2.1 EA1: 8i Connections

Hi,
Although unsupported, previous releases of SQL Developer are able to connect to 8i databases but the 2.1 EA1 release displays the following message "Unsupported Oracle Database Version".
Is this restriction likely to remain in the stable release?
Is there a work around? I tried setting the ORACLE_HOME to a 10.2.0.4 instant client before starting SQL Dev, but it made no difference.
TIA
Graham

You should be able to use the thick driver from an earlier DB client though, copying the required DLLs to sqldeveloper, maybe checking Preferences - Database - Advanced - Use OCI/Thick driver, and using a Custom JDBC URL in the Advanced Connection Type.
Search the forum for more on all this, since I never tried it myself.
Good luck,
K.

  • 3.0 EA1 - DB Connection in Stored Procedure Windows

I don't know if anybody else has encountered this, or if it was fixed in EA2 (been way too busy to check it out). When I click on a stored procedure in the tree, it doesn't always open for the database connection that I'm selecting it from. Rather, it will use the connection of the last worksheet I had open.
It doesn't affect me too much since my permissions in our Prod server keep me from breaking too many things. I would be lying if I said I hadn't tried to compile/save a procedures without looking to see what link it was opened with.

While we can debate about whether it should be on or off by default, and we've had both in the product over the years, we found that the biggest complaint was when you selected a procedure/package and you could not edit. It seemed that most people wanted to be able to edit from the outset. So we changed the behavior to a single set of tabs and in SQL Developer 2.1 you are in edit mode by default. It was an oversight that it was changed for 3.0 and so for consistency the decision has been made to place you in edit mode by default. For those who find this a little scary, there is a the preference to turn this off.

  • Minor bug with Connections node in SQL Dev. 2.1 EA1

This is minor compared to some of the other issues found with EA1.
When I expand the Connections node by clicking on the "+" I cannot collapse it when clicking on the "-". This happens both when migrating settings from 1.5.5 and when starting clean without migrating settings and then creating new connections. (I deleted the "system2.1.0.62.61" folder between tests.) I tried this by running "+<install_dir>+\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper.exe" and "+<install_dir>+\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.exe" to get a console window. (The only messages I saw in the console window occurred when I opened a connection.)

FWIW, I can collapse and expand the Connections node in 1.5.5 without any problem.

Thanks the bug is that the +/- is even being shown. I put something in there to prevent the collapsing of that since there's nothing when it's collapse.

  • EA1 - bug: copy wizard connection list is out of order

the "select schema" pulldowns on the copy wizard normally list the connections in alphabetical order. If you create new connections, these are not in alphabetical order but instead are at the bottom of the list.

I am sorry about that I have been so heads down testing EA2 that I mixed up my dates and thought it had already pushed to OTN.
I have done a number of changes to the copy wizard and while I can replicate this issues one EA1 I can not on EA2 ( which is due very very soon).

  • EA2 - EA1 - Connection interface is unavailable

    1) Create a connection
The action on File->New->Database connections->NOTHING ( the window is closed without an action).
    2) I had the same problem on EA1 after deleting of an existing connection
    3) I've just reinstalled JVM, JDK and EA2 with the same results.
    4) Several menu are misplaced (for example "source")

    Reinstalled :
    1) Deleted the old sql Developer folder
    2) Deleted all the previous settings folder
    3) New Unzip ot the latest EA2 in a different folder
    Result : it's OK .
This solve the issue in the EA2 new installation, but that was done to get around the same problem I had on EA1 after deleting a connection.
I worked on EA1 for several days without connection problems until I deleted my connection!
But now I've already deleted EA1 and I can't show you anything on the console related to that issue.
Anyway, now I'm on my way again and I'll use your instructions next time I'll have an error like the one I've had in EA1 this morning.
    Thank you.

  • Data Modeler 3 (EA1): Connection issue when connecting to oracle 11R2

    Hi all,
When I try to create a connection object for a oracle 11r2 database I get the following error:
ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1
ORA-22285: non-existent directory or file for FILEEXISTS operation
    ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_LOB", line 725
    ORA-06512: at line 5
    when I test the connection.
    I have checked the oracle 11r2 instance and have 3 directory objects and all are correct;
    SYS ORACLE_OCM_CONFIG_DIR /opt/oracle/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.1/ccr/state
    SYS DATA_PUMP_DIR /opt/oracle/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.1/rdbms/log/
    SYS XMLDIR /opt/oracle/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.1/rdbms/xml
What can cause this problem. I have the same issue with the older version of the data modeler
    Thanks

Hey if you want me too I can create a tar/sr.
It happens even when I log in as sysdba. The three directory objects on the file system are all owned by oracle and oracle can rwx into those.
My user can see XMLDIR but does not have read/write on the directory object all other it does have read write.
    Thanks.

  • EA1 - Migration Source connection

In the Quick Migrate wizard and in the Data move details form, you must create a new connection as Source.
You cannot choose from existing connection because the LOV is empty and you receive back a Java exception.

Did you migrate your connections from 1.2.1? Can you try this for me please? Create a new connection and see if that shows up in the drop list.
Current workaround: Right click on the connection and select the Quick Migrate option from that context menu. There appears to be something in the migrated connections.
I'll log a bug on that, but if you have a slightly different issue, then let me know.

  • 2.1 EA1: Connection Dialog / Properties doesn't show anymore

    Hi all,
i'm using SQL Developer on various machines, all running Windows XP (German) SP 2 or 3, for Java i use the one downloaded with SQL Developer.
Now it happend, that i can't open the Connection Dialog anymore, so i can't configure any new connection.
If i want to check properties of an existing connection this dialog isn't displayed either.
Mouse Cursor changes to sandclock for a very short moment and thats all.
    Any ideas?

    Hi K.
On 2 of my 3 Computers i had a previous version and copied the new files over the old ones, on the third one i never had sql developer before. So this Problem doesn't seem to be connected to a previous installation as it happens on all 3 machines.

  • EA1 - Automatically open connection list at startup?

When SQL Developer 1.2.1 first starts up, the connections list is open. In 1.5, the list is always closed and I have to click to open it. Is this a preference setting somewhere or did the behavior change between the versions? I know it's very minor, but it's annoying nonetheless.
    Thanks,
    Richard

Yes, it is. Hopefully they get to add the ability to categorize connections and address this implicitly...

  • EA1 Connection errors in Diff Wizard not reported.

If you select a connection in the diff wizard which fails for some reason (eg 1017), the error is not reported and the connection drop down selection is reset.

This is also true for the Copy Dialog connection. I have updated the bug.

  • EA1 - Connection tree is compacted, but only with specific connection names

When first started, SQL Developer v2.1.0.62 will consistently "compact" all of my connections over the top of each other... resulting on a garble of indecipherable text that prevents me from selecting the connection I want. I fixed this by adding a new database connection, then restarting.
If I delete the new connection, then everything looks fine until I restart... then it gets compacted again. I'm guessing that I'm hitting some special condition that's related to the names of my connections. If you would like to give me an offline way to get you the list then I'd be happy to send it through, but I'd prefer not to publish all of my details in this open forum.

    Hi K,
I can't seem to replicate the problem any more, but I have put that line into my conf file just in case... and because of the positive success of the other poster, I'll assume that this does in fact fix the problem.
I presume that this line will be added by default in future releases?
    Regards.

If you delete a connector in the relational model, you get an are you sure message. If you select NO, it deletes it anyway.

    Hi,
are you sure it's "are sure" message - probably it's "Delete FK Columns" message - its' about auto generated FK columns - to delete or not them.

  • Front-End Loopback Test on Catalyst 2955 causes connected hardware to "die"

I have recently purchased a Cisco Catalyst model WS-2955C-12 switch. During POST (boot), the console reports that the switch undergoes what is known as a "FRONT-END LOOPBACK TEST". During this test the 14 port lights on the device light up amber for a moment, connectivity is lost, and after a second or two the lights go off and connectivity returns. We've found that the moment the lights go off at the end of this test, if we have a specific device (with a specific ethernet chip) directly connected to the switch the ethernet chip is adversely affected by this test - the device "goes dark" and is not capable of communicating with anything (including other switches, routers, etc...) until it is power-cycled. What exactly does this FRONT-END LOOPBACK TEST do, and what does it send across the wire that could be causing my ethernet chip onboard the device to go bonkers?
    Thanks!
