720p vs 1080

I have various qt's some in 720p some in 1080i , I have to edit them on one timeline and deliver to the broadcaster for transmission, would...
a. is this possiable on one timeline (do i open a 1920 x 1080 timeline and then edit the 720 in that ?) would somehow the timeline resize the 720 to 1080 ? or is it not possiable? or should I tell all producers to dleiver in either 720 or 1080?
b. I then have to deliver it as a qt to the broadcaster from them to play off avid , what would be the best qt to deliver for avid?
peace hope it makes sense?

What is the broadcaster asking for RDA? 720 or 1080, interlaced or progressive (or SD)? If interlaced delivery then my personal preference is not to intercut progressive footage in an otherwise interlaced edit ... better to work all progressive. Or if your 720p footage is double frame rate (ie 50/60p) then you can use the free JES Deinterlacer app to create good 1080i (50/60i) from your 720 source which would cut well with the native 1080i footage.
To answer your specific questions tho:
a) Yes, technically you can throw it all on one timeline and FCP will handle any resizing needed accordingly. 1080i in a 720p timeline will need to be deinterlaced tho, and 720p in a 1080i timeline will look progressive regardless.
b) Use ProRes 422.

  • Is there a "best way" in Adobe CC 2014 to scale 720p to 1080?

Meaning is their a visible difference if I do it on the PPro timeline vs, say doing the scaling in AME or After Effects?
Does one method give "better" results than another?
    Thanks

Actually, just completed some tests upscaling in Sorenson Squeeze and the results are really quite good.
Probably go that route unless a better idea is offered.

  • Convert my 1080 video to 720 while in FCPX

I inadvertently recorded 4 one hour lecture videos in 1080p instead of 720p. 1080 really slows down my 2008 iMac.
Can I have FCPX change it to 720 before making the master file?
The videos will be distributed via YouTube or on DVDs.

What version are you using? You don't see this
You don't see a button for Modify Settings?
BTW, DVD is standard definition only so the 1080 size doesn't matter as it's going to get crushed to 480. If you upload to YouTube using FCP you will have the option to select at 720p output.

  • Upscaling question. 720p to 1080p

ok guys i never upscale because i normally always shoot at 1080p
but i have to upscale some 720p to 1080 now and whats the best way to do it - what software? im guessing its not a case of just importing 720p footage into a 1080p timeline and scaling it up? what software or plugin or settings in after effects do people use to keep the quality okay on upscaling?
    cheers
    Andy

RedGiant's Instant HD does a good job at upscaling. See http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/all/magic-bullet-instant-hd/

  • Problem with Digital Cinema Desktop Preview on Macbook Pro

I hava a Macbook Pro 2.2 GHz with 2 GB RAM. I would like to use a connected 24"-Display for preview of my HD-Material (ProRes and HDV). Unfortunately I am not getting my Macbook Pro to playback all frames. Whend Digital Cinema Desktop Preview is activated, there are only still frames displayed. No smooth playing back neither in the canvas window nor the 24" display. I have External Video -> All Frames checked.
Does the Macbook Pro 2.2 not meet the specs for this feature?
Or is it a problem with Leopard? Is anyone with Tiger able using Digital Cinema Desktop Preview with succes?
    Regards,
    Joerg

So are you saying that the DVI output on my MacBook Pro IS true HD resolution and not a proxy like the canvas?
What I am saying is that the video feed coming out of the DVI port is YUV. Computer monitors take that YUV information and convert it to RGB for displaying purposes. So if you connect an Apple monitor to the DVI port, and then use that for Digital Cinema Preview, you are seeing a converted proxie image. The MXO takes the actual YUV footage and outputs that to the Apple display as YUV, and therefore presents full quality broadcast colors. And it does it pixel for pixel...the 23" display is 1920x1200, so there are thin black lines on the top and bottom.
AND the MXO software has a proc amp for adjusting color bars, and a BLUE ONLY option for proper monitor calibration. THis really is an amazing little box.
I'm using a Dell ultrasharp 20" that looks very good that way; I just didn't think it was HD.
It is, but it is a converted RGB image...and since it is 20", it isn't pixel for pixel (well, it would be for 720p, not 1080), and if it isn't pixel for pixel, then it is a converted image. Not suitable for color correction.
then using a DVI to HDMI cable I should be seeing HD from my Sony bravia also?
Yup...sure can. It will look pretty good too. But it being a consumer set, and again having a YUV>RGB converted image, it won't look as good as it could. The MXO would feed it a proper YUV signal, as would an Decklink HDP (but you need a decklink card with SDI out for that).

  • Apple TV and HD contents

I don't understand what the point of ATV supporting 1080i HD is. iTunes does not sell HD video's and now I found out if I create a 1080i movie in iMovie, I can not watch it via ATV since 1080i HD video will be downconverted to 960x540 by default. Does anybody know if Apple is planning to release a new software that will allow ATV to play 1080i contents in the future?

the first version of ATV only supports up to 720p. it is my guess that the hardware could support 1080i... but until Apple supports 720p in the ITMS, it is sort of useless conjecture to discuss 1080i. because of its online delivery paradigm, Apple will likely wait until the majority of its clients have 1080i or 1080p displays and broadbands speeds are high enough to deliver such "fat" content. i can't imagine that 720p or 1080 material will become available without changing the architecture of the store to add format preferences... that is, to allow people to choose whether they want to download the 1GB 480 version of the file, or 8GB 720p version of the same file... or whatever the file sizes end up being.

  • 120Hz

    *I am considering getting a 120HZ HDLCD my understanding is when running at this rate the system adds frames to compensate for speed variance, I am considering getting fcp and my questions are;
If I make or add frames of my choice to lesser fps videos can I save them at 120 fps in fcp?
also how high a frame rate can one set in fcp?
What is the best application to save said 120p fps video in?*
    120Hz refresh rate
The digital display technologies (LCD, plasma, DLP, LCoS, etc.) that have replaced picture tubes areprogressive scan by nature, displaying 60 video frames per second — often referred to as "60Hz." HDTVs with 120Hz refresh rate employ sophisticated video processing to double the standard rate to 120 frames per second by inserting either additional video frames or black frames. Because each video frame appears for only half the normal amount of time, on-screen motion looks smoother and more fluid, with less smearing. It's especially noticeable viewing fast-action sports and video games. This feature is available on an increasing number of flat-panel LCD TVs.

If I make or add frames of my choice to lesser fps videos can I save them at 120 fps in fcp?
FCP doesn't have an option to edit ANY format at 120fps. That video standard does not exist. The highest standard that does is 720p at 60fps. You cannot add frames to do this. That is not possible with any edit system. What the TVs do they all do internally...and that adding of frames is a HORRIBLE thing, IMHO. I don't know what on earth they were thinking. Filmmakers strive for the 24fps look and shoot film at 24fps. They don't shoot it at 120fps, because that looks just plain wrong. 120fps shooting is mainly used for slow motion...shoot 120fps, play back at 30fps, or 24fps.
also how high a frame rate can one set in fcp?
60fps. But you must be at 720p for that. The standard for 60fps is 720p. 1080 has the 30fps standard. There is no such thing as a 120fps format. Period. No professional uses it...so put that frame rate out of your mind.
What is the best application to save said 120p fps video in?*
    None.
The paragraph you downloaded is correct, but the TV is doing the processing of the imagry on it's end. None of that happens while shooting, nor editing. And it is just plain wrong, and needs to go away. I will say with GOOD confidence that no professional edits at 120fps.

  • SD Footage in HDV Project Anyone

has anyone here ever included *SD(720x480 DV)footage* in a *HDV project?* I have massive amounts on footage captured in SD from my Sony VX1000. I would like to move forward by editing all my projects in HDV format, which will include the DV footage. I downloaded a trial from BorisFX called "UpRez" that is supposed to take SD footage and make them work wihin the HDV format. My questions are:
1: Has anyone used the BorisFX "UpRez" plugin and does it really work
2: Is there a plugin bundled with FCP 6.x that does the same thiing
3: Can a HDV project playback on a SD meduim
4: If not can compressor "downsize" my HDV project to play back on SD mediums
    Thanks in Advance

As far as I know in 2009 all things will be digital, not necessarily HD. But if you want to keep you HDV timeline, though I would recommend transcoding to ProRes because of HDVs long-gop, I have had some success with using Compressor to upRes SD footage to use in an HD timeline. Using the frame controls use best for the resizing filter and deinterlace filter. Be aware that this will take quite a bit of time, depending on how beefy your machine is. Although, I've only been going as far as 720p. 1080 sizes will really hinder the look of the SD footage.
If you want to keep all you edits in HD, simply downconvert your finished edit using compressor to SD and encode your MPEG 2 files. You'll just have to decide if you want to crop the sides of your 16:9 footage to a 4:3 or letterbox the 16:9 into a 4:3 frame.
    hope this helps.

  • How can i put HD movie on a blu ray

I don't understand Apple.  I bought an iMac last week because I primarily do video and photography.  I was always told Macs were the way to go for such work. Now I am learning that Apple isn't exactly on the cutting edge of technology.  Their idea of HD is 720p.  I have a 1080p camcorder, a blu-ray player and burner, and a 1080p HDTV.  I returned the Apple TV because it only did 720p.  And Apple has no support for blu-ray.  So basically I am limited to 720p for all of my edited movies because Apple refuses to provide any solutions.  Did I completely miss the boat on something?  Everyone always told me, "Once you go Mac, you never go back".  Well I'm already wishing I had my PC back so I could watch my movies in full 1080p.  I find it hard to believe Apple could be so far behind the curve on this one.

I'm not sure what you're talking about - iMovie does 1080 - my Canon shoots in 1080p; now, after doing extensive tests when I first got it, I have decided to process the footage at 720p because a) while buying my HDTV, I literally could not tell the difference between 720 and 1080 at the distance I watch; b) my HDTV is 720p so processing the footage at 720 makes sense, and c) file sizes are grossly huge (I'm currently working on a project and have 90 GB of various files/clips littering my hard drive - and that's about one hour of video in 720p - in 1080 it'd be double that). Also, rendering and processing will take much longer. So I shoot in 1080, use MPEG Streamclip to convert it losslessly to 720 and then move it into iMovie. The result is great on my TV - granted, not blu-ray, but quite good (enough for me).
And, if you buy Toast (Roxio Toast), it has a plugin so you can burn blu-ray quality - they say; I use Toast, but not the plugin because I tried that as well and could not see enough of a difference to make it worthwhile for me. For me, 720 is fine.

  • Export low quality in first 7 seconds

    Hello again,
after i installed Premiere Pro CC the issue is now in the first seconds i get only a poor quality after then the picture is clear.
What the heck is this for an issue???
I´ve uploaded this to the cloud but cant change the privacy mode.
Slowly i get more and more anger cause nothing works right!!!!

    Hello Olly,
this is only for the first few seconds then its clear with no artefacts.
I run Premiere Pro for some month and had never any issues but with the newer versions
    the probs has just started.
The Moon pic is  1250 x 1250 i tried to export this in 720p and 1080 p with the same results.
The first few seconds you get square pixels and then you get a clear picture.
    This had never happend before.

  • How to import .MXF files in to FCP?

    Greetings
I got me some .mxf files on an external drive given to me by someone. They should contain 720p and 1080 video files but instead I was given .mxf files
What the heck are these things, and how do I get them in FCP? I can't import them as FCP doesn't know what they are... preliminary research indicates that .mxf files have something to do with Panasonic P2 cards (!?)
    Please help

Here we go again...someone didn't follow the proper procedures and now you are stuck. MXF files are most likely P2, but you really should ask. Because Avid captures as MXF files. Is there a CONTENTS folder, and inside 6 folders, then the MXF files? or just looks files? What are they named? If they have the CONTENTS folder and the entire structure in intact, you need to import them with LOG AND TRANSFER, in the FILE menu. Here's the workflow: P2 Workflow with FCP 6
If there is no structure like that, then you need to either get RAYLIGHT or MXF4QT or Calibrated software to work with these files in FCP. And that would be the ONLY way. See what happens when people don't do things right?

  • James Bond movies the same as the 50th Anniversary Blu-Ray edition?

Are the James Bond movies currently in the (Dutch) iTunes Store, the same as the 50th Anniversary Blu-Ray edition (except from the HD 720p vs 1080)?
    http://www.007.com/bond-50-on-blu-ray/

Blu-Ray has better image quality.  Apple TV only supports content up to 8Mbps for 1080p whereas Blu-Ray can go as high as 40Mbps.
What this means in a nutshell is that the content in iTunes is more compressed, which will have an impact with picture quality.  I won't even go in to talking about sound.
At the end of the day I guess it really depends on your setup and what you're looking to get out of it.  I've seen the newer content in iTunes (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) and it looks really good.  I've also downloaded Gladiator (1080p) and it looks mediocre at best.

  • Apple TV and 1080p

I have a Apple TV (40 gig) on the way to my house. I know that the ATV can output at 1080p, but for what purpose? As far as I can tell the ATV can't do playback on any 1080p material, am I correct on this assumption? If so, does this tell us that down the road the existing Apple TV lacks the processing power to do 1080p playback when (in that land of Oz in the somewhat distant future) there are 1080p movie downloads available?

yes it just upscale the 720p to 1080
which is pretty much what a tv which run 1080 does too
if it run fullscreen that is
if the tv is bad at upscaling then maybe the atv can do a better job
but i doubt there is much difference
it's imho a popword for supported feature lists
it's kinda like the digital zoom of mediaCenters :P
not sure why it dont do 1080P video if it's the spcs which cant handle it
or if they felt it would be a strain on the network and
more so on the internet connection to have 1080P

  • Editing time base

I shoot with a Panasonic HVX200 at 720P24. I want to shoot 24p for the natural non-video look.
The compressor settings do not have an option for DVCPROHD 24 so when I accept the pop-up window suggestion that I "change the sequence settings to match my clip settings" the editing timebase sets at 59.94.
I thought I was shooting 24 progressive frames and that FCP Studio allows for this? Am I going to lose the effect of 24p that I am looking for?
When I shoot with my Canon Vixia HV 30, the editing time base is 29.97.
Can I mix clips from both cameras in the same timeline? They look fine on playback with the settings set at 59.97. ( I just read that you cannot nest clips from with different sequence settings).
    THANKS!!

    >1. Does this mean that editing in a 59.97 time base as dictated by the use of the FireStore, I am not taking advantage of the 24 progressive frames?
Yup.  The only way to get 720p at 23.98 is with a P2 card and shooting at 720p 24PN.  You can shoot 1080i 24pA with the card as well, and FCP will remove the advanced pulldown.  I don't think the Firestore records the Advanced pulldown...worth a test.
    >2. If I use the Variable Frame Rate, and shoot in 60FPS, then I am unable to get the smooth slo-mo feel? The camera maxes out at 60 FPS.
Yup.  You are not able to get smooth slow motion if you shoot 60fps for use in a 60fps sequence.  Just like 30fps slowed down in a 30fps sequence isn't smooth.
    >I purchased the camera for the same reasons most people do. To get that 24 progressive frames and have a film like look.
Then get a 64GB P2 card.  They are only like $650.
    >Using the Firestore, seems to eliminate all of the benefits of this great camera.
WRONG!  You reap a LOT of benefit of this camera.  Shooting 4:2:2 color space, instead of 4:2:0 that AVCHD, HDV, XDCAM shoot in.  Shooting with 3 CCDS, and not a single sensor that can give you rolling shutter (CMOS sensor).  Nice codec for easy editing in FCP (DVCPRO HD).  You can also shoot directly to QT on the firestore, eliminating the need to log and transfer.
But yes, the P2 card, that the camera was designed for, has more options. You bought a great camera, but a third party add-on device that doesn't do everything that a P2 card does.  BUT, I think the drive can record 1080i 24pA...and you can remove pulldown to get to 23.98.  And then shoot 720p60 for smooth slow motion...upscale the footage 50% from 720p to 1080.  It doesn't do a bad job of that.

  • Dvcpro50 problem in fcp with hvx200

I have been having problems with dvcpro50 footage in fcp. I have set all the correct sequence and capture settings, but when I play the clips in fcp it looks like there are jagged edges around people and any solid objects. this only happens when I edit dvcpro50. I have used 720p aand 1080 footage in fcp and its fine. When I watch the dvc50 footage from the lcd screen on the camera looks fine, but when captured in fcp it looks bad. If anyone can help me I would appreciatie it.

Shane's Stock Answer #2: Blurry playback
ONLY JUDGE THE QUALITY OF YOUR MATERIAL ON AN EXTERNAL NTSC MONITOR, OR AT LEAST A TV.
    1. Disable overlays on the canvas
    2. Make sure you've rendered everything (no green bars at the top of the timeline
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24787
Video playback requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or NTSC monitor routed thru your camera or deck.
