Actual Work Overwrites Duration

Hi All
I sooooo hope somebody can assist me.  I think I am about to go mad.
I have a problem on PWA.  Timesheet or Tasks view.
Scenario: Project 1 with one task.  Duration and all units set to Hours (in project professional and PWA views). Default task type is Fixed Units or Fixed Work (tried both).
Task Start and End date are TODAY.  Duration and work are both set to 1h.
When ANY of my resources (and some have different base calendars) add actual
hours from task view or from the timesheet, it automatically changes the duration to an estimated full day (8h?).  Work, Actual Work and Remaining work are exactly right.  Just the duration changes.
I am sure I am missing something so very simple.
Can anybody assist?
Thank you!

For the 1h duration task, are resources booking more than the allotted work to the task itself?
e.g., if Task A work is 1hrs (duration 1hr ~ 2 resources), and resources book combined 6hrs to task A, the duration will increase to accommodate the additional work applied to the task.

  • Actual Work vs Actual Duration

What is the difference between Actual Work and Actual Duration?

They are completely different, even though they appear to be measured in the same units.
A task can have a duration and within that duration there may be zero work or any amount greater than zero.
Duration determines how long a task will take, since it is the time between the start and the finish of the task.
Work is usually, but not always, what it takes to get the task done, and usually, but not always, determines how much the task will cost.
Before the task starts, the duration and the work are both "scheduled". There is no actual of either, and both are remaining. After the task starts, and after some work is expended on it, it accumulates some actual duration and some actual work, and some
remaining duration and remaining work remains.
duration = actual duration + remaining duration
work = actual work + remaining work
... until all of both of them is actual and there is no remaining of either.
Duration is like the envelope. the work must occur inside the duration.
The actual work must occur inside the actual duration.
    Hope this helps.

  • Project Versions: Plan Work and Actual Work

    Hi,
    Can you pls suggest me,
where can i get Project actual work and planned work from R/3.
which R/3 table will provide this information for different Project Versions.
Thes values are required against each Project version.
Your valuable inputs will be rewarded.
    Thanks,
    Lakshmi.

    Hi,
We have the following scenario: The system does not default the Actual Duration when the Start Date, Time and Finish Date, Time are entered on the time confirmation, it should calculate the time and insert the value in the Actual Duration field.
    Is it possilbe.

  • Need to Enter Real Subtask "Actual Work" and "Actual Finish"

I am creating a Project file by importing a CSV file.  I need to be able to import both the real Actual Work hours and the real Actual Finish dates contained in the CSV file.  Somehow Project ties these two together for finished Subtasks:
entering the Actual Work sets the Actual Finish.  And entering the Actual Finish clears the Actual Work.
Is there a sequence to enter those for a Subtask, and display what is in the CSV file, rather than what Project wants to compute?

    andyrice,
If you set the % Work Complete field to 100%, then the Actual Finish field should not be empty. Do you have automatic calculation turned off? Are you using manual scheduling mode?
For the test sequence I ran, my task type is Fixed Work. I set % Work Complete to 100%. At that point Project assumes the task finished as planned so it sets the Actual Finish date to be the Finish date and the Actual Work to equal the Work. Now you need
to adjust the work and finish date. If you simply change the value in the Actual Work field, Project will reset the % work complete if the actual work value does not equal the Work field (remember, task is fixed work). So to "replan" the task to what actually
happened, you must update the Work field with the actual work value. Finally, if the Actual Finish is not the Finish, then the Actual Finish date must be updated. Try that.
    Project's scheduling equation is:
    Duration = Work/Units.

  • Adding time phased actual work to fixed work task with finish no later than constraint

I am using MS Project Pro 2010, no service packs are installed. I have a 40 hour fixed work task, auto scheduling is on, and I've set a finish no later than constraint 4 weeks into the future. I have assigned a single resource with assignment units of 1.0
and Project correctly determines a 5 day duration and schedules the task from the start of the project with the task start date the same as project start date and 8 hrs per day.
I switch to task usage view with the time phased time scale set to weeks (middle) and days (bottom) and add the actual work field. Calculate on edit is selected in project options. When I add 8 hours to day one (which matches the planned work), the planned
work on the last day of the duration changes to 2 hours and the remaining 30 hours is spread at 10 hrs each to the three days in the middle and the duration changes to 4.2 days. Work stays the same as expected.
The behavior I expected is that after I add the 8 hours of actual work nothing would change since remaining work is 32 hours and there are 4 days left in the schedule and the work is already scheduled for 8 hrs/day. When I continue to add actual work of
8 hours to each day, the duration continues to go down until I’m adding 8 hours past the duration. What am I doing wrong? This behavior persists whether or not I select the "move unfinished parts…” options in the project options or not. The only way to
achieve the expected result is to remove the constraint, add the actual work and then reapply the constraint. I assume I have missed an option that needs to be correctly set to achieve the expected (and desired) result. Thanks.

Thanks, Julie.  I thought it was just me.  The reason for the FNLT constraint is that I'm not really scheduling projects but scheduling a single multi-unit resource in a shop environment where many projects are running through at the
same time.  I've set up a single resource with units equal to the number of shop personnel and I'm intentionally forcing overallocations (should there be any) by levelling and by not allowing Project to move my tasks any further than externally mandated
delivery dates.  From that, I can then see where I will need to alter shop release dates, allocate overtime, hire new workers or subcontract the work.  By entering actual work weekly, I can also see where I might have extra hours to use elsewhere
or vice versa.  Unfortunately, a deadline will not prevent Project from moving the tasks beyond the customer provided date when leveling.  This method worked fairly well in Project 2007 even though it's not really what the software was intended for.
I obviously only use a fraction of Project's capabilities.  There's probably better-suited tools out there but this is the one I have and it actually does a great job at it.  I'm sure I can still make it work in 2010 but it looks like I'll have to
modify my approach.  I'll leave the question open a while longer and see if I get any additional feedback.  If not, I'll mark it answered and move on.  Thanks, again.

  • Error Project Server 2010, % Complete, Work and Actual Work

    Hi Everyone
I have a Project Server 2010 SP2 Environment, The farm contains 3 Servers.
1 WFE, 1WebApp, 1 BD. All servers in the farm are Windows Server 2008 R2 and the Data Base Server is SQL Server 2008 R2
    The Context:
The Project Managers create the Project in Project Professional 2010 SP2 for support Annual Maintenance about a software, then the team members go to my tasks in PWA to create the task inside the stage in the project, then they put the actual work, then they
send the progress to his project manager.
So, the project manager goes to the approval page to approve two times, one, the task creation and two, the progress.
So far all ok but when the project manager open the Gantt in Project Professional 2010 SP2 , the task that the team member has sent appear with a 100 percent complete, but the work with 0 hours and the actual work with 0 hours too, being that should appear
with the hours the team member has sent, that is my problem.
This occur only with this project manger and his team member, all of others project managers in the platform don't report this issue.
I already have  re open the project and re publish too
So , let me know if you have some idea about this issue.
Erick Gutiérrez PMI Membership #ID 2089740 MTCS - Microsoft Project Server Managing Projects

Only other ideas is to make sure the duration isn't 0, which would make it a milestone.
Have the resources, recall the timesheets and resubmit.  Run it thru cycle again and see if they actual show up.
Finally, you can run SQL query and see where the data may be.
    1) Check if status manager is who you think it is
    2) Check if project shows actuals in sql.  Doesn't explain why not showing in schedule.

  • When actual work goes over planned work

Is there a way to show that is a task is over 100% for work complete?
    Here is the situation.
Planned work is 80 hrs and actual work is 93 hours but project shows work complete to 100% but the task is not finished yet.
    Can I show over 100%?

    % complete is (Actual Duration/Duration) * 100
    % Work Complete is (Actual work/work) * 100
As Guillaume notes, if the Actual work exceeds the original work estimate, Project will assume the task is complete.  You can add the Remaining Work field to a task view but if you have multiple resources assigned you may wish to add the field to the
Task Usage view to capture Actual and Remaining Work on an assignment by assignment basis.
If you have saved a baseline before tracking - Project will calculate Work Variance for you -- the difference between baseline Work (your plan) and Work.

  • How to show no. of actual working days in Payslip in case of +ve time mgt

    Dear Experts,
We have a requirement of showing no. of actual working days in payslip, which should be Calendar Days-(Paid+Unpaid absence). I created an w/t 1WRD for actual working days. Our paid absence w/t is 2006 and unpaid absence is 2005 copied from /845 and /846 respectively, both the absences are included in absence valuation table and working fine in that respect. But issue is i wrote a small PCR for calculating actual working days like below:
    ZWRD
         NUM=TKSOLL Set
         NUM-E 2005
         NUM-E 2006
        ADDWTE1WRD
But still its fetching full working days i.e. calendar days 30 or 31 not deducting paid or unpaid absence for a month.
Pls help, what else should i do.
    Regards

Sorry, i am unable to paste RT, but its exactly as below
    01, April, 2011
    1WRD Working days     30.00
    2006  Paid Absence       2.00
    02, May, 2011
    1WRD Working days     31.00
    2005  Unpaid Absence   1.00

  • I seem to have fixed my problem of randomly occuring errors in my filterwheel control. But I don't know why this should actually work.

    Hi there,
I am using a thorlabs fw102B filterwheel. It's connected via USB (simulating COM port, that's what it says in MAX). The second device is a camera, also connected via USB. The application is running 24/7, at least that's what it's supposed to do. LabView version is 8.6.
The LabView code I wrote for this, was never really finished, meaning I totally ignored error handling in the first program version.  That never bothered me, because the program ran for weeks and months without any problem. Whenever I had to reboot my system it was not LabViews fault, but I was changing something else.
Recently I was running into problems with the filterwheel (after a system reboot). However, I don't understand the error in the first place: The filterwheel is supposed to change position every 15 minutes, in between the camera is taking exposures, then the data is written to an ASCII-file (only ~156 kB). At first the error occured just once: the filterwheel was set to the wrong position for about 15 minutes, which might happen, as it is not really could in counting. A few days later it was in that wrong positon for one hour, so it didn't respond to the "move" order four times in a row. Finally I didn't move at all anymore. The error message I was getting is "0xFFFFFFF unkown status code". In my opinion the communcation to the filterwheel got lost somehow. I don't know a better explantion.
But why should it recover after some time?
The problem usually occured at night, when nobody is there to watch.
I investigated the behaviour in a second setup (see attachment). There is only the filterwheel connected. Through randomly unplugging the USB or power cable I was able to reproduce 'session handle is not valid', 'unkown status code' and 'session handle lost'. The program enters the 'true case', the session is to be closed and resetted, then it shall be reinitialized. This actually works as soon as the cables are reconnected. But why?
The close.vi still returns 'session handle is not valid', The reset.vi returns the same, but initialize.vi returns 'No Error' and the system works again.
What am I not getting here?
I read some threads here and somebody mentioned for another instrument/problem to use the 'reset' command twice. So I tried 'close-initialize', 'reset-reset-initialize', 'reset-initialize' but only 'close-reset-initialize' works (not surprising). Yet I still get the same errors (probe 1 and 2). Am I introducing more bugs without knowing than I fixed?
    I AM CONFUSED.

    Hello Ulrich,
thank you for your answer. Concerning the dataflow I agree and it is what I usually do. Actually I follow the dataflow paradigm whenever there is no problem (the 'false case' in the screenshot):
    “FW102x Initialize.vi” -> “FW102x Get Position.vi” -> “FW102x Set Position.vi”.
Whenever there is a mistake, this just doesn't work with these drivers. The sequence
    “FW102x Initialize.vi” -> “FW102x Get Position.vi”  -> ///error/// -> “FW102x Close.vi”, “FW102x Reset.vi”  ;; “FW102x Initialize.vi”
will give me errors for “FW102x Close.vi”, “FW102x Reset.vi”  and “FW102x Initialize.vi” reporting "session handle not valid". However, if I "bypass" the instrument handles directly from the first "Initialize" to "Close" and "Reset", they will report the same error, but the second "Initialize" will work again. I can even merge the first two frames and execute "Close" and "Reset" at the same time to do so. But whenever I try something else, e.g. do the 'correct' wiring, I am unable to close, reset or reinitialize. I have to restart LabView completely, to make the vi work again. So I guess the session is still hanging around somewhere in memory, but I can't access it anymore.
Surprisingly, wherever I put Probes on the data handle wires they show the correct "ASRL5::INSTR" (with or without correct wiring). But only the "Bypass" wire makes the vi work. Since you couldn't find the drivers in the driver network, I guess they might just run into problems, if an error occurs.
But thanks for your comment anyway. The problem is fixed for the moment. It's just that I prefer to actually know what I am doing here instead of producing some code I'd rather not show anyone.

  • What is the difference between Wine, Wineskin, Winery and Wine Bottler, and how do I get Wine to *ACTUALLY* work in Mountain Lion?

Ok, so this is my first post here and I am admittedly terrible at forums. Someone might say, "This was addressed in the ___________ thread by __________! Go read it!" --- that may be so but I've spent enough hours trying to google this problem into submission to no avail based on what is apparently working for others, so I would like a chance to get specific answers to specific questions that aren't from Mar 2011, etc.
So first of all, I'm confused by all the various Wine programs/apps/whatevers. I've seen Wine, Wineskin, Winery, Wine Bottler, and at this point I wouldn't be surprised if there are even more than that. What's the difference between all of these and how do they work with one another? What do I actually need to get windows programs working?
All of my google searches have led me to people giving out fish, but no one giving out fishing lessons. I'm not a pro at mac and windows and all that, but I'm a fairly bright individual who gets VERY frustrated, very quickly, when I don't understand the why and how of something I'm attempting.
I've also found "answers" where the person attempting to help starts off helpful enough, but degrades into the most archaic of techno-babble after about 5-6 sentences. On the other hand, I've watched tutorials on youtube where the poster decides to skip (apparently crucial) sections of the tutorial, and mutters such gems as: "... you might wanna have to run Wine first before you can do anything, cuz I think it has to configure it and set up a bunch of stuff"
    O.o
A happy medium between techno-babble and the most basic of explanations would be ideal for me, and I'd imagine for others as well.
Here is a summarized history of my relationship with Wine:
Diablo II - I downloaded this awesome thing which ended up being... uh... I guess Diablo II in a Wineskin "wrapper". I'm not sure, all I know is that it's a D2 icon, and if I go to 'show package contents', it's got C drive, Program Files, et cetera inside of it. I double click it, it launches D2, and it works like a dream. <3
'Vanilla Install' - That's what I heard someone call it. It was the command/terminal style install using xquartz and xcode found at http://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/. I followed every instruction to the letter, and got all the way to '$ sudo port install wine', at which point it started going smoothly, free from the possible error he described regarding the installation of xcode, and then just failed after I left the room to use the restroom and came back. Please don't ask me to repeat what the error was, because honestly, after reading more things on the interwebs, I'm confused as to why it's even necessary to go through all of that, so I'd rather not try that route again anyways, rendering the error message quite possibly irrelevant.
Wine + Wine Bottler - So I decided to try to seek out an easier method, as I know that one must exist that doesn't involve command lines. I found a video tutorial at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0BBkISOcEA, and oh man would it be great if that method had actually worked. Again, I followed all instructions provided to procure my free fish, and at the point in the video where he declares that "xquarts or x11 will open" - it doesn't open. Nothing opens. I was trying to install Star Sonata, btw.
So here I am, thoroughly worn out, frustrated at all the random places Wine is installed on my mac now, and just want someone to explain it all, from top down, without getting toooooooo technical on me. I know that might be asking a lot...

    ## I know that the poster has already found a solution, but the following is a possible answer for others that have similar issues.
For Winebottler, just go to their website and download it. Run the program. Choose .wine as your prefix (best choice) or whatever suits you best. You'll need a functional X11. If you can't use the one that comes with your mac, download the latest one from the website.
If your issue is one with Winebottler's Wine not running correctly due to X11, then you have a pretty ugly problem, although a simple upgrade is the best solution (Upgrade XQuartz.app).
    http://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/#part-1
The above website is the easiest way to get REAL wine on your computer. First of all, Wineskin WInery, etc. are NOT WINE. They are 3rd party apps that may use Wine or may have originally part of Wine, but they are no longer up to date with Wine. WineBottler is currently up to date with the stable releases of Wine (but not the maintenence releases).
For the website tutorial and to run Wine on your mac without using a thrid party app, you will need to know a few things.
First, you will need to know basic control of the command line. That means, sudo (you must know the administrator password to your computer), and the forms of cd (change directory).
Second, you will need Xcode. Download 4.2 (stable) or whatever other versions you want, but beware: It is over 1 GB, and you will need time for it to work.
Third, you will need to get MacPorts and configure it. The tutorial should have this data.
When you download wine (use sudo port install wine-devel for the latest development release of wine), it will first download a lot of dependencies. This will take a while. After that, it will download wine itself.
After obtaining wine, to run a program, open the terminal.app window.
    cd desktop/XYZ/ZYZ\ WRQ
The above will first enter the desktop, then folder XYZ, then folder ZYZ WRQ. From here,
    wine th11e.exe
Or whatever executable you are trying to open. (Using Subterranean Animism as my example).
It should, in theory, run the program. Watch the terminal for errors. If there is an X11 problem, then it's not wine acting up. If the app crashes or has other issues, check the Wine Application Database to see if your app is compatible with wine.
If you have any further questions or other things, feel free to reply; I may or may not get back to you, but there's a good chance that someone will come in eventually. Otherwise, the Wine Wiki should have some information.

i recently lost my 3rd Gen iPod and ive been using find my iPhone to send messages to it, my email then instantly tells me that it had been displayed or it suonded off however it doesn't find the iPod's current location. you guys think this app actually works? i feel like my alerts are just bouncing back at me. please help. Thanks!

... AFAIC Location Services is a joke.
With both devices sitting side by side on my kitchen table, Location Services has NEVER shown the devices to be any where close to each other, and at times Location Services has been as much as a 1/4 of a mile off between the two devices.
Your iPod Touch has no GPS receiver so determining its location relies upon wireless routers whose location is known. Its "location" is actually that of a wireless router. Your iPhone 4 can use GPS, cellular triangulation, and Wi-Fi. One would think GPS would be most accurate but urban areas have a greater density of cells and GPS signals are easily obstructed so cellular triangulation is often more accurate.
Therefore the two devices' locations can be expected to be different. Differences of a quarter mile are easily explained if you understand how location services works: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1975
Skyhook Wireless (I think Apple uses its own database now): http://www.skyhookwireless.com/howitworks/
Location Services is not a "joke"; its intended use is for basic navigation and for such applications as determining where the nearest restaurant is. It cannot tell you that your iPod is under the couch cushions and that your iPhone is in the car.

    Hi,
One of our PMs is trying to change a task in his project plan and gets the following message: "cannot delete or reassign tasks or assignments with protected actuals" . This would normally be ok since we have setup actual work to be reported only
through the timesheets but....when checking actual work on this task, there is only 1 resource allocated and he reported no hours. Interestingly, it shows 0 in the actual work and it's not empty (as you would expect if you dont report hours).
We tried to recall the timesheets of that resource and resubmit them (without any hours again) but that didnt work either. Idea good ideas?

has user changed "Remaining Work" to 0? I have not tested, but I assume that cause 0 displayed as Áctual Work and stops you from deleting task.

  • How to get X-FI to actually work on Vi

    1. Uninstall Creative Programs
    2. Uninstall Creative Drivers
    3. Use Driver Sweeper to clean the last traces of 'em off
    4. Install Daniel K's drivers.
Fixed everything for me. Stupid musical-chairs bug with the speaker channels sometimes rotating one or two channels to the left, lack of CMSS support, sound randomly turning off... EVERYTHING.
Honestly, Creative. What's going on How is it that one guy released a set of drivers back in FEBRUARY that got everything working for your pathetic equipment, when it's taken you four more months to release beta drivers that frankly DON'T WORK How sad is it for a multi-billion-dollar international company with history going back 20 years to not only get scooped by one guy on his home computer, but also fail to figure out how HE got YOUR equipment working better than you, half a year after the fact
Maybe Creative needs to reevaluate itself. Look around Google. Look at your own forums. People HATE you and your products. Maybe you guys need to stop rushing to rebadge all your crap with all the latest-and-greatest when none of it actually works. I believe that's called false advertising. Maybe you need to stop trying to slap "Fatalty" on all your products so spoiled little teenagers think they really need a $200 sound card to compete in games. Maybe you need to just stop thinking dollars and cents and focus on product quality.
You might have a monopoly on the soundcard market now, but the rate you're going, it won't last. And if you don't get your act together, your customers are going to wise up and leave for greener pastures soon.
Oh, and I should add: I only bought your X-Fi Platinum because my onboard audio had an annoying interference problem, and your soundcard was on clearance for $60. So I took a chance. And honestly, I regret it. If I could, I'd return it. I would NEVER have paid $00-200 for your junk, your poor driver support, and your attitude, and I'm never going to pay for it again.

Acutally, i dont feel the difference between original and modded one. Got Vistax64 X-fi gamer fatality pro, phenom 9850 and dual EN8800GTX.
Im not involved in Creative Company Issues, but as a common user from my point of view it looks like this:
Creative got swift kick in da nuts from micro$oft because they had created EAX and whole equipment relying on DirectSound shell by micro$oft that micro$soft for inconvincing reason (for them developed for many years DirectSound shell suddenly are useless) that software sound processors are less demanding (!) for system than DirectSound+memory on creative X-fi's . So they left Creative in situation that in what i truly symphatise with them. they've developed 5th(or 4th) generation of EAX that was relying on micro$oft shell (they left DirectX thought, but restricted it as a Vista Native. the point is (proved) that they developed it on XP) and suddenly, for no serious reason they just dropped this technology. Got it m8 There is a clone of DirectSound - OpenAL that came for linux but whole vista system doesnt created to work with. Try to implement driver which are able to communicate between processor and x-fi without DirectSound shell on which most x-fi features are based on, and stop whining, m8 . They can make stable driver but then you would whine about loss of EAX, Crystaliser and hardware support, which are unable to work with vista[tm] system. You will got stable driver though. Do you know hot the swift kick in the nuts taste, m8 I think that they should work to make driver with their own compatible shell instead of looking of compatibility with vista. POINT!

    Hi
Actual work in MS project project is different than PWA Business Intelligence report
(Numbers are different) Di u know why?

    Hi Project help,
As mentionned before, I suggest you to open the period, recall the timesheet, update actuals and submit
it, approve it by the project manager, open the plan and publish it.
The steps can be performed using a delegation session if you don't want to bother the team member and the
    project manager.
