XML Workflow

Noob to XML workflow here and I have a few questions. Any help and all patience is gratelly appreciated.
The manager of our co. database advised me he could give me a xml file for all the data of many products if I could get him a dtd file,, thus should I
1. Create the table then tag the cells
2. export the XML and use a online dtd generator like this /http://www.hitsw.com/xml_utilites/
A few more questions if I may
1. I'm using CS3 so are there any considerations or limitations to using tables and XML?
2. Are tables the best way to go about organizing this data for use with XML?

My advice would be to avoid tables as much as possible for XML. (They can be useful sometimes, if the structure of original XML is very uniform, with different types of data in the same tags.)
If someone has asked you for a DTD, rather than the other way around, I presume that means you have control over the final agreed structure of the XML files you import. Rejoice! Use your powers to shape structure well -- and avoid tables. I think.

  • Place images in XML workflow

    Hi
    I have placed figures to its nearest citations in non XML workflow.
    For XML workflow, I have placed figure and its captions in two frames and grouped them. I move the group to the corresponding citation page. My xml structure remains unchanged.
    Now my need is to place the group in the next paragraph of citation. Can you help me?

  • Footnotes and notecalls in XML workflow for InDesign

    I'm a french typesetter working on a project using XML workflow with a large number of footnotes. I have been searching for hours the right way to prepare the XML workflow so I would get all the notecalls and footnotes once the workflow imported in my InDesign file. Thanks in advance to any helping hand.

    I wish I could express myself in another language as well as you handle English -- and my bread and butter is typesetting text that is challenging linguistically.
    However, I also like to think of my work as setting type, and because I associate XML with robot formatting I am inherently biased against it.  Perhaps I'll learn better, but currently I'm not a good source for information on XML.
    Still, as I see it XML attempts to come up with a single source for output in various formats.  InDesign is really good for making PDF's ready for the press or for distribution electronically: it defines documents in terms of pages and offers precise control over what goes where on every page.  This is very important in my work, scholarly material that generally includes linguistic oddities requiring absolute control over fonts.  Meanwhile, footnotes -- which of course assume there are pages at whose foot they can sit -- have always been an afterthought in ID, omitted from early versions, and still the subject of many complaints for their inflexibility.
    Thus two early questions are:
    Is InDesign footnoting capable of doing what you need?  My guess is yes so long as you can tweak in ID; but if not then whoever gets tasked with using the masters you develop may not appreciate having to string a separate story of footnotes by hand across the bottoms of pages.
    Do you need to get from ID back to XML?  I've already mentioned that getting ID footnotes back into XML is a significant issue, but there are other factors: if you use ID PDFs for proofing but the ID files are not going back to XML then corrections must be made to both the XML and ID files.  And whether or not you export ID back to XML you get to figure out which ID tweaks are needed in the XML.
    Software manuals tend to explain what the software can do and omit discussion of what one might wish it could do.  One of the things I appreciate about Dorothy J. Hoskins's brief 2013 book XML and InDesign is her chapter "What InDesign Cannot Do (or Do Well) with XML," though she this isn't the only place she discusses philosophical conflicts between ID and XML.  She also touches on the value of XSLT transformations and scripting for wrangling XML, and mentions useful tidbits about Maidvald’s book since its 2007 publication.
    Good luck!

  • Find untag contents in XML workflow

    Hi All,
    Is it possible to find the untag contents in the xml workflow??
    (i.e.,) I need to alert the paragraph start with "Feria vendaepudae........" having untag contents.
    Kindly help to find the solution.
    Regards
    Siraj

    Hi Siraj,
    I did not work with xml, but I found a property 'associatedXMLElements' and create the following example:
    One textframe, a list with 5 paragraphs. The list is part of a xml-file and all paragraphs without the first and last paragraph are tagged.
    var tFrame = app.selection[0];
    var frameParas = tFrame.paragraphs;
    for ( var i = 0; i < frameParas.length; i ++ ) {
        var curPara = frameParas[i];
        if ( curPara.associatedXMLElements.length == 1 ) {
            curPara.select();
            alert( "Found" );
        } // end if
    } // end for
    The length of the 'associatedXMLElements' tagged paras is 2, while the length of the untagged paras is 1.

  • Where is XML workflow in LOGIC?

    You got my money APPLE, so WHERE IS THE XML WORKFLOW IN LOGIC?!@?

    As of August 2014, MusicXML is supported to varying degrees by over 180 notation programs.[11][12] These programs include:
    Most scorewriting programs, including Finale, Sibelius, and MuseScore.
    Most Music OCR programs, including SmartScore and PhotoScore.
    Many music sequencer programs, including Cubase, Logic Pro, SONAR (v.X2 onwards), and Rosegarden.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MusicXML
    Okay, so evidently being such a naive person, I hoped I would be able to import and export Scores into Logic PRO X, in a hopefully non-convoluted way reminiscent of trying to export a simple midi file out of GarageBand.   Can anybody out there relate?

  • Artifacts showing up in my file-- send to--- color XML workflow

    I lurked these forums, couldn't find anything covering this issue.
    I am kicking out my picture lock from FCP to Color using the file -> send to-> Color utility.
    When Color opens up, with my XML data in the timeline the image in my viewport ends about 100 pixels from my frame. the remaining 100 pixels are artifacts generated by taking the final pixel in every row and repeating them to edge of my 2048x1024 frame, looking like a stretch filter was applied on it in After Effects.
    These are not in my 2k prores HQ clips in FCP.
    My project settings look okay.
    Where should i start trouble shooting this?
    The clips are Apple Prores HQ 24fps
    thanks in advance, folks.

    What video card are you using?
    On the project I just wrapped I noticed the same thing when pulling up still stores. The bottom 100 pixels or so seemed to have come from a previous image. Toggling the still store on/off fixed the issue. But every time I pulled up a new image on the SS I'd have to toggle it to fix.
    This happened on both a ProRes and a DVCPro HD workflow.

  • Xml workflow/layout question - urgent

    Hi,
    I'm new to the XML scene and have made progress but have the following question.
    I have a .xls file that I open in Oxygen (xml editor) and save out a .xml file.
    I then import the .xml file into InDesign CS5.
    I have tagged the text placeholders and the image placeholders with the appropriate tags (not shown in this screen grab).
    I'd like to automatically flow the text data (A-E, J-O) into a text box (on the right side of image), then flow the images (E-I) into the picture boxes on the left side of the page. There is a large amount of data (InDesign pages) so it is important that  I configure this so that all of the content flows automatically  thoughout the InDesign file.
    Do the images need to be treated as anchored objects in a text box or is it possible to flow them into picture boxes?
    I can manually drag the "product_image" files to the picture boxes but I have yet to figure out how to automatically flow these images into the layout, aside from within the same text box as the rest of the text. Instead of using the anchored object approach, it seems it would be more efficient to flow into picture boxes if possible.
    Also, any feedback on how to get this data to flow automically thoughout the InDesign file would be really helpful.
    Thanks so much.
    Josh

    Hi,
    It is possibly to flow the images into picture boxes without treating them as anchored objects.Appropriately tagging the placeholders for graphics and text and then importing the XML file would allow the data (both text and images) to flow automatically into the respective tagged frames.

  • Table Handling in XML Indesign Workflow

    Hi all,
    I have a question related to the table handling in XML workflow.
    The XML file have been imported to indesign for pagination purpose. Once the XML file have been imported all the tables and figure are came in Text Streams as INLINE, to make the figures and tables as floats we are draging from the XML structure to make it as floating instead of Inline, this is working for Figure.
    I am not able to drag the tables from the XML structure.
    Please help us to make the table float, is there is any script to make the table float or any other way.......
    kavya

    Hi Kavya,
    You have to create a dummy parent tag, now you can drag the parent tag to the frame.

  • How to handle abstract XML elements with XMLBeans

    Hello,
    I have an xsd that uses abstract elements, and i wanted to ask you how can i create new XML Documents with XMLBeans? My problems is that i don't know how to handle abstaction with XMLBeans.
    Let me show you a very simple example to make you understand my problem :
    Suppose we have the following schema :
    <xsd:schema targetNamespace="http://www.example.org" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns="http://www.example.org">
         <xsd:element name="Customer" type="CustomerType" />
         <xsd:complexType name="CustomerType" abstract="true" />
         <xsd:complexType name="PremiumCustomerType">
              <xsd:complexContent>
                   <xsd:extension base="CustomerType">
                        <xsd:sequence>
                             <xsd:element name="CreditCard" type="xsd:string" />
                        </xsd:sequence>
                   </xsd:extension>
              </xsd:complexContent>
         </xsd:complexType>
    </xsd:schema>I use XMLBeans to create a jar with java classes according the xsd above. Then, in order to create a new xml document i use the following code :
    CustomerDocument cd = CustomerDocument.Factory.newInstance();
    CustomerType ct = cd.addNewCustomer();
    PremiumCustomerType pct = PremiumCustomerType.Factory.newInstance();
    ct.changeType(pct.schemaType());With this code i get an XML Document like the following :
    <Customer type="PremiumCustomerType" />But after that, i cannot add an element CreditCard into this Customer element. Can anyone help me?

    In Indesign there is no way you can directly work on the XML-IN footnote, since indesign won't support XML tags in footnote stream.
    To achive that you need to have XSLT/Perl/Indesign Scripting.
    This task is achievable, you can create a auto footnote for XML workflow projects.
    1. Create an XSLT to transform the footnote to the respective places
    2. Change all the "<" ">" to some standard names, since indesign won't accept XML tags in the footnote stream.
    3. Import it in indesign and using script convert it to autofootnote.

  • Efficient workflow for annual report

    I've been busy last days to make an annual report. The source file was a 100+ page Word document with lot's of tables with different content and sizes, and legal texts with multi level list styles.
    I think I got most out the importing of the Word file and converting all Word styling to the right Indesign styles, but the tables seem to be very time consuming still, as some are just text listings and others contain many numbers in various structures, sub headings and specifically highlighted cells.
    I bet there's a much more efficient workflow for this and I try to find out about it. I'm afraid I couldn't ask the financial people to start working in a XML workflow, Incopy or anything much different from the Word+Excel software they are used to. However I reckon there's a better way they could deliver the content to me, maybe by giving separate excel sheets instead of embedded tables in Word or by using stricter formatting rules?
    Ideally the workflow should also support the flexibility of linked Word/Excel files, so revised input would painlessly be updated into the formatted Indesign document.
    Does anybody has any advice, tips/tricks to make a smarter workflow for such a project?

    FWIW I create a new, separate library for each book.  I assemble the photos to be used in to an album in the main library and then copy it to the book library with the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager.
    When I'm done with the book and it's ordered I cull out the photos I didn't use in the book and then archive the book library to another HD, a CD or DVD disk (if small enough to fit).  This way the book is isolated from the day to day use of my main library and any accidental deletions of photos in the book.  If I want to reorder a copy, edited or not,  I know the book is intact.

  • Pls suggest for new xml flow in InDesign...

    Hi everyone,
    we have pitched into the new xml workflow in InDesign. Basically it looks like Pearson ETM XML workflow followed in Quarkxpress.
    Please go through this sample pearson xml coding followed in quark:
    DUE TO PROBLEM IN POSTING WE HAVE CHANGED < > AS [ ] IN ALL TAGS.
    [unitPart id=c01-upt-0001]
    [title]Defining the Realm[/title]
    [sect1 id=c01-sec1-0001]
    [title]Geographical Features[/title]
    [p]As Figure [xref target=c01-fig-0001/] shows, For many centuries Europe has been a hearth of achievement, innovation, and invention.[figureAnchor figures=c01-fig-0001/][/p]
    [sect2 id=c01-sec2-0001]
    [title][huc]E[/huc]uropes Eastern Border[/title]
    [p]The European realm is bounded on the west, north, and south by Atlantic, Arctic, and Mediterranean waters, respectively.Chapters [anchor id=c01-anc-0001/] and [anchor id=c01-anc-0002/].[/p][/sect2]
    Here our customer asked to proceed the same above xml structure in InDesign.
    For example: in above xml [title] tag comes under [sect1] tag as well as [sect2] tag. In Quarkxpress, we can control this [sect1] after [title] tag as [H1] style and [sect2] after [title] tag as [H2] style and so on through CPL rules.
    Here we struggle to follow the above process with InDesign. Because in InDesign if we pour the above xml the [title] tag should treated as [title] style only.
    So please guide and help us whether it is possible to follow the above xml process in InDesign....
    Thanks in Advance
    Thiyagu

    It's one of the major differences between Quark and ID.
    ID has a "paragraph composer" as will as a single line composer like Quark's, and it's on by default. When you use the paragraph composer the text is constantly analyzed and spacing adjusted for the best fit and appearance (according to the spacing algorithm and your justification settings) for the entire paragraph. If you force a line break, ID may adjust all the lines above as well as the lines that follow.
    If this is a "serious problem" you shoud probably witch to the single line composer. You'll find a drop down for it in the paragraph style definitin dialog under the Justification settings, or you can change an individual paragraph as a local override from the Control panel flyout menu.
    Most of us whove been ID users for some time find the paragraph composer to be one of the strenghts of ID, and feel it generates nicer looking text than a single line composer.
