Xorg 1.9.0 + nvidia 256.53 Performance Regression

Just thought I'd share in-case anyone else has this issue.
PROBLEM:
After upgrading to xorg-server 1.9.0 I noticed text rendering was painfully sluggish,
this effect was most noticeable in my terminals (urxvt), when drawing text from
IRC or scrolling other text output.
I found the issue discussed here:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthr … 563&page=4
and at the end the helpful Nvidia developer provided a fix
in Nvidia 260.19.06.
SOLUTION:
install aur/nvidia-beta (260.19.06)
which clears up the issue with nvidia slow text-rendering with xorg 1.9.0
thank the lord nvidia cares about linux users! (a little bit anyways)

I am having frequent Xorg crashes with the Nvidia beta driver. For instance, if I run Unetbootin or Skype is crashes as soon as I launch them. I figure this may be a combination of Xorg 1.9, Nvidia-beta, and qt 4.7.0-2.
I am beginning to think that this is because I have three monitors and dual cards.

Also, I am running XMonad 0.9.1-8 and 64bit Arch if it helps.
Does anyone know when an update is coming to fix these issues?

  • Xorg.conf for T510 + NVIDIA NVS 3100M

    Can you send me, or point me to a website with a working and well tuned xorg.conf for T510 + NVIDIA NVS 3100M.
    I've had a few problems creating one myself and I am sure that many people have good working X configurations.
    I am using Kubuntu 11.04.

    For me this works great, just add or replace this section in your xorg,conf

    The guys at Tweakers Asylum have built a Public nVidia Detonator Driver Performance Database used to store information on the various nVidia Detonator Drivers. They are collecting benchmark information, based on 3DMark2001 SE results for nVidia Detonator Drivers.

    My system halts whenever I do certain applications such as Windows Media player. audio cleaning Lab 2005 deLuxe, and recordings..... it happens all the time.  However, PC does not crash at other times.
    I thought it was my old GeForce3 Ti200 in the first place so I changed it to GeForce4 Ti4600 and the problem is still there :(
    I refreshed Win98se and downloaded updates from Microsoft.  I ran memtest68, Registry mechanics, Anti-virus - all successful but still my PC crashes!   By the way, my PSU is http://www.jeantech.com/Products/Power_Supply/400W/400w.html (+3.3v @ 28A, +5v @ 35A, +12v @ 17A).   This is my new PSU replacing my old PSU 300W just few weeks ago.   I suppose this PSU is rubbish! right?
    Any suggestions here?

  • Nvidia 256.44-1 warning!

    Hi, I've got 240gt. After upgrading to nvidia 256.44-1, I got lots of hard freeze. Its a prerelease driver but for some unknown reason its not in the testing repo. 256.35 is fine. Beware.

    haha well this is all messed up, works on 330 but not 335 nor 360. so what should I do, or more to  the point, is Mr/Mrs pro able to hold my hand and guide me through this mess of put .35 back on my system.
    As I have install .44 five times and dont want to install it again to make sure I not some else. It's clearly to me 256.44...
    SO were should I start in to getting my system to dance with 256.35
    I won't hold your hand (nor will many others on this forum I think) but I can tell you to search our wiki for "downgrade" or "downgrade apps" or similar.  That will bring up a page that will show you how to downgrade things in a fairly consistent way so if you ever have this problem again you can fix it. I also suggest you read about how to get pacman to ignore packages so that it will not upgrade your video driver again until a stable driver is available for you.

  • [Solved]Xorg 1.6 with nvidia 180.44 2D performance painfully slow

    Hi folks,
    Since the latest upgrade of Xorg and Nvidia all screen refreshes have become visibly very slow. Anything that has to redraw the whole screen takes a full second and my cpu usage jumps to 15%. The wierd thing is that glxgears is getting 200fps and looks perfectly smooth. Direct rendering is enabled and the client and server versions of the driver match. There are no errors in the Xorg.0.log apart from warnings about ACPI
    I am using an Nvidia 6200 in TwinView mode with 2 identical monitors.

    Also try to run some game to see whether it will work.
    Already done:
    direct rendering: Yes
    And I'm at work, no games sorry
    I lowered the colour depth to 16bpp and it's a little bit faster on window refreshes. It's good enough to be usable but it's still annoying.

  • Xorg not working with NVidia card on laptop.

    Hi, I'm new here, but have been using other distros for a while now.
    My problem is that whenever i try to use the discrete graphics Xorg freezes and the logs say something about not having a valid display for the card.
    The Intel graphics work fine for most things, but for example Steam doesn't launch because of a missing GLX plugin or something.
    GDM and Gnome also just give me a "something went wrong" instead of letting me log in or use the desktop (lxdm + kde works fine).
    My configs:

    I had a similar issue but i solved it following the instructions explained here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bu … l.2FNVIDIA.
    I also reccomend you to install the bbswitch package which disables NVIDIA discrete graphics card when isn't used.

  • Xorg 1.8 and nvidia backlight

    Hi everybody,
    I hope this is the right place to ask, I posted here and not in testing since Xorg moved to extra and I updated from there.
    I own a Sony Vaio S series laptop, and I was able to control the screen's brightness by installing the nvidia-bl module from AUR and loading it with options max_level=130944 shift=7.
    Furthermore, in order to let gnome to work with the Fn key, I had to use the following HAL preprobe rule to disable the other brightness settings:
    alessandro@alessandro-lappy:~$ sudo cat /etc/hal/fdi/preprobe/sony.fdi
    Password:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <deviceinfo version="0.2">
    <device>
    <!-- Ignore backlight interface created by sony_laptop
    -->
    <match key="linux.sysfs_path" string="/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0">
    <merge key="info.ignore" type="bool">true</merge>
    </match>
    </device>
    </deviceinfo>
    However, I have no idea how to achieve the same effect with Xorg 1.8 without HAL. I googled this stuff and found nothing.
    Thanks in advance for any help .
    Cheers,
    Alessandro

    That is something I might do. However, since HAL is going to be deprecated and this one is the only issue preventing me from getting rid of it, I would like to see if there is a way to solve it.
    Thanks a lot for your kind answer,
    Alessandro

  • Xorg 1.8 and nvidia drivers 'nvidia-xconfig' NEED tip to fix

    [what part of my xorg.conf needs to me moved, and to where?]
    Hi, I routinely swap between intel, savage, nvidia drivers running my ARCH install off my USB.
    Ok, so I'm using xorg 1.8 and the intel works though of course the nividia with nvidia-xconfig command writes and xorg.conf to
    /etc/X11
    Right, so I am aware, I believe the it's now the xorg.d folder. and, it currenly has 3 files in it, none of which say
    xorg.conf of course. The three are named starting with '10-'  you know the ones. :-)
    So, what, where, how  with my xorg.cong of other, do i get myself running again? With your help i'd say!
    thanks.

    So, added that near the top after ServerLayout
    now it hangs with flashing cursor though I get different info
    warning this server has a video ABI version of 7.0 that this driver does not officially support.etc. etc. etc.
    Use the -ignorABI option to override this check.
    failed to load module nvidia
    fatal server error
    no screen found
    Can you think of what I've done wrong?
    i'm running latest everything though not 'testing' repo.
    maybe put the 'ServerFlags" near the bottom?

  • Xorg 1.5.3, nvidia twinview won't use samsung monitor

    I've had a dual head setup going for sometime with no issues, but just got a
    new monitor that I can not get working with X. I'm currently using nvida
    drivers version 180.22
    I have a laptop docked with the laptop screen and a second monitor as my dual head config, it's been great, but something isn't working right with this new monitor. The monitor is a samsung SyncMaster 2493hm, and I've read some things about the Samsung monitors sending incorrect edid info so that may be the issue, but I have no idea how to fix that. The behavior is odd because it appears that x server is spanning both screens as if twinview is correctly setup, but the Samsung monitor never comes on.
    I have verified that the monitor works, and works in a dual head configuration both on windows and other linux distro's. My friend has the exact same laptop/monitor setup under ubuntu and it works perfectly for him. Even using HIS xorg.conf didn't work so I am really at a loss.
    any help is greatly appreciated.

  • [SOLVED] XOrg fails to load Nvidia driver on startup

    Hi,
    I'm having a fairly strange issue where XOrg is failing to load my driver when I start up my laptop. I'm using kdm, but this is causing it to fail. However, doing a simple
    $sudo systemctl restart kdm
    works, and everything starts up fine. When kdm is in the failed state, I see this:
    $sudo systemctl status kdm
    ● kdm.service - K Display Manager
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/kdm.service; enabled; vendor preset: disabled)

    And in my XOrg log, I see:

    Hmmmm, that doesn't seem to be the issue. I have a nvidia geforce gtx 670mx. The nvidia website does link me to the 340xx driver for that card, but downgrading to that version still has the same issue. I suspect the issue is in Xorg, since it seems to load the module, but then decides it doesn't have a driver to run for some reason.

  • Xorg using 30% cpu when idle,slow performance and video problems

    I'm having a problem with Xorg, I don't know what it is but I guess it has something to do with configuration problems because in Ubuntu eerything works out of the box.
    My problems are these:
    1. Xorg is using arround 30% cpu when the computer is idle and very simple animations in kde like minimize a window are performed very poorly.
    2. Compiz' performance is very poor and chopy
    3. h264 videos are not wachable. it feels like watching 3fps videos.
    as i mentioned above, i don't have any of these problems with ubuntu.

  • CS4 on XP with NVIDIA 8800GT - terrible performance

    I'm running CS4 on XP (Boot Camp on MAC) with an NVIDIA 8800GT 512mb. Performance is awful - constantly freezing during playback. The problem persists on After Effects as well. Meanwhile, the entire CS3 suite runs like a champ.
    I found Adobe's registry keys that correct an issue with this graphics card and Photoshop CS4 - but it was no help to Premiere or After Effects.
    I'm assuming this is a problem at the driver level but thought it was worth posting to see if anyone had found a solution.
    CS4 works rather well on my PC(only) workstation with an NVIDIA 8800GTS 320mb.
    Any ideas? I really think it's a graphics card issue, but let me know if you think I'm off track. Thanks.

    Thanks for the tool, this will come in handy. I will be sure to post the Core i7 965. Unfortunatly I no longer have the dual Xeon Core i7 computer as it was just for a review. Here's some SpecViewPerf10 benchmarks(2 threads) along with adobe primiere pro render times. Keep in mind the test render was not using the quadro render accelerator presets to make it more of a CPU benchmark. As you can clearly see, the single Core i7 computer greatly outperforms the Xeon computer. The xeon computer also had more ram, faster hard drives, expensive intel motherboard, all the most expensive things you could possibly put in a PC. The Core i7 computer was made with cheaper components. I tried multiple SpecViewPerf10 benchmarks with 1-8 threads and nomatter what the Core i7 965 would beat it. Took out one of the Xeon W5580 cores, same benchmarks. Disabled hyperthreading on the W5580, same benchmarks. The Xeon W5580 is still fast, it's just if you are paying $2k per processor you would expect that a single $1k processor would not be better.
    Also if you goto http://ppbm4.com/Benchmark.html. You can see your Core i7 920 beat out the Dual Xeon W5580 and W5590.
    I was not entirely sure whether you meant the XEON or the Quadro CX in your benchmark tests. Unfortunatly your test tool will not show the power of the Quadro CX. I am sure you are aware, to utilize the Quadro CX you have to use special presets from a plugin. If I used these in the test it wouldn't be a good comparsion tool. I will however give the test a shot and send my results. I see your computer is top currently
    In respect to the person previously. It is completly possible for a person who doesn't edit much to use Premiere Pro CS4 on Windows XP and not have a problem. It is also possible for a person to use Windows 95 and not have it crash. Does that make it a stable program still? Consider yourself one of the lucky ones. In a work environment where Premiere Pro is used on a daily basis it is considered unacceptable to have to redo a project once a week due to a bug. Windows 7 has less conflicts with Premiere Pro and therefore you should not use Windows XP. I had to put Windows 7 on all the video editors computers because they refused to use CS4 on Windows XP as it crashed too much.

  • Laptop + nvidia twinview = maximum performance level

    I'm using 285.05.09 drivers. Whenever I connect my second monitor to my laptop nvidia PowerMizer scales the performance to maximum, which makes the laptop noisy, although I don't need it.
    Has anyone else encountered this bug ?

    Not a bug. Driving two displays requires higher bandwidth, and that can only be achieved by upping the performance level.
