3D: scale, shear and rotate settings

Hi.  I am relatively new to Illustrator.
I am trying to create a simple 3D map, but not with the default iso settings.  It's actually a remake of a map made many years ago on a squar grid using a rise of 1 and a run of 2 (all done by hand on graph paper).  This creates an angle that is 26.5651°.
For iso, [scale: H=100%, V=86.602%] [shear:  hoizontal axis -30°]  [rotate: -30°] and so on, varying for the left, right and top.  I have this working fine for iso.
My problem arose when I went to the 26.5651 angle.  What settings should I use for the three sides (left, right, top)?
Is there any way to get the extrude and bevel tool to do work with my settings?
Thanks

I am trying to create a simple 3D map, but not with the default iso settings....made many years ago on a squar grid using a rise of 1 and a run of 2...
You are confusing actual orthographic projection from an actual 3D model (3D Effect), with an archaic 2D "cheat" that is really not a correctly proportioned orthographic projection at all.
This creates an angle that is 26.5651°.
Yes, but more significantly it is simply the projected angle that results from vertically scaling a true-length 45° line by an arbitrary 50% (the 1:2 ratio). In orthographic projection, that amount of foreshortening would mean that you are viewing the top plane of your coordinate system as if it is tilted upward toward you 30°[arcsine (.5 )= 30°], not the isometric angle of 35°16".
For iso, [scale: H=100%, V=86.602%] [shear: hoizontal axis -30°] [rotate: -30°]
Contrary to the misconception perpetuated by many of those who use the 1:2 cheat, that is not isometric. It's just an arbitrary 2D oblique. By definition, in isometric (read "same measure") drawing, all three axes are of the same length. Using the 1:2 ratio, the length of your left and right axes (the hypoteneuse of a 1x2 rectangle) measures 2.2361. If your vertical axis measures .86602, then obviously your three axes are not of equal length, and the drawing is not isometric. The corresponding lengths/angles of the axes in axonometric (isometric, dimetric, trimetric) drawing are not arbitrary. For any given set of axis angles, there is but one correct set of forshortened lengths.
So from where are you getting the 86.602% figure? I'll tell you: That's the cosine of 30°. Now, if the 1:2 ratio did, in fact, result in a vertical axis of that measure, then the 1:2 cheat would result in a proper dimetric (not isometric) projection. That is, if the top of a cube is tilted upward from your line of sight by 30°, then the front of that cube is necessarily tilted away from perpendicular to your line of sight by 30°. The top would be foreshortened by a factor of .5, and the front would be foreshortened by a factor of .866.
But that is not the vertical measure that the 1:2 cheat gives you. Xara Designer Pro, for example, has the fake "isometric" 1:2 grid you are talking about built in as a standard feature:
Note that the vertical axis measure of the 1:2 ratio is not .866. It's .7071. (Otherwise, it wouldn't fit the square grid which is the whole point of the 1:2 ratio cheat.)
Inkscale, on the other hand, provides an actual isometric grid feature:
Note that all three axes are of the same length, and are separated by 120°.
Here's a properly proportioned dimetric cube, using your desired 1:2 aspect-ratio 26.57° axis angles (manually drawn in Illustrator, but could be drawn in any of the three programs mentioned):
Note that the vertical axis is .866 (cosine of 30°).
Which of the three boxes above look like a properly proportined cube to you? Note how the first screenshot looks short and squat. It's simply out of proportion. That's because it's not an orthographic projection of a cube. The other two are.
Isometric:
Left and right axes angled 30° from horizontal. (or more correctly, 120° from the vertical axis).
Unit cube is rotated 45° and tilted upward toward you 35°16".
All three axes foreshortened length: .8165
[One instance of] dimetric:
Left and right axes angled your desired 26.57° from horizontal
Unit cube is rotated 45° and tilted upward toward you 30°
Left and right axes foreshortened length: .7906
Vertical axis foreshortened length: .866
1:2 cheat:
Left and right axes angled your desired 26.57° from horizontal
Unit cube is rotated 45° and tilted upward toward you 30°
Left and right axes foreshortened length: .7906
Vertical axis foreshortened length: .71 (incorrect value for orthographic projection)
So the fact is, the 1:2 fake "isometric" cheat yields neither an isometric nor a dimetric drawing. It just yields a distorted 2D oblique. But again, 3D Effect is an actual orthographic projection generated by 3D geometry. Thus my initial comment that you are confusing a mere geometrically incorrect 2D cheat with real orthographic projection. You're trying to apply a set of arbitrary geometric values to a system that is not arbitrary in its geometric calculations.
My problem arose when I went to the 26.5651 angle....Is there any way to get the extrude and bevel tool to do work with my settings?
So can you get 3D Effect to replicate the disproportionate scaling of your 1:2 cheat? Sure. You just have to use settings which cause 3D Effect to make the same proportional error, thereby extruding a square to a squat box, rather than to a cube. (Albeit you will get into other proportional errors when you map artwork to the extruded sides.)
Like everything else in Illustrator, the extrusion depth setting in 3D Effect uses points as its basic unit of measure. So to extrude a 1" square into a cube, you use an extrusion depth of 72 points (1").
Because of the cumbersome way the rotation fields are implemented in the 3D Effect modal dialog, it's much simpler to perform the initial 45° rotation of the base art before applying the effect. That way, you only have to mess with one of the rotation fields (i.e.; numerically specify a simple rotation, rather than a compound rotation).
Now do the same thing again, but just distort the extrusion depth by the same proportion of a correct dimetric vertical axis length to that of the 1:2 cheat:
The routine is not limited to cubes. Draw the top face of any shape(s), rotate 45°, and apply the same 3D Effect settings. This should work for your map, to match things previously drawn using the 1:2 cheat:

  • How to reverse IDML ItemTransform to scale, sheer and rotation

    Hello everyone,
    Now that i know how to rotate in IDML i want to know how to calculate the ItemTransform values back to scale, sheer and rotation.
    For example:
    0.8660254037844387 -0.5000000000000001 1.1102230246251565e-16 1.1547005383792517 0 0
    This example has a 30° rotation and a 30° sheer but how can i calculate this back to the degrees values?
    And i don't understand the scale values if i scale an item ItemTransform does not change but the anchor points change.
    Can anyone help me with this?

  • HT5858 In the control center I can change the mute or the rotation but not both.  How do I fix this.  In settings I can not uncheck both the mute and rotation lock.

    In the control center I can change the mute or the rotation but not both.  In the settings area therefore I can't uncheck the mute and rotation settings at the same time.

    Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
    If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

  • JS CS3 flag duplicate images with scale and rotation differnce

    I've been trying to cut down on the number of images a script I have would produce.  The old script would look for links that are being used multiple times and then just version the link which is fine.  What I am finding this that although a document may have one image linked 9 time 6 times out of the nine the image is scaled and rotated the same amount and the other 3 times the rotation and scaling also match. In this example the image only needs 2 versions the first as the original and the second with the scale and rotation of the image used 3 time let say.
    So to the code:
    The following code will work through the doc and create an array of the links as duplicates:
    function LinkUsage(myLink) {
        var myLinkCounter = 0;
            for (var myCounter =  0; myCounter < myDoc.links.length; myCounter++) {
            if (myLink.filePath == myDoc.links[myCounter].filePath) {
                myLinkCounter++;
        return myLinkCounter
    var myDoc = app.activeDocument;var myNumLinks = [];
    for ( var t = myDoc.links.length-1; t >= 0; t-- ){
        if(LinkUsage(myDoc.links[t])>1){
                myNumLinks.push(myDoc.links[t].id);
    Is there a way to loop through the array and only flag the differnent scale and roatations.  What I should get is that out of the multiple link uasage the image is only changed twice out of the 9 times used.
    I was trying to loop through the array and then loop through it within the loop to compare the link but this does not work for obvious reasons.
    for (var i=0  ; i <myNumLinks.length; i++){
        var valLink = myDoc.links.itemByID( myNumLinks[i]);
            if(valLink.parent.constructor.name == "Image"){
                for (var j=0  ; j<myNumLinks.length; j++){
                    if(myDoc.links.itemByID( myNumLinks[j]).parent.constructor.name == "Image"){
                        if(valLink.parent.parent.images[0].rotationAngle != myDoc.links.itemByID( myNumLinks[j]).parent.parent.images[0].rotationAngle){
                            $.write(myNumLinks[i]+"\n");
    Is what I am trying to do possible and if so any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Cheers, John.

    I think I might be one step closer to getting this to work.  I've been able to just capture the file path of the duplicates using:
    //count the number of times the link is used
    function LinkUsage(myLink) {
        var myLinkCounter = 0;
            for (var myCounter =  0; myCounter < myDoc.links.length; myCounter++) {
            if (myLink.filePath == myDoc.links[myCounter].filePath) {
                myLinkCounter++;
        return myLinkCounter
    //check if the filepath has been added to the array
    function chkVal(val){
        var compCount = 0;
        for(var arr =  0; arr < myNumLinks.length; arr++){
            if(val == myNumLinks[arr] ){
            compCount++;
        if(compCount >=1){
            return false;
            }else{
                return true;
    //check the links inthe doc
    var myDoc = app.activeDocument;
    var myNumLinks = [];
    for ( var t = myDoc.links.length-1; t >= 0; t-- ){
        if(LinkUsage(myDoc.links[t])>1){
            if(myNumLinks == 0){
                myNumLinks.push(myDoc.links[t].filePath);
                }else{
                    if(chkVal(myDoc.links[t].filePath)){
                        myNumLinks.push(myDoc.links[t].filePath);
    for (var i=0  ; i <myNumLinks.length; i++){
        $.write(myNumLinks[i]+"\n");

  • IBooks Author Scale and Rotate in preview

    I just started with iBooks Author. I made a simple book with several chapters and pages. When previewing the book in the iPad the pages zoom and rotate with a two finger gesture. Then snap bak to the default scale and rotation. Imagine trying to pinch to zoom, but having the page scale.
    How can make the pages use the standard zooming behavior with out rotating and hold the zoom without snapping back to the initial scle?

    Sorry about that. I haven't used that software before, but they appeared to fit the bill according to their descriptions.
    There is another program, Image Tricks, that is for Tiger and it will let you rotate images and save the changes.

    I can't find any hacks for Preview that will let you do what you want.

    Did all these things mentioned in this article, even did a system reset including erase data and other settings. iOS is up to date, still the iPad 2 display is not rotating.
    This happened first a couple of weeks before, then I did a reset and it worked. Then after 2-3 days it happened again, I updated the iOS and it worked after that. Next time it happened, I tried all possible methods, including switching to software - rotation lock on/off. The hardware when turns to off/on, shows the correct icon on the screen of the lock and unlocked state. But the rotation is not happening.

    Just check again.
    If you see a lock icon in the upper right corner of the screen - then the screen orientation is locked.
    Try the side switch above the volume rocker first and see if that unlocks the screen. If that doesn't do it, double tap the home button and swipe to the right and look for the lock icon all the way to the left.
    If the screen is unlocked but still will not rotate, reset the iPad.
    Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
    If the iPad screen still will not rotate - turn it over and gently tap it on the back a couple of times - but gently tap it. Make sure that the screen is protected.

  • Scale and rotate a tiff image

    How do you scale and rotate a tiff image without running out of memory?
    I have been trying to scale the image and rotate it before i pass it to the DisplayJAI but i keep running out of memory.
    code i use to rotate the image.
    private Image rotateImage(boolean rotateRight)

    Image rot = null;
    int imageWidth = imageHolder.getInUseImageIcon().getIconWidth();
    int imageHeight = imageHolder.getInUseImageIcon().getIconHeight();
    int buffer[] = new int[imageWidth * imageHeight];
    int rotate[] = new int[imageWidth * imageHeight];
    try

    tracker.addImage (img, 0);
    tracker.waitForAll();
    PixelGrabber grabber = new PixelGrabber(img, 0, 0, imageWidth, imageHeight, buffer, 0, imageWidth);
    try {

    if(rotateRight)
    for(int x = 0; x < imageWidth; x++)

    this is the code i use to scaled the image.
    Image scaled = originalImage.getImage().getScaledInstance(
    (int)(currentWidth * 1.5),
    (int)(currentHeight * 1.5),
    Image.SCALE_FAST);
    I tried this method, it works and does what i want but the scrolling and loading is too slow.
    public void paintComponent(Graphics g)
    Graphics2D g2D = (Graphics2D)g;
    g2D.rotate(Math.PI/2, (int)dimension.getWidth()/2, (int)dimension.getHeight()/2);
    g2D.drawImage(image, 0,0,(int)dimension.getWidth(), (int)dimension.getHeight(), this);
    Help plss.

  • Flash crashing when using Command + Option + S for Scale and Rotate?

    Flash crashing when using Command + Option + S for Scale and Rotate?
    It's happening to me when I use those hotkeys
    Please let me know if it's happening to you too.
    I don't know the cause but I need a fix.
    I'm using Adobe FLASH cs6 for Mac
    My computer:
    Mac mini
    Mid 2011
    Software  OS X 10.8.1 (12B19)
    -Line

    With all due respect to your totally coindescending reply, this is a bug in Flash. Happens every 4-5 times I use that menu item. Been happening for months, but  we just installed a Brand new iMac (1/13). Quadcore 3.4 16G RAM and 1TB Fusion drive. Fresh install of CS6. Not running any other 3rd Party Software. Problem STILL happens in new Flash docs with small, simple vector Graphics.
    So instead of blaming the users computers, how about you guys just fix the effin' problem? Thanks.

  • Why doesn't Photoshop CS5 automatically scale strokes and effects?

    I am looking everywhere for why Photoshop CS5 doesn't automatically scale strokes and effects. I could've sworn there was a preference in CS4 but there's nothing resembling this in CS5. Driving me crazy!
    Whenever I do a Free Transform, the effects are completely out of whack and force me to waste time resetting them individually, layer by layer. I used to be able to grab any object or group of objects, do a transformation and Photoshop automatically recalculated. If anyone has a tip on how to avoid the annoyance of having to go layer by layer and forcibly adjusting that would be great.

    Layer style effect setting are in absolute pixel size values so if you change the scale of a layer the style size remains the same. You can edit the layers style effects after tou do a transform on the layer and change the absolute setting. If the layer has been rastersized or flattened you can not. I have request that Adobe add support for relative settings like inches, cm, mm etc which is relative to the documents dpi resolution. This would be very helpful for recording actions.
    However photoshop can scale existing layer style for you when you use Image Size there is a check box.  If you need to scale a single layer and have its style scaled you need to do it in a round about way. Convert the layer to a smart object. Then instead of using transform double click on the layser smart object icon in the layers palette.  Photoshop will open that layer embedded smart object in Photoshop for you to work on it.. Use Image Size to resize the layer up or down in size and check resample constrain and the scale style check box.  Then use menu File>Save.  Photoshop will then update the embedded smart object in the smart object layer and you can close the document Photoshop opened for you to work on the smart object.

  • BitmapData Resize and rotation

    Hi there,
    I'm having some problems manipulating an image with AS3 and Flash Player 10.
    I've managed to edit a Bitmap from a local image by changing it's size and rotation with the help of class Matrix.
    The problem is that now I want to save the new image to the disk as a PNG file.
    I'm using a PNG as encoder that requires a BitmaData.
    When I passed that Bitmap.bitmapData all of the matrix changes do not get reflected in the bitmapData.
    Here is the code:
    var BMP:Bitmap  = Bitmap (LOADERINFO.content);
          BMP.pixelSnapping = PixelSnapping.ALWAYS;
          BMP.smoothing     = true;
          BMP.bitmapData.lock ();
    var scale:Number = .2;
    var matrix:Matrix = BMP.transform.matrix;
          matrix.rotate(90*(Math.PI/180));
          matrix.scale (scale,scale);
         BMP.transform.matrix = matrix;
    var BMPD:BitmapData = new BitmapData ( BMP.width, BMP.height, true, 0x00000000 );
          BMPD.draw(BMP);
    var BMP2:Bitmap = new Bitmap ( BMPD, PixelSnapping.ALWAYS, true );
    // JUST TO TEST
    addChild (BMP);
    addChild (BMP2);
    Thanks,
    PM

  • Scaling and rotating with motion tween

    This is a ridiculously easy problem but I'm drawing a mental blank at how to do it so in advance I apologize for the simplicity. I'm trying to get a movie clip to rotate and scale automatically without being clicked. I would like it to gradually rotate by 90 degrees and scale by 150%, but I can't figure out how to get a motion tween to do it and am having to do it manually frame by frame. What is the code to do this?
    Thank you!

    If you are using CS4 or newer, make sure you are using the classic tween for what you described you tried. The only wondering I have is you mentioning a clip twice... if you are inside the movieclip you cannot rotate and scale it from there.  So is there a clip inside the clip, and is it the inner clip that you are trying to tween?  The object you scale and rotate must be a library symbol.

  • How to enable sound and rotation on my iPad?

    How to I get sound and rotation on my iPad.  I had it and now I have either sound or rotation.  Please help.

    Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
    Re sound:

  • How do you swap an image in the timeline but keep the in/out points and opacity settings?

    Hi There,
    We have a file which consists of a bunch of still images that get updated each year - the edits never change.
    Is there an edit type that will allow us to swap the images our for new ones but keep the in/lout points and opacity changes? We've looked at all the edit types (overwrite, insert etc) but they don't seem to swap stuff out.
    We had also been naming the new files the same as the old ones and reconnecting the media but this is now causing issues.
    Any help or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.
    Cheers
    Ben

    Click on the new image in the browser, so that it is selected, and the type Command + C to copy it.
    Next, click on the clip in the timeline that you want to replace with the image you just copied (preserving your in and out points and opacity settings) and type Option + V to bring up the Paste Attributes Dialog Box.
    In the Paste Attributes Dialog box, check the box for Contents and leave the remainder of options unchecked.
    Uncheck the Scale Attribute Times option as well.
    Click OK, and the image should now be replaced on the timeline with the in/out and opacity changes preserved.

  • How can I animate size and rotation on mouse over?

    Hello,
    I'm fairly new to Edge Animate and have been trying to find tutorials but all I've found so far are ones for older versions which are very different to the new CC 2014 versions so not had much luck..
    I'd like to animate icons similar to the those on the coloured band on this site: http://do.live147.com/html/rockox/index.html  ("Website", Latest Trends" etc..)
    So on mouse over I'd like to animate the scale and rotation of the icon, and then if possible, to keep it in that new state until another icon is selected (rather than returning on mouse out).  All icons are for a design in Muse (CC 2014).
    Can anyone help me or point me towards some new tutorials which covers this?  I'd appreciate any clues on how to do this!
    I'm using Edge Animate CC 2014.1 on a Mac.
    Thanks in advance!
    Anne-Marie

    Ooh okay - thanks Heathrowe - I see what you mean about using the symbols to group animations, does seem much simpler!
    So, putting the question back out there...
    I've managed to implement the mouse rollover states;
    mouseenter:      sym.getSymbol("Concept").play('Over');
    mouseleave:      sym.getSymbol("Concept").playReverse();
    When each one is clicked, it holds;
    click:  sym.getSymbol("Concept").play('Click');
    Now I need to figure out the code to make each symbol continue to hold after it's been clicked on (even if the mouse rolls over them again), and playReverse ONLY when another symbol is clicked.  My plan is to have information appear under this banner which changes depending on which tab is selected.
    Here's my project if it helps to see...  http://we.tl/u8r6sZNvdA
    Any help would be hugely appreciated!!
    Thanks
