Yosemite Mail - Allow Insecure Authentication

First issue I thought was resolved in OS X Yosemite, that was after my first boot when loading Mail, my IMAP mailboxes showed an 'error' exclamation mark. After some brief searching, I found that allowing insecure authentication (Under Mail Preferences) resolved it.
However the setting is NOT retained upon a relaunch of Mail. Whilst the app is running the settings are retained, but as soon as you quit and reload you have to set it again.
Tedious.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I have the same problem.
Late 2012 imac 27", intel i7 core
When I upgraded to Yosemite, suddenly my email account (netvigator POP) gives an error:
Mail cannot send your password securely to the server. You can remove this restriction in the Accounts preferences by setting “Allow insecure authentication”, which could put your password at risk.
I have shut down & restarted mail, but no success. If I select Allow insecure authentication, it works, but that's not a long term fix.
I also have a hotmail POP account enabled, and that is working fine.
What's happening Apple??

  • 'Allow insecure authentication' selection not saving in mac mail

I have just installed OS X Yosemite
Several of my IMAP email accounts in mail would not connect unless I select 'allow insecure authentication'.
Having made the selection, and saved, the setting reverts to unchecked.
How can I ensure that the selection remains saved?

I also have unsecure IMAP accounts (I have four email addresses) and when I upgraded I saw the Allow insecure authentication so checked it and then found it reverted so I checked it again and also unchecked the 'Automatically detect and maintain account settings'.
I then had a problem where the SMTP server keep dropping its connection and the only way to get it back was to delete the SMTP definition and recreate it.
After spending several hours trying to get it working and talking to the email hosting support (FASTHOSTS in the UK) I gave up and restored to Maverick.
Anybody out there using Fasthosts, multiple email accounts and has this working? Or even not using FASTHOSTS and has this working.
Anybody upgraded with multiple email addresses (same domain) and using SSL got this working?
Not sure if I should talk to Apple support but that costs £35 and I needed to move on so restore was faster.
thanks in advance for any help out there

  • "Allow insecure authentication" not working on mac mail after upgrade to Yosimite

I recently upgraded to the new Yosemite OS.  Since then, I have not been able to access my ISP's IMAP server. After spending time troubleshooting with the service provider, it seems that the "allow insecure authentication" feature is not working.  The password appears to be sent as a series of "*" which the server can not recognize and I fail the login. It is of note that I am still able to access this email account through my iPhone 4S with all the same settings and had no issues before the Yosimite upgrade. Is there anyway around this issue?

I had the same problem. Rebooting the computer fixed the issue for me.

  • "Allow Insecure Authentication" checkbox vanished from SMTP preferences

    Good morning,
The "Allow Insecure Authentication" checkbox is not available on SMTP preferences on my sister's MacBook Pro running the latest version of Yosemite. I've found similar problem on a couple of Mac minis I have at the office. However, my MacBook Pro and my wife's MacBook Air both have the option available.
All of the aforementioned Macs are running the latest version of Yosemite.
Any ideas on how to enable this?
Thanks a lot for any help.

  • Allow Insecure Authentication for SMTP will not stay selected

We have email at a service that requires this setting to be selected, but it constantly gets deselected and will not stick. OS X 10.10.2.

  • Mac Mail is continuously adjusting the "allow insecure authorization" option on it's own

I've already lost 3 clients due to a lack of timely email response, and I had no idea why Mac Mail was having issues connecting to my email server. I've spoken at length with my web hosting support, and it turns out the options in Mac Mail for "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" and "Allow insecure authentication" are new with Yosemite, in both the incoming and outgoing settings (see below).
Well it turns out the only way for me to be able to even use Mac Mail and have it connect to my email server, I have to have "Automatically..." unchecked, and "Allow insecure..." checked in each and every one of the accounts. I completely hate the idea of having to have anything "insecure" associated with my email, but it's the ONLY way I can get it to function properly, and I don't have the time to integrate everything to another email program at the moment. Not only is this a huge security risk in general, but the program will continuously uncheck the "Allow insecure authentication" option entirely ON IT'S OWN about every 20-30 minutes or so, completely jam up all communication I'm working on, require me to go back through and repeat the same tedious process for each and every one of the accounts, and then ALSO have to totally shut the program down and reopen it for the settings to take effect. In fact, the second of the two images seen above JUST unchecked the "Allow insecure authentication" box between the time it took me to start this post and take the screen shot!!
Something HAS TO BE FIXED with this or it could be a huge issue in a lot of ways. I'm planning on dropping the whole program altogether just as soon as I have the time to properly migrate all of my email setup to another program (which I'm looking forward to less than I would a root canal), but for now I'm just hoping and praying I make it that far without either a major security breach or losing any more clientele. As is, I've lost three clients in just the last week from not being able to correspond on tight deadlines.
Downgrade, in all meanings of the term...

Since you are doing a workaround, try deselecting use SSL.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Yosemite Mail 10.10.2 - SSL port, Certificate not trusted, email can't be seen

    Hi All,
Thanks in advance for your help.
I have just upgraded  (quite regrettably) to Yosemite 10.10.2 with a clean install (Time machine... that's a whole new bag of tricks hasn't worked can't even reinstall mail via TimeMachine RESTORE.. very helpful apple)
Mail – The simplest of software, is causing no end of problems:
    PROBLEMS:
    1) When mail opens, it kept saying "Certificate for this server is invalid"
    2) The 2 email accounts I have, keep going offline? NEVER had this on any of the macs i've had set up before ran 10.6.8 for ages not a blip?
    3) And another glorious trick, even if the email accounts aren't showing any exclamation marks (about being off line)
I select any mail box AND out of nowhere, no emails show in the mail boxes, where only 10 seconds ago they were all there?
    4) REPLY ALL just a few moments ago DIDN'T work or reply to all
NOW, it either replies to ALL including me (the original sender) OR it'll place the original sender email address in TO and all others in CC? when all emails were in the TO field?
Just to be clear: I have set up 2 email accounts as IMAP on the mac (Say email X and email Y), and have tested by sending an email FROM email X TO email Y and a hotmail account, just to have more than 1 email address in the to field to see what happens with the REPLY ALL. It doesn't work suffice to say
SOLUTIONS TRIED BUT NOT WORKED SO FAR
I have scoured the forums and tried a few suggested things
    1) I have 2 email accounts, both of which I'm setting up as IMPA,  my ISP Tech support for email host has said "Set the SSL port to 587"
    – Tried doing that in 2 places
    a) Mail > Accounts > (select email account) > Advanced  There under PORT stated 587
    b)  Mail > Preferences > Accounts (select account) > Advanced > PORT And here it is NOT the stated 587, it's (currently) 143?
(I've tried changing this to 587) and this doesn't solve the problem(s)
    2) I tried UNTICKING "automatically detect and maintain account settings". but this didn't solve anything, and the whole certificate error and Mail going offline started up pretty much instantly
    3) Tried ticking the "Allow Insecure authentication" - Again, no solution?
    4) I did have my gmail account set up, but took that out of the equation as that wasn't helping, and with that I couldn't hit REPLY ALL and it show up in the TO field????
I appreciate this is a lot of information on the screen, but i've tried to be as through as I can, and seriously I CANNOT believe Apple have managed to mess up a corner stone app that should Just work?
Thanks agin for any help or pointers.
    Mypetshadow

    CAVEAT:
1)I'm not technically qualified, but thought i should share the info I have found that works for me after having a tech guy from the ISP sort out the settings to get my main running:
    2) This has been working for all of 2 hours... lets hope it stays that way.
    3) My emails are set up as IMAP accounts.
    So....
After speaking / emailing with my ISP and after 4 days of what seems like ****... (Seriously, thanks Apple "it just works.... like a hole in the head") I have a few solutions that are working for me and thought I would post them up for people who maybe having the same difficulty...
    SSL PORTS AND CERTIFICATES ISSUE
    1) Once you "CREATE' an email account, you have to adjust the settings manually (No surprise there)
    • There are some people saying you have to UNTICK the "Automatically detect and maintain my account settings"
    • (I'm NOT a techie kinda guy), BUT in my case I LEFT THIS CHECKED (on advise from the ISP tech guy), and for me it is working. The tech guy from my ISP said something on the lines of  "If the PORT is 993 then SSL has to be checked, If it's port 143 the SSL IS UNCHECKED"
Again, i'm not a techie, but this may be of relevance to you.
Screen grab of the main IMAP settings page
    2) EDITING the SMTP settings
    • MAIL > PREFERENCES > ACCOUNTS > select your newly created account > ACCOUNT INFORMATION TAB
    – From the OUTGOING MAIN SERVER Dropdown list, Select EDIT SMTP SERVER LIST and change your port to 465 (note: Originally port was 587... read below)
Here, SSL WAS CHECKED, as was "Automatically detect and maintain account settings".
REPLY ALL MOVES EMAILS INTO THE CC FIELD
    • Originally the port was set at 587 BUT I noticed a glitch; when I hit reply all, this would put all email addresses that were in the TO field into the CC field? (excluding the original sender...) Not helpful.
    • I noticed  (in an earlier mess up and moving around of ports etc) that when the port was changed to 465 (another port that the ISP tech guys said was an option) my email started behaving as expected... emails in the TO field stay in the TO field, as expected. and not placed in the CC field
Screen grab of the SMTP edit page:
Right, that's my non-techie tuppence and hope that it is of some help, and if not specifically all you need, it might give a few clues.
    Cheers

The problem arized after upgrading free to Yosemite after pop up prompt request.
Mail configuration for one account POP went on permanent error, am unable to fix it.
Then I erased the account, lost all previous emails, and started from scratch, with no luck.
Retrived all past emails from time machine
On incoming mail server click on advanced Have tried to untick SSL (as instructed by my email incoming provider)  port 110 then click save but does not save the save.
    It will return on SSL.
Or, it will save temporarily, then go back to SSL with tick.
    Authentication is on password
    Allow insecure authentication it ticked.

  • Yosemite Mail mail not saving preferences

    OS X 10.10, Mail 8.0
I have several mail accounts set up, a mix of POP and IMAP
One IMAP account does not use secure authentication.
If I set the preferences for the account under the Advanced tab, and tick 'Allow insecure authentication', then save preferences, I can send mail to the account.
However if I return to Mail after 5 minutes or so the preference has changed back to disallow insecure authentication, and that mail account no loner works. I get a message:
"Mail cannot send your password securely to the server. You can remove this restriction in the Accounts preferences by setting “Allow insecure authentication”, which could put your password at risk."
I have a POP account for a different email address with the same provider, and the preference to allow insecure authentication is saved.
I have tried deleting the account and setting it ip again, but the IMAP presence to use insecure authentication is still not saved.

I have this issue as well.  This includes the inability of font preferences to stick, and the toolbar changes to be retained.

  • Images with embedded hyperlinks do not function in Yosemite Mail

    I'm running Yosemite 10.10.2 on a 2012 iMac.
I send out a newsletter with images and hyperlinks embedded in those images. You click on an image, and your browser takes to to a specified web location.
In Yosemite, Mail allows you to embed hyperlinks in an image... just highlight the image, press Command K and enter the link.
The link even shows up when you hover the mouse over the image, but...
No users of Yosemite that receive my newsletter can click on an image and activate the hyperlink.
This worked fine in other versions of OS X.
Any help here would be appreciated.
I'm at a loss to understand why one of the most important and basic programs in Apples OS X, has such a glaring flaw.
    Thanks
    John C

There is an issue with Cmd-K in Mail when used with certain URI, which may explain why some have not encountered a problem.
If the link you are pasting contains characters that need to be "escaped" (such as the hash, #), Cmd-K strips the escaped characters, and replaces them with the naked character.
    Cmd-K converts
    this 'escaped' link:  http://foo.com/Pages/Report.aspx?ItemPath=%2fMapping+Audit+%232
into:  http://foo.com/Pages/Report.aspx?ItemPath=/Mapping+Audit+#2. Because # is a reserved character in the attributes, and is no longer escaped, the link will fail.
Directly pasting the escaped link into Mail, without using Cmd-K, will work fine. But that won't help if you want to add a link to an image or other text.
Best to change the the name of the linked item, if possible, so it does not use a reserved character.

    Hi
It shows just 4 always as an option in the "open with" lsit. Also I haven't downloaded any apps for a while so why would it start now?
Do you know how I can estabilsh how many apps are counting toward this 10 and what they are?

  • Yosemite mail and authentication exchange 2007

When the users started upgrading to Yosemite mail on ther Mac:s I have been seeing a lot of failed logins against Exchange. Several hundredthousands per hour.
I can see for example that the mac tries to access autodiscover/autodiscover.xml and gets a 401.
I found this post but it looks like it doesnt help for all the macs:
    http://meandmymac.net/2014/10/trouble-with-yosemite-mail/
    The client should authenticate with:
    domain\username
    but sometimes i get  domain\emailaddress or cas-servername\username and they get a 401.
    I have a exchange 2007 fully updated.
Anyone else who have seen this problem?

    Hi,
Generally, the client side app decide how to connect to the Exchange Services. For example, Outlook has its own way (1. SCP from AD
    2. DNS lookup 3. Localxml 4. SRV record)

  • Yosemite Mail not showing recipients properly

Another problem has shown itself in Yosemite Mail - I just replied to an email that involved the reply going to a list of people.
But in the compose window, I can see only the first recipient in the Cc: window, and the cut-off tops of a second line of recipients only. There is no way to scroll down, and no way of enlarging that Cc: window. I'm only seeing one recipient in the Cc:, but can see that there are others even though I can't see them.
Anyone else seeing the same thing? I'm on an iMac, but the same thing happens on my MacBook Pro.
And I STILL can't find a list of contacts and their email addresses that will allow me to multi-select (Cmd-click) and then pop them into one of the address windows, like the old Address Panel used to do. The Panel that is now missing. Clicking the blue plus sign at the far right does NOT let you multi-select.  It's one at a time - a real PITA.
If this problem of not showing at least two lines of addresses properly in the address windows on a new email is not just me, then that's another issue that needs to be submitted to
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

    Thanks for the rapid response
No extensions (I used to use Mail Tags, but it's long gone) - plain vanilla Mail.app
The primary recipient (in the To: field) showed OK, but in the Cc: field, I could just see the first recipient, and then there was obviously a second line of addresses - I could see the cut-off tops only - and I couldn't see the usual "...and 3 more" thing - it would have been at the end of that second line that I couldn't see.
Just to clarify - the problem does NOT seem to be when I initiate a new email. It was when I was replying to an email, and I clicked on "Reply All".
Also, somewhat disconcertingly, while Mail will find my Exchange contacts when I initiate an email, I tried to add an extra recipient to my Reply All email - and it wouldn't find that address and wouldn't let me add it from the blue plus sign. I couldn't add it to the Cc: field - I couldn't see the end of that field as described above. So I tried to add it to the To: field. No go...!
Something in the land of Yosemite Mail.app seems to be right royally screwed. Loads of problems by many people across this and several other forums. Amazing how it got through beta testing...!
