10.5.6 beware

The Mac, god bless it, is so reliable, so dependable it's very easy to take its stability for granted. So if you use a Mac, or know anyone who does, it would be a good idea to forward this message on to them.
For me downloading and installing Apple's updates has been pretty automatic for years. Always do it. Never a problem. Today my bacon was saved by SuperDuper, the excellent backup mirror program for Macs that does a complete backup of the whole system — not only the data files but the OS itself to an external Firewire drive. A bootable backup.
Yesterday I ran the latest Apple update which raised the OS (Leopard) to 10.5.6 and Safari to 3.2.1 (5525.27.1). First I noticed that iTunes had no content — nothing, nada. At first I assumed it had been that way for a while since I haven't played any music in a while. An hour later I'm using Safari and it crashes. Try to load some stuff and it crashes again. Crash, crash, crash. Also the OS itself was presenting far more spinning beachballs than usual.
Went onto Apple's Safari support forum and found many postings related to Safari 3.2.1 crashing chaotically. I also posted this issue to ehMac.ca, a gem of a support forum (Canadian) since so many high level tech people hang out reading and responding. An hour or two later someone suggested since I was also having problems with iTunes I restore the whole thing from backup. His view, Leopard is getting to be middle aged which is when problems begin to crop up, testing isn't as rigourous.
Wonder of wonders, SuperDuper hadn't yet performed its daily automatic backup. I was able to boot into the Firewire drive and see the system still running 10.5.5. An hour later the drive is completely restored and I'm writing this. Safari is stable again and iTunes has all its music back again with all my ratings. (The collection is huge, 47 days, 71Gb, all legitimate, heavily rated and categorized).
The issues could be specific to this computer, but somehow I doubt it. Too many co-incidences. I'll be waiting for 10.5.7. And making sure I do a backup immediately prior to running an update. Apple is superb but not perfect.
With kind regards,

No offense, but this does not sound like the view of anyone that knows much about software development & testing in general or at Apple in particular. It is the early versions that are most likely to have the most undiscovered bugs, not the revisions that follow. Certainly, updates can introduce new bugs, but in general the more mature the version, the fewer bugs there are.
Major problems after an update ("crash, crash, crash" certainly being among them) usually means there was a preexisting problem specific to the computer that the update revealed. Macs are robust but not impervious to file damage, incompatible or badly written third party additions to the OS, or a number of other misfortunes that can play havoc with an update, even if they show no signs of trouble beforehand. This is because installing updates is a delicate, almost miraculous process of making substantial modifications to the OS, using the OS itself to do so -- while it is running! The process is often compared to modifying an airplane while it is in flight.
Because our Macs are normally so reliable, we don't give this much thought, but if we think in terms of the airplane analogy it should be obvious that even tiny little unnoticed problems can & often do cause crashes or require "heroic" measures to recover before the OS becomes the equivalent of a smoking pile of ruin.
Clones are a good way to guard against many of these disasters, but remember that if there were any problems with the original startup drive, they are almost certain to be preserved on a clone of it. Thus, if this applies to you, you are basically just postponing the enviable need to find & fix the problem ... unless you plan on never updating the OS again.

  • Beware of Verizon Home Fusion Service - DO NOT BUY

    Warning! Warning! Warning!
Do not do business with Verizon
They will do everything possible to steal from you.
They are worse than the government. They are worse than the big banks. They are worse than the airlines.
Hidden fees? Check. Lies from store associates? Check. False advertising? Check.
The degree to which Verizon is able to rob its customers without government intervention or a class-action lawsuit is unbelievable.
If you make the mistake of signing up for a Home Fusion account, here is the agony you will suffer:
    1) Unlike any other form of home internet, you will be locked into a 2-year contract. You will not be told about this. You will not be asked to sign any paperwork. You will just be locked into a contract and then threatened with a $350 fee if you try to cancel your service - even if you're dissatisfied with the quality of the internet connection.
    2) Every month, you will be charged a hidden "$20 access fee" in addition to the fee you pay for your data. So if you think you're going to be paying $90 a month for internet, get ready for a rude surprise that you'll actually be paying $110 per month.
    3) You will also be charged $15 for every GB you go over for your plan. Verizon of course is hoping that you will go over so they can slap you with feesor upgrade you to a more expensive plan.
    4) You will be shown one price and then charged another. If you visit the website for Home Fusion or review the prices shown in marketing materials, you will see that 30GB plans are $120 per month. You will sign up for that plan, then receive your bill and discover that Verizon wants to charge you $185 a month instead. They will never tell you about this discrepancy, they will just start charging you whatever you want. Don't like the abuse? You can always cancel and Verizon will charge you a $350 cancellation fee.
You will be ripped off. You will be disrespected. You will be lied to.
For your own sake, please do not sign up for Verizon Home Fusion and if you can... do not sign up for any Verizon services. I am cancelling all of my plans because of the poor treatment I have received.
I've attached to this post the fake pricing that Verizon shows on their site. This is not the pricing they will actually charge you when you sign up. Buyer beware.

I'm sorry you are going through this.   I hope you let Customer service know the cost is almost double what you were told.
This seems to be a common complaint with this type of service.  I think it's a shock how much internet service we can consume.   Most customers sign up for just a few GB and keep getting hit with big overage charges.
I use Cable internet and have a 300 GB "allowance", but they don't charge for overage.   You would think that too much and we would never come close.  But every month we are just about up to the max.   With cable TV cut to the bone, we use Streaming players a lot and they use a lot of data.
You do have a contract you can view online.   In "My Verizon"  under "My Profile", choose Documents/receipts.
This lists your records and view in PDF provides the details.
I'm guessing they add equipment cost "rental" on every month .   And then the crazy high taxes and FCC fees also.
Do they add "repeaters" inside also that they charge for monthly?

    hello guys,
I would like to ask you if its possible to change BEWAR field in already posted document?
I went to SPRO on change line item but its not possible to add the field BEWAR - transaction type.
there is only ANBWA field but this is not required.
The document is AA - asset posting
thansk in advance for your feedback

    Hi,
Field BEWAR in Asset Accounting controls various system activities when any transaction is posted.. so it is not possible to change this field in a posted document.
Reverse the transaction (AB08) and Repost with the correct transaction type.

  • Beware apple store iPhone replacement program

Beware apple store iPhone replacement program:
We took my daughters broken iphone 4 into an apple store and was told that the damage was not covered under warrany but for only £120 we could get a replacement iphone 4
the problem being when they helped her set  up the replacement Iphone 4 they installed os7 as the opperating system rendering the phone useless as it now runs slow, freezes & cannot use messaging at all etc
we went back to the store hoping they could HELP  &  were told that the iphone should not have these problems & to do a full restore; as it turns out the processing chip cant handle os7 which becomes Very apparent & now the store staff are suggesting that they will upgrade the phone to something newer & give us a £60 discout towards a new phone for something we paid them £120 48hr earlier.
Its not the Apple experience we have all come to love can anyone suggest how we might restore the phone to an earlier opperating system

  • Filed BEWAR in transaction F-51, F-44 is greyed out, not editable

    Hello Gurus,
I would like to ask you one thing. We are using transaction F-51 to post with clearing. When we enter the line with the GL account and amout, automatically the line with vendor is marked for correction. In this company is due to validation as the transaction type BEWAR is missing. When we want to correct the line, we go to further data, then the field is not editable.
So my question is if always this field is greyed out or if this is a matter of customizing, If this is the second option where in customizing  we can find this
thanks a lot in advance for your feedback
    regards
    Hana

    HI,
Unfortunetly you cannot enter in field BSEG-BEWAR manually in transaction F-44.
The field BEWAR is not part of the index tables. Therefore it can't be transferred from the open item to the clearing line.
    above is not posiable.

  • Buyer Beware,What good is buying the protection!!!!!

Took my Sub Woofer in for repair under warranty. This was an act of congress to begin with ( just getting them to realize it was still under warranty). Then I had to drive an hour to the closest BB and all they could do is send it off for repair ( didn't even try to look at it for repair). Then 4 days later I receive a call from the tech saying the  cost to repiar would be more than the cost to replaced and he would notify the store they needed to replace it.  So, I called the store since they didn't call me and ask about it and they said I would have to come in to process the replacement ( Which is another hour drive). Knowing that this particular store would not be able to replace it because the sub woofer was a magnolia store only item and this was not a Magnolia store ( which the closest Magnolia store is a 2 plus hour drive)  I will be making a trip for nothing except the hassel of going through the process of getting a gift card ( which who knows who will decide how much that will be for)  and then having to come home and place an oline order and wait another week or two with out a sub for my home theater. Buyer beware.

    Hi cRobin,
I’m an avid music listener, and I’m pretty particular about the quality audio when listening. I’m very aware of the importance of a subwoofer, as well as how much a good subwoofer can affect your overall audio quality! The fact that you purchased a Magnolia assortment subwoofer leads me to believe you’re also particular about the quality of music you listen to. With that said, I’m very sorry to hear that your subwoofer is having issues to the point where it sounds like it’s going to be replaced. I am however happy to know that you’re covered due to purchasing Geek Squad Protection (GSP).
As hydrogenwv alludes to, you basically have two options here, which it appears you’re aware of. It may not be a bad idea to contact the Best Buy location near you with a Magnolia department and get an idea of what subwoofer you may be able to receive as a replacement. Otherwise, I would suggest returning to your nearest Best Buy to complete the service order and obtain the gift card.
While I’m delighted that we’re replacing your subwoofer, I do apologize as it sounds like it’ll be a slight hassle due to your location in respect to where the Best Buy stores are. I appreciate you bringing your concerns to our attention on the forums! If you have any other questions, please let us know.
    Sincerely,
Brian|Senior Social Media Specialist | Best Buy® Corporate

  • Infinity line checker - buyer beware

Long way from the exchange? Fed up with that slow connection? Thinking of ordering Infinity? I have just gone through over a month's worth of problems trying to get Infinity connected as promised by BT, and want to share my experiences with other rural users.
My exchange - Calder Valley- was one of the first to be upgraded to fibre. In September I had recently contracted to Talk Talk and to be honest wasn't getting good service, so idly checked BT's website and was astounded to find infinity available. I phoned immediately and asked for confirmation that my rural location would be able to get the upgrade. The line was checked and yes, I was told the line registered 39.1Mb download, 15Mb upload. I signed up on the spot. I was given a date for engineer install, but then heard nothing. When the equipment failed to arrive I phoned and was told my order had been cancelled. This was blamed on an internal error, the order had not been properly placed by the BT operative. I re-ordered. The line was rechecked as part of this process, same stats. This time I got all the confirmations you would expect. Great. The order tracker showed a message to say my engineer appointment was no longer required, but when I phoned I was told this was an error, ignore it. I got a text to reconfirm the engineer appointment. Equipment arrived, but having waited in all day the engineer failed to show. No contact, just failed to show. Before the end of the day I phoned, and was told there was a problem moving the line back from Talk Talk. I would have a phone line, but would have to wait for Infinity. I was contacted a couple of days later and told that Infinity could not be provided after all, that I would have to revert to a standard package. I was told the speeds promised earlier were based on a postcode check.
I have problems with the service I've received from BT on many levels.
Given what I know now, I would defy BT to deliver Infinity to anyone with my postcode. Its a rural location.
At no point in the order process was there any qualification or note of caution from BT that they might not be able to deliver the speeds quoted. When I ordered I was told I was told that would be roughly what I would get, subject to the normal variations for traffic etc. This would indeed form BTs side of the contract. Given my location I pressed this point on more than one occasion.
On the basis of the line check I was mis-sold the infinity product not once but twice. I severed my contract with BT's competitors on the back of very dubious information, which was sold as factual.
The individuals I have spoken to at BT have all been decent people, very sorry for my troubles etc. But try to get anyone technical, or anyone senior who can take responsibility and actually sort things out. Impossible.
I typed my details into the line checker again today. Click on 'I've got a BT line' which I now have once again - speed prediction 512k. Click on 'I'm not with BT', speed prediction with Infinity 40Mb. Buyer beware!

Thanks Hamish, I appreciate that this is not one for forum advice as such. When I  first looked at infinity and wondered how BT could claim to deliver 39Mb to my location I found the forum a useful source. I posted to add to that information pool.
Although I doubted that it would be technically possible to deliver Infinity to me I went ahead on the basis of 'What's the worst that can happen?' Well now I know. I am constantly amazed that a behemoth corporation like BT can provide such p**s poor disjointed service and get away with it. They are not alone unfortunately.
I understand that Calder Valley was selected to pilot Infinty rollout into rural areas. Not much cop so far. I hope others have a better experience, good luck to them.

  • MS Office iPAD - Buyer Beware

Buyer beware. I purchased a University 365 subscription, not from Apple (but legally, as I am a student). However, after downloading Office to my iPAD Air, when I attempted to activate Office on my iPAD, I could not use the code because the activation process takes you back to the App Store, and of course, there is no key to be found. And of course, Microsoft Support was useless with an iPAD issue. So, I am the proud owner of  a useless University 365 subscription. Apparently, Apple only supports MS Office subscriptions purchased through their site where they get their 30% cut. What a surprise.

  • BEWARE OF ADOBES NEW COPY PROTECTION SOFTWARE  IT CAN SERIOUSLY HARM YOUR COMPUTER

Beware of Adobes new copy protection software it can seriously harm your computer!
The FlexNet licensing software that is installed on your computer along with CS3 and CS4, and possibly other, products has the capacity to seriously harm your system. It seems that it relies on some sort of insidious rootkit technology, which hides files on your hard drive. The trouble is that it is not robust and, if it gets broken, has the capacity to render your computer unusable by any product that uses this technology unless and until the hard drive is completely reformatted and everything properly reinstalled. Given that we all pay good money to prevent this doomsday scenario occurring in our computers, this should be unacceptable.
In particular, anyone who thinks that they can rely on disk imaging technology as a means of backing up or migrating system drives containing installations of Adobe CS3/4 should think again. Adobes new software and activation technology does not support disk cloning, and the result of using it is likely to render your computer permanently unusable, at least by Adobe products.
I know this because it has happened to me. My computer completely freezes suddenly anytime during or after running CS3. After spending some time investigating the problem, Adobe came up with the following astonishing response:
]"We have gone through all the material and logs once again, and came to the conclusion, the problem was in fact caused by cloning your hard drive. What happened is, that the FlexNet service, the service responsible for the activation and licensing of the product, has been damaged. Cloning our products is not supported by our products, and was therefore not tested either. The problem is, there are leftovers of the last Photoshop. installation's FlexNet files present in your system. To make matters worse, these files are well hidden, to protect our programs from piracy. Therefore, they can't be removed. Since a deactivation and reinstallation were already done to no avail, the only thing that's left to do, is a complete reformatting of your harddrive. We are very sorry to have to tell you this, but it really is the only option left.
    Kind regards,
    Adobe Technical Support"
Needless to say I am hopping mad! The implication that the problem is somehow my fault for daring to clone my hard drives is absurd! Disk imaging is a perfectly legitimate way of backing up and restoring or migrating hard drives and what they seem to be saying is that disk imaging as a backup & restore solution does not work with Adobe and Macromedia products. If this is so, a warning to this effect should be writ large on all of them.
To top it all, Adobes abdication of responsibility shows a blatant disregard for their paying customers. They have rolled out a technology that, by their own admission, has not been fully tested and which has the potential to inflict irrevocable harm on their customers computer systems as a result. (Even Microsoft would not dare to try to get away with such a thing!) They have done this to protect their software from piracy and thus to protect their revenue stream. Fine, but they should do this at their own expense, not at the expense of their loyal paying customers, and, when things do go wrong, they should be willing and able to provide a fix. If Adobe lose these paying customers, the piracy issue becomes irrelevant! (If you ask me, a far more elegant solution to the piracy problem would be to lower the price of the software, which is absurdly over-priced, certainly here in the UK.)
As a loyal customer and user of Photoshop virtually from day one, I do expect better than this. For the first time since I took up digital photography, I am looking for a different photo editing solution. I certainly do not think that any more of my hard earned cash will be heading in Adobes direction, at least until this is sorted out.

It is possible that cloning will work for some, maybe, for example, if done between identical disks. Adobe are saying that they do not guarantee that it will; and sometimes it won't.
However that is beside the point. Microsoft, bless their socks, have gone to great lengths to produce an operating system, which, for all its faults, is robust. If something gets broken, it will, 9 times out of 10 repair itself, and what remains is always fixable, once the problem is identified. It is amazing just how much abuse XP can take and still function.
Now Adobe has come along and done something that negates all of that. They have introduced a technology, that, once broken, cannot be fixed. That goes against the principles that everyone else has been working towards.
At the moment, few people may be affected (maybe more than Adobe care to admit to, and perhaps some who do not yet know that they are) but software users need to be wary of the thin end of the wedge. If all software vendors did similar things and played fast and loose with the basic fabric of the operating and file systems, all computers would soon be reduced to piles of junk.
That is why it is wrong.
Until Microsoft themselves support 3rd party product licensing and activation within the operating system, Adobe should hold off on this.
