Wrong hostname from DHCP

Hi,
I've been  following a strange issue between Macs and Windows Server based DHCP for some time.
Mac's got their IP address via DHCP, just like Windows machines.
The compter name is set up in Sharing in System Preferences. Everything seems to be normal.
Now the fun starts:
When I open a Terminal window I see a completely different name on the command prompt. This probably causes Apple Remote Desktop not to see some clients when they are on, because they have wrong hostname. ARD complains the Mac are offline when I can walk to the Mac and plainly see it's switched on and connected to the network.
So, my theory is, the IP Mac get's was previously assigned to an laptop computer, which goes off the network and the DHCP-supplied IP address is released and next get's assigned to a Mac. Somehow the hostname used by the previous IP lease holder sticks to the IP address and get's slapped to the Mac. Strangely this hostname overrides the name assigned on System Preferences.
Has anyone else observed similar behavior?

Here's some of my journal:

I'm using netcfg.service. dhcpcd@ is disabled. I don't have ifplugd installed. There's no net-auto-wired service enabled.
I'm not sure what is calling dhcpcd in this log.
Maybe this should be in a different subforum...

  • PVC2300 wrong hostname

    Hi,
we own two PVC2300. They have new hostnames in their configuration, but both registered in DNS with a wrong Hostname (CAM<mac-address>). I did a firmware update, but no chance. Has anyone a solution for me?
    Thanks.

    Sorry I may have misunderstood.
Are you registering these with a dynamic DNS service in the cloud?
If so, the IP address you subscribed with would have to match the registered name you submitted..
Or are you doing local DNS on the LAN, in which case the static NAT IP of the Cameras would match you local DNS table (like an /etc/hosts on Unix).
The key is a static IP mapped to a name so the IP doesnt change with subsequent DHCP assignment and make your names assoications wrong...maybe?

  • Incorrect setting hostname over DHCP with systemd

I'm using `netcfg' with `ethernet-dhcp'. My `/etc/dhcpcd.conf' contains the line
    option domain_name_servers, domain_name, domain_search, host_name
Unfortunately in most cases (randomly?) my host introduces itself as `localhost'. If I run:
    # dhcpcd -k eth0
    # dhcpcd eth0
    it gets quite confusing:
    $ hostname
    correct.one.obtained.from.dhcp
    $ hostnamectl
    Static hostname: n/a
    Transient hostname: localhost
    Pretty hostname: n/a
    Icon name: computer-desktop
    Chassis: desktop
    Machine ID: fcad978cb45784804c79ace4000004dc
    Boot ID: a282df65df6c4ed0910536ab38087300
    Operating System: Arch Linux
    Kernel: Linux 3.7.5-1-ARCH
    Architecture: x86_64
and for some ttys it is `localhost' while for others: `correct.one.obtained.from.dhcp'.
Looks like a kind of magic or systemd bug?

/etc/host allows static IP to name bindings. It has absolutely nothing to do with the problem described above.
We are using DHCP. A workstation can obtain any IP address (one of 200) and any name (one of 200) via DHCP. The workstation name can be work27 or work85 or work165 or work194 - I don't know it initially. I ask the DHCP server for it and the server sends me some. The daemon (service) that controls DHCP is responsible for obtaining it and setting for the system. Dhcpcd.service does it. Netcfg.service does it or does it not - depending on some random factor.

  • Establish IP from DHCP but no Internet or Extremely Slow

Synopsis: Net Macmin, New Ethernet Cat 6 cable (approx. 90 ft), DSL Comtrend Router.  IP Connects, slow to no internet.
Added a 90' cable and ends across store basement from front PC to router in rear of business.  Standard non-crossover Cat 6 cable properly crimped.  Get IP Address from DHCP on front MacMini but internet is extremely slow.  I re-ran the cable away from parallel to power conduit, still extremely slow.  The light on the port which this cable is plugged in flashes at high rate with no pause, unlike three other connected to router.
Front MacMini works fine over wifi, but retail software recommended ethernet connection to ensure reliability should interference occur over wifi.  When I'm testing the Ethernet I do shut off the wifi and have, since started testing, changed the service order so wifi is second chosen to ensure tesitng with ethernet is accurate when wifi is on.
When you try to load a webpage (I used google) through safari it loads 25% of the load bar and stops until it times out a few second later.  Used network utility to verify connection to goolge, it took a few seconds longer than wifi but was able to ping google.  I don't own a ethernet tester and would rather not buy one for one project.
Based on the ability to connect with IP address tells me the cable is able to talk back and forth with the router, correct?  I've read a lot about ethernet port issues, how common is this, what else could be causing the problem?
Internet Source: MyFairPoint DSL for Business
Network Hardware: Comtrend AR-5381u DSL Router
Other Hardware on Router: Second MacMini, Dell Tower, Color HP LaserJet
Thank you to whomever can help and everyone that lends feedback!

My plan is to bring my MBP to the shop later this week to test this out.  I wanted to put this out there to see if any other troubleshooting ideas were brought up.  Thanks for the input!

  • Wrong hostname in URL for broadcaster?!

    Hello all,
we (almost) successfully installed BI broadcaster in our productive BI 7.0 (after an upgrade).
But the URL in the mail contains the wrong hostname. Instead of the prd-host it contains the hostname of our BI development box.
Replacing the wrong hostname with the hostname of our productive box brings up the right document.
I could not find the place where to change the hostname. Does anybody have a hint where to look ?
The URL looks like this, but instead
    http://hostname_dev.domain.com:50000/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/pcd!3a
    Thanks for you help !

    Hi Satyabrat,
What is the version of the Solution manager system ?
Please delete the system in SLD and add it again using RZ70.
if u r using solman 7.01 version , goto smsy_setup and synchnorize the system details in SLD.
solman system version is 7.1 ,after system addition check the LMDB* job is completed.
then goto  se38 -> RLMDB_SYNC_TECHNICAL_SYSTEM run the report and select the system.
So it will delete all the old setting and synchronize and update the latest systen details.
Then try the managed system configuration, it will solve the issue.

    capture report https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=AFE3D0245A92F6F8%21183

The issue is that your machine is not being assigned an IP address / was unable to reach the DHCP server to receive one. The 169.254.x.x IP your machine is showing isn't assigned from DHCP, it's assigned by the local machine and is referred to as an APIPA
    address.
So something is preventing your machine from reaching your DHCP server, which could one of a number of things. In the first instance I'd suggest having a look at
http://epan36.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/eventid-1001-dhcp-your-computer-was-not.html which lists several of things that could cause this error and things you can try in order to resolve it.
If none of those work, can you confirm whether you have any other machines connecting via the same method on the network, which might indicate whether this is an issue at the machine end or somewhere between the machine and DHCP server?

  • AP gets always a new IP address from DHCP server

    Hello,
When an access points doesn't find a controller it gets always a new IP address from DHCP server.
    Does anyone know, why?
    thanks

    Hi,
From what I know this is to do with DHCP option 60 and 43.Normally when APs request for IP address, DHCP Server also returns the management IP Address of WLC if the VCI matches.
If the VCI sent by the AP does not match with the one configured under DHCP for that particulart AP type, the DHCP will never return the WLC IP and hence AP can not find the controller. And the AP keeps sending DHCP Req and sometimes end up getting two IP addresses!
So may be you can check VCI on DHCP server for that AP model.
    Let me know.
    Cheers

  • £130 wrongly taken from my bank account. Customer ...

£130 wrongly taken from my account on the 2nd, had to take a day off from work to ring BT customer services so lost a days pay and also got £60 bank charges from not being able to pay other direct debits. After customer services promised me the £130 paid back into my account within 24hours, they never did costing me an extra £30 for bank charge. Rang today (4th) and customer service man says, the £130 is sat here waiting to be paid into your bank account and will take 2-5 days to go into your account. After explaining to him that the money was meant to paid into my account the day before as promised and since cost me an extra £30 for bank charge. he started arguing with me saying they wouldn't of said that they would pay the money back within 24hours. I asked to speak to a supervisor for him to put me on hold then hang up the line.
Don't use BT, go elsewhere, I have already told 2 people of this matter & they are thinking of getting broadband elsewhere.
My service is no problem with BT so far bar this matter of them wrongly taking £130 from my account and costing me £90 bank charges as well as a days pay to then ring customer services and be accused of lying and put on hold and the line cut off.
    Thanks BT.

  • Unable to get IP address from DHCP

    hi all,
I have a AP1131 which cannot get IP from DHCP server. I have tried to configure static IP address and controller IP by lwapp command and the AP can successfully joined the controller. However, after I changed it to DHCP in WLC, it cannot get IP address and all lwapp config is gone. It cannot join the controller anymore only after I reset it and configure a static IP for it. The following error message appears after I changed it to DHCP in the WLC:

Any expert has some idea on it?
    Thanks.

Is that AP on the same subnet as the other AP's? The thing is, when you configure the AP with static information, you say the AP is able to join the WLC. This means that there is no issue with the AP. Now when you set the AP to use DHCP and not static, the AP does not obtain a DHCP address? Is that correct? If you have more than one AP on the same switch and on the same vlan, and only one has an issue, then maybe reset that AP to default and see if that fixes it. I'm also assuming that the vlan is being forwarded and you have enough dhcp address in the scope.

  • Wrong hostname setting after Sun Cluster failover

    Hi Gurus,
our PI system has been setup to fail over in a sun cluster with a virtual hostname s280m (primary host s280 secondary host s281)

Please note that the PI system is transparent about the Failover system used.
When you configure the parameters against the mentioned note, this means that in case one of the nodes is down, the load will be sent to another system under the same Web Dispatcher/Load Balancer.
When using the Solaris failover solution, it covers the whole environment, including the web dispatcher, database and all nodes.
Therefore, please check the configuration as per the page below, which talks specifically about the Solaris failover solution for SAP usage:

  • Migrating from DHCP 2003 to DHCP 2012

    Hi,
i'm planning to migrate from DHCP 2003 to DHCP 2012 or DHCP 2012 R2 failover.
    Saw those instructions:
    extract the configuration in .TXT
netsh dhcp server export c:\temp\dhcp.txt all
copy this file on your server 2012 in temp or elsewhere
import the configuration with this command
netsh dhcp server import c:\temp\dhcp.txt all
if you have the error "TLS supported but not configured"
remove all the option in "Server Option" like 003 Router 006 DNS SERVERS and put it back after doing the import
    now i have some questions:
    1. is it recommended to build 2 2012 DHCP configured as failover on virtual machines ? (hyper-V)
    2. do those dhcp servers have to or recommended to be DNS also or can they be only DHCP servers ?
    3. my AD functionality level is 2003 - is it a problem for this migration ?
    4. virtual or physical ? whats is recommended ?
    5. any other considerations ?
    TNX

    Hi,
Virtual or physical will both work. It doesn't matter, as long as the two servers can communicate with each other.
You do not need DNS installed on the same server, but you can install it without hurting anything.
I believe that the AD level has no effect because you can have DHCP failover even on workgroup computers.
