16x9 needs to be 4x3

working with footage 720p footage (16x9). it was shot for the ipad which displays 4x3, so when it was shot, they left all sorts of unwanted stuff outside 4x3 "safety." it's been easy enough in compressor to set it to crop for 4x3 and set the output for 1080 x720 as opposed to the original 1280x720. when i play the clips in qt, they look fine however in the player there are sidebars and the inspector says the clip is 1280x720. is there a way what would be the settings to output the clips without the sidebar so it just plays as 4x3. thanks.
here's the info from compressor:
File Extension: mov
Estimated file size: 385.04 MB
Audio Encoder
    16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
Video Encoder
    Format: QT
    Width: 1080
    Height: 720
    Pixel aspect ratio: Square
Crop to: Center crop for 1.333:1
        (L: 180, T: 0, R: 180, B: 0)
    Padding: (L: 160, T: 0, R: 160, B: 0)
    Frame rate: 29.97
    Frame Controls: Automatically selected: Off
    Codec Type: HDV 720p30

The iPad will play 1280x720 (16:9) with black at the top and bottom. There is also a button on the iPad movie player to scale the video to 4:3 aspect ratio.
To crop the video to a 4:3 aspect ratio with Compressor set the size to 960x720 and crop the right 160 and the left to 160, no padding. (Your not upscaleing the video, You don't need Frame Control.)
or, you can do this:
Set the size to 1024x768 and crop the right to 160 and the left to 160, no padding. Since you upscaling the video you need to turn on Frame Control. Set the Resize Filter to better or best. You can if you wish, set the Details Level to 10. (Details Level will increase encoding time.)
The ipad display is 1024x768 4:3

  • Using 16x9 footage in a 4x3 Sequence

I've got a goofy combination of ideas & aspects here...
The finished product is to be 4x3 NTSC DV... but is to be letterboxed onscreen (the client is trying to match the look of some other piece.) While shooting, rather than taping off the monitor to show where the letterboxing would crop the 720x486 image, we switched the camera (Sony DVCPro25) and monitor into 16x9 mode. That way the client could see exactly how the letterboxing would look on an SD monitor as we shot it.
    Now...
I'll be capturing the footage from a DVCPro deck via Firewire. What capture preset should I use in order to have the image retain its 16x9 aspect without having to manually scale it down to look letterboxed in a 4x3 DV NTSC sequence?

You probably mean DVCAM (since DVCPro is Panasonic).

Capture it as DV25 Anamorphic, and when you drop it in your 4:3 sequence, it will auto-size to fit.

  • Open a 16x9 quicktime not in 4x3

I have shot and captured items in 16x9.
wondering since quicktime always open it in 4x3 if there is a way to change that so it shows the right aspect ratio?

    Hi,
Open your movie with QT>QT Main menu>Window>Show movie Properties (apple+J)>Presentation>Conform Aperture>Production or Clean.

  • 16x9 and 4x3 mind blowing weirdness

    I'm stumped.
I have a DVD project containing both 16x9 and 4x3 material. All are in separate tracks, no mixing of the different aspects in the same track. When I click on each track, the info is correct. 4x3 material is flagged as 4x3, it displays full screen in the 4x3 simulation and pillar boxed in the 16x9 simulation. Same with the 16x9 material. It all looks right in DVDSP.
Then I play the disc in both a 16x9 TV and a 4x3 TV. On the 16x9 set, the 16x9 material looks fine, it fills the screen. But the 4x3 material also fills screen and is therefore stretched horizontally, making everyone short and fat.
Of equal bummerness, on the 4x3 TV, the 16x9 material fills the frame , and is therefore stretched vertically, making everyone tall and skinny.
I've set the display mode for 16x9 assets to 16x9 letterbox and 4x3 assets to 4x3.
What the heck am I doing wrong?
    Thanks!

Thanks for your help on this by the way!
    Good experiment. Here's what happened...
I made a disc with just a single 4x3 asset. Into the DVD player, and it still filled the full 16x9 screen... distorted.
So I did the unthinkable... I pulled out my TV manual. There are 4 settings for the screen aspect. "normal" "full" "zoom" and "wide zoom". There's also an "autowide" function. Which is now and always has been , on.
The autowide function seems to work fine when watching TV. I switch to a channel that's 4x3, the screen displays 4x3, and when I click the screen button, it says the setting is "normal". Then I switch to an HD channel, the picture goes wide, and I click the button and it's changed to "full". So it appears the TV is switching properly, based on the input, at least when it comes to TV.
the same doesn't appear to hold true for the DVD player. I have to manually set the screen to "full" and then 16x9 material looks right, then when the 4x3 comes on, I have to set it to "normal" and it looks right.
So, either the "autowide" setting on the TV is not getting information from the DVD player about aspect (in which case is it the DVD player or the disc I made?) or the "autowide" function just simply doesn't work with DVDs and you always have to manually set the screen.
And... I still don't know why my 16x9 "letterbox" assets played vertically stretched, filling the screen on a 4x3 TV.
Does this help you at all? I'm still stumped... but again, thanks for sticking with me!

  • Transfer Ana. 16x9 into 4x3 Letterboxed Sequence?!

I've done this in the past and for the life of me can't remember how!
All I want to do is transfer an Anamorphically shot and edited sequence into a 4x3 Sequence (so then it would be Letterboxed), to be able to export into as a 4x3 320 x 240 QT file.
I keep thinking that dragging the nested 16x9 sequnce into a 4x3 sequnce will work, but it doesn't.
Any help of info is much appreciated!

That's very odd that dragging the 16:9 sequence (into the 4:3 sequence) doesn't letterbox. I used to do this on almost a weekly basis and never had a hiccup.
Anyhow, any luck doing an Insert/Overwrite Sequence Content?
That is, drag the 16:9 sequence from the Browser into the 4:3 sequence as you would normally. But press and hold the Command key, then release the mouse button. You should see your sequence contents (aka the clips 'n stuff) in your 4:3 sequence. And they should be letterboxed.
If the clips aren't letterboxed, you might have some type of sequence corruption. Trying all this with a fresh 4:3 sequence might do the trick.

  • Squish a 4:3 video to 16x9

I have a video somehow it was a 16x9 that got stretched to fill a 4:3 screen, is there anyway i can "squish" it so that it is back to 16x9? maybe in compressor?

If you take an image into final cut that has an aspect ratio of 16X9 while working in 4X3 it will make the image anamorphic so it fits the window. What you need to do is double click on the clip in your timeline. In your motion properties go to distort and that is probably set at 0 and you will need to make that -33.33. That should do the trick. Or during your export you can just change the scale selecting 16/9 as your aspect ratio.
    Cheers,
    Jesse

  • 16x9 SD capture creates giant file

    Hi all:
I'm not new to this but made recent changes that have SD video files clogging my external drive. I'm running FCE 2.0.3, capturing to a 500GB LaCie (with 403GB available) and shooting with a Sony PDR-170 that I just switched to 16x9 after years of 4x3. I use Capture Now and have tried both 4x3 and anamorphic 16x9 settings and have trashed my preferences and started over. Since I last captured in 4x3 I've upgraded the OS.
If I stop capture at two minutes I end up with a QT file around 200MB that plays fine. If I let capture run, at about 10 minutes everything freezes and I have a 400GB file "(filename)-av" filling the LaCie. The file shows a QT thumb, but trying to open it gets the error "This is not a movie file."
So what am I missing (other than the likely choice of operator error)? Any thoughts or ideas appreciated. Replacing the iMac and moving to FCE4 are in the budget for 1Q 2010, but that doesn't help me now.

Then I suspect there's a basic incompatibility between FCE2 and your OS/QT. I know there are issues, but I forget at which points in the FCE/OS upgrade paths they appear. (There are others in this forum who should be able to give you specifics.)
You will likely need to go back to your previous versions of OS/QT.

  • Aspect ratio-wide vs 4x3?

If you have a new camcorder than captures in widescreen 16x9, but offer's the alternative of 4x3, what happens when -- if you capture a short sequence in 16x9, then switch to 4x3 and capture a second sequence -- you import those two sequence into Final Cut?
    Hal

EDIT: Sorry all ... guess I got lost again! the post below refers to FCP not FCE. Apologies if the answer is not valid for FCE.
FCP has no problem with handling footage shot as either 4:3 or 16:9,
You just need to edit in a matching sequence ... or if you need to use both formats in the same timeline, then you just have to decide which you want to be the final format.
if you place a 16:9 clip in a 4:3 sequence then you will get a "letterbox" image in the canvas, with the 16:9 clip sandwiched between two horizontal black bars, one at the top and one at the bottom... conversely, if you place a 4:3 clip in a 16:9 sequence then you will get a "pillarbox" image in the canvas, with the 4:3 clip sandwiched between two vertical black bars, one on the left and one on the right.
you can then use the motion properties of the clip to scale and position the clip according to your needs.

  • Determining best image overlay size to use

    Hi folks
So I'm working with Premiere Pro CS6 doing some video editing for a minister friend of mine. During bits of the video, I've been overlaying quotes and whatnot. I'd like to achieve some consistency by always ensuring these appear in the same screen location. So I thought one easy way to accomplish it would be to determine the pixel size of the sequence. And the properties report back that my sequence is 1440 x 1080. I figured I could just create and manipulate images of that exact size and drop them in for exact placement.
The problem is that when I create an image of that size and drop it into PP, the right monitor shows the image with pillarboxed areas of the video on either side of it. The image certainly appears to be spot on with height, but the width is off and I'm not sure why?
So what's the explanation here? It would certainly seem the sequence properties are in conflict with what the right monitor area in PP is presenting.
    Thanks... Rick

You can specify the PAR of titles as you create them:
Basically, anamorphic HD uses rectangular pixels
in order to squish the 16x9 image into a 4x3 frame.
Premiere 'un-squishes' the pixels back to 16x9.
If your source footage is 1440x1080 (1.333),
you are correct working in a 1440x1080 (1.333) Sequence...
you just need to create matching aspect / par titles.
If you are using another application to create your .png images,
I would be inclined to make them 1920x1080 (1.0).
This will fit your anamorphic Sequence without worrying about PAR.

  • Subtitles are too complex.

I' am making a DVD using all image files from CaptionMax. See post from yesterday:
    stevenl, "Image Subtitles." #1, 10 Apr 2006 4:34 pm
Anyway in just a test of the whole subtitle thing I only imported 1 subtitle track and tried to burn a folder and/or image file and got a message telling me that my one track is too complex. I'm going to need seven more, so if you think it's complex now??? All I did is set my first play to Timeline 1 with the one track set to display. Now, I have another timeline in the project that I set as the end action of the first with its track set to display. Can there be an issue in that the two timelines are different aspects 1 is 16x9 and 2 is 4x3?
I don't think that my problem should be anything related to this thread:
    ivansull, "EncoreDVD 2.0 Subtitles" #10, 21 Mar 2006 10:46 pm
since my subtitles are all index .tif files that are already as small as they're going to get. I've also used these type of files in our Sonic DVD Fusion system many times and never had this kind of issue.
I've read about other Encore issues with subtitles, but most of them seem related to text subtitles, what issues (if any) are there with image files?
    Thanks,
    Steven

    Steven,
The "too complex" error is probably the one mentioned in post #5 of the "EncoreDVD 2.0 Subtitles" thread. This is not an Encore issue, but a limitation set by the DVD-Video specification. It doesn't matter whether the subtitles are imported via a text script or as bitmap images; if any (horizontal) line exceeds 1440 bits it exceeds the spec maximum.

  • Exporting 16:9 720p HD to 4:3 SD?????

So we are shooting footage with an HVX at 720p 16x9. I want to be able to down convert this footage to 720x480 (4x3) SD for broadcast. I have tried to export out of FCP with the quicktime conversion and checking the preserve aspect ratio box with crop selected but the final export still comes out with the full 16x9 squished into the 4x3.
I was able to follow this same process with footage from a Sony EX3 and it worked fine. It cropped off the sides and made me a 4x3 image with no squishing. When I try this with footage from our HVX (DVXpro) it squishes. Is this a problem with the DVCpro footage of am I missing a step somewhere?
I did read that by exporting my HD footage at full res and then bringing that clip into an SD 4x3 timeline and stretching the clip out to fill the screen works, but I want to know if there is a way to achieve this in the initial export without having to re-import and stretch the footage?
    Thanks

    ciscomccarthy wrote:
So it sounds like that is the only way to achieve this. No way to crop the image on the export so its full frame in a 4:3 without squishing huh???
I didn't say that. There's always more than one way to skin a cat (metaphorically). My method is simply the easiest with the most control over the image in case you need to reframe. If all you care about is globally lopping the ends off, you can do that by exporting via Compressor.
In Compressor, you go into the geometry tab of the setting you are compressing with. There is a drop down for "Crop To". Choose the 4x3 1.33:1 setting and it'll take off the correct amount from the right and left to make a 4x3 frame.

  • How to make an anmorphic dvd ?

    hi
i have a project shot on DV pal 4X3 that needs to be delivered to a client on a 16X9 DVD to watch on a wide screen tv.
i am still clueless on how to do it...
the footage is edited and awaits compression...
    my questions:
    1. in order to fill the 16X9 frame with a 4X3 image, do i stretch it or zoom in ? (obviously zoomin in will dmamge the image's quality...)
    2. do i export it (using qt compression mpeg 2) as 4X3 or 16X9 ?
    3. in dvd studio pro 3, i was told to "raise the widescreen flag", so that the dvd player would correct the stretch for the 16X9 screen. is that true ? where can i find the flag ?
    4. what does pre-scan and letterbox has to do with it?
    you help is much appriciated...
    thanx
    nir evron

If it was shot 4;3 DV then it should remain at 4:3 surely. Anything else will either result in stretching, squashing or cropping of the image
IF the movie was in 16:9 then when you palce into a track in SP you need to set it as 16:9 letterbox.
Personally I'd tell the client that the assets are 4:3 and for best qualitry should remain so

  • Anamorphic project... again...

    hi
i have posted a question concerning anamorphic projects some time ago and still havent solved the problem.
    here is a summary:
i have to deliver a project shot on DV pal 3X4 as a 16X9 DVD.
i have edited it down as 5X4 sequence and nested it as advised on a 16X9 anamorphic sequence. the problem is that i have some black borders on the right and left of the frame, inside the frame. do i need to enlarge the frame so the borders will fall outside the frame ? whats the best way to do it? wouldnt zooming in take the quality down ? is there a way to avoid losing quality ?
any help will be much appriciated...
    here are the full details:
    FCP 4.5, DV PAL 5X4 576X720
    thanx
    nir

how do i enlarge it ? is it enough to streach it using the wireframes ? how much do i need to streach it ? what if i wont export it as 16X9 but as normal 4X3 and the client would watch it on a 16X9 monitor ? what would happen then ? would it just be cropped equally from top and bottom ? if thats the case i am not sure the quality loss of enlarging it so much is worth it. the quality loss is so bad, i lose all the extra points of using a large camera...

  • Making DVD's from a HardDrive Camera, (Sony Handycam).

I wanted some feedback on your best way to make a DVD from a Hard Drive Camera. I have the Sony 60 GB HandyCam. It's great. I have many programs to create a DVD and edit them. Some are Quicktime Pro with MPEG 2 converter to 4 then to Streamclip, CaptyDVD, VisualHub, ImageMixer.
I have found that the QuickTime Pro/2 to 4 converter then into iDVD gives me the best results. I want to maintain the 16x9 aspect ratio. When I use iMovie then import to iDVD, it doesn't keep the 16x9. It producers 4x3. I don't want that.
The visual Hub program is great but it gives me the letter box effect. I rather have the true 16x9 formate.
Any other ideas or programs out there YOU like?
    Thanks in advance, Don

Have you considered using Final Cut Express instead of iMovie?
Perhaps you should ask your question in the Final Cut or iMovie discussion area.

Haven't done this for quite a while, but I managed to accomplish what you want to do - that is, if your DVD recorder has a firewire port:
If my memory serves me correctly (and that is questionable ):
Record VHS movie onto DVD (I used +RW at the time)
Set your DVD recorder to use the firewire connection (check your manual and connect firewire cable
Open iMovie and and attach firewire cable to Mac (you should now get a blue screen)
Simultaneously hit play on both the recorder and iMovie (or it might have said "import" - can't remember)
It imported the entire movie into iMovie; at that point, you can edit there or not, and then bring it over to iDVD.
Hope this helps (and my memory is correct about the sequence of steps plus the fact that I did this a long time ago, I believe with iMovie 05?)
