Actual Work vs Actual Duration

What is the difference between Actual Work and Actual Duration?

They are completely different, even though they appear to be measured in the same units.
A task can have a duration and within that duration there may be zero work or any amount greater than zero.
Duration determines how long a task will take, since it is the time between the start and the finish of the task.
Work is usually, but not always, what it takes to get the task done, and usually, but not always, determines how much the task will cost.
Before the task starts, the duration and the work are both "scheduled". There is no actual of either, and both are remaining. After the task starts, and after some work is expended on it, it accumulates some actual duration and some actual work, and some
remaining duration and remaining work remains.
duration = actual duration + remaining duration
work = actual work + remaining work
... until all of both of them is actual and there is no remaining of either.
Duration is like the envelope. the work must occur inside the duration.
The actual work must occur inside the actual duration.
Hope this helps.

  • TABLE: ACTUAL DURATION IN THE ORDER CONFIRMATION

    HI EXPERT,
WHAT'S THE TABLE OF THE "ACTUAL DURATION OF THE ACTIVITY" CORUF-IDAUV IN THE "ORDER CONFIRMATION"
    THANKS

    Hi Bakkali,
The table AFVV stores all the dates related information for the activity. Unfortuenately you can not get the actual duration directly, as such field does not exits. But you can use the following information to calculate it:
ISDD (actual start), IEDD  (actual finish),
Alternative is use the function CXPS_CALC_FIELDS_FOR_ACT,
which you get the the actual duration too: CALCULATED- IDAUER (actual duration).
    Kind regards,

  • Actual duration is overwritten by quantity field

    Hi all,
we have a problem in CRM service. When entering the times/dates in the confirmation, the actual duration
is overwritten by the quantity. What happens is this:
we enter the start date/time, and enddate/time
we enter the actual duration, and give enter.
After this, we enter the quantity, and now the actual duration is overwritten by the quantity field.
Anybody an idea how to solve this?
    regards,

  • Actual duration

Please someone can explain how does the system calculate the Actual duration field in Total confirmation data screen in IW41. Actual start and finish dates and times are involved but what else?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
In the Confirmation Data section of the screen there is a Actual Duration field (IDAUR) where a manual entry can be made.
On Total Confirmation Data section of IW41 screen there is a calculated Actual Duration field (IDAUV). This duration is calculated as lenfth of time from ACTUAL START to ACTUAL FINISH Date/time. These fields are visable on operation DATES tab. Field is calculated but not stored in any database table.

  • Newbie question: working with note durations across measure breaks

Hi, I'm a newbie with Garage Band. Last night I was entering some music as a software instrument, using the editor in both musical notation view and the other view (where the notes are solid rectangles). I'm having problems with note lengths. When I enter an eighth note, I want it to stay an eighth note . But when I copy-and-paste them, they don't start at the right place and the duration gets strange.
I also had a lot of problems ending a 4/4 measure with an eighth note (on the "and" of beat 4) that should be tied to the first note in the next measure. I couldn't do this easily. I finally switched to the non-music notation mode, and dragged the right side of the note across the measure boundary, but with that, I couldn't get an eighth note, it would only go for a full beat in the next measure.
    Thank for any help
    j

So, when I expect to add a quarter note (actually it should be notated as two tied eighth notes), instead I'm getting a dotted quarter note (appearing as an eighth note tied to a quarter note).
As I said, musical notation is not directly tied to the duration of the notes. So before you add that last quarter note, the display is perfectly musical. Now when you add the last note, the display switches and displays the notes differently. I just tried it out, I can add that note in the notation view (you might want to put it on the 1 of the next beat and then drag it to the left a little).
Most experienced GB users don't bother to use the notation view for editing, but use the "piano roll" view which gives you a lot more control about how the notes sound. Then let GB do the job of displaying them - you don't have andy influence on that anyway.

  • Actual Work Overwrites Duration

    Hi All
I sooooo hope somebody can assist me.  I think I am about to go mad.
I have a problem on PWA.  Timesheet or Tasks view.
Scenario: Project 1 with one task.  Duration and all units set to Hours (in project professional and PWA views). Default task type is Fixed Units or Fixed Work (tried both).
Task Start and End date are TODAY.  Duration and work are both set to 1h.
When ANY of my resources (and some have different base calendars) add actual
hours from task view or from the timesheet, it automatically changes the duration to an estimated full day (8h?).  Work, Actual Work and Remaining work are exactly right.  Just the duration changes.
I am sure I am missing something so very simple.
    Can anybody assist?
    Thank you!

For the 1h duration task, are resources booking more than the allotted work to the task itself?
e.g., if Task A work is 1hrs (duration 1hr ~ 2 resources), and resources book combined 6hrs to task A, the duration will increase to accommodate the additional work applied to the task.

    Hi,
We have the following scenario: The system does not default the Actual Duration when the Start Date, Time and Finish Date, Time are entered on the time confirmation, it should calculate the time and insert the value in the Actual Duration field.

  • When actual work goes over planned work

Is there a way to show that is a task is over 100% for work complete?
    Here is the situation.
Planned work is 80 hrs and actual work is 93 hours but project shows work complete to 100% but the task is not finished yet.
    Can I show over 100%?

    % complete is (Actual Duration/Duration) * 100
    % Work Complete is (Actual work/work) * 100
As Guillaume notes, if the Actual work exceeds the original work estimate, Project will assume the task is complete.  You can add the Remaining Work field to a task view but if you have multiple resources assigned you may wish to add the field to the
Task Usage view to capture Actual and Remaining Work on an assignment by assignment basis.
If you have saved a baseline before tracking - Project will calculate Work Variance for you -- the difference between baseline Work (your plan) and Work.

Like Trevor I couldn't find the option in 2013 version nor in previous versions of MSP. Maybe a more experienced fellow will jump in and bring more knowledge.
That being said, there is the following advanced option which could be seen in a similar way if you look at the description. By default (option cleared) if you enter a %complete, Project will spread the actual work until the actual duration. If you check
the option, it will consider the status date instead. Thus it will apply for your definition where you enter 100% complete.
    Hope this helps,

  • Project planing compare with actual situation

    Hello all,
    I have following questions:
    1. Is there a possibility to see in the GANTT chart both the projected and real duration of a task/phase, ideally two rectangles for each component - similar to MS Project for example?
    2. Is there any possibility to automatically update scheduling of dependent tasks when the actual duration of a task is different from the planned duration? After the phase is released, items are no longer scheduled automatically...
    Thanks very much
    Marcel

    Hi,
    to question 1:
As long as the task is not completed, you will see the percent completed in a different color on the task. Once the task is completed, the GANTT chart shows the actual start and finish date. So in the GANTT chart, you don't see planned and actual.
    Question 2:
You are correct, once released it will not schedule automatically any more. I guess, there is a class method for scheduling out there which could be called in a BadI. Maybe Bjoern knows more about it....
I know, this is not too helpful, but that's it how it works in standard.
    Regards,
    Jochen

  • Actual cost percentage distribution

    hi!
i want to track my actual cost percentage regardless of the time.
I know the %complete is actual duration / baseline duration. I need to see a percentage field in a column which shows the percentage. My resources are "cost" resources
for example there is a project. Duration 50 days and 2 tasks. A and B ,  A:20 days  B:30 days and A and B have the same cost.
    B starts when A finished.
and at the 20th day A finishes and i want to see that percentage column 50%
    For all tasks and subtasks.
    Thanks

A small correction is necessary immediately. % Complete = actual duration/total duration where total duration = actual duration + remaining duration.
Baseline duration doesn't come into it.
When you say "I need to see a percentage field in a column which shows the percentage", the question is "percentage of what"?
Let's say A and B have the same cost, $50 each, assigned as 50 units of a cost type resource named "cost of A" and "cost of B" respectively.
If A started as scheduled and finishes as scheduled with 20 days actual duration then at the end of day 20 (the status date) you can "mark on track" (there's a button for it on the ribbon). Note that you can't do this if A did not start as scheduled and
finish as scheduled and have an actual duration of 20 days.
MSP calculates the actual cost, which is the $50 for task A. There is no field built in to MSP for actual cost/total cost or the % cost, but it is easy to make one with a custom field. Just right click on the heading of any column, insert field, customise
    field, and write the formula:
    ([actual cost]/[cost])*100&" %"
    ... and there it is.

  • Equpment PRT actual hours consumption, confirmation

    Hi,
Equipment PRT assgined to Maintenance Order operation. For the PRT created measurement counter of same unit as we defined in operation and the counter reading initialized . The same counter is assigned to PRT.
Now we need to confirm the actual duration of the PRT. How can i approach.
Send me any solutions if you find with screenshots or testing notes.
    PRT Usage field: ARBI
Maintenance Order operation unit: HR (hours)
    Measurement counter unit: HR (hours)
    Regards
    Chinnu

    Hi,
Create the Equipment as PRT. Create Measuring point & counter plan for that equipment. Assign those in Equipment master.
Further more, assign that PRT in routing. Give the usage value & everything in routing. This will be done by PP guys. Based on the production confirmation, measurement document will be created.
Either running Deadline monitoring manually or automatically through background job, maintenance order can be created automatically.
    Hope this will help you.

  • A simple team task with a single team resource; yet in reality many actual team contributions - can it be done?

What people would like to be able to do is to plan for a task in MSP to be done by a team. We plan how much work is involved and the duration.
Any number of team members can be involved in the task. As things delay and get put on hold we may have entire teams jumping in to complete tasks so utilisation is maximised. PMs do not want to open an plan every half hour to add extra resources to
    plans
Can this be done in MSP in an elegant way?
What I am currently doing is asking PMs to assign all 20 generic team resources to a task; so any of the 20 team members can assign themselves to the task in the TimeSheet. (In fact they get templates with this setup: there is a join project team task with
every generic team resource added so they can swap themselves into the plan)
Obviously the PMs are aghast that Project server will not let you assign a single team resource and then allow anyone in the team to join in. Am I correct in thinking Project Server will not allow this.
(Project server 2010 - on premise)
Trying to stop the swap to Salesforce - but the errors keep a coming

Yeah the capacity planning is mathematically fine if I know the cumulative total of work across a duration - project just flattens it across however many resources are assigned.
To max utilisation resources can and will be shunted onto projects; in a week they can be put onto 20 projects to fill out the utilisation if a big project suffers a major delay. The PMs cannot spend the time rescheduling 10 plans. The resource want
to easily record time sheeted data against the projects they worked on in the past days.
Whilst "add to task" works and they all know how to use it; it only lists the projects they are a Published resource on. Even being reassigned onto a team task will not help. i.e. if I set up tasks on each and every template with the 20 spare generic
team resources on; if a team resource grabs that 1 task to be assigned - the PM must
    1. accept the reassignment;
    2. Open and Publish the plan; only then can that resource add themselves to a task in the plan - PMs can't spend time doing this 20 times per project!
I don't really want every resource seeing every project in the "add to task" list - but it looks like this is what I will have to do as the team tasks seems broken in many, many places.
However we already do it for support projects; everyone (who may contribute at any point to a support item) is assigned to an initial task - this makes the project list unwieldy in Add task or new task and adds clutter for the user

  • Distribution of work over duration

    Dear All,
In my present set up, when i distribute the work over the duration of the activity, the distribution is linear.
Ex- 50 m3 of excavation in 5 days will get distributed as 10 m3 daily for 5 days.
How can I make the distribution variable ( S-curve, or sinusoidal etc)???
    Regards,
    VikasDev

    Hi Vikas,
To use a custom distribution key you need to make configure the following:
Navigate to the following node in SPRO:
Project System > Resources > Distribution
    1. Distribution function - tcode OPB2
The following data is for a S curve distribution. you can use MS excel to distribute % Req values according to the curve equation you want.
    % Dur     % Req
    10            2
    20            5
    30            12
    40            27
    50            50
    60            70
    70            83
    80            92
    90            97
    100            100
    2. Use the distribution strategy that you want to use, normally the standard SAP strategies suffice almost all requirements.
    3. Create a new Requirements Distribution key
Use the Startegy decided in number 2 and function from number 1.
You are ready with your S curve distribution key.
Let me know if this helped.
