~/.xinitrc not being run with GNOME

I installed GNOME in a fairly normal way, and it starts as soon as the boot sequence has finished, without manually typing `startx` or similar. I recently made the ~/.xinitrc file with this content:
#!/bin/sh
# ~/.xinitrc
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
[ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
done
unset f
fi
unclutter &
exec gnome-session
# exec startkde
# exec startxfce4
# ...or the Window Manager of your choice
However, this (notably the `unclutter &` line) doesn't seem to be run, and GNOME starts in the same was as it always did. I can't find any mention of this file in the startup scripts. Have I got to add it to /etc/gdm/Xsession or something?
I can go to a TTY and run `startx` from that. That gives me `unclutter` working as expected. I can also run `unclutter &` manually on the first DE, which works as expected.

mudri wrote:I could use that, but isn't there a way that I could use the generic .xinitrc so that, if I ever change DEs, the new DE will still run unclutter?
If you choose GDM you have to play it GDM-way.
.xinitrc or alike are meant to be started by xinit-like wrappers (e.g., startx).
GDM is actually starting .xsession script. So you should be able to make it work with:
ln -s ~/.xinitrc ~/.xsession
If I can recall correctly GDM will pass the name of the item which you have chosen in its GUI menu (e.g., default, fallback).
You have to understand (look it up) how it exactly works.
Probably best place to start looking is /etc/X11/Xsession.

  • [Xcode] Error from Debugger: Program not being run

All of a sudden my Cocoa-AppleScript projects are not being run with *Build and Run* in Xcode 3.2.2. Well, most of them anyway - some old, and some downloaded projects are OK, but projects that ran OK yesterday give me an error today:Running…
    No executable file specified.
Use the "file" or "exec-file" command.
    No executable file specified.
Use the "file" or "exec-file" command.
The program being debugged is not being run.
The program being debugged is not being run.
No project settings were changed (I don't even use the debugger, just the console), and the only thing that I've done in the mean time is a software update. The only thing new from that was a Java update, which I don't think should have had anything to do with it. I was having the same problem even building new blank projects, but I've since updated to 3.2.4 and reset the Xcode preferences, which at least got the blank projects going again.
I've compared some of the settings between projects that work and projects that don't, but I have no idea what to look for. The built applications will run when double-clicked by themselves, just not in Xcode.
Update: zipping the project files and then unzipping them seems to fix the issue, but I would like to know what to look for that could have caused this problem.

AHA! Well, although I could have sworn I ran some of these projects from their current location, the problem wound up being related to characters in the name of one of the containing folders.
I sometimes use leading spaces in the folder names to get them to sort to the top of the list, but even doing that you sometimes need to use additional characters to get the items to sort in the desired way. One of the characters I used (a tilde) seems to get expanded by one of the underlying utilities - my archived projects were in this folder, while other downloaded examples (and copies I had made to other locations) worked since they were outside of the problem folder. It was weird that pretty much everything else ran correctly, though.
Lesson learned - do NOT use characters that may be special to a shell script in any of your project file paths.

  • Iphone 4 not being recognized with the extension cable

My Iphone 4 is not being recognized with the Apple extension cable in my new Nissan Juke so the phone has to be kept in the glovebox due to the very short cable Nissan provides. This is frustrating since the phone gets noticeably worse reception in the glovebox. Does anyone know of a fix for this so I can run a longer cable extension and run the phone out of the glovebox? Mabye a different extension cable or longer cable that works with Nissan's set up?

I don't think it is the cable. I have tried plugging the cable into the USB cable that came with the phone and the extension cable works fine with it. I guess this really is just some screwy stuff with Nissan.

  • CcmEval Scheduled task not being created with "Access Denied" error 0x80070005 only on XP machines

Before coming on here I checked out http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ddbfe6c3-ee54-4b2a-a3a7-a6515d974f76/client-check-failed-on-xpserver-2003-systems-onlyccmeval-is-not-being-scheduled?forum=configmanagerdeployment (GPO

That said, I'm having an issue many seem to have, but I can't find the answer. From what I understand SCCM uses the user context to create the CcmEval task, but in XP users cannot set a task to run as any other user (ie SYSTEM in this instance) so what is
the workaround? I can't just give users Administrator permissions to install the client.

The bolded section is what's telling me it's Access Denied, and manual creation of any program task set to run as SYSTEM tells me the same- users cannot do this; only admins can.
    What can I do?

So after sifting through some RSOP results and GPO objects I found a policy that wasn't necessarily prohibiting creation of them. (Not where you think it would be - under
Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Task Scheduler > "Prohibit New Task Creation" -
this was set to allow them) but this one I found was a File Permissions policy that set SYSTEM permissions to READ and EXECUTE.
I've changed this to FULL CONTROL for SYSTEM. I'm unable to get on the machines to examine everything closely, but from what I can see at least one of them has remediated themselves and now has a successful client check in the console. Hopefully the rest
of them will come around as GP updates itself and the client does an evaluation to remediate the Scheduled Task.
Hopefully this helps someone in the future as well.

  • [SOLVED] DWM running with gnome difficulties - cracked leaving GNOME!

UPDATE: concept as a perceived requirement has been scrubed. No longer needing Gnome's environment ... just some gtk/gnome libraries here and there though, obviously. See last post of mine here if ya like and you're rushed a bit.
Having problems getting gnome to live with DWM though I can compile myself as i just learned how from the wiki.
OBJECTIVE: retain at least the bottom menu bar of gnome (and program access) for a while yet ....  while using DWM.
Hi... having the most amazing time with Xmonad, awesome, stumpwm, dmenu etc.
At this point I've realized that Xmonad and DWM have basically the same keybinding.
For how it work WELL, as it's an originator, and keeping it simple ummm.... was it 18k or 180k?  hehehe  (see other posts about dwm) I'm going to go with dwm for the forseeable future. they're all great though having done the studying it's really a simple decision.... If I wanted to swap to something else later I'd have the skill to know how simple that would be... dwm does cover ALL of what I sensibly need to work quickly and SIMPLY/manageably...
DUE TO UPDATE COMMENT AT TOP  - SOME OF THE NEXT COUPLE OF POST IS REDUNDANT a BIT though maybe not:
So... I'm wishing to be able to access my folders and programs through the gnome menu as a fail-safe until I figure out how to get around any gottcha before I reinstall WITHOUT gnome (just some of the libraries obviously for packages that need them)
I really need to get going immediately with DWM and having had lots of fun with Xmonad (works easily with gnome though i like the simplicity of default DWM) ...
ALL I really need is what I now have left of gnome's desktop visibility which is the bottom bar with a menu applet embeded in it...
Actually.... IF there's a way to GRAPHICALLY see folders ie. boot programs without having to find the binary though would be cool.
Gnome can do it's thing in the background.... though right now ALL I can get by adding DWM WITH metacity in the gnome sessions properties leaves me WITHOUT the bootom bar that gets me to my programs...
    yep, duh.
any assistance apreciated as I can't stand working without dwm (or similar tiling wm) though I'm too new at it and generally not skilled enough at this move to get to my program's ICONS...  using dmenu for all booting just isn't practical for me today..  then again who knows what the next hour will bring! hehehe
So..... ANYONE have DWM code that'll work??? .... I think I'd prefer it to be stock otherwise...
whatver happens thanks and everything's so cool.... have learned SO much....

well as i remember, my own path was something like this...
    Windozes -> PCLinuxOS -> (K-X)Ubuntu -> Arch(XFCE4(desktop environment)) -> Arch(Fluxbox(no DE)) -> Arch(wmii+gnu/screen) -> Arch(dwm+gnu/screen)
not talking about GNU/screen its like not talking about breathing to me right now at the beggining (like all i pass throught in GNU/linux) i can barely understand something "as complex" to understand like screen, but using it, showed me that EVERYTHING is a matter of understanding throught direct experience
so i'll recommend to you that you start looking to gnu/screen, is so damn easy to configure/use once you understand it, but difficult when you start reading about it, like dwm is in first place
what i do for file assosiations and such is using midnight commander (cli-file manager) and i edited a menu (F2 on a dir/file) and it popups showing the list of apps that i configured to open that file extension, i configured tuxcmd in the past but i didnt used it for months now...
here's the ~/.mc/menu i did... (i use urxvt as a daemon starting "urxvtd -q -f -o &" in .xinit, you may change "urxvtc" with your terminal emulator of choice... (i hope it will be urxvt(c) and not something like gnome-terminal )

  • XMP files not being created with DNGs...

I'm used to using Bridge with ACR to process Nikon NEFs. But a recent camera update has me experimenting with converting the D3's NEFs to DNG files and editing them with CS2 and Bridge 1.04 which works better on my system. I've also experimented with CS3 and Bridge 2.1.1.9 with the same DNG files.
In both cases XMP files are not being created when working with DNG files. I have enabled "Save image settings in : Sidecar ".xmp" files" turned ON. But they do not seem to be generated and I assume the ACR adjustments are being embedded in the DNG file. Meanwhile doing edits on NEF files continues to create .xmp files as expected.
I find .xmp files to be very useful and I'm wondering why they're missing with DNG files? Are they hiding somewhere other than in the same folder that the images reside in?
    Thanks.
    Russell

    > The information contained in the XMP file is stored in the DNG file so there is no need for a separate file.
Aww, yuck!! That's a real drag...
When editing lots of files (yesterday's shoot produced 8GB) I back everything up to off-line storage and then, after doing all my edits and crops in ACR, I only have to copy over the small XMP files which takes no time at all.
So if I re-edit the DNG with ACR I have to re-copy ALL the files again to the off-line storage.
I used to sometimes even save 2 versions of the xmp files when I needed 2 different crops of the same images, such as doing a wide screen 'cinema' crop for a corporate client's Intranet presentation of their event, as well as more standard crops to be used for their newsletters.
Guess I won't be using DNG any more..
Thanks for the help Kees :-)

  • Images not being sent with forwarded emails

    Hi,
When I forward an email sent to me that has attached images, those images are not being sent when I forward the email.
Yes, I am being asked to "Include" the attachments, and I click the Include button.
I see the images in my message to be forwarded just before I send it, but the recipient does not get the images.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Forwarding Mail fails to include pictures

Recently I've had a problem with my iPhone 3Gs when I forward an email that contains graphics. The graphic is fine on my iPhone but when it arrives the picture is missing. I am selecting 'include graphics'.
    I've re-booted - no change.
I've restored from a backup - no change.
I've restored without using the backup - no change (other than I lost a couple email accounts etc.)
    Anybody got any other suggestions?
    TIA

I have been having the same issue since late September and been in touch with Apple support since. First they said they had no other reports on it so it was my phone. I started checking and found many other with the same issue. I called back and finally in November I was told they were aware of the issue and was working on it. The first week of January I called again and was told the update first week of February was going to correct this. I did the new software update and guest what....IT STILL DOESN'T WORK!!! It is now February 14th and I am on the phone once again for the same issue that was known back in October 2009. I am paying $30 for data plan that I can not utilize 100%. My question after being patient for 5 months is who is going to refund me a portion of my data plan? Apple or AT&T?? This is a software problem that really needs addressed. Apple just releases an iPAD and can't correct this email issue??

  • IPod Not being recognized with all the software updates

I've been without my iPod for a few weeks now and I desperately want it back. I dropped it a while back, and have come online to look up stuff to restore it, but none of that is working for me. I reset it by pressing "menu" and "Play" at the same time, then put it into disk mode by pressing the "ff" and "rwd" buttons together, but even in disk mode my computer is not recognizing it at all. The iPod screen says that it is in disk mode, and says it's okay to disconnect, but its not giving me the option to restore when I connect it to my computer and open the iPod updater.
It also gives me the file folder w/ an exclamation point whenever i don't put it into disk mode. And the few times that my computer does pick up something the iPod updater flashes a message that says "Can't Mount iPod" and then the updater manually closes itself. Anyone know what to do?
    Thanks
20GB with Dock Connector   Windows XP

For "Cant mount iPod" - please try the following first
    Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management
-- Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”
-- Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused (Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” or something similar)
    -- Safely eject the iPod
    -- Reboot the PC
If still cant solve it then
The Sad iPods icon, clicking sound or folder with an exclamation mark are the toughest problems to deal with, and must do a Restore in order to fix it. However, when your iPod is showing this icon, it is probably too late for your computer to recognize the iPod.
    1. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    2. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    Still can't see your iPod?
Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
    3. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    5. Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    6. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    7. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. We've found that in many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
There are also some cases being reported that some unrecognized iPod being able to be erased with Linux, then reconnect the iPod with the original computer and do a Restore there.
    8. Try to do an Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a format with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer). You may need to plug and unplug your iPod with the computer for several attempts, and switching around Format and Restore, and hope out of sudden, it will get recognized.
    9. Diagnostic mode solution – which I copied from a thread of a post from thinktwice
“Then I cam across this special Diganostics Mode that you can get to by resetting and then while the Apple is showing pressing the Select and backwards keys simultaneously. It bring up and weird Diagnostic utility witha a abunch of tests. Here is what I did
    - I tried the 5in1 test and got and error on Firewire.
    - I did the HDD R/W and surprisingly it passed.
    - I went on to the HDD scan. This supposedly tkaes acouple of minute so I waited. I think 4-5 dots appeared then nothing. The iPod started to get hot. THe disk was spinning away. After a while the battery got very low. THis test chews up the battery. So I escaped out by resetting and went to connect it to a power source.
My USB was dangling out of my computer and I was too lazy to get the Firewire AC adapter thing going so I connected expecting the whole lockup thing with iTunes. Surprise. IT was recognized immediately and has been working like a champ. So go figure.
Details on Diag mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml
    10. Let me ask you a question, if an iPod with no iPod software with it. When your connect it with a computer, what would happen?
Yeah, the computer will treat it as a fresh external hard disk, which will get force mounted, the computer will ask you to format the iPod. It does not really matter the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted iPod software on the iPod, after that the computer will recognize it.
Once it has been completed, eject your iPod, open the iPod updater and interestingly, you will able to do the Restore this time.
Base on the above, that's why I suggest Windows users who experience trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac machine or vice versa. PC computer will not recognize a Mac formatted iPod, but it will get mounted in an attempt to format your iPod.
    11. Put your iPod in disk mode and plug with a computer, and have a boot of your computer using the Mac OS or XP startup disks, hope that your iPod will be seen on Mac's Disk utility and allow you to do a Erase there. Or, under the XP, you will be able to find your iPod there for you to do a Restore.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.
I have just read an interesting solution about the Sad iPod, it does make sense but the warranty will be waived once you open the iPod, I would not do it myself as I am not good on doing this

  • Windows Network Drive Mapping properties not being associated with Test Stand deployment

I recently upgraded a TestStand/LabVIEW (Developer Suite 2012 DS1) deployment project from a Windows XP Pro OS to Windows 7 Enterprise. Now, when I run the Test Stand deployment, Network paths that used to be hard coded into my File Globals are no longer recognized. I re-wrote the vi's, and put "File Dialog" pop-ups so that I could see what path the control is being opened up at, and what appears to be happening is the Network Drive that I am defaulted to is appearing as if it is "disconnected" in the navigation window, and the path is defaulted to my root directory. I can navigate out to my network path no problem from the navigation window, and after the first time I perform this user action, subsequent executions open up to the path I have hard coded in my Sequence File Globals. However, if I reboot my host computer, I again have to go through the exercise of manually pointing to the proper network location? If I use the Windows Explorer to check Mapped Networked Drives, everything is properly mapped and connected.
Has anyone ever seen this behavior?

    Hi ATE Dude 22,
I have not come across this problem before but here is a document from MSDN and one from NI which discuss file path conventions. From what I've seen, UNC is also accepted under Windows XP so I would advise using it for your file globals.

  • Z77A GD-65: Windows 7 not installing/running with Intel SATA controller.

I've been having some weird issues with the Intel SATA controllers on-board. They won't let me install Windows at all. I'm using a Crucial m4 with the 0309 firmware.
When I was trying to install Windows with the SSD connected to the Intel SATA controller, installation would always fail sometime around the "Completing Installation" segment. I tried ACHI mode, IDE mode, nothing worked.
So I decided to try hooking up my SSD to the ASMedia controller instead, despite that being advised against. Windows was able to install and run fine on that connection. After that, I installed all of Intel's chipset drivers and all the updates available for Windows, hoping it would resolve the problem.
Then, I connected the SSD to the Intel port again. Now I get a BSOD every time I try to start windows, even though it has drivers for the chipset available.
I'm really upset by this... it seems like I'm going to have to settle for inferior SATA 6 performance just so I can run Windows. :(

Quote from: Warner on 24-May-12, 03:58:56
You can't install OS with ASMEDIA port, and then switch to Intel port.
So basically, if I can't get it to install on the Intel port, I'm stuck using the other one... well, the performance isn't optimal, but I guess it's acceptable as a failsafe. Better than nothing.

Try doing a new installation based on the Intel port, load Intel driver on HDD screen, and proceed.
What Intel driver do I need, and how do I load it during Windows installation?
