection<PersistableTableData> tableData = (Collection<PersistableTableData>) new ArrayList();
then I try to access the data like below.
ArrayList<PersistableTableData> td = (ArrayList<PersistableTableData>) tableData;
but I get an error...
java.lang.ClassCastException: oracle.toplink.essentials.indirection.IndirectList cannot be cast to java.util.ArrayList
The question is am I doing something stupid here? I know I can create an arraylist like..
ArrayList<PersistableTableData> td = new ArrayList<PersistableTableData>(getTableData());
but it seems like that is allot of overhead when the list was created as an arraylist to begin with.
Is there a better way todo this?

What is the reason for trying to get the collection values outside of the session? Maybe
there is no need for that. If you want to query the table, you need to grant access to that
table to your workspace user and I wouldn't recommend that practice. Also, since your
application has many sessions, the data you get will be multiplicated by that factor.

Procedure failed while using bulk collect into clause and works with cursor

Why are you not using an INSERT..SELECT ?
Also, what are you trying to achieve by
- incremental commits?
- copying data from one table to another (using expensive I/O)?
- using dynamic DML?
Most of these approaches are typically wrong - and not recommended for scalable and performant Oracle applications.I could see you using a CURSOR FOR LOOP if you were changing the data being inserted in such a way that you couldn't encapsulate the changes in a query, but you are doing a straight insert into the table from your Cursor. A much more efficient way would be to use the following modifications I made to your code example:

GPS does not appear to work with data-roaming off and no wi-fi network

I have been using an application called imarkmyspot to produce way-points for synchronising with my camera. When I am in my home country this works fine and a GPS location is found quickly.
I've recently been abroad and had data-roaming turned off to avoid high expense. The point is that in this situation the GPS does not work (with imarkmyspot or Goggle Maps) unless I can access an open wi-fi network.
So my question is, is this correct? Does GPS only work with either data access on or when within range of an open wi-fi network.
If this is feature (bug) of the iPhone then this makes applications such as imarkmyspot rather useless when travelling. Alternatively it could be imarkmyspot that has this problem of course. But I'm quite sure Google Maps did not work either in this situation either.

The iPhone's GPS does work without a data connection.
Two weeks ago on a work-related trip I knew I'd be traveling a rural highway that would leave me without data/voice from any source for at least 45 minutes (no GSM service). Before leaving a city with data, I zoomed out using Google Maps far enough to show most of my route, then "nudged" the map so the application wouldn't try to get a data update for the map. I simply used the top power button to turn on and off the screen. The iPhone and GMaps tracked me through for the entire blacked-out section of my trip - I made sure the device had a decent view of the sky and it got a fix and nailed the location within a few seconds.
Ironically, I'm returning that device in the next few hours for an exchange. The GPS hardware, it seems, has failed about a week ago - the device gets A-GPS fixes now (it shows the nearby 3G and EDGE towers), but won't lock in for more than a second or two. My iPhone's GPS worked, and now it doesn't - AppleCare told me my GPS hardware has failed - and you're may be exhibiting the same failure.
Some A-GPS devices use their sources to get close by - like my TomTom GO and the ephemeris files it grabs from their servers to get updates on where satellite locations are - and then use the on-board chip to nail the device's position. From what I understand of the iPhone's assistance mechanism, the data tower's and Wi-Fi physical location needs to be correct and available in an accessible database somewhere - my iPhone was showing me near Houston TX (2200 mi/3500 km distant from my actual location) when using 3G data until the data source was updated.
