10.2.0.4 patchset is out

F.Y.I

HI Steffen
Yes there are a lot of bugs resolved in the latest patch. The one I found most useful was the case where upgrade table option failed with error "RTC-5270 Invalid Upgrade Plan"
This has been fixed now. There are a host of other bugs too which have supposedly been fixed

  • Universal Record Management & UCM Adapter incompatibility?

    Hi,
One of our partners (AL Indigo in South Africa) has hit an issue when they're working with both the UCM adapter and URM as below. I would be interested if anyone has any further ideas on this error. There is a patchset due out for the UCM adapter and we'd like to know if there's a planned fix scheduled.
'We were installing URM on top of UCM 10.1.4.0 and it generated the following error on restarting the UCM server.

In working this backward, we found that URM appears to be mutually exclusive with the UCM VCR SPI adapter and will ONLY install on top of 10.1.3.3.3. Can you find out for me whether there's an upcoming patch which will also address this issue?'
    Many Thanks
    Rich

    Rich,
The issue you are reporting is a UCM software incompatibility issue not a WLP software issue - I would suggest you open a Service Request via support against the UCM product line.
Nothing in the upcoming WLP patches in June/July would address this issue - since it is a UCM issue.

    1) From the ORACLE prospective will there be any bottlenecks.
    2) Are they any proactive measures i need to take.If so can you provide me link to a doc which might be helpful
    Any comments are appreciated.

Both Windows 2003 Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition are certified platforms for Oracle 10g Rel. 2.
I can see you are currently working with patchset 10.2.0.2.0. You didn't mention if you are planning to upgrade to 10.2.0.3.0 but if you are willing to do so, there are several issues reported by the oracle community, I have included verbatim transcripts from the referred sites, just to name a few:
    http://www.pythian.com/blogs/356/oracle-10203-patchset-known-issues-and-bugs
Other platforms to watch out with 10.2.0.3 patchset are Windows and Linux 32 bit - Metalink Note 403616.1 “Many Child Cursors create in 10.2.0.3 on Windows and Linux”. This will likely affect applications with heavy usage of bind variables (perhaps, ones with cursor_sharing=force/similar as well) and busy OLTP is a good candidate. See for yourself the note I mentioned above - it describes some symptoms and consequences (latch contention, ORA-4031, ORA-600) pretty well. The good news is that Linux platform has one-off patch available already - patch 5705795.

    Oracle 10.2.0.3 patchset is out
    December 5th, 2006 - by Marc Fielding
My colleague Vamsi Chikkam noticed that the Oracle 10.2.0.3 patchset has been released for Linux and Windows 32-bit. The major bugfixes are the same as my original post with a few additions:
    * Identical SQL run in different schemas may modify the wrong schema’s tables (bug 5458753)… we have run into this problem at a client site and it’s not pretty. Workarounds include qualifying schema names in SQL and one-off patches for 10.2.0.2. MetaLink note 329673.1 has more details.
    * When cursors are being reloaded frequently in the shared pool, PLS-306/ORA-1722/ORA-1858 errors can occur (bug 4752541)
    * Under Windows platforms, triggers referencing :NEW/:OLD using NCHAR/NVARCHAR character sets can error out (bug 5388136)
    * The same issue as bug 5388136 above also causes compilation errors on 10.2.0.2 databases upgraded from previous releases under Windows(bug 5383828)

Please read through this message in its entirety to determine if you have the issue and be sure to perform all recommended steps before contacting support. This information should be maintained for your reference as necessary.
Due to 2007 U.S. and Canadian changes to Daylight Saving Time, you may have stored timestamp data in your Oracle database which was not previously within Daylight Saving Time, but is now included (e.g., timestamp data with dates falling between March 11, 2007 and April 1, 2007). Such data must be corrected BEFORE installing a Patch Set into your Oracle Database. The instructions to detect and correct affected data prior to installing Patch Set are documented in MetaLink (for more information, see MetaLink [1]Note ID # 359145.1).

As we can see they really use windows and solaris!

  • Out-of-place upgrade to 11.2.0.4 (from 11.2.0.3); how does it affect certain items?

    Hi All,
I've never done a db patch set update, and from what I've read today, I will need to do a full installation of 11.2.0.4 to have this patch set applied.
This sounds scary and being a rookie Oracle DBA, what does this mean to my existing Oracle Database installation (Oracle 11GR2 on Windows Server 2008R2)?
If I do an out-of-place upgrade (Oracle recommended), and create a new home, what will happen to the existing schemas/etc?
My application is configured to connect to SERVERA, SID=123 so when I install a new home, etc, does this change anything? I've read I need to modify the tnsnames files in my new home to be similar to my current tnsnames file..
Basically, I want to upgrade to patchset 11.2.0.4 b/c it's supposed to address a bug I have, but I want to be able to keep the 'settings' the same for the end users/applications (SERVERA, SID=123).
    Thanks in advance

You have to remember that the database software/binaries are separate from the database itself.  Typically, you first install the software (like you did for 11.2.0.3) and then create a database. Best practice states that the location of the database files should be outside/different then the location of the binaries.
When you install your new 11.2.0.4 in a new location, that is all that you are doing - the install does not affect the existing database. Once the 11.2.0.4 software is installed, you can upgrade the database by following the steps in the upgrade guide (the database files stay where they are, but the database gets upgraded from 11.2.0.3 to 11.2.0.4) and when the upgrade is completed successfully, the old (11.2.0.3) binaries can be de-installed at leisure.

Can anyone help me figure out why the domU is just hanging/blocked?It's not hanging (blocked just means it doesn't need the CPU) -- it's just switched into a graphic mode that the console view can't display. You can either VNC into the guest, or change the kernel boot parameters by removing rhgb quiet and replacing them with console=xvc0 -- this should allow you to see the full boot process and answer the first-boot interview questions without using VNC.
You can get the VNC details by running: virsh dumpxml <domain ID> and you can get the domain ID from the xm list output.

  • Ideas for a new kernel patchset

    Hi,
I'm not much satisfied with the kernel patchsets currently available for Arch, so I'm planning a new patchset (well... it was ready when it was 2.6.20.7 based, but now I'm making a new 2.6.21 based one).
These would be the planned patches:
genpatches ( http://dev.gentoo.org/~dsd/genpatches/ ) [not all when they were for 2.6.20... we'll see for 2.6.21]
    AppArmor ( www.novell.com/linux/security/apparmor/ )
PaX ( http://grsecurity.net/ ) [not the whole grsecurity patchset]
cfs-scheduler ( http://people.redhat.com/mingo/cfs-scheduler/ ) [a new scheduler from Ingo Molnar... better than the -ck one? Probably yes.]
    Suspend 2 ( http://www.suspend2.net/ )
    SKAS ( http://www.user-mode-linux.org/~blaisorblade/ )
    Squashfs ( http://squashfs.sourceforge.net/ )
    Unionfs ( http://www.am-utils.org/project-unionfs.html )
    Reiser4 ( http://www.namesys.com/ )
    ACPI DSDT ( http://gaugusch.at/kernel.shtml )
There are some small fixes (genpatches), some "hardening" patches (AppArmor, PaX, SKAS), a new scheduler (cfs-scheduler), improved filesystems support (Squashfs, Unionsfs, Reiser4) and the usual useful things (Suspend 2, ACPI DSDT).
Do you have any other idea? Let me know.

Suspend2 seems like a kernel-space only approach. Splashy is an user-space only approach. So no controversial userspace<->kernelspace interfaces using Suspend2 and Splashy (I think... tell me if I'm wrong).
    splashy is totally userspace.
suspend2 has an option to support userspace progress interfaces, such as userui, fbsplash and others. but the logic and function of suspend2 does not depend on this, it's entirely in the kernel.
fbsplash is userspace* and can give progress and everything from userspace, however it cannot set the terminal backgrounds unless it is patched -- none of the userspace splash tools set the background.
regardless, before you get carried away, you might want to work out why you're making this patchset. and for each patch, why are you including it, do people really need these, or are you just beefing it up to try and make one size fit all? This doesn't always work as well as you'd think, and makes testing damn near impossible.
Work these things out, or you'll probably end up like the other long gone patchsets, nitro, dark, emission, love, ragnarok, klight, light, kamikaze, no, kot, morph, rad, skunk, cko or hammer. And there's more...

  • R12.1.1 / 11.1.0.7 upgrade : Error with 10.1.3.4 patchset upgrade

    All,
We are on 12.0.2 / 10.2.0.2 (non-rac) in a split-tier architecture. Web/Forms on the Linux node and Concurrent Managers/Database on the Solaris node. We are now on a project to upgrade this environment to 12.1.1 on 11.1.0.7 db. (Non RAC,Non ASM)
Here are the high level tasks that i laid down
-- Create a project instance (clone from Prod)
    -- Upgrade db to 10.2.0.4 from 10.2.0.2
-- Upgrade the techstack Oracle Homes (10.1.2 and 10.1.3)
-- Upgrade the JDK to 1.6.0_X
    -- Upgrade 12.0.2 to R12.1.1
-- Upgrade the database to 11.1.0.7
PS: Direct ugprade from 10.2.0.2 to 11.1.0.7 needs us to be on R12 RUP4. So, i decided to do 10g upgrade as an intermediate step. We are following 752619.1 and all the notes that it refers.
We are hitting an issue upgrading the 10.1.3 Oracle home on the Solaris node. The same upgrade completed fine on the Linux node. Here is the description of the issue.
The runInstaller for 10.1.3.4 patchset expects OPMN to be running for a successful patchset installation. On a node with just batch processing enabled, OPMN does not run by default. The installer tries to start OPMN and errors out saying

Any help on the above issue? We are never going to use OPMN on this node but stuck here currently !!
Deviating a little bit, if we have to consider moving the concurrent managers out of database node to the
web/forms node (just to avoid having to maintain 2 appl_tops and getting away with doing the above tasks 2 times)
, what are the various things to consider?
    -- Network latency
-- R12 being Unified APPL_TOP, can we just try to bring up ICM on Web/Forms node? (just enable the service)
-- We are aware that we might have to move the custom top and test custom programs (especially host programs).
Is there any other considerations when moving Concurrent managers from a Solaris node(64 bit) to Linux node (32 bit) ?
One last question: Why are these adoacore/adoafm scripts taking a long time?
    Any feedback is highly appreciated.
    Thanks,

In BPEL 10.1.2.0 this isn't a problem. I tested it against a 10.2.0.1 and a 10.2.0.2 database and in both situations I get the error with BPEL 10.1.3.1 and no error with BPEL 10.1.2.0
it appears to be a problem in the database adapter...
anyone with the same problems and/or a solution?

Not of any use to you, but we had exactly the same problem on Friday when we applied AS 10.1.2.2 Patchset on top of BPEL 10.1.2.0.2.
The clob in our pl/sql proc wan't declared as in/out but for some reasons JDeveloper had created a clob on the Output Parameter type in the db partner link xsd. I removed this and it worked. This code had been untouched , and working fine, for months.
I'll be raising an SR today.

  • Sorting out ASM PSU application

    Oracle db 11.2.0.1.0 SE-One
    Oracle ASM 11.2.0.2.0
    Oracle Linux 5.6 64-bit
    Single instance db. No RAC.
The system I have inherited (which is my first ASM system) is configured as above. I would like to upgrade everythinig to 11.2.0.3.
It appears that there is one single 112.0.3.0 PSU, which includes both database and grid infrastructure. Looking at the installation guides that come with it, the db installation guide (E24321-06) has a section on ASM and GI. There is also a seperate installation guide (E22489-03) for the GI. The second is bulked up with a lot of stuff pertaining to RAC, which I don't care about, but it is sometimes hard to seperate the two. Both guides talk a spend a lot of time on things that would apply to an initial install and getting asm configured in the first place. I'm having a hard time parsing out what needs to be done just to upgrade an existing asm instance to a new PSU.
    Note that I don't have RAC, I'm only upgrading from 11.2.0.2 to 11.2.0.3 -- not a major upgrade like 10.x to 11.x
I certainly don't mind re-reading the docs yet again, but I fear I'm getting to where I can't see the forest for the trees.
    Any pointers would be appreciated.

It's all there. Check the following link:

OK, I think I'm closing in on it. I really like the out-of-place patch, but the docs are really leaving something to be desired. Maybe in my old age my brain isn't as sharp as it once was, or maybe I'm just less tolerant of docs that send you on a rabbit hunt. And I realize I used the term PSU inappropriately for what I am looking for.
After looking more carefully I realized I had glossed over the details I was looking for becuase they were under section headers that led me to believe I wasn't interested in that particular content - like single sentence saying to use OUI for an ASM upgrade -- under a section on using asmca....
In any event, I built a sandbox under VBox, installed ASM 11.2.0.1 and database 11.2.0.1, had them working, then used the OUI that came with the patchset for ASM. It was actually pretty painless, with the biggest issue being that the rootupgrade.sh script twice appeard to have hung. A couple of steps took 5-10 minutes each but when I was patient, it eventually finished and my asm instance was running under 11.2.0.3.0. Trying to de-install the old 11.2.0.1 home is another adventure!
Thanks for helping me get back on track.

  • Which patchsets to apply before 11.03 - 11i upgrade?

What is the best way to find out which patchsets I need to apply before beginning the upgrade from 11.03 to 11i? We are running Government Financials and we are only on patchset D for most modules including FND. I am fairly new to apps and am getting very frustrated trying to determine how to get this information. It is my understanding that the patchset levels need to match up and you can't go a lot higher on one module without patching the others... additionally we do have several bugs especially in Purchasing.

    Hello
    Few questions:
    1. What RDBMS patchset have you applied on top of 10.2?
    2. You said "it runs out of memory", could you indicate what errors are you running into? Can you paste the complete error message? The section you pasted into the thread was only a part of the capture trace and it does not indicate any error.
    3. How are you verifying that the capture process was keep on mining some particular SCN?
    4. Let me know what value you have set for aq_tm_processes parameter.
    Thanks,
